Abstract:A high resolution and high sensitivity spectroscopic technique is developed by utilising a Bruker IFS 120HR Fourier-transform spectrometer to detect the absorption spectra of samples inside a Ti:Sapphire laser cavity. A trigger-sampling system makes it possible to investigate the evolution of intra-cavity laser absorption spectra with the generation time. Owing to me multiplex advantage of FTS, the quantum noise in ICLAS can be significantly reduced in FT-ICLAS, The absorption of atmospheric water vapour in the range of 12450-12700 cm(-1) was recorded at a resolution of 0.05 cm(-1) to examine the performance of our FT-ICLAS apparatus. With 200 scans on the FT-ICLAS within 2 hours, a sensitivity of 10(-9) cm(-1) was obtained. It is also demonstrated that the FT-ICLAS is able to record both positions and intensities in a wide spectral range. This technique was applied to measure the HOD nu(OD) = 5 overtone in the range of 12550-12900 cm(-1) with a resolution of 0.05 cm(-1). The spectrum was analysed with the ground states combination differences method and the spectroscopic parameters were obtained. For 81.1% rotational levels in this band, the difference between calculate and experimental energy was less than 0.01 cm(-1) which indicated that both the recording and analysing of this spectrum were successful.

Abstract:Based on Fourier-transform intra-cavity laser absorption spectroscopy (FF-ICLAS) setup reported, a signal differential module is introduced to reduce the noise rising from the fluctuation of the laser power and to improve the quality of the interferogram obtained in the experiment. The capability to do quantitative measurement was demonstrated by recording the atmospheric oxygen absorption near 760 nm. The v = 6 local mode stretching overtone spectra of phosphine were recorded with different sample pressure. The pressure caused self-broadening and line shift parameters of this band were achieved.

Abstract:High-quality broadband infrared high-resolution spectra were obtained by use of the intracavity laser absorption spectroscopy technique with a Ti:sapphire laser in combination with a continuous-scan Fourier-transform (FT) interferometer. With electronic filtering used to smooth out the fluctuations of the laser power, the absorption of atmospheric water vapor in the range of 12,450-12,700 cm(-1) was recorded at a resolution of 0.05 cm(-1). A signal-to-noise ratio of greater than 300 was observed in this spectrum, corresponding to a minimum detectable absorption of approximately 2 x 10(-9) cm(-1). Comparison with previous measurements by use of a conventional FT technique shows that this method gives absorption spectra with highly accurate line positions along with reasonable line intensities. Investigation of the evolution of intracavity laser absorption spectra with the generation time is also shown to be possible with a continuous-scan FT spectrometer by use of the interleave rapid-scan method. Abstract:High spectral resolution lidars (HSRLs) have shown great advantages for the measurement of backscatter and extinction coefficients of aerosols and clouds due to its spectral discrimination process, which brings about more straightforward and accurate retrieval without additional assumptions in contrast to standard backscatter lidars. We have developed a tilted, field-widened Michelson interferometer (FWMI) to obtain this spectral discrimination. The interferometer is composed of a cubic beam splitter, a solid arm and an air-solid blending arm, and will be employed as the spectroscopic filter of an HSRL to block the aerosol signals but transmit the molecular backscattered photons optimally. In this paper, a comprehensive radiometric model is developed to evaluate the spectral discrimination performance of the FWMI, especially under varies of practical imperfections, such as fabrication errors and utility defections. The principle of the modeling for tilted FWMI as the spectroscopic filter of the HSRL has been presented, through which, the effects on transmittance characteristics of the FWMI from these practical imperfections are analyzed in detail. The model can be used to evaluate the machinery tolerance budgets for new FWMI designs and decide optimal state of usage for FWMI appliance.

Abstract:The newly developed high resolution Fourier-transform intra-cavity laser absorption spectroscopy (FT-ICLAS) was utilized to record the νOD=5 stretching overtone of HOD at a resolution of 0.05 cm-1 in the region 12550–12900 cm-1. The spectrum was rotationally analysed and the spectroscopic parameters were derived from nonlinear least-squares fitting. Good agreement of the observed with the calculated energy levels was achieved.

It has been used to measure and analyze the high-resolution vibration-rotation spectrum of HDO (500) band, yielding a set of vibration-rotation parameters.

Abstract:Advances in on-chip spectroscopy are resulting in improved chemical and biological sensing applications. Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) technology, a leading spectroscopy system, exhibits an enhanced signal-to-noise ratio over other spectroscopy designs by utilizing Fellgett’s advantage. To achieve this, FTIR spectrometers have a variable arm path length and use modulation of the index of refraction to enable spectral decomposition of light from the interferogram. However, this approach often requires discrete optical elements resulting in a costly and bulky design. In addition, it results in increased system complexity from mechanical moving parts and reduced system robustness. Many on-chip spectrometers use spectrum splitting, a much less effective spectrometry system, due to size and power constraints. These designs have a reduced signal-to-noise ratio because they lack the Fellgett advantage present in FTIR spectrometers.

Abstract:Laser intracavity photoacoustic spectroscopy (ICPAS), in combination laser intracavity absorption (ICAS) with photoacoustic spectroscopy(PAS) technology is presented. It can effectively enhance the photoacoustic signal intensity by means of increasing the laser power and overlapping in phase when the laser beam passed through the acoustic wave detector every time. Two sets of experimental results were obtained when probing the water vapor with the effective absorption coefficient, k(eff), 1.06 x 10(-6)cm(-1) x ppm(-1) in the air using a tunable distributed feedback laser diode (DFB-LD) and validate the relevance of the reported mathematical model. It can be found that for a quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy(QEPAS) sensor system, the relationship between the second harmonic current amplitude I-2f and the laser power W-L is linear, and the slope of the fitting results is 285.0809 pA/mW compared to that of theoretical calculation 278.7025 pA/mW, with the fitting constant of 17.1318 pA, which was corresponding to the laser power less than 0.0601 mW and for a resonant photoacoustic(PA) cell sensor system, the relationship between the second harmonic voltage amplitude U21 and the laser power WL is also linear, and the slope of the fitting results is 108.8463 mV/mW compared to that of theoretical calculation 111.26 mV/mW, with the fitting constant of 0.4875 mV, which was corresponding to the laser power less than 0.0045 mW. Abstract:Intrinsic spectrum that results from the coupling of spontaneous emission in a laser cavity, can determine the energy concentration and coherence of lasers, which is crucial for the optical high-precision measurement. Up to now, it is hard to analyze the intrinsic spectrum in the high-speed laser dynamics process, especially under the condition of fast wavelength sweeping. In this work, a new method to analyze the laser intrinsic spectrum is proposed with the laser energy decomposition to a series of chirp-frequency signals, which is realized by fractional Fourier transform (FRFT) of the coherently reconstructed laser waveform. The new understanding of the energy distribution of lasers contributes to the accurate characterization of laser dynamical parameters in time-frequency domain. In the proof-of-concept experiment, the time-frequency dynamical process of a commercial wavelength swept laser is tested with different wavelength-scanning speeds, and the most suitable measurement time window width required for the FRFT-based narrowest spectrum is also explored. The proposed analysis method of laser dynamical parameters will promote the understanding of laser dynamics, and benefit for the optical precision measurement applications.

Abstract:Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometers have been the dominant technology in the field of mid-infrared (MIR)spectroscopy for decades. Supercontinuum laser sources operating in the MIR spectral region now offer the potential to enrich the field of FTIR spectroscopy due to their distinctive properties, such as high-brightness, broadband spectral coverage and enhanced stability. In our contribution, we introduce this advanced light source as a replacement for conventional thermal emitters. Furthermore, an approach to efficient coupling of pulsed MIR supercontinuum sources to FTIR spectrometers is proposed and considered in detail. The experimental part is devoted to pulse-to-pulse energy fluctuations of the applied supercontinuum laser, performance of the system, as well as the noise and long-term stability. Comparative measurements performed with a conventional FTIR instrument equipped with a thermal emitter illustrate that similar noise levels can be achieved with the supercontinuum-based system. The analytical performance of the supercontinuum-based FTIR spectrometer was tested for a concentration series of aqueous formaldehyde solutions in a liquid flow cell (500 $\mu$m path length) and compared with the conventional FTIR (130 $\mu$m path length). The results show a four-times-enhanced detection limit due to the extended path length enabled by the high brightness of the laser. In conclusion, FTIR spectrometers equipped with novel broadband MIR supercontinuum lasers could outperform traditional systems providing superior performance, e.g., interaction path lengths formerly unattainable, while maintaining low noise levels known from highly stable thermal emitters.

Abstract:Infrared (IR) spectroscopic imaging systems are a powerful tool for visualizing molecular microstructure of a sample without the need for dyes or stains. Table-top Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) imaging spectrometers, the current established technology, can record broadband spectral data efficiently but requires scanning the entire spectrum with a low throughput source. The advent of high-intensity, broadly tunable quantum cascade lasers (QCL) has now accelerated IR imaging but results in a fundamentally different type of instrument and approach, namely, discrete frequency IR (DF-IR) spectral imaging. While the higher intensity of the source provides a higher signal per channel, the absence of spectral multiplexing also provides new opportunities and challenges. Here, we couple a rapidly tunable QCL with a high performance microscope equipped with a cooled focal plane array (FPA) detector. Our optical system is conceptualized to provide optimal performance based on recent theory and design rules for high-definition (HD) IR imaging. Multiple QCL units are multiplexed together to provide spectral coverage across the fingerprint region (776.9 to 1904.4 cm(-1)) in our DF-IR microscope capable of broad spectral coverage, wide-field detection, and diffraction-limited spectral imaging. We demonstrate that the spectral and spatial fidelity of this system is at least as good as the best FT-IR imaging systems. Our configuration provides a speedup for equivalent spectral signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) compared to the best spectral quality from a high-performance linear array system that has 10-fold larger pixels. Compared to the fastest available HD FT-IR imaging system, we demonstrate scanning of large tissue microarrays (TMA) in 3-orders of magnitude smaller time per essential spectral frequency. These advances offer new opportunities for high throughput IR chemical imaging, especially for the measurement of cells and tissues.
Fourier transform spectrometry with a near-infrared supercontinuum source

Abstract:Optical fiber based supercontinuum light sources combine the brightness of lasers with the broad bandwidth of incandescent lamps and thus are promising candidates for sources in spectroscopic applications requiring high brightness and broad bandwidth. Herein, near-infrared (IR) Fourier transform (FT) spectrometry with a supercontinuum (SC) light source is investigated. The efficient, collimated propagation of broad bandwidth SC light through an 18 m path length multipass cell is demonstrated. A normalized spectral difference is calculated for the SC spectrum on consecutive FT mirror scans and is found to vary by less than 0.5%, indicating excellent spectral stability. The rms noise on zero absorbance lines is obtained as a function of the number of mirror scans at 0.125, 2, and 16 cm(-1) resolution for both the SC and conventional tungsten lamp source. The SC source has approximately a factor of ten times more noise than the lamp under comparable conditions for each resolution and data acquisition time. This clearly indicates that spectral acquisition with the SC source is not detector noise limited. NIR-FT spectra of methane and methyl salicylate, acquired with both the SC and lamp source, are reported. These spectra illustrate the advantage the SC source has over the incandescent source in that it can efficiently traverse long path lengths, thus providing a sensitivity advantage. The spectra also demonstrate the disadvantage of the SC source with respect to the lamp in the increased level of amplitude noise. Prospects for the future use of SC sources in absorption spectroscopy, including possible noise mitigation strategies, are briefly discussed.

Abstract:Infrared imaging spectrometry is utilized to detect and identify targets by collecting spectral images. In some cases, the infrared spectral images of dynamic targets need to be detected accurately, such as during remote sensing target tracking and engine tail flame detection applications. However, it is difficult to obtain reliable measurement results when using a traditional infrared imaging spectrometer with a scanning structure because of motion artifacts. This work proposes a snapshot infrared imaging Fourier transform spectrometer (SIIFTS) based on stepped micromirrors and a lens array. Two micromirrors sample the spectral information, and the lens array can realize multi-aperture snapshot imaging. The spectrometer is capable of collecting three-dimensional (3D) datasets during a single measurement period, and its absence of motion artifacts and its ability to work without moving parts is very important for dynamic target detection. The achromatic optical design of the SIIFTS is completed, and two front imaging systems for remote sensing and tail flame detection applications are designed for selection. A SIIFTS prototype was built, and flame detection tests were conducted in a laboratory environment. The experimental results show that the SIIFTS developed here can accurately and stably obtain real-time image and spectral information from dynamic targets.

Abstract:The comparison between "large aperture static imaging spectrometry (LASIS)" designed by author and "method for simultaneously measuring the spectral intensity as a function of wavelength of all the pixels of a two dimensional scene" (MSMSI) designed by Israeli researchers is given. The difference of the interferometers and imaging systems in LASIS and MSMSI is discussed. The nonlinear curve of optical path difference of MSMSI is simulated. Inspired by the operation of MSMSI, the time modulated Fourier transform imaging spectrometry based on lateral shearing interferometer was presented. The optical path differences of different field of view were given under the condition of regularly rotating the lateral shearing interferometer.

Abstract:A single-frame complete spatiotemporal characteristics measurement method of ultrafast laser pulses, named Carrier Frequency Division Multiplexing Spectral Interferometry (CFDMSI), is proposed and demonstrated. Based on the idea of frequency division multiplexing, the 3D spatiotemporal field E(x,y,t) of a femtosecond laser pulse can be reconstructed from a single spectral interferogram. The implementation of CFDMSI is quite simple, just fixing a slit array at the entrance of an imaging spectrometer, then injecting the unknown pulse and the reference pulse into the imaging spectrometer at a certain cross angle. By recording and analyzing a single spectral interferogram, the unknown pulse‘s spatiotemporal field in the sampling area of the slit array can be obtained. The principle and implementation of CFDMSI are introduced, and its effectiveness is verified by a demonstration experiment.

Abstract:A Fourier transform imaging spectrometer (FTIS) of medium and long wave infrared bispectrum spatiotemporal joint modulation based on static interference system is presented, and the front telephoto system and post-imaging system arc designed. According to the theory of aberration, the initial structure of the reflective front telephoto system is calculated by adding the constraint. The large-scale astigmatism and coma aberration caused by the tilt beam splitter and compensation plate in the system arc corrected through the optimization of the optical design software. The modulation transfer function (MTF) of the front telephoto system is close to the diffraction limit in the range of the medium wave and long wave bispectrums. The transmission structure is adopted in the two post-imaging systems of the spectrometer. The results of spot diagram show that the root mean square (RMS) values of the imaging spots of the post-imaging systems arc less than 7.0 mu m in the bispectrum range.
