Abstract:An algorithm is presented for obtaining placements of cell-based very large scale integrated circuits, subject to timing constraints based on table-lookup model. A new timing delay model based on some delay tables of fabricators is first simplified and deduced; then it is formulated as a constrained programming problem using the new timing delay model. The approach combines the well-known quadratic placement with bottom-up clustering, as well as the slicing partitioning strategy, which has been tested on a set of sample circuits from industry and the results obtained show that it is very promising.

Abstract:As VLSI technology scales down to 45nm process node, reliable printing becomes a persistent huge challenge to IC's manufacturability. The limitation of RETs now forces people to adopt a regular 1-D cell design methodology. A method of extending the line-ends and inserting dummies to optimize the gap distribution, with which the layout based on 1-D cells could get better printability, has been proposed in recent studies. In this paper, we present a fast OPC algorithm for IC layout based on 1-D cells after the previously proposed optimization of gap distribution. With this algorithm, during the OPC process, the extended parts and dummies of the layout are excluded from correction to save run time, and only the functional parts of the layout will be corrected.Experimental results on 45 nm process show excellent efficiency of this algorithm.

Abstract:An effective and efficient mixed-mode placement algorithm call MMP is presented for the high performance combined macro block and standand cell designs. This approach incorporates the well-known quadratic placement with bottom-up clustering, as well as slicing partitioning strategy. This approach can account for macro blocks and standand cells simultaneously, and can find the global optima within a very short time too. We have tested our algorithm on a set of sample circuits from industry and consistently obtained excellent results.

Abstract:This paper presents a hierarchical timing driven initial placement algorithm for row-based ICs. Previous approaches to timing driven placement were not hierarchical, thus suffered from long running timing and non-optimal longest path delay; except the algorithm proposed by Swartz, while which could only handle DAG (directed acyclic graph), i.e., circuits cannot contain memory elements(s). This algorithm is generally applicable to each kind of small-cell circuits. Compared with RITUAL/Tiger system, promising results of longest path delay objective are reported with less execution time.

Abstract:Quadratic/Analytical placement methods have been widely used in the latest IC design process. This kind of placement needs a powerful detailed placement method for large-scale mixed macro and standard cell placement. An efficient and effective multi- stage iterative detailed placement (MSIP) algorithm is proposed in this paper. It combines a better initial placement based on combinatorial optimization method with a deterministic local search for post optimization. Various strategies are used for saving computation time. Experimental results show that it can get an average of 22% wire length improvement comparing to PAFLO [6] in comparable runtime.

Abstract:A novel approach for timing-driven placement of very large integrated circuits is presented. Our strategy is to apply clustering technique to a quadratic placement procedure. By clustering, the number of components for placement is reduced considerably. We design al high-efficiency clustering algorithm, named CARGO, which has global optimality and runs very fast. We use a path based timing-driven quadratic placement algorithm to complete the placement of the condensed circuit. Because quadratic placement algorithm can mathematically find global optima in very short time, our new approach might be more promising for solving the problem thoroughly. We test our algorithm on a set of MCNC circuits and obtain satisfactory results.

Abstract:An algorithm is presented for better legal solution in detailed placement of large scale mixed macros and standard cells IC design.Due to the limitation of computing complexity,an effective and efficient initial placement is very important for detailed placement.Novelty of this algorithm lies in a better solution at initial stage by using network-flow method to satisfy row capacity constraint and the thought of linear placement problem(LPP) to resolve overlaps.Moreover,divide-and-conquer strategy and other simplified methods are adopted to minimize complexity.Experimental results show that the algorithm can get an average of 16% wire length improvement on PAFLO in reasonable CPU time.

Abstract:A new approach of incremental placement approach is described.The obtained timing information drives an efficient net-based placement technique,which dynamically adapts the net weights during successive placement steps.Several methods to combine timing optimization and congestion reducing together are proposed.Cells on critical paths are replaced according to timing and congestion constraints.Experimental results show that our approach can efficiently reduce cycle time and enhance route ability.The max path delay is reduced by 10% on an average after incremental placement on wirelength-optimized circuits.And it achieves the same quality with a high speed up compared to timing driven detailed placement algorithm.

Abstract:For the purpose of reducing the number of the critical paths in timing-driven placement, a powerful new technique to optimize timing via preassigning cell based on linear programming (LP) is represented. The new locations of the cells on the timing critical sub-circuits are optimized by LP and the cells are preassigned to the new locations before the next placement iteration. This method is embedded into the global force directed placement process of Kraftwerk, and the experimental results show that the average worst slack improves 21ps and average total negative slack reduces 483ps while the average wire length only increases 0.83%.

Abstract:With the increasing design requirements of modern circuits, a standard-cell library often contains cells of different row heights to address various trade-offs among performance, power, and area. However, maintaining all standard cells with integer multiples of a single-row height could cause some area overheads and increase power consumption. In this paper, we present an analytical placer to directly consider a circuit design with non-integer multiple-height standard cells and additional layout constraints. The region of different cell heights is adaptively generated by the global placement result. In particular, an exact penalty iterative shrinkage and thresholding (EPIST) algorithm is employed to efficiently optimize the global placement problem. The convergence of the algorithm is proved, and the acceleration strategy is proposed to improve the performance of our algorithm. Compared with the state-of-the-art works, experimental results based on the 2017 CAD Contest at ICCAD benchmarks show that our algorithm achieves the best wirelength and area for every benchmark. In particular, our proposed EPIST algorithm provides a new direction for effectively solving large-scale nonlinear optimization problems with non-smooth terms, which are often seen in real-world applications.

Abstract:Timing and congestion behavior are two important goals in performance-driven standard-cell placement. In this paper, we analyze the relationship between timing and congestion behavior. We introduce a multi-step placement algorithm to optimize the two objects. First, a timing-driven placement step is used to find the global optimal solution. In the second step, the algorithm tries to decrease the maximum congestion while not allowing the timing behavior to deteriorate. We implemented our algorithm and tested it with some real circuits. The results show that the maximum delay decreases more than 30% and the maximum congestion decreases more than 10%

Abstract:Rapid progress in manufacturing burdens great challenges on VLSI physical design both in speed and performance. This paper presents a fast detailed placement algorithm, FAME, according to these demands. It inherits the optimal positions of cells given by a global placer and allocates exact position to each cell using local optimization. FM Mincut and local enumeration are used for optimizing the total wirelength respectively in y and x directions, and a two way mixed optimize flow are adopted to combine the two methods for a better performance. Furthermore, a better enumeration strategy is introduced to speed up the algorithm. An extension to deal with blockages in placement is also discussed. Experimental results show that FAME runs 4 times faster than RITUAL and achieves 5 percent shorter in total wire length on average.

Abstract:In this paper we propose an improved approach for mixed-size detailed placement. First, we legalize macros with the using of constraint graph. Then, we remove overlaps between macros and standard cells, even the placement region and reduce the wirelength by moving the standard cells, and a dynamic programming method is used to legalize the standard cells. Finally, we further reduce the wirelength after legalization. The main contributions of our work are: (1) we can guarantee to find a legalization solution for the placement; (2) we can further reduce the wirelength of the global placement.

Abstract:Incremental placement or ECO placement is a new field in VLSIlayout to meet the demand of high performance design.It detects illegal cell positions and moves cells locally to find a feasible placement solution.This paper proposes an incremental placement algorithm for standard-cell design mode.It adopts row partitioning to cope with various placement constraints,and then inserts trouble cells one by one.An integer programming(IP)problem is constructed and solved to get the best solution of cell insertion.A dual diagonal searching(DDS)method is proposed to solve this special IP problem.We prove that DDS can always be the best solution and its time complexity is O(n).Experiments on a group of industrial test cases show that our algorithm is efficient and robust.It runs 10 times faster than a simple heuristic method and reduces more than 20 percent placement modification in average.

Abstract:For regular ICs, a novel VLSI placement algorithm is presented. The algorithm is based on strict mathematical analysis, can probably find the global optima. And the algorithm's requirements for system resource are rather low. Experimental results are very promising. For a test circuit with scale large up to 21000 cells, this algorithm is faster than any existing algorithms. Another point is that our algorithm is suitable for timing driven placement.

Abstract:As field-programmable gate array (FPGA) architectures continue to evolve and become more complex, the heterogeneity and clock constraints imposed by modern FPGAs have posed significant challenges to FPGA placement. This paper proposes a high-performance placement engine for modern large-scale FPGAs with heterogeneity and clock constraints. To improve efficiency and scalability, we develop a clustering method considering both internal/external connectivity and the balance of block types to build the hierarchy. In each hierarchy level, we propose a hybrid penalty and augmented Lagrangian method (HPALM) to convert the FPGA global placement with heterogeneity and clock constraints into a series of unconstrained optimization subproblems, then use the Adam method to solve each subproblem. In particular, we prove that the HPALM is globally convergent for global placement. Besides, a matching-based IP block legalization is developed to legalize the DSPs and RAMs, and a multi-stage packing is presented to cluster LUTs and FFs into HCLBs. Finally, we propose a history-based legalization to legalize CLBs in an FPGA, and a simulated-annealing-based detailed placement is presented to reduce the wirelength while maintaining legality. Compared with the state-of-the-art works, experimental results based on the ISPD 2017 contest benchmarks show that the proposed algorithm can achieve the shortest routed wirelength in a reasonable runtime.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel timing-driven global routing algorithm for standard cell (SC) layout design based on a critical network concept. The essence of this algorithm is different from that of the typical existing methods, such as the nets-based method and the critical-path-based method. The timing optimization strategy presented in this algorithm is more optimal than the typical existing ones, which makes it possible to reduce the delay in an overall survey. This algorithm has been implemented and tested by MCNC benchmark circuits in this paper. We compared the experimental results between our algorithm and the existing ones. The experimental results show that this algorithm is able to control the delay of the circuit efficiently, and causes little negative effect on other optimizing objectives.
