Abstract:X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) and in-situ Raman spectroscopy were used to study the adsorption of NO and the reaction of NO with O 2 on Ag(110) . The clean silver surface shows inert to the adsorption of NO and no any signals have been monitored spectroscopically even after exposed at high temperatures. The addition of oxygen in the exposure atmo-sphere sets off a reaction of NO with O 2 and gives rise to the surface species of NO 3 and NO 2, as evidenced by the appearance of the intensity at 955 cm -1 and 1 040 cm -1 in the responsive Raman spectra. Upon heating the surface to 620 K, the adsorbed nitric oxides decompose accompanying with the evolution of NO into gas phase. The oxygen atom released from the decomposition remains on the surface as a new adsorbed oxygen species, which shows similar spectroscopic character as that of the weakly bound oxygen species (α state) formed after exposed silver to oxygen alone at low temperature, but a quite distinct thermostability. The formation of such stable oxygen species, desorbing above 800 K, explains the block effect of oxygen in the catalytic decomposition of NO over bulk silver catalyst at low temperature.
