Abstract:A novel deep-cavity calixarene, p-[1-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-1-methylethyl]calix[8]arene 1 was synthesized and its complexation with aromatic compounds was examined, Reaction of p-[1-(4-methoxyphenyl)-1-methylethyl]phenol 2 with paraformaldehyde under various conditions only resulted in p-[1-(4-methoxyphenyl)-1-methylethyl]calix[8]arene 3, and no corresponding calix[4]arene and calix[6]arene were detected, Removal of the methyl in the ether groups of 3 afforded 1 in 80% yield, Solubilization, fluorescence and photochemical probe studies demonstrated that 1 forms inclusion complexes with a variety of aromatic compounds in polar non-aqueous solutions.

Abstract:Starting from both the bridging nitrogen atom-functionalized and the upper rim-functionalized N,O-bridged calix[1]arene[4]pyridine reactants, different types of heteracalixaromatics-C-60 dyads and triads of varied spacers were expediently synthesized using mainly the click reaction as the key step. By means of various spectroscopic methods, the heteracalixaromatics-C-60 dyads and triads obtained have been shown to form intramolecular self-inclusion complexes rather than oligomers or polymers in solution because of a flexible spacer in between the heteracalixaromatic ring and C-60 moiety. The current study, coupled with previous investigations, would provide the guideline for the construction of supramolecular fullerene motifs based on molecular design of the dyads and triads.

Abstract:The electrochemical behavior of the drop-coated films of (C-60)(2)-calix[6]arene complex was studied in acetonitrile as well as in a mixed solvent of acetonitrile and water (3:2, v/v). The (C-60)(2)-calix[6]arene complex films were characterized by two pairs of cyclic voltammetry peaks in the mixed solvent. The fir st reduction/reoxidation process is a two-electron transfer reaction, and the second one is also a two-electron transfer reaction. Compared to the reduction/reoxidation of a pristine C-60 film, complexion of C-60 within the film results in a positive potential shift of the first cathodic peak and a negative potential shift of the two anodic peaks.

Abstract:The complex stability constants (K-S) and thermodynamic parameters (Delta H degrees and T Delta S degrees) for 1: 1 intermolecular complexation of three water-soluble calixarenes, that is, p-sulfonato calix[4]arene (C4AS), p-sulfonato thiacalix[4]arene (TCAS), and p-sulfonato calix[5]arene (C5AS), with dipyridines (4-DPD and 2-DPD) and 1,10-phenanthroline (Phen) have been determined by means of titration microcalorimetry in an acidic buffer solution (pH = 2.0) at 298.15 K, and their binding modes have been investigated by H-1 NMR and 2D ROESY NMR spectroscopy. The results obtained indicate that 4-DPD, 2-DPD, and Phen are included in the cavity of C5AS with the different patterns, this is, accumbent for 4-DPD, acclivitous for 2-DPD and Phen, while Phen is included upright in the cavity of C4AS. The Ks values decrease with increasing cavity size of host molecules but enhance with extending conjugation degree of guest molecules, and thus C4AS exhibits an exceptionally high Phen/4-DPD selectivity of 22.5. Thermodynamically, the complexation of DPDs/Phen with the water-soluble calixarenes is obviously enthalpy-driven, but the molecular selectivity is mainly governed by the entropy term.

Abstract:Disulfane-linked bisazacalix[n]pyridines (n=4, 7) were synthesized for the first time using a macrocyclic fragment coupling approach followed by post-macrocyclization photoreaction with ethanethioic acid and hydrolysis under basic conditions. The bis-macrocyclic compounds acted as strong receptors to form 1 : 1 complex with C-60 and C-70, giving a binding constant (K-a(1: 1)) up to 107000 L.mol(-1). The cooperation of two mono-macrocyclic improved binding affinity to fullerenes.

Abstract:The first host-guest supramolecular complex of the endohedral metallofullerene Dy@C-82 and p-tert-butylcalix[8]arene (C8A) (1:1) has been prepared in solution. Langmuir films of the [Dy@C-82-C8A] complex have been studied systematically in comparison with films of the [C-60-C8A] complex, The Langmuir film formation of both complexes was found to be sensitively dependent on the initial concentration of the spreading solution. This concentration dependence is explained in terms of conformational changes at different concentrations. While the formation of the complex [C-60-C8A] from the mixture of C-60/C8A was facile at the air/water interface, this was not the case for [Dy@C-82-C8A] due to the slower complexation rate and the aggregation tendency of the endohedral metallofullerene molecules. Langmuir-Blodgett films of the [Dy@C-82-C8A] and [C-60-C8A] complexes have been characterized by UV-vis absorption spectroscopy.

Abstract:Two pairs of novel triptycene-derived calix[6]arenes 4a,b and 5a,b have been efficiently synthesized through both one-pot and two-step fragment-coupling strategies starting from 2,7-bis(hydroxymethyl)-1,8-dimethoxytriptycene 1. Subsequent demethylation of 4a,b and 5a,b with BBr(3) in dry dichloromethane gave the macrocyclic compounds 6a,b and 7a,b. Treatment of either 4a or 6a with AlCl(3) resulted in the same debutylated product 8, while 9 was similarly obtained from either 5a or 7a. Structural studies revealed that all of the macrocycles have well-defined structures with fixed conformations both in solution and in the solid state owing to the introduction of the triptycene moiety with a rigid three-dimensional (3D) structure, making them very different from their classical calix[6]arene counterparts. As a consequence, it was found that all of these the triptycene-derived calix[6]arenes could encapsulate small neutral molecules in their cavities in the solid state. Moreover, it was also found that the macrocycles 4b and 5b showed highly efficient complexation abilities toward fullerenes C(60) and C(70), forming 1:1 complexes with association constants ranging from (5.22+/-0.20) x 10(4) to (8.68+/-0.30) x 10(4) M(-1).

Abstract:Functionalized N,O-bridged calix[1]arene[4]pyridines, first examples of the odd-numbered heterocalixaromatics containing mixed heteroatom bridges and mixed aromatic units, have been synthesized from the Pd2(dba)3/dppp-catalyzed 2+3 macrocyclic fragment coupling reaction between readily available staring materials. These novel macrocyclic compounds, which adopted distorted 1,3-alternate conformation in solid state, were powerful host molecules able to form 1:1 complex with fullerene C60 in solution, giving binding constant up to 49,494M−1.

Abstract:Three Ce4+ complexes Ce(p-tert-butylcalix[4]arene) . (dmf)(4).H2O (Complex A), Ce(p-tert-butylcalix [6]arene)(2).(dmf)(10)(complex B) and Ce(p-tert-butylcalix[8]arene).(dmf)(4)(complex C) were prepared from N, N-dimethylforamide (dmf) solution of Ce(NO3)(3). Their thermal stability, optical properties and coordination features were investigated with thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis, ultraviolet and visible spectrophotometer, fluorescence spectrophotometer, infrared spectroscopy, and H-1 NMR spectrometer. In the solvents of C6H6, 1, 2-dichloroethane and dmf, complexes A and B can exhibit a ligand to metal charge transfer transition lying in ca. 20000 cm(-1) in the electronic spectra. Complex A displays a dimeric structure in C6D6 solution. Ce4+, ions in the complexes are coordinated by phenolic groups of the ligands, oxygen atoms of dmf molecules, and / or OH- ions.

Abstract:B3LYP/6–31G(d) hybrid HF/DFT calculations were carried out to determine the structural and electronic properties of the endohedral complex of C60 with tetrahedrane C4H4. It was demonstrated that C4H4 was seated in the center of the C60 cage and existed in a molecular form inside the fullerene. The formation of this complex was endothermic with inclusion energy of 141.05kcal/mol. C4H4 endohedral doping slightly perturbed the molecular orbitals of C60. The calculated HOMO–LUMO gaps, the electron affinity (EA) and the ionizational potential (IP) indicated that C4H4@C60 seemed to be more kinetically reactive than C60. The IR active modes and harmonic vibrational frequencies of C4H4@C60 were also discussed.

Abstract:Four novel cyclotriveratrylene (CTV) derivatives with three benzoate pendants bearing different aliphatic chains have been prepared in good yields, starting from CTV. The complexation behavior of these CTV derivatives towards C-60 in arene solvents has been measured by UV-visible spectroscopy and high complexation constants are obtained. It is observed that the complexation is promoted pronouncedly by introducing methyl ester groups to the aromatic pendants, while this promoting effect is reduced when the methyl groups are replaced by longer alkyl groups.

Abstract:Crystal structure of inclusion complex of 5, 17-di-t-butyl-26, 28-disubstituted calix[4]arene 3 with acetone, [(C54H58N2O6·CH3COCH3)·2CH3COCH3], was determined by X-ray crystallographic analysis. It possesses space group C2/c, with a = 26.277(8), b = 12.967(5), c = 20.355(4) Å, ß = 124.845(14)°, and Dcalc = 1.173 mg/m3 for Z = 4. Crystal data indicate that action of one molecule of compound 3 upon three molecules of acetone forms a clathrate intermolecular inclusion complex.

Abstract:A new calix[4]arene derivative, 11,23-bis(hydroxyiminomethyl)-25,27-dihydroxy-26,28-di-n-propoxycalix[4]-arene (B), was synthesized and a compound, with composition of B center dot 2CH(3)CN, was fully characterized. H-1 NMR showed that B in the B center dot 2CH(3)CN adopts a cone conformation. X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed the conformation found in solution. In the crystal network, self-inclusion phenomenon is present in a dimeric unit of B center dot 2CH(3)CN via embedding each other. The noncovalent interaction energies were calculated at B3LYP/6-311G(d) level and corrected by basis set superposition error (BSSE). In half a dimeric unit, one CH3CN is stabilized via hydrogen bonding formed between nitrogen atom of the acetonitrile and one hydroxyimino group, with bonding energy of -5.02 kJ center dot mol(-1), and the other one stabilized by hydrogen bonding formed between nitrogen atom of the acetonitrile and the other hydroxyimino group, with bonding energy of -14.23 kJ center dot mol(-1), and by inclusion to hydrophobic cavity of the other half of the dimeric unit via C-H center dot center dot center dot pi interaction, with bonding energy of -3.77 kJ center dot mol(-1), doubling of which is a driving force for embedding two B center dot 2CH(3)CN together.
