Abstract:Attempts to develop a ring-opening polymerization (ROP) approach to polymeric zirconocene complexes are reported. A new silicon-bridged [1][1] zirconocenophane, (SiMe2)(2)(eta (5)-C5H3)(2)Zr(NEt2)(2) (3a), was synthesized by reaction of Zr(NEt2)(4) with (C5H4)(2)(SiMe2)(2) (4) Single-crystal X-ray diffraction revealed a highly tilted structure with an angle of 73.1(4)degrees, a significant increase over the untethered compound (eta (5)-MeC5H4)(2)ZrCl2 (2), which possesses a tilt angle of 54.2 degrees. This and the related compounds (SiMe2)(eta (5)-C5H4)(2)MCl2 (1a, M = Ti; Ib, M = Zr) and (SiMe2)(2)(eta (5)-C5H3)(2)ZrCl2 (3b) were tested for transition-metal catalyzed ROP behavior in the presence of Pt(0) catalysts but were found to be inactive. The novel spirocyclic silacyclobutane-bridged monomer (CH2)(3)Si(eta (5)-C5H4)(2)ZrCl2 (7b) was prepared via a "fly trap" amine elimination reaction between cyclotrimethylenedicyclopentadienylsilane (8) and Zr(NMe2)(4); this initially yielded (CH2)(3)Si(eta (5)-C5H4)(2)Zr(NMe2)(2) (7a), which was converted to 7b by reaction with a slight excess of Me3SiCl. 7a and 7b were characterized by Si-29, C-13, and H-1 NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry as well as single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Both showed moderate tilt angles (61.7(2)degrees and 59.69(7)degrees, respectively) as well as highly strained silacyclobutane rings with C-Si-C bond angles of 79.7(2)degrees and 80.64(10)4 respectively. Transition-metal-catalyzed ROP of 7b led to the formation of the polycarbosilane [(CH2)(3)Si(eta (5)-C5H4)(2)ZrCl2](n) (10). Both the soluble and insoluble fractions of 10 were characterized by CP-MAS Si-29 and C-13 NMR, and the soluble, oligomeric fraction was further characterized by solution Si-29, C-13,and H-1 NMR. Complexes 7a, 7b, and polyzirconocene 10 were found to exhibit moderate activity as ethylene polymerization catalysts.
Aluminum bis(iminophosphorano)methanide and methandiide complexes—transition metal-free ethylene polymerization cationic catalyst precursors

Abstract:The catalytic activity of a new family of aluminum bis(iminophosphorano)methanide and methandiide complexes (1–5) toward olefin polymerization has been evaluated. The complexes (1–3) are monomeric methanide complexes of the form [κN,κN′-{(Me3SiNP(Ph)2)2CH}Al(Cl)R] (R=Et) (1) or [κN,κN′-{(Me3SiNP(Ph)2)2CH}AlR2} (R=Me, Bu) (2, 3) which have a structure reminiscent of R2Al(acac) complexes. These systems are moderately effective as transition metal-free ethylene polymerization catalysts when activated by trityl tetrafluoroborate yielding slurry polymerization activities in the range of 3–68g polymer/(mmol Alh) (normalized to 1atm) under normal industrial conditions. A remarkable bis(iminophosphorano)methandiide complex [κC,κC,κN,κN′-{(Me3SiNP(Ph)2)2C}(R2Al)2] (R=Me) (4) which is based on a spirocyclic carbon center subtended by two AlMe2 units (each of which is further coordinated with an imine group) gave, under similar catalytic activation and reaction conditions, very high polymerization activity (2×103g polymer/(mmol Alh)) for ethylene. Solution polymerization activity was also high. This system also co-polymerized ethylene and 1-octene. The analog 5 wherein R=Bu was not so effective. These latter complexes indicate that dialuminum species may provide effective transition metal-free olefin polymerization systems.

Abstract:Ethylene polymerization was studied using a variety of iminophosphonamide (PN2) complexes of zirconium. Bis(PN2) dichloride complexes [Ph2P(NR′)2]2ZrX2 (X = Cl; 1a: R′ = p-tolyl; 1b: R′ = Bn; 1c: R′ = C6F5) or dimethyl complexes (X = Me; 2a: R′ = p-tolyl; 2b: R′ = Bn) and cyclopentadienyl(PN2)zirconium dichloride complexes [η5-C5R′′5][R2P(NR′)2]ZrCl2 (3a: R′ = p-tolyl, R = Ph, R′′ = H; 3b: R′ = SiMe3, R = Et, R′′ = H; 3c: R′ = C6F5, R = Ph, R′′ = H; 3e: R′ = 3,5-(CF3)2Ph, R = Ph, R′′ = H; 3f: R′ = 3,5-(CF3)2Ph, R = Ph, R′′ = Me) or dimethyl analogs [η5-C5H5][R2P(NR′)2]ZrMe2 (4a: R′ = p-tolyl, R = Ph; 4b: R′ = SiMe3, R = Et) were evaluated under a range of conditions using methylaluminoxane (PMAO) activator. Complexes 1 and 2 behave as precursors to single-site polymerization catalysts under the conditions studied, while complexes 3 or dialkyls 4 show more complex behavior and formation of poly(ethylene) with a bimodal molecular weight distribution. In contrast, activation of dialkyl complexes 4 with [Ph3C][B(C6F5)4] and polymerization in the presence of small amounts of PMAO or TIBAL as scavenger, led to single-site behavior. PMAO reacts with the neutral dialkyls via ligand abstraction to produce a number of P-containing species that may explain the multi-site behavior observed when using this activator. Dialkyls 4 react cleanly with [Ph3C][B(C6F5)4] in haloarene or even dichloromethane solution to furnish the corresponding cationic alkyls 5, which were characterized by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy. Fluxional dinuclear species are formed in the presence of excess dialkyl and these are susceptible to CH activation to form µ-Me,µ-CH2 complexes one of which could be isolated in pure form. The cationic alkyls initiate the polymerization of 1-hexene at room temperature in chlorobenzene solution, but extensive chain transfer occurs and the systems are not living.Key words: single site, early metal olefin polymerization catalysis.

Abstract:The generally accepted coordination–insertion mechanisms of scandium-alkoxide initiated ring-opening polymerizations of ɛ-caprolactone (CL), trimethylene carbonate (TMC) and (S,S)-lactide (LLA) were investigated using density functional theory calculations. The geometries and corresponding energies of four key proposed intermediates were evaluated and found consistent with these structures. The transition states corresponding to monomer addition indicate a penta-coordinate scandium and have nearly the same energies for all monomers. Thus CL, TMC and LLA undergo similar processes with relatively small differences in the energies of Sc-monomer coordination but the pre-transition state complex of TMC is much lower in energy than that of the other monomers. The dipole moments of the intermediates close to the transition states and the transition states themselves in all cases are lower than those of the reactants predicting faster reaction rates in low polarity solvents, consistent with experimental results. This study may be applicable to ring-opening polymerizations mediated by yttrium and other rare earth complexes.

Abstract:Rare earth solid superacid, SO2−4/TiO2/Ln3+, was successfully developed from SO2−4/TiO2 by modifying with the rare earth ion. It showed a good behavior in initiating ring-opening polymerization of chloromethyl thiirane (CMT). A striking characteristic of this polymerization was that poly(CMT) produced in fine yield possessed a molecular weight of 40000–50000, rather higher than previously reported. The conditions for the preparation of rare earth solid superacid and for CMT polymerization were thoroughly studied. It was found that the increase of Nd3+ concentration in the solution, in which the solid was immersed, enhanced the amount of sulfur absorbed on the surface of TiO2, which is essential for generation of strong acidity, and so improved the catalytic activity. Therefore, it is reasonable to suggest that the role of Ln3+ is mainly to retard the loss of sulfur in the calcination treatment. Heating at 300–350°C in vacuum almost deactivated the rare earth solid superacid. However, its activity was restored successfully by adding a small suitable amount of water. This clearly indicates that the catalytic center is a Brönsted acid site other than a Lewis one. A chelating bidentate structure for superacid center and a cationic process for CMT polymerization were proposed.
Alkyl Substituents Triggered an Unexpected Formation of Mono‐and Dinuclear Zirconium Hydrazonate Complexes: Synthesis, Characterization and Their Catalytic Behavior Toward Ethylene Polymerization

Abstract:Mononuclear zirconium complex 3a of the molecular identity [Zr[η2‐(C4H3O)C (Et) = NNPh]Cl3(THF)2], dinuclear zirconium complexes 3b [{Zr[η2‐(C4H3O)C(i‐Pr) = NNPh]2}2(μ2‐Cl)3(μ3‐Cl)2Li(Et2O)] and 3c [{Zr[η2‐(C4H3O)C(t‐Bu) = NNPh]2}2Cl2(μ2‐Cl)2] have been synthesized by the treatment of lithium salt of (C4H3O)C(R) = NNHPh (R = CH3CH2, 1a; R = (CH3)2CH, 1b; R = (CH3)3C, 1c), with different molar ratios of anhydrous zirconium tetrachloride. Of these, complex 3b was formed with lithium adduct and no such adduct was found in complex 3c. Compound 1a and all the zirconium complexes (3a‐3c) were structurally characterized by single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction studies. Thus, it revealed that each hydrazonato ligand acts in a strained η2‐coordination fashion for the three zirconium complexes. The molecular structures of the three zirconium complexes (3a‐3c) reveal the existence of intramolecular hydrogen bonding interactions. Interestingly, complexes 3a and 3b assemble into a two‐dimensional network structure through intermolecular hydrogen‐bonding interactions. Upon activation with methylaluminoxane (MAO), all the complexes namely 3a, 3b, and 3c exhibited moderate catalytic activities toward ethylene polymerization and produced high molecular weight polyethylene with narrow molecular weight distributions.

Abstract:Rare earth (RE) catalysts exhibit extremely high catalytic activity in ring-opening polymerization. This work reviews the application of rare earth catalysts in ring-opening polymerizations of lactones, lactides, cyclic ethers, cyclic carbonates and cyclic carboxyanhydrides in the past decade. Compared to other transition metals and main group elements, RE elements have larger cationic radii which allow for higher coordination numbers and more coordination modes, endowing RE catalysts with high catalytic activity. These characteristics not only fuel the widespread use of new RE catalysts in pursuing high molecular weight and polymerization rate of intensively studied monomers, such as epsilon-caprolactone (CL), lactide (LA) and beta-butyllactone (BBL), but also unleash the polymerization of traditionally non-polymerizable gamma-butyrolactone (gamma-BL) and its derivatives. The inherent low strain energy of the five-membered ring imparts monomer recyclability into the corresponding polymer. Furthermore, stereoselective polymerization of racemic monomers can be realized by RE catalysts containing chiral ligands with large steric hindrance. Slight modification of ligands gives rise to tailored or even inverted stereoregularity of polymers. The unique advantages of RE catalysts in the controllability of polymerization process and polymer structure are illustrated by discussing the relationship between catalyst structures and polymerization results. In addition, a novel ring-opening polymerization catalyzed by RE compounds, named Janus polymerization is introduced. This new mechanism combines cationic and anionic polymerizations at two ends of a single propagating chain and thus provides a facile methodology to synthesize polymers with sophisticated chemical structures and topologies in one step. New catalysts and mechanisms of ring-opening polymerizations have attractive potentiality in begetting new materials.

Abstract:The mechanism and stereochemistry of molybdenum alkylidene catalyzed ring-opening metathesis polymerization have been investigated with model systems. Alkene significantly favors attacking on the CNO face of molybdenum alkylidene. All transition structures are in a distorted trigonal bipyramidal geometry, with the NH and one of the OR' groups axial. The alkene addition step is the rate determining step. The effects of OR' on the barrier of Mo=C bond rotation, the reactivity of alkylidene catalysts, and the stereo-preference of transition structures are discussed.

Abstract:In this paper, ring-opening polymerization of trimethylene carbonate (TMC) with rare earth (Nd, Y, La) p-tert-butylcalix[n]arene (n = 4, 6, and 8) complexes as catalysts has been studied. Poly(trimethylene carbonate) (PTMC) with M, of 21,400 was produced by bulk polymerization under the conditions as follows: [TMC](0)/[Nd] (molar ratio) = 1000, 80 degrees C, 8 h. Mechanism study reveals that the polymerization proceeds via a coordination mechanism.

Abstract:Ring opening polymerization of propylene oxide in the presence of a new type of catalytic system composed of chitosan-supported rare earth complex, triisobutyl aluminium, and acetylacetone and its kinetics have been studied for the first time. It has been found that the characteristics of this catalytic system are of high catalytic activity, of higher stereoselectivity, and of a high molecular weight polymer of 2 x 10(6). Kinetic studies show that the polymerization rate is first order with respect to monomer concentration and catalyst concentration, respectively. The apparent activation energy of the polymerization reaction is 37.1 kJ/mol. (C) 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Abstract:A series of new rare-earth metal bis(alkyl) complexes [L(1-3)Ln(CH2SiMe3)(2)(THF)(n)] (L-1 = MeC4H2SCH2NC6H4(Ph)(2)P=NC6H2Me3-2,4,6: Ln = Sc, n = 1 (1a); Ln = Lu, n = 1 (1b); L-2 = MeC4H2SCH2NC6H4(Ph)(2)P=NC6H3Et2-2,6: Ln = Sc, n = 1 (2a); Ln = Lu, n = 1 (2b); Ln = Y, n = 1 (2c); L-3 = MeC4H2SCH2NC6H4(Ph)(2)P=(NC6H3Pr2)-Pr-i-2,6: Ln = Sc, n = 0 (3a)) and (LSc)-Sc-4(CH2SiMe3)(2()THF) (4a) (L-4 = C6H5CH2NC6H4(Ph)(2)P=NC6H3Et2-2,6) have been prepared by reaction of rare-earth metal tris(alkyl)s with the corresponding HL1-4 ligands via alkane elimination. Complexes 1a, 1b, 2a-2c, and 4a are monomeric with a coordinating THF molecule. Each metal ion is coordinated by a NPN ligand, two trans-located atkyl groups, and a THF molecule, forming a distorted trigonal-bipyramidal geometry. Complex 3a is THF-free, adopting a distorted tetrahedron geometry. In combination with AlR3 and borate, these complexes have shown medium activity and good trans-1,4 selectivity for the polymerization of butadiene. The resultant polymer has moderate molecular weight (M-n = 10 000- 18 000) with narrow molecular weight distribution (M-w/M-n < 1.6) and trans-1,4 regularity varying from 49.2% up to 91.3%. The catalyst performances are strongly dependent on the ortho substituent of the N-aryl ring and the presence of the thiophene moiety of the ligands and the type of aluminum alkyls and the lanthanide metal used. The scandium complex 2a displays the highest trans-1,4 selectivity.

Abstract:The ring-opening polymerization of e-caprolactone ( CL) catalyzed by rare earth trifluoromethanesulfonate [ Ln( OTf)(3)] ( Ln = Nd, Er, La) catalysts was reported. The influences of rare earth element, catalyst concentration, polymerization time and temperature on the monomer conversion and polymer molecule weight were investigated. These catalysts exhibit a high catalytic activity with single active center. The polymerization may proceed via active chain end cationic machanism.
Synthesis and Characterization of Aluminum(iii) and Tin(ii) Complexes Supported by Diiminophosphinate Ligands and Their Application in Ring‐opening Polymerization Catalysis of Ε‐caprolactone

Abstract:A series of Al(III) and Sn(II) diiminophosphinate complexes have been synthesized. Reaction of Ph(ArCH2)P(=NBut)NHBut (Ar = Ph, 3; Ar = 8-quinolyl, 4) with AlR3 (R = Me, Et) gave aluminum complexes [R2Al{(NBut)(2)P(Ph)(CH2Ar)}] (R = Me, Ar = Ph, 5; R = Me, Ar = 8-quinolyl, 6; R = Et, Ar = Ph, 7; R = Et, Ar = quinolyl, 8). Lithiated 3 and 4 were treated with SnCl2 to afford tin(II) complexes [ClSn{(NBut)(2)P(Ph)(CH2Ar)}] (Ar = Ph, 9; Ar = 8-quinolyl, 10). Complex 9 was converted to [(F(Me3Si)(2)NSn{(NBut)(2)P(Ph)(CH2Ph)}] (11) by treatment with LiN(SiMe3)(2). Complex 11 was also obtained by reaction of 3 with [Sn{N(SiMe3)(2)}(2)], Complex 9 reacted with [LiOC6H4But-4] to yield [4-(BuC6H4OSn)-C-t{(NBut)(2)P(Ph)(CH2Ph)}] (12). Compounds 3-12 were characterized by NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. The structures of complexes 6, 10, and 11 were further characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction techniques. The catalytic activity of complexes 5-8, 11, and 12 toward the ring-opening polymerization of e-caprolactone (CL) was studied. In the presence of BzOH, the complexes catalyzed the ring-opening polymerization of E-CL in the activity order of 5 > 7 approximate to 8 > 6 >> 11 > 12, giving polymers with narrow molecular weight distributions. Abstract:AbstractThe scandium naphthenate/trialkylaluminum system was investigated as a catalyst in the polymerization of substituted alkynes. Phenylacetylene was converted to a moderately crystalline, high cis polymer. The alkyl‐substituted acetylenes produced rubbery or solid materials of relatively high molecular weight. Infrared (IR), ultraviolet (UV), 1H‐NMR, and 13C‐NMR studies of the polyalkylacetylenes revealed high cis conformation, but apparently twisted from planarity to decrease molecular orbital overlap in the polyconjugated chain.
Ring‐opening Metathesis Polymerization of Dicyclopentadiene Catalyzed by Titanium Tetrachloride Adduct Complexes with Oxygen‐containing Ligands

Abstract:Ring-opening metathesis polymerization of dicyclopentadiene catalyzed by TiCl4 . 2L/CH3Li system [where L is tetrahydropyran (I), dioxane, 2,5-dimethylfuran, or tetrahydrofurfyl alcohol] is reported. The obtained polymer was characterized by IR and H-1-NMR. These catalytic systems effectively promoted the polymerization reaction. Seven influencing factors are discussed. When the aging temperature was 0 degreesC, the aging time was 90 min, the polymerization temperature was 60 degreesC, Li/Ti was 1.5-2, and the monomer/catalyst molar ratio ranged between 30 and 50, the polymerization reaction catalyzed by complex 1 yielded better results within a shorter period of time. Ring-Opening Polymerization of Trimethylene Carbonate by Calix[8]Arene-Neodymium

Abstract:Ring-opening polymerization of trimethylene carbonate (TMC) with a rare earth calixarene compound as catalyst has been studied for the first time. The effect of TMC/Nd (molar ratio) and polymerization conditions were investigated in detail. It was found that calix[8]arene-neodymium is a highly effective catalyst for the bulk polymerization of TMC and gives high molecular weight (M-v = 60,000) polymer. The optimum conditions of TMC polymerization were found to be as follows:TMC/Nd (molar ratio) = 2,000, 80 degrees C, 16 h. The polymers were characterized by NMR, GPC and DSC. Studying the mechanism by NMR showed that the polymerization of TMC catalyzed by calix[8]arene-neodymium proceeds via a cationic mechanism.

Abstract:Ring-opening polymerization of epsilon-caprolactone has been carried out by using rare earth Schiff base complexes: lanthanide tris(N-phenyl-3,5-di-t-butylsalicylaldiminato)s [Ln(OPBS)(3)] as single component catalyst for the first time. The influences of different rare earth elements, monomer and catalyst concentration as well as reaction time on the polymerization were investigated. Mechanism studies showed that monomer inserts into the active site with the acyl-oxygen bond scission rather than the break of alkyl-oxygen bond.
