Abstract:Bayesian predictive inference plays an important role in radar constant false alarm rate (CFAR) detection, which produces an adaptive target detection model to achieve CFAR detection. However, in the context of heterogeneous Weibull clutter environments, the interference effect may lead to an imprecise prediction of the background clutter level, resulting in a severely degraded detection performance. To enhance the detection performance in heterogeneous environments, a Bayesian CFAR detector based on interference control is proposed. The Weibull background with known shape parameters is analyzed, based on which the Bayesian interference control detection model is established. Furthermore, in the proposed detector, the interferences in the clutter range profile can be predicted and compensated, which improves the detection performance and anti-interference ability of the detector in heterogeneous environments. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed detector.
Dual-Threshold CFAR Detection for Distributed Targets

Abstract:For the distributed target in spherically invariant random vector clutter, a dual-threshold GLRT detector with constant false alarm rate (CFAR) property is derived. The distributed target, which is modeled as a subspace random signal, may be distributed both in range and in Doppler frequency axes. The cell whose signal-to-clutter ratio is higher is selected by the first threshold. Then the accumulation of energy is implemented in these selected cells, and it makes a final decision according to the second threshold. Assuming that the normalized clutter covariance matrix is known, the dual-threshold GLRT is devised. The probability of false alarm of dual-threshold GLRT is derived and it ensures CFAR property. And then according to a secondary data set to estimate the clutter normalized clutter covariance matrix, the adaptive detector is obtained. The performance assessment conducted by Monte Carlo simulation confirms the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed detector.

Abstract:Constant false alarm rate (CFAR) detection in heterogeneous Weibull background has always been an important issue in the field of radar target detection. However, interference effects and non-Gaussian characteristics of the background usually lead to inaccurate prediction and complex computation of background level for existing methods, which results in severe degradation of CFAR detection performance. To address the problem of CFAR detection in the heterogeneous Weibull background, two robust CFAR detectors capable of detecting multiple targets accurately and efficiently are developed. Specifically, a Bayesian predictive inference detection model is derived to establish a standard CFAR detection framework. Then, combining the interference control approach, a Bayesian interference control CFAR (BIC-CFAR) detector in the heterogeneous Weibull background is proposed. Next, to alleviate the high computational complexity faced by the BIC-CFAR detector, a Bayesian area interference control CFAR (BAIC-CFAR) detector is designed to predict and compensate interferences simultaneously, resulting in the improvement of anti-interference capability while dramatically reducing computational complexity. Simulations and real-data experiments are conducted in heterogeneous Weibull background, which demonstrates 10% improvement in detection probability and 30% reduction in computational time.

Abstract:To improve the capability of radar detection in a time-varying maritime environment, an algorithm was proposed and analyzed in this paper that can be applied to determine the shape and scale parameters of the K-distributed model using the radar parameters and environmental information under the context of K-distributed sea clutter, and improved the original algorithm to improve the accuracy of the parameter estimation algorithm. Furthermore, a CFAR detector capable of identifying the characteristics of sea clutter distribution was developed. It can estimate the parameters of K-distributed model for sea clutter in real time using both radar parameters and environmental perception information, thus improving the accuracy of clutter background estimation. When the false alarm rate reaches a certain level, the adaptive threshold factor can be obtained for the CFAR detector proposed in this paper, thus improving the effectiveness of control on the CFAR detector. As suggested by the simulation results, the proposed method outperforms the CFAR detector with fixed parameters in the capability of detection and robustness under the context of K-distributed clutter.

Abstract:This paper studies the necessity of local CFAR processing in CFAR detection with multisensors. This necessity is shown by comparison between centralized CFAR detection and the distributed CFAR detection scheme based on local CFAR processing, under three typical backgrounds and in several cases of mismatching rho, the relative ratio of local clutter power level in sensors in a homogeneous background. Results show that centralized CFAR processing can not be considered as CFAR without exact prior knowledge of rho. In addition, even if the knowledge of rho is available. the great difference among local clutter power levels can also result in severe performance degradation of centralized CFAR processing. In contrast, the distributed CFAP, detection based on local CFAR processing is not affected by rho at all, a fact which was proposed in a previous published paper [2]. Therefore the CFAR processing must be made locally in sensors for CFAR detection with multisensors.

Abstract:Clutter has a strong interference on target detection. Different statistical model should be applied to specific situation. In this paper, we propose a function of covariance matrix based algorithm to detect target under clutter environment. The statistical covariance matrices with and without target are usually different, thus we can find the target present or absent. The advantage of proposed algorithm is it works effectively with limited sample data when target signal strength is very weak. The probabilities of detection versus SNR and ROC curves using sinusoidal target on Rayleigh distribution clutter model, log-normal distribution clutter model, and Weibull distribution clutter model show that the algorithm is valid for different clutter models. Abstract:Adaptive detection of a sparsely distributed target is addressed without secondary data, in non-Gaussian clutter modelled as a spherically invariant random vector. By utilising different estimators of covariance matrix, an adaptive detection scheme is proposed for a sparsely distributed target, based on the generalised likelihood ratio test and the order statistics. Moreover, the adaptive detector with recursive estimator holds approximate constant false alarm rate property with respect to the clutter covariance matrix structure and the statistics of the texture. The performance assessment conducted by Monte-Carlo simulation confirms the effectiveness of the proposed detectors.

Abstract:Constant False Alarm Rate (CFAR) processing, a critical automated target detection method in radar systems, has been extensively studied for its capabilities. Nonetheless, complex backgrounds and the advancements in stealth technology pose considerable challenges for CFAR in detecting dim targets. To tackle this issue, an adaptive CFAR detection algorithm is proposed that employs two statistically robust models, the Fisher distribution and generalized gamma distribution (GΓD) for clutter modeling. Leveraging the strengths of neural networks in online model recognition, this method can achieve CFAR detection of low signal-to-clutter ratio (SCR) signals in diverse clutter scenarios. Experimental results using high-resolution range profiles (HRRP) demonstrate that, in comparison to traditional CFAR detection methods, this approach exhibits superior performance.

Abstract:In the context of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems, the Gamma distribution stands out as a strong contender for clutter modeling. The cell-averaging constant false alarm rate (CA-CFAR) detector has frequently been employed as a well-balanced detection technique, ensuring a blend of high performance and comparatively low complexity. In this study, we evaluate, in an exact manner, the CA-CFAR detector's performance in an SAR system, assuming the presence of correlated Gamma-distributed clutter. To this aim, we derive novel exact expressions for the probability of detection (PD) and the probability of false alarm (PFA), simplifying their runtime evaluations without depending on specific mathematical software. The independent and identically distributed (IID) and independent not identically distributed (INID) cases are also analyzed. In particular, for the IID case, our derived PD and PFA expressions are given in closed form. Our analytical findings are validated through Monte Carlo simulations.

A New Adaptive CFAR Detector

Abstract:A new CFAR detector based on Grubbs statistic called G-CFAR detector is proposed and its detection architecture is given.in this paper. Also the values of the threshold in different confidence level are given. The G-CFAR is evaluated through Monte-Carlo simulation in various environments. In homogeneous background, the performance of G-CFAR shows a little worse than that of CA-CFAR. In multiple targets background, the G-CFAR performs robustly, especially when the interfering targets are not confined to a single half of the reference window, the G-CFAR keeps good performance, while the VI-CFAR can not detect the targets effectively .

Abstract:The generalized Wald test algorithm is derived to implement range-distributed targets detection embedded in K-distributed clutter which is modeled as a spherically invariant random process(SIRP).The range-distributed target is modeled as a subspace random signal.The algorithm performs an incoherent processing over all the cells under test and is shown that it ensures CFAR property with respect to the unknown statistics of the clutter texture component.First of all,every cell under test is computed by the ratio of the energy of the whitened data that lies in the transformed signal subspace to the energy of it that lies in the orthogonal subspace, the so-called noise subspace.And then,the final decision statistics is the summation of the ratio in every cell under test.Performances of the proposed detector are assessed by means of Monte Carlo simulation strategy.In particular,the simulation results highlight that the proposed detector has better detection performances compared with adaptive Wald receiver which was proposed in[5].

Abstract:The traditional CFAR processors are based on the sliding-window concept, which have substantial performance degradation under nonhomogeneity. Owing to temporal processing and the exploitation of the local homogeneity of the map cell, the clutter-map procedure acquires enhanced robustness with little CFAR losses. In this paper, a Gaussian biparametric clutter-map constant false alarm rate (GBCM-CFAR) processor is proposed which merges the clutter-map technique and noncoherent integration together. It can approximately achieve CFAR independent of the original clutter distribution. The performance in the presence of fast point targets is assessed, in the examples of Weibull and lognormal clutter, in order to elicit the effect of the system parameters. Its performance is close to that of the optimum Neyman-Pearson detector with little CFAR losses in homogeneous environments. It is also suitable to deal with the nonhomogeneous situation.

Abstract:Constant false alarm rate (CFAR) detectors are developed to track changes in clutter intensities and to adapt the detection threshold to maintain a constant probability of false alarms. These adaptive thresholding mechanisms are initially intended when both target and clutter are exponentially distributed, and they degrade in performance when applied to newer target and clutter models. So, in application scenarios like Airborne Warning and Control Systems (AWACS) and ship remote sensing, when both the target and clutter are Pareto distributed, instead of the conventional way of tweaking the existing adaptive-thresholding CFAR detector, we pose the detection problem as a two-sample, Pareto vs. Pareto composite hypothesis testing problem. Considering no knowledge of both scale and shape parameters of Pareto distributed clutter, we derive the new adaptive-thresholding detector based on the generalized likelihood ratio test (GLRT) statistic. We further show that our proposed adaptive thresholding detector has a CFAR property and provide extensive simulation results to demonstrate the performance of the proposed detector.

Abstract:In the clutter-dominated disturbance modeled as spherically invariant random vectors with the same covariance matrix and possibly correlated texture components, we propose an estimator of covariance matrix, which exploits all secondary data fully and introduces a constraint of matrix trace. Moreover, its adaptive target detection application is investigated. For match between the estimated clutter group size and the actual one, the adaptive normalized matched filter (ANMF) with the new estimator of any number of iterations theoretically ensures the constant false alarm rate (CFAR) property, with respect to the normalized clutter covariance matrix and the statistics of the texture. Furthermore, the simulation results show that it still guarantees the approximate CFAR property for mismatch cases and has an acceptable loss with respect to its nonadaptive counterpart in cases of relevant interest for radar applications. Finally, the effectiveness of ANMF with the proposed estimator is confirmed by Monte Carlo simulation.

Abstract:When the compound-Gaussian clutters are cluttered into groups of data with one and the same value of the texture, the homogeneous clutter-clustered model is generalized, and a generalized clutter clustered model is established. Moreover, a generalized likelihood ratio test detector based on the generalized clutter-clustered (GCC-GLRT) is proposed, and the formula relating false alarm probability to detection threshold is deduced. The GCC-GLRT solves the problem that the CC-GLRT is not CFAR in inhomogeneous clutter-clustered background. The simulation results show that the GCC-GLRT can overcome the collapsing loss of the NSDD-GLRT detecting spare scatterers target and improve the detection performance of the detector.
A Novel CFAR Algorithm for Multi-target Detection with FMCW Radar

Abstract:Constant false alarm rate (CFAR) detection plays a vital role in frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar systems. Most existing CFAR algorithms need to estimate background level before determining the detection threshold. In a multi-target scene, existence of interference targets could cause inaccurate estimation of background level, which will then lead to severely degraded performance of the CFAR algorithm. This is also called multi-target shadowing effect. To overcome the challenge, a compressed sensing CFAR (CS-CFAR) is proposed in this work, which detects the target of interest (TOI) relying on the correlation between the linear measurements of signal and the sensing matrix, instead of relying on an estimated background level as in conventional CFAR algorithms, and achieves a required false alarm rate by estimating the distributed parameters of reduced sample model. Through doing so the proposed CS-CFAR algorithm effectively mitigates impact of interference targets on the detection performance. Superiority of the proposed algorithm over the conventional ones in multi-target scenarios is verified by both simulation and test results.

Abstract:In the non-Gaussian clutter modeled as independent and identically distributed spherically invariant random vectors, three estimators of sample covariance matrix (SCM), normalized sample covariance matrix (NSCM) and the corresponding recursive estimator (NSCM-RE) are analyzed. Based on the uniform theorem, three corresponding adaptive normalized matched filters (ANMF) are evaluated from the standpoint of constant false alarm rate (CFAR) property. The theoretical results demonstrate that the SCM-ANMF is only CFAR to the normalized clutter covariance matrix (NCCM); the NSCM-ANMF is only CFAR to the clutter power level; and the NSCM-RE-ANMF with finite number of iterations is still not CFAR to the NCCM. To ensure CFAR property of ANMF, an adaptive estimator (AE) is devised. Moreover, with AE as the initialization matrix for the iterations, the AE-RE is proposed. With finite number of iterations, the corresponding AE-REANMF guarantees CFAR property to both of the NCCM and the clutter power level. Finally, the performance assessment conducted by Monte Carlo simulation confirms the effectiveness of the proposed detectors.
Model Validation of the Extremely Heterogeneous SAR Clutter and Its CFAR Detection

Abstract:Based on real extremely heterogeneous synthetic aperture radar(SAR) urban clutter data and Cramer-Von Mises distance,the goodness-of-fit tests were done via Rayleigh distribution,Weibull distribution,K distribution and G distribution,respectively.It is shown that the Rayleigh distribution and Weibull distribution may be mismatched and the K distribution may be only partly matched,but the G distribution may model the real data very well.Furthermore,for the CFAR(Constant False Alarm Rate) detection under the G distributed clutter,the curves of the signal-to-noise ratio versus shape parameter and numbers of reference cells were presented to meet the given detection performance,and the reason was also analyzed that the CFAR losses decrease with the increasing of the distribution parameter.Also,an effective CFAR threshold calculating method was proposed at last.

Abstract:Based on completely different properties of the signal and noise in wavelet transform, the noise confidence factor is introduced to estimate the clutter power level by means of CM( Censored Method). A signal CFAR detection method with soft threshold is proposed. The theoretical analysis shows the CFAR characteristic of the method under background with Gaussian distribution clutter. And the experiment results of signal processing demonstrate that this method can detect the targets in other different clutters effectively, which shows the method' s robustness and effectiveness.
