Abstract:Starting from the halfsandwich compound Cp★Re(O)Cl2, the chalcogen-bridged binuclear complexes Cp★2Re2(μ-E4)2 (E  S, Se), Cp★2Re2O2(μ-E)(μ-E2)(E  S, Se) and Cp★2Re2O2(μ-E)2 (E  Se, Te) have been prepared by reaction with oligochalcogenides and subsequent chalcogen abstraction using tertiary phosphanes, PR3. The molecular structures in the crystalline state of three selenium compounds have been determined by X-ray structure analyses; in contrast to the oxo complexes, the oxygen-free compounds Cp★2Re2(μ-E4) are distinguished by a strong intramolecular ReRe interaction (d(ReRe) 2.692 (1)Å in Cp★2Re2(μ-Se4)2, d(Re … Re) 4.32 Å and 3.77 Å in Cp★2Re2O2(μ-Se) (μ-Se2) and Cp★ 2Re2O2(μ-Se)2, respectively). The reactions of Cp★Re(O)Cl2 with either Na2S4 or (NEt4)2Se6 lead initially to the mononuclear cyclo-tetrachalcogenide compounds Cp★Re(O)(E4) (E  S, Se), which can then be converted into the binuclear complexes. However, Cp★2Re2O2(μ-Te)2 was directly formed in the reaction between Cp★Re(O)Cl2 and (NnBu4)2Te5.

Abstract:The reactions of Cp*ReCl4 with polychalcogenide salts such as Na2S4 or (NEt4)2Se6 lead initially to the violet trichalcogenido chelate complexes Cp*ReCl2(E3) (E = S (3a), Se (3b)) which, due to their functional chloro ligands, can be used as intermediates for further reactions. Upon hydrolysis in moist solvents or aminolysis with tert.butylamine, 3 a, b are converted into the tetrachalcogenido chelate complexes Cp*Re(O)(E4) (E = S (4a), Se (4b)) and Cp*Re(N(t)Bu)(E4) (E = S (5 a), Se (5b)), respectively. X-Ray structure analyses were carried out for the three mononuclear cyclo-oligoselenido compounds 3b-5b. It appears that the size of the Se(n)2- chelate ring (n = 3 or 4) essentially depends on steric factors within the coordination sphere of rhenium.
Sulfurization and Selenization of the Halfsandwich Nitrosylmetal Complexes Cp*M(CO)2NO (M = Cr, Mo) and Cp*M(NO)I2 (M = Mo, W)

Abstract:The photo-induced decarbonylation of Cp*Cr(CO)2NO in acetonitrile solution in the presence of excess sulfur leads to the cyclo-pentasulfido complex Cp*Cr(NO)(S5) (1 a), while in the case of limited sulfur supply the binuclear bis(µ-disulfido) complex Cp*2Cr2(NO)2(µ-S2)2 (4a) is formed preferentially. The corresponding reaction with elemental selenium produces Cp*2Cr2(NO)2(µ-Se2)2 (4b), irrespective of the available amount of selenium. Photodecarbonylation of Cp*Mo(CO)2NO gives only the binuclear derivates Cp*2Mo2(NO)2(µ-E2) (E = S (5a), Se (5b)) which are also obtained by treating Cp*Mo(NO)I2 with H2S or H2Se, respectively. Nitrosyl loss predominates if the tungsten complex Cp*W(NO)I2 is reacted with H2S; in an argon atmosphere the products are Cp*W(S)(S2)(I) (7a) and Cp*2W2(S)2(µ-S)2 (8a), while in air some Cp*W(NO)(S5) (3a) and the oxo compounds Cp*W(O)(S2)I (7c), Cp*2W2(O)2(µ-S)2 (8c) and Cp*2W2(S)(O)(µ-S)2 (8d) are formed. The analogous reaction with H2Se leads to Cp*W(NO)(Se5) (3b), Cp*2W2(O)2(µ-Se)2 (9c) and Cp*2W2(Se)(O)(µ-Se)2 (9d), respectively. The binuclear tungsten complexes 8a,c,d and 9c,d contain a central W(µ-E)2W framework (E = S or Se) which is unaffected by air, while terminal sulfido and selenido ligands are quantitatively converted into the corresponding terminal oxo ligands in the presence of air in CH2C12 or THF solution. With the preparation of Cp*2W2(O)2(µ-E)2 (E = S (8c) and Se (9c)), the series of dioxo complexes containing a pair of monochalcogen bridges (E = O, S, Se, Te) has become complete. The new complexes have been characterized by their IR (v(NO)), 1H and 13C NMR (Cp*) spectra as well as by electron-impact mass spectrometry. According to the X-ray structure analyses, the binuclear compounds Cp*2Cr2(NO)2(µ-S2)2 (4a) and Cp*2Mo2(NO)2(µ-Se2)2 (5b) contain two 14-electron [Cp*M(NO)2] fragments which are connected by a pair of dichalcogen (η1,η2-E2) bridging ligands (M = Cr or Mo, E = S or Se). The central M2E2 four-membered ring is not planar, and the binuclear molecules are chiral.

Abstract:The reactions of the pentamethylcycopentadienyl halfsandwich nitrosyl complexes Cp*Cr(NO)2I and Cp*M(NO)I2 (M = Mo, W) with either methanolic ammonium polysulfide solutions or hydrogen selenide solutions (generated by hydrolysis of Al2Se3) can be used to prepare cyclo-pentachalcogenido compounds such as Cp*M(NO)(S5) (M = Cr (1a), Mo (2a), W (3a)) and Cp*M(NO)(Se5) (M = Cr (1b), W (3b)). The chromium complex Cp*Cr(NO)(S5) (1a) is also formed in high yield by photodecarbonylation of Cp*Cr(CO)2NO in acetonitrile solution in the presence of excess sulfur. An X-ray structure analysis of Cp*W(NO)(S5) (3a) revealed a cyclo-S5 chelate ligand in the chair conformation and an almost linear nitrosyl group.

Abstract:The reactions of half-sandwich diselenolate Mo and W complexes Cp#M(NO)(SePh)2 (M = Mo; Cp# = Cp′ (1a), MeCp (1b); M = W; Cp# = Cp′ (1c)) with (Norb)Mo(CO)4, Ni(COD)2 and Fe(CO)5 have been investigated. Treatment of (1a), (1b) and (1c) with (Norb)Mo(CO)4 in PhMe gave the bimetallic complexes: Cp′Mo(NO)(μ-SePh)2Mo(CO)4(2a), MeCpMo(NO)(μ-SePh)2Mo(CO)4(2b) and Cp′W(NO)(μ-SePh)2Mo(CO)4(2c) in moderate yields. Irradiation of (1a) and (1c) in the presence of Fe(CO)5 gave heterobimetallic complexes Cp′Mo(CO)(μ-SePh)2Fe(CO)3(3a) and Cp′W(NO)(μ-SePh)2Fe(CO)3(3c). Ni(COD)2 reacts with two equivalents of (1a), (1b) and (1c) to give [Cp′Mo(NO)(μ-SePh)2]2Ni (4a), [MeCpMo(NO)(μ-SePh)2]2Ni (4b) and [Cp′W(NO)(μ-SePh)2]2Ni (4c) in good yields. The new heterobimetallic complexes were characterized by i.r., 1H-n.m.r., 13C-n.m.r. and EI-MS spectroscopy.
Synthesis and reactions of group 6 metal half-sandwich complexes of 2,2-dicyanoethylene-1,1-dichalcogenolates [(Cp*)M[E(2)C=C(CN)(2)](2)]-(M = Mo, W; E = S, Se)

Abstract:A series of group 6 transition metal half-sandwich complexes with 1,1-dichalcogenide ligands have been prepared by the reactions of Cp*MCl(4)(Cp* = eta(5)-C(5)Me(5); M = Mo, W) with the potassium salt of 2,2-dicyanoethylene-1,1-dithiolate, (KS)(2)C=C(CN)(2) (K(2)-i-mnt), or the analogous seleno compound, (KSe)(2)C=C(CN)(2) (K(2)-i-mns). The reaction of Cp*MCl(4) with (KS)(2)C=C(CN)(2) in a 1:3 molar ratio in CH(3)CN gave rise to K[Cp*M(S(2)C=C(CN)(2))(2)] (M = Mo, 1a, 74%; M = W, 2a, 46%). Under the same conditions, the reaction of Cp*MoCl(4) with 3 equiv of (KSe)(2)C=C(CN)(2) afforded K[Cp*Mo(Se(2)C=C(CN)(2))(2)] (3a) and K[Cp*Mo(Se(2)C=C(CN)(2))(Se(Se(2))C=C(CN)(2))] (4) in respective yields of 45% and 25%. Cation exchange reactions of 1a, 2a, and 3a with Et(4)NBr resulted in isolation of (Et(4)N)[Cp*Mo(S(2)C=C(CN)(2))(2)] (1b), (Et(4)N)[Cp*W(S(2)C=C(CN)(2))(2)] (2b), and (Et(4)N)[Cp*Mo(Se(2)C=C(CN)(2))(2)] (3b), respectively. Complex 4 crystallized with one THF and one CH(3)CN molecule as a three-dimensional network structure. Inspection of the reaction of Cp*WCl(4) with (KSe)(2)C=C(CN)(2) by ESI-MS revealed the existence of three species in CH(3)CN, [Cp*W(Se(2)C=C(CN)(2))(2)]-, [Cp*W(Se(2)C=C(CN)(2))(Se(Se(2))C=C(CN)(2))]-, and [Cp*W(Se(Se(2))C=C(CN)(2))(2)]-, of which [Cp*W(Se(2)C=C(CN)(2))(Se(Se(2))C=C(CN)(2))]-(5) was isolated as the main product. Treatment of 2a with 1/4 equiv of S(8) in refluxing THF resulted in sulfur insertion and gave rise to K[Cp*W(S(2)C=C(CN)(2))(S(S(2))C=C(CN)(2))](6), which crystallized with two THF molecules forming a three-dimensional network structure. 6 can also be prepared by refluxing 2a with 1/4 equiv of S(8) in THF. 3a readily added one Se atom upon treatment with 1 mol of Se powder in THF to give 4 in high yield, while the treatment of 3a or 4 with 2 equiv of Na(2)Se in THF led to formation of a dinuclear complex [(Cp*Mo)(2)(mu-Se)(mu-Se(Se(3))C=C(CN)(2))] (7). The structure of 7 consists of two Cp*Mo units bridged by a Se(2-) and a [Se(Se(3))C=C(CN)(2)](2-) ligand in which the triselenido group is arranged in a nearly linear way (163 degrees). The reaction of 2a with 2 equiv of CuBr in CH(3)CN yielded a trinuclear complex [Cp*WCu(2)(mu-Br)(mu(3)-S(2)C=C(CN)(2))(2)] (8), which crystallized with one CH(3)CN and generated a one-dimensional chain polymer through bonding of Cu to the N of the cyano groups.

Abstract:The reactions of hydrido-tri(3,5-dimethyl-1-pyrazolyl)borate nitrosylmolybdenum diiodide, Tp*Mo(NO)I-2 (2), with the oligochalcogenides (NH4)(2)S-10 and (NEt(4))(2)Se-6 in THF solution lead to mononuclear cyclo-pentachalcogenido complexes, Tp*Mo(NO)(E(5)) (E = S (3a), Sc (3b)), In the presence of either H2S or H2Se (generated by slow ''in situ'' hydrolysis of Al(2)E(3) in moist THF solution) 2 is converted into binuclear chalcogenido-bridged products, Tp(2)*Mo-2(NO)(2)(mu-E)(2) (E = S (4a), Se (4b)) which are more conveniently obtained from 3a,b by dechalcogenation with tri((n)butyl)phosphane (1:4,5). The new chalcogen complexes 3a,b and 4a,b were characterized by IR, NMR and mass spectroscopy and compared with the related chalcogen compounds derived from pentamethylcyclopentadienyl nitrosylmolybdenum diiodide, Cp*Mo(NO)I-2. The molecular structure of Tp*Mo(NO)(Se-5) (3b) has been determined; the complex contains a six-membered MoSe5 metallacycle in the chair conformation and a linearly coordinated nitrosyl ligand (angle Mo-N-O 178.9(17)degrees).

Abstract:The reactions of the pentamethylcyclopentadienyl-osmium compound Cp∗Os(NO)Br2 (1) with Na2S4 and (NEt4)2Se6 in dimethyl- formamide solution lead to mononuclear tetrachalcogenido complexes Cp∗ Os(NO) (E4) (E = S (2a), Se (2b)), whereas binuclear products Cp2∗Os2(NO)2(μ-E)2 (E = S (3a), Se (3b), Te (3c)) are obtained from the reactions of 1 with Li2E in tetrahydrofuran solution. Dechalcogenation of 2a,b using tri(n-butyl)phosphane gives 3a,b. The molecular geometry of Cp ∗ Os(NO)(Se4) (2b) has been determined by an X-ray crystal structure analysis which confirms the presence of a non-planar cyclotetraselenido chelate ligand.

Abstract:The 16-electron half-sandwich cobalt complex Cp"Co[Se2C2(B10H10)] (Cp" = eta(5)-1,3-Bu2C5H3) (3) has been synthesized by the reaction of [(THF)(3)LiSe,C2B10H10Li(THF)](2) (2) with Cp"Co(CO)I-2 (1). The hetero-binuclear complex Cp"CoW(CO)(2) [Se2C2(B10H10)](2) (4) was obtained from the reaction of 3 with W(CO)(3)(py)(3) in the presence of BF3 (.) Et2O. Abstract:The reactions of the rhenium(V) dihalides TpRe(O)Cl2, Cp∗ Re(O)Cl2 and Cp∗ Re(NtBu)Cl2 with the dilithium derivative of 1,1′-ferrocene dithiol and diselenol, respectively, have been used to prepare heterodimetallic complexes which contain both rhenium (in the center of a half-sandwich complex) and iron (in the sandwich cage). The six new complexes were characterized by IR, 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy and by EI mass spectrometry. The molecular structure of TpRe(O)[S2fc] (1a) was determined by X-ray crystallography which revealed a long non-bonding distance (438.9 pm) between the two metals.

Abstract:Photolysis or thermolysis of Cp*Ir(CO)(2) (1) in the presence of excess sulfur (S-8) gives Cp*Ir(CO)(S-4) (2a) which is further S decarbonylated to [Cp*Ir(mu-S-4)](2) (4a). The analogous reaction of 1 with excess selenium leads to Cp(2)*Ir,(mu-Se)(mu-Se-4) (6b). In the case of limited chalcogen supply, the products are [Cp*Ir(CO)(mu-E](2) [E = S (3a), Se 3 b)] and [Cp*Ir(mu-E)](4) [E = S (5a), Se (5b)]. A stepwise formation of the pseudocubane clusters 5a,b from dinuclear precursors is assumed. The solid-state structure of 2a has been determined by X-ray crystallography.

Abstract:Two prototypes of hetero-trinuclear complexes containing metal−metal bondings {Cp‘Rh[μ-E2C2(B10H10)]}2Mo(μ-CO)2 (Cp‘ = η5-1,3-tBu2C5H3, E = S(2a), Se(2b)), {Cp‘Rh[μ-E2C2(B10H10)]}2Ni (E = S (4a), Se (4b)) were obtained from the reactions of 16-electron complexes Cp‘Rh[E2C2(B10H10)] (E = S (1a), Se (1b)) with low-valence transition metal complexes, such as [Mo(CO)3(NC5H5)3] and Ni(COD)2, respectively. The molecular structures of Cp‘Rh[Se2C2(B10H10)] (1b), (Cp‘Rh)2[S2C2(B10H10)] (3a), {Cp‘Rh[μ-E2C2(B10H10)]}2Mo(μ-CO)2] (E = S (2a), Se (2b)), and {Cp‘Rh[μ-E2C2(B10H10)]}2Ni (E = S (4a), Se (4b)) have been determined by X-ray crystallography. All these complexes were characterized by elemental analysis and IR and NMR spectra.

Abstract:Treatment of o-carborane, n-butyllithium, selenium, and [(p-cymene)RuCl2](2) under argon leads to the complexes (p-cymene)Ru(Se2C2B10H10) (1), [(p-cymene)RuCl(Se-SeC2B10H11)][(p-cymene)Ru(Se2C2B10H10)] (2), [(p-cymene)Ru-2(Se2C2B10H10)(2)][(p-cymene)Ru(Se2C2B10H9)] (3), and [(p-cymene)Ru(Se2C2B10H9) Ru(Se2C2B10H10)](2) (4). 2 contains a rhombic Ru2Se2 core and can be considered as an adduct of the two 16e half-sandwich monomers (p-cymene)Ru(Se2C2B10H10) (1) and (p-cymene)RuCl(Se-SeC2B10H11). In 3 three o-carborane-1,2-diselenolate ligands bridge the adjacent Ru atoms and one [Se2C2B10H9](3-) unit is in a tridentate binding mode with a Ru-B bond. In 4, two identical dinuclear (p-cymene)Ru-2(Se2C2B10H9)(Se2C2B10H10) subunits connect to each other through two Se atoms of two individual [Se2C2B10H10](2-) ligands and a metal-induced B-H activation occurs as well. However, if the above reaction mixture is exposed to air, the unexpected product [(p-cymene)Ru](2)(Se2C2B9H10)Ru-2(Se2C2B10H10)(3)(mu-O) (5) can be isolated in moderate yield. It contains a novel Ru4Se8O core generated from three [Se2C2B10H10](2-), one nido-[Se2C2B9H10](3-), and one mu-oxo unit. Complexes 2-5 have been characterized by elemental analyses, mass and NMR spectra, and X-ray crystallography.

Abstract:The prototype hetero-binuclear complexes containing metal-metal bonds, {CpRh[E2C2(B10H10)]}[Fe(CO)3] (Cp = Cp* = eta 5-Me5C5, E = S(5a), Se(5b); Cp = Cp = eta 5-1,3-tBu2C5H3, E = S(6a), Se(6b)) and {CpCo[E2C2(B10H10)]}[Fe(CO)3] (Cp = Cp* = eta 5-Me5C5, E = S(7a), Se(7b); Cp = Cp = eta 5-C5H5, E = S(8a), Se(8b)) were obtained from the reactions of 16-electron complexes CpRh[E2C2(B10H10)] (Cp = Cp*, E = S(1a), Se(1b); Cp = Cp, E = S(2a), Se(2b)), CpCo[E2C2(B10H10)] (Cp = Cp*, E = S(3a), Se(3b); Cp = Cp, E = S(4a), Se(4b)) with Fe(CO)5 in the presence of Me3NO. The molecular structures of {Cp*Rh[E2C2(B10H10)]}[Fe(CO)3] (E = S(5a), Se(5b)), {CpRh[S2C2(B10H10)]}[Fe(CO)3] (6a) {Cp*Co[S2C2(B10H10)]}[Fe(CO)3] (7a) and {CpCo[S2C2(B10H10)]}[Fe(CO)3] (8a) have been determined by X-ray crystallography. All these complexes were characterized by elemental analysis and IR and NMR spectra.

Abstract:A new type of multidentate ligand with both acetylacetonate and bis(2-pyridyl) units on the 1,3-dithiole moiety, 3-[2-(dipyridin-2-yl-methylene)-5-methylsulfanyl-[1,3]dithiol-4-ylsulfanyl]-pentane-2, 4-dione (L), has been prepared. Through reactions of the ligand with Re(CO)5X (X=Cl, Br), new rhenium(I) tricarbonyl complexes ClRe(CO)3(L) (2) and BrRe(CO)3(L) (3), have been obtained. With the use of 2 or 3 as the precursors, the further reactions with (TpPh2)Co(OAc)(HpzPh2) (TpPh2=hydrotris(3,5-diphenylpyrazol-1-yl)borate); HpzPh2=3,5-diphenyl-pyrazole) or M(OAc)2 (M=Mn, Zn), afford four new heteronuclear complexes: ClRe(CO)3(L)Co(TpPh2) (4), BrRe(CO)3(L)Co(TpPh2) (5), [ClRe(CO)3(L)]2Mn(CH3OH)2 (6) and [ClRe(CO)3(L)]2Zn(CH3OH)2 (7), respectively. Crystal structures of complexes 2 and 4–7 have been determined by X-ray diffraction. Their absorption spectra, photoluminescence and magnetic properties have been studied.

Abstract:The reactions of the organometallic ligand complex [Cp2 Mo2 (CO)4 (μ,η2 -Sb2 )] (C) with Ag[TEF] ([TEF]- =[Al{OC(CF3 )3 }4 ]- ) in the presence of a number of di- or polytopic N-donor molecules (1,6,7,12-tetraazaperylene (L1), 2,2'-bipyrimidine (L2), 4,4'-bipyridine (L3), trans-1,2-di(4-pyridyl)ethylene (L4) and 1,3-di(4-pyridyl)propane (L5)), were studied. Depending on the reaction stoichiometry and choice of linker, these reactions lead to the selective formation of dimeric or tetrameric supramolecular coordination complexes as well as 1D and 2D coordination polymers (CPs). The presented compounds are unique examples of supramolecular complexes incorporating both organometallic Sb-donor and organic N-donor molecules as ligands to stabilize metal ions. Moreover, one of the formed compounds, the CP [Ag4 (η2 : 1 -C)4 (L4)4 ]n [TEF]4n , represents an exceptional 1D polymer incorporating both N- and Sb-donor ligands as connectors for metal ions.

Abstract:The reactions of the 16-electron half-sandwich complex CpCo(S2C2B10H10) (1) (Cp: cyclopentadienyl) with sulfonyl azides (p-toluenesulfonyl azide, TsN3; methanesulfonyl azide, MsN3) in refluxing dichloromethane or at ambient temperature lead to imido-bridged adducts CpCo(S2C2B10H10) (NSO2R) (2a, R = 4-MePh; 2h, R = Me) which can convert to the tetraazadiene cobalt complexes CpCoN4(SO2R)(2) (3a, R = 4-MePh; 3b, R = Me) in the presence of excess azide if heated. The reactions of 1 with acyl azides (methyl azidoformate and benzoyl azide) lead to CpCo(S2C2B10H10)(CONR) (4a, R = OMe; 4b, R = Ph) with a newly-generated five-membered metallacyclic ring Co-S-N-C-O. Complexes 2a and 2b show further reactivity toward alkynes to give rise to the insertion products CpCo(S2C2B10H10)(R1C=CR2) (NSO2R) (R-1 = COOMe, R-2 = H, R = 4-MePh, 5a, R = Me, 5b; R-1 = R-2 = COOMe, R = 4-MePh, 6a, R = Me, 6h; R-1 = COOMe, R-2 = Ph, R = 4-MePh, 8a, R = Me, 8b) formed by alkyne addition to a Co-S bond to generate a Co-C-C-S four-membered ring and CpCo(S2C2B10H10) (R1C=CR2NSO2R) (R-1 = H, R-2 = Ph, R = 4-MePh, 7a, R = Me, 7b; R-1 = COOMe, R-2 = Ph, R = 4-MePh, 9a, R = Me, 9b) formed by alkyne insertion into a Co-N bond to generate a Co-C-C-N-S five-membered ring. In the case of PhC CCO2Me, the products with insertion into both Co-S and Co-N bonds are isolated. Interestingly, if tert-butylacetylene is used, CpCo(S2C2B10H10)(R1R2C=CNSO2R) (R-1 = tBu, R-2 = H, R = 4-MePh, 10a, R = Me, 10b) are generated by insertion of terminal carbon into a Co-N bond to form four-membered ring Co-C-N-S. The insertion pathways of these reactions have been discussed on the basis of DFT calculations. All the new complexes were fully characterized, and X-ray structural analyses were performed for 2a, 3a, 313, 4a, 4b, 5a, 6a, 7a, 7b, 8a, 9a, 9b, and 10b.
