Abstract:The composite solid oxide super acid Pt-SO4 2- /ZrO2-Al2O3 catalyst was prepared, and its structure, surface properties and catalytic activities for n-butane isomerization reaction were investigated by XRD, XPS, SEM, FT-IR. The results showed that the optimum A12O3 loading in the catalyst made ZrO2 tetragonal phase stable, prevented the transformation of ZrO2 from tetragonal phase to monoclinic phase. Pt doping on SO 4 2- /ZrO2-Al2O3 improved the catalytic activities for n-butane isomerization reaction. When the content of Al was 1.5% in the catalyst, the yield of i-butane was 37%, and its selectivity reached 70% above.

Abstract:The n-butane isomerization reaction on Al-promoted zirconia catalysts modified by persulfate was studied both at low temperature in the absence of hydrogen and at high temperature in the presence of hydrogen. The addition of Al shows a significant enhancement in the activity and stability of the samples for n-butane isomerization at 250°C. After running on stream for 200 h, the n-butane conversion on the catalyst containing 3 mol% Al2O3 remains steady at 72% of its equilibrium conversion and no observable trend of further deactivation has been observed. The different behavior of the with or without Al-promoted catalysts at low temperature and high temperature is probably associated with a change of reaction mechanism from bimolecular to monomolecular. Microcalorimetric measurements of ammonia adsorption on catalysts reveal that the remarkable activity and stability of the Al-promoted catalysts are caused by an appropriate distribution of acid site strengths and an enhancement in the number of acid sites with intermediate acid strengths effective for the n-butane isomerization reaction.

Abstract:The isomerization of n-butane over Pt-promoted/Al2O3-promoted sulfated zirconia (Pt/SZA) catalyst in comparison with SZA was studied in the presence of H2 at 250°C. Catalysts prepared using 1N H2SO4 are slightly more active than those prepared using 2N H2SO4. The optimum calcination temperature for Pt/SZA was found to be 650°C, same as for SZA catalyst. The presence of platinum improves the catalytic stability and isomerization selectivity of SZA catalyst, particularly at low H2/n-butane ratio. Comparing the maximum activity displayed by both catalysts, Pt/SZA is more active than SZA for n-butane isomerization, especially at the steady state. Pre-treating the Pt/SZA catalyst in H2 at 350°C before the reaction results in a significant loss in activity. The mechanical mixture of Pt/Al2O3 and SZA exhibits much higher activity than Pt/SZA catalyst, probably due to a change of reaction mechanism from monofunctional over the latter catalyst to bifunctional over the former. The initiation step of n-butane isomerization over SZA catalyst is discussed.

Abstract:Solid superacid catalysts SO42-/ZrO2 (SZ) supported on gamma-Al2O3 and SiO2 (named SZ/Al2O3 and SZ/SiO2, respectively) were prepared by an impregnation method. Their catalytic behaviors of for n-butane isomerization at low temperature in steady state system and at high temperature in flow system were studied. Large improvements of catalytic activities were observed on the SZ/Al2O3 catalysts. In the flow system, the steady activity of the most active sample, 60% SZ/Al2O3, is 2.5 times more active than that of the hulk SZ. However, the activities of the SZ/SiO2 catalysts are lower than that of hulk SZ. The texture properties of the catalysts were studied by the methods of XRD and the adsorption of N-2. Experimental results of sulfur content analysis and IR of adsorbed pyridine show that the acid strength and amount of strong acid sites on 60% SZ/Al2O3 sample are higher than those on bulk SZ, while the amount of acid sites is lower on 60% SZ/SiO2. The different activities for the SZ/Al2O3 catalysts and the eSZ/SiO2 catalysts are due to the differences of superacidity. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Some solid acids, including sulfated zirconia and certain industrial isomerization catalysts, catalyze two types of n-butane isomerizations, avoiding primary carbenium ions or carbonium ions: (1) an internal rearrangement of the C atoms in n-butane and (2) skeletal isomerization of n-butane to iso-butane. No superacid sites are required for these reactions. The skeletal isomerization is an intermolecular reaction, involving a C8 intermediate. Easily accessible Brønsted acid sites and small amounts of olefin are crucial. Spectroscopic examination of the acid sites on sulfated zirconia shows that they are not stronger than the acid sites in zeolites such as HY. The butane isomerization rate is suppressed by CO, even when no CO is adsorbed on Lewis sites; formation of oxocarbenium ions is likely. The decisive role of Brønsted acid sites is demonstrated by results on deuterated catalysts.

The most active sample 60%SZ/Al2O3 is not only low expensive compared to the traditional bulk SZ due to the high price of ZrO2, but also increases the steady activity about 50% for n-butane isomerization in the presence of H2 at 523 K in comparison with the bulk SZ catalyst.

Isomerization of n-butane to iso-butane over this catalyst with a C4 feed from which olefins and dienes were rigorously removed (estimated olefin/paraffin ratio, 10-15) is slow and so is the rate of catalyst deactivation. After 25 min reaction the turnover frequency, based on the number of surface protons detected by exchange against deuterium, is ��10-4 s-1. At a conversion of 6.6% n-butane to iso-butane, each surface site has turned over one molecule; all D atoms have been exchanged against H atoms from the butane. The iso-C4 product initially contains roughly 20% iso-C4-d1. At the same stage, the n-C4 contains 4% n-C4-d1. In view of the large n-C4/ iso-C4 ratio at this stage, this means that more D atoms have moved into n-C4 molecules than into iso-C4 molecules. This indicates the participation of surface Br?nsted sites in exchange reactions and events such as the previously detected (V. Adeeva et al. Catal. Lett. 33, 135 (1995)) intramolecular rearrangement of C atoms in n-butane via a protonated cyclopropane intermediate. The absence of any molecules with more than one D atom indicates that all olefin molecules at the surface of this catalyst are tied up as "carbenium ions" or as surface alkoxy groups. ? 1997 Academic Press.

Abstract:A mesostructured sulfated zirconia with a large surface area (189 m 2 /g) has been successfully prepared using a triblock copolymer as a structure-directing agent. The resulting material was characterized by XRD, TEM, nitrogen adsorption, FTIR and TG/DTA, which suggested that the mesostructured sulfated zirconia was tetragonal crystalline. Catalytic testing showed that the mesostructured sulfated zirconia was much more active than conventional sulfated zirconia for n-butane isomerization.

Abstract:The effect of activation temperature, reaction temperature, space velocity and H2/C4 ratio on the activity and selectivity of SO4 2-/ZrO2 and Pt/SO4 2-/ ZrO2 catalysts for n-butane isomerization was studied. High H2/C4 ratio may improve markedly the stability and steady-state activity of the SO4 2-/ZrO2 catalyst. Supporting the same catalyst with 0. 5% Pt may reduce the requisite H2/C4 ratio. The fast deactivation of the catalysts at the initial period of the reaction is mainly caused by coking. After regeneration the activity of the catalyst can be recovered almost completely.

Abstract:In order to study the effect that the modified ZSM - 35 as a catalyst brings to n-butene isomerization catalysis. In this paper, by considering the performance analysis brought by different silica alumina ratio, reaction temperature, concentration of nitrogen and macro porous silica gel embellish acting on butene isomerization reaction of modified ZSM - 35 molecular sieve catalyst , Al2O3 samples being "15" shows better performance; Adding appropriate amount of silicon carbide catalyst or modified silicone can further improve the selectivity of butene; Nitrogen dilution has certain help in improving butene isomerization reaction performance.
