Abstract:The load-carrying capacity, friction reduction and antiwear properties of two benzotriazole derivatives containing the R2NC(=S)S- group, added in liquid paraffin under boundary lubrication conditions were evaluated using a Seta-Shell Four-ball lubrication machine and an optimal SRV tester. Their anticorrosive and antioxidative properties, and thermal stabilities were also examined. The results when compared with those of zinc butyloctyldithiophosphate (ZDDP) show that the two novel compounds possess an excellent load-carrying capacity similar to ZDDP and better antiwear and antioxidative properties than ZDDP. Besides that, they have good anticorrosive properties and high thermal stabilities. The rubbed surfaces were investigated using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Auger electron spectroscopy and electron probe microanalysis analytical tools. The extreme-pressure, antiwear and antioxidative mechanisms were discussed.

Abstract:Two ash-less and phosphorous-free nitrogen-containing heterocyclic anti-wear additives (N-di-isooctyl-2benzothiazolesulfenamide, DIMB and (2-sulfurone-benzothiazole)-3-methyl-isooctyI thiobydroxy acetate, MBES) were synthesized. Their anti-wear and friction-reduction performances as lubricating oil additives in group In base oil were evaluated using SRV high temperature friction and wear tester. The chemistry of their tribofilms was analyzed with X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES), and atomic force microscopy (AFM) was then used to examine the general morphology of the reaction films. The results showed that the two nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compounds possess rather good anti-wear properties, but no ftiction-reducing performance. According to the XANES analytic results, the tribofilms generated from the additive MBES were mainly composed of FeSO4, whereas the films generated from the additive DIMB mainly contained FeS2. The AFM images revealed that in comparison with the wom surfaces from zinc dialkyldithiophosphate (ZDDP), the worn surfaces from the additives DIMB and MBES, respectively, presented large and deep grooves.

Abstract:PurposeThe paper's aim is to study tribological performances of two 2‐mercaptobenzothiazole derivatives which are ashless and lacking in phosphorous as lubricating oil additives in HVIW H150 base oils.Design/methodology/approachThe two 2‐mercaptobenzothiazole derivatives were synthesized; their tribological performances were evaluated with a four‐ball machine, and the worn surface was analyzed with a X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).FindingsThe two compounds possess good anti‐wear properties and excellent load‐carrying capacity. According to the XPS results, the additive reacted with counter‐face metal and generated a sulphur‐containing inorganic film consisting of FeS, FeS2 and FeSO4, and a complex N‐containing resin polymer film.Research limitations/implicationsTheir antioxidant properties are not estimated, and their anti‐wear action mechanism need to be further explored.Practical implicationsTwo useful ashless AW lubricating oil additives were synthesized, and may be has potential as gas engine lubricating oil additives.Originality/valueThis paper provides a study of some N, S‐containing heterocyclic compounds as lubricating oil additives.

Abstract:Two lubricating oil additives,antimony N,N-dioctyl-dithiocarbamate and antimony N-butyl-N-octyl-dithiocarbamate,were synthesized, and their molecular structures were characterized by IR and NMR spectrometries.The temperature of thermal decomposition of the two additives was determined using TGA.Their tribological properties in Polyalphaolefine(PAO) were estimated on a four-ball tester.The morphologies of the worn steel balls were observed through the scanning electron microscope.The mechanism in antiwear of the two additives was investigated by means of X-ray photoelectron spectrometry.The results show that the temperature of thermal decomposition of the two additives is relatively high,their thermal stability is relatively high and both of them have good performances of extreme pressure and antiwear.It is proved by EDS that some elements such as S,Fe,Sb exist at the surface of the worn steel balls lubricated by PAO containing the two additives.It is shown by XPS that the element S exists in the forms of FeSO4 and FeS,while the element Sb is in the form of Sb2O3,and N,in the form of a complicated adsorption film.All these compose the surface film which can reduce wear under extreme pressure.

Abstract:Purpose - Pure 2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole (DMTD) disulfide dimer (DMS2) shows excellent four ball weld properties, however, the product is a solid material with relatively low initial seizure load and exhibits certain corrosion, which accelerate oxidation of the lubricant by catalytic effect on metals. The author make efforts to resolve problems said by design a novel thiadiazole complex.Design/methodology/approach - The complex of thiadiazole dimmer and polyglycol (DMS2-GL) was synthesized as ashless grease additive. The antiwear and load carrying properties of the additive and their synergistic effects was evaluated by four ball tester in four types of lubricant grease. Moreover, corrosion inhibiting properties of compositions said was investigated by copper corrosion test.Findings - The additive DMS2-GL possessed good load carrying capacity, and exhibits good synergistic antiwear and load carrying prop with rust inhibitor. In addition, dates obtained from copper corrosion test show that it does not corrode copper but coats the metal with a film, and could improve the anticorrosion of corrosive additives molybdenum dialkyldithiophosphate (MoDDP) and molybdenum dibutyldithiocarbamate (MoDTC) by forming protective films on rubbing surface, which contribute to improving corrosion inhibiting property of greases. Finally, the tribo-chemical mechanism was proposed that thiadiazole dimer and polyglycol could coordinate with each other by polydentate surface interaction, which means thiadiazole rings interact with the metal surface, polyglycol affords a bridging technology linked thiadiazole climmers so as to lighten loads and strengthen forces between thiadiazole dimmer moleculars.Originality/value - This paper provides a good ashless additive which has good antiwear, extreme pressure and corrosion inhibiting properties, and fulfils an identified resources need, which can offer practical help in industrial applications and to an individual starting out on an academic career.

Abstract:Ashless and non-phosphorus hydroxyl-containing dithiocarbamate-triazine compounds,2,4,6-tri[N,N-di-i-octyldithiocarmate-(2'-hydroxyl)-propionylthio]-1,3,5-s-triazine (LDION) were prepared and their tribological behaviour as additives in mineral oil were evaluated using a four-ball tester. Thermal degradation tests were conducted to identify their thermal stabilities using a thermo-gravimetric analyser. The worn surfaces were investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy. The results indicate that the additive LDION possesses high thermal stabilities and good load-carrying capacities. Moreover, it has good anti-wear property at all test concentration and under all test loads. The results of XPS and XANES analyses illustrate that the prepared compounds as additives in mineral oil forms a protective film containing oxidised compounds and organic nitrogen-containing compounds and inorganic sulfate on the metal surface during sliding process. Abstract:In general, the most important function of lubricants is to reduce wear, friction in moving machinery, and protect metal surfaces against oxidation. Due to stricter environmental control, it is required lubricant formulation with significantly lower or zero phosphorus content. For economical reasons, it is also preferred that the additive possesses other functional properties for improving the lubricating properties of the oil. In our study, a oil-soluble multifunctional ashless additive derivative of 2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4- thiadiazole(DMTD) was synthesized in high yields. The antiwear and extreme pressure properties of the additiver in mineral base oil were evaluated by four ball tester, the antioxidation properties in ester lubricant were evaluated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thin film oxygen uptake test(TFOUT) and oxidation-corrosion tests, In the four ball test, the additive can obviously improve the load carrying and antiwear abilities of the base oil under certain conditions, and better than zinc dialkyldithiophosphates (ZDDP), in the isothermal and temperature programmed DSC oxidation test and thin film oxygen uptake test, it can improve resistance of oil towards oxidation, and exhibits better antioxidation properties than commercial dithiocarbamate derivative or ZDDP antioxidants, in the oxidation-corrosion test, it can not only effectively reduce the increases in viscosity and acid number of ester base oil at elevated temperature, but also superiors to commercial arylamine and phenolic antioxidants in oxidation stabilities. Synthesis and Tribological Behaviour of 1,3,4-Thiadiazole Schiff Base Derivatives As Multifunctional Lubricant Additives

Abstract:Six new 1,3,4-thiadiazole Schiff base derivatives were synthesized and characterized by IR spectroscopy and H-1 NMR spectrometry, and their anti-corrosion properties and thermal stability were investigated via thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and copper strip corrosion test. The tribological behavior of the said Schiff base derivatives was evaluated on an Optimol SRV (R) 4 oscillating reciprocating friction and wear tester. The worn surfaces of the steel discs were investigated using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS). The test results indicated that these thiadiazole Schiff base derivatives possessed favourable thermal stability, corrosion inhibiting ability and the capability of improving the tribological characteristic of the base oil effectively. It is assumed that the adsorbed additives probably reacted with the steel surfaces during the friction process, resulting in the formation of a protective film composed of sulphates, sulphides and organic nitrogen compounds.

Abstract:Three kinds of triazine acyl derivatives were synthesized.The antiwear behavior of the synthetic derivatives and their mixtures with zinc dialkyldithiophosphate(ZDDP)as additives in mineral oil was evaluated using a four-ball machine.The morphology of the wear scar was observed using a scanning electron microscope(SEM).Results indicated that at a low load(392 N),the base oil containing 1.5% ZOO showed similar antiwear performance as that containing 1.5% ZDDP.However,at a higher load(≥392 N),ZOO possessed better antiwear performance than ZDDP,while ZOS and ZNION had poorer antiwear ability than ZDDP at all the tested loads.Moreover,all combinations of the synthesized additives with ZDDP showed improved antiwear performance as compared to each individual additive.

Abstract:Two kinds of ashless and phosphorous-free environmental friendly compounds,2-mercaptobenzothiazole derivatives MBTA and MBTT were synthesized,which were characterized by FT-IR and element analysis.According to the results of the four-ball tests,both antiwear additives show good antiwear properties and load-carrying capacities in rapeseed oil(RSO),and the antiwear properties of MBTA is even better than that of MBTT.They have friction-reducing behaviors under low loads.The maximum non-seizer load of RSO can be increased by 75.5% and 66.7% using additives MBTA and MBTT,respectively.According to the XPS analytic results of the steel-ball worn surfaces,the tribofilms generated from additive MBTA is mainly composed of FeS and/or FeS2.

Abstract:Three novel of 1,3,4-thiadiazole Schiff base derivatives were synthesized and characterized by IR and 1H NMR.The thermal stability of these derivatives were tested by means of the thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA), and their anti-corrosion properties in liquid paraffin base oil were investigated by copper strip corrosion tester.It was found that these thiadiazole Schiff base derivatives possessed satisfactory thermal stabilities and anti-corrosion properties.As the additive in liquid paraffin oil, the friction-reducing and anti-wear performances were evaluated on an SRV-IV oscillating reciprocating friction and wear tester.The result indicated that these synthetic additives were capable of drastically improving the friction-reducing and anti-wear properties, and the best performance was achieved when additive content increased to 0.5%.The element analysis of the worn surface were investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and the tribological mechanism was then discussed: the good tribological performance of liquid paraffin with additives was probably due to the formation of boundary lubrication films composed of Fe2O3, Fe3O4, iron sulfides, and certain organic nitrogen compounds by tribochemical reactions during the friction process.

Abstract:Two heterocyclic compounds, 1-ethylhexyl-ethyl ester-thiomethyl-2-sulphur-benzo-thiazole (referred to as MBES) and 1-(dibutylamine-sulphur-methyl)-thiomethyl-2-sulphur-benzothiazole (referred to as MBON), as lubricating oil additives, were synthesized to replace or partially replace zincdialkyldithiophosphates (ZDDP). It was found that two heterocyclic compounds added in base oil at a proper concentration showed rather good anti-wear behaviour; there was a pronounced synergism between MBES and 1.0 wt% ZDDP in terms of the anti-wear properties and load-carrying capacities, whereas there was no synergism between MBON and 1.0 wt% ZDDP. X-ray photoelectron spectroscope analytical results showed that the tribofilms generated from the base oil-1.5 wt% MBON mainly contained pyrite, sulphite, and sulphate, whereas the films from the base oil-1.5 wt% MBES only contain sulphate; for the films from the complexes of the additive with 1.0 wt% ZDDP, S-containing compounds in the films are mainly in the form of sulphate and sulphite, and there are some N-containing organic compounds adsorbed on the worn surfaces.

Abstract:Three novel imidazoline-type thiadiazole derivatives are prepared and used as antiwear and extreme-pressure additives in biodegradable lithium grease, and their tribological performances are evaluated using a four-ball tester. Tribological tests show that all derivatives are effective in reducing wear, especially at lower additive concentrations. Oleic acid-imidazoline-type thiadiazole derivative is a preferred additive to reduce wear. For the friction-reducing property of base grease, improvements after using these derivatives are not remarkable. On the other hand, these derivatives are also effective extreme-pressure additives. In order to understand the friction process further, chemical composition of tribofilms under antiwear/extreme-pressure regime is analyzed by X-ray absorption near edge structure spectroscopy, and thermal films are also considered for comparison. Thermal films formed by these imidazoline-type thiadiazole derivatives consist of adsorbed organic sulfide and ferrous sulfide. Sulfur presents several chemical valences in the antiwear regime, and tribofilms generated by stearic acid and lauric acid-imidazoline-type thiadiazole derivatives at 1.0 wt% are composed of ferrous disulfide, ferrous sulfide and ferrous sulfate. The appearance of disulfide suggests that the interfacial temperature between the upper ball and three lower balls under antiwear conditions is considerably low. Composition of extreme-pressure films generated by oleic acid and lauric acid-imidazoline-type thiadiazole derivatives is only ferrous sulfide, and the extreme-pressure film for stearic acid imidazoline-type thiadiazole derivative is a mixture of ferrous sulfide, ferrous sulfate, and adsorbed organic sulfide.

Abstract:There has been a growing concern for the use of environmentally friendly lubricants because of the worldwide interest in environmental issues. This has promoted the development of new environmentally friendly lubricants and additives. In this paper, three potential ashless additives, S-[2-(acetamido) thiazol-1-yl] dialkyl dithiocarbamate, were prepared. The tribological behavior of the synthesized compounds as additives in rapeseed oil (RO) were evaluated with a four-ball wear tester. The elemental composition and chemical nature of the antiwear film generated on steel counterfaces were investigated with electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). It was found that the synthesized compounds as additives in rapeseed oil had shown improved extreme pressure and antiwear properties and friction-reducing behavior as compared with the rapeseed oil alone. The protective film containing a reaction layer and adsorption layer was found to be formed on the wear surface. The elemental sulfur contained in the dialkyl dithiocarbamate group and thiazole group may react with counterface metal, and result in the formation of reaction films containing sulfate, organosulfur compounds and FeS2. The nitrogen element was merely adsorbed on the lubricating surface and did not react with the metal. In addition, the polymerized ester produced by rapeseed oil also played an important role in the adsorption film.

Abstract:Purpose - To study some tribochemical properties of tetrazole derivatives, n-hexadecanyl (1H-tetrazol-1-yl) acetate (HTA) and 1-phenyl-5-(octylthio)tetrazole (PCT) as lubricating oil additives in hydrogenised oil, and estimate the action mechanism.Design/methodology/approach - The two tetrazole compounds were synthesized, and added them in hydrogenised oil with different concentrations. Their anti-wear properties were evaluated with a four-ball machine, the wear scar was analyzed with a X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).Findings - The novel compounds possess good anti-wear, friction reduction properties and good load-carrying capacity. According to the XPS results, the novel compounds were migrated onto the surface of the steel balls and adsorbed on the surface. The two additive compounds, themselves, and their decomposers contributed to the corresponding tribological performances. With S element contained in the compound PCT, the influence on the load-carrying capacity of the base oil was enhanced. It may be due to the formation of S2- and SO42- compounds on the worn surface which could form a protective film.Research limitations/implications - Their antioxidant, anticorrosion, anti-wear properties are not estimated.Practical implications - Two useful EP and AW lubricating oil additives were synthesized, and maybe it is the potential industrial applied lubricating oil additives.Originality/value - This paper provided a study way of some N-containing heterocyclic compounds as lubricating oil additives.

Abstract:Two ashless and non-phosphorus hydroxyl-containing dithiocarbamate-triazine compounds, 2,4,6-tri[N,N-di-n-butyldithiocarmate-(2′-hydroxyl)-propionylthio]-1,3,5-s-triazine (LDBA) and 2,4,6-tri[N,N-di-i-octyldithiocarmate-(2′-hydroxyl)-propionylthio]-1,3,5-s-triazine (LDIOA), were prepared and their tribological behaviors as additives in rapeseed oil (RSO) were evaluated using a four-ball tester. Thermal degradation tests were conducted to identify their thermal stabilities using a thermo-gravimetric analyzer. The worn surfaces of the steel balls were investigated by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results indicate that the additives possess high thermal stabilities and good load-carrying capacities. Moreover, they both have good anti-wear and friction-reducing property at relatively high concentration (>1.5wt%) and under all test loads. The results of XPS analyses illustrate that the prepared compounds as additives in RSO forms a protective film containing inorganic sulfide, sulfate, oxidized compounds and organic nitrogen-containing compounds on the metal surface during the sliding process.
