Abstract:Airbags have been widely used in passenger vehicles to protect occupants from vehicle collisions. Although the airbag is an advanced protective device, it has been continuously improved to minimise occupant injuries for true safety. The current study developed a new sandwiched tube-type airbag (STAB) consisting of two flat layers and a middle layer with a tube-type structure. The objective of designing this new type of airbag is to enhance occupant safety in passenger car collisions by reducing injury risks for small and out-of-position (OOP) occupants. A prototype of the new airbag was built using a volume of 40 L. The performance of the prototype airbag was investigated using static deployment test and sled crash test with a Hybrid III dummy. A finite element model of the new airbag was developed and validated using results from the airbag deployment test and sled crash test. A parametric study and STAB optimisation were subsequently conducted to study the influence of eight design variables on STAB. The design of experiment (DOE) was used to generate the virtual test matrixes; results were analysed to determine significant design variables and STAB's protective efficiency. A series of virtual tests involving the OOP occupant and STAB airbag as well as the normal driver-side airbag (DAB) were conducted with a 5th percentile female dummy and a 50th percentile male dummy. Results indicated that the STAB airbag needs less gas than the DAB to get the same load and displacement curve. In the deployment process, STAB's leading velocity was lower than that of DAB's. Thus, STAB could decrease the risk of OOP occupant's injury and provide better protection performance.

Abstract:The airbag technology has been widely used in industry production as a protection technology.And its computer simulation is an important useful method in the design and validation process.This paper researches on a large cubage airbag used in an industry production,and by the computer simulaton,gets an airbag model whose calculation result accords with the experiment result well.By the analysis of the simulation result,this paper discusses the influences of three parameters of the model to the airbag characteristic,and concludes a useful method of the airbag design.

Cost-Benefit Analysis to Assess the Effectiveness of an External Airbag and Autonomous Emergency Braking System

Abstract:One of the recent developments in safety systems is an external airbag installed on the front bumper of a vehicle and autonomous emergency braking system. In this paper, we propose a framework for a cost-benefit analysis of the external airbag and autonomous emergency braking system in order to validate its commercialization. Road traffic crash data obtained from the National Automotive Sampling System/Crashworthiness Data System (NASS/CDS) was used, and three different crash types related to frontal damage in vehicles were extracted to estimate the safety performance of an external airbag. An ordinal logistic regression model was applied to estimate the safety performance in terms of the reduced maximum abbreviated injury scale (MAIS) based on a reduction in the total delta-v following the installation of an external airbag. Given the estimated safety performance of the external airbag, a cost-benefit analysis is conducted. According to the results, the external airbag system saves 46% of occupants with MAIS 3+ injuries and prevents 40% of fatalities. Moreover, the benefit/cost ratios of the external airbag system range from 0.496 to 0.509 depending on the scenario. Lastly, sensitivity analyses were performed with important parameters, including the initial and maximum market penetration ratio and the price of the system. This study aims to evaluate the technology of safety devices by analyzing the effectiveness of a new safety device using real-world vehicle accident data. We also statistically estimated its effectiveness and analyzed its societal value. We expect that our comprehensive findings will be helpful in evaluating the effectiveness of safety devices.

Abstract:Optimizing airbag folding patterns can improve occupant protection efficiency and reduce injuries of out-of-position passengers caused by airbag.On the basis of current research,an optimum criteria on development performance of airbag was proposed.Through static deployment tests and 3D video motion analysis,the image processing technology were performed to analyze the dynamic perfor-mances of a new type of airbag under different folding patterns.Base on those data,new patterns were developed and the test result proves airbag folding in this pattern has good deployment performance.

Abstract:The airbag's flaw will not only cause it to lose protection crew member's function,but also will cause crew member's extra damage in the traffic accident.For absence of the airbag flaw investigation technology,the standard and recall supervisory system in china,we investigated and studied the present situation of airbag recall in the domestic and foreign.The airbag flaw's characteristic of the U.S.Defective Product Management Center to recall was analyzed.Conforming to our country national condition,the airbag flaw determination general procedure was established,and the flaw determination software was compiled.The results may promote the airbag profession standardization and the standardized advancement,thus with every effort protect the legitimate rights and interests of consumers.

Abstract:Investments of automotive safety technology have substantially been increased due to heavy casualty in traffic accident in China. It thereby accelerates the improvement of RD capability of safety technology and commercialization process. The fact that the domestic-brand vehicles have achieved C-NCAP 5-star rating marks a great leap forward in terms of passive safety technology in China. The research of passive safety is further performed with regard to pedestrian protection, rear-row passenger’s protection, whiplash protection and cyclist protection. Meanwhile, the research and development of active safety, pre-crash safety and intelligent automotive network system have become the focuses. The perfect combination of high level active and passive safety technology regarding to passenger, vehicle and environment will promote the accomplishment of safety philosophy of zero crash and zero casualty. The subject establishment of state-level development and industrialization, and regulations constitution and perfection thereof will become the driving force of rapid growth of auto safety technology.

Abstract:Airbag is technology in the automotive sector which was created to save the passenger from fatal risks in vehicle accident. Airbag are placed at the point of risk of passenger collision so that the impact load generated from this impact will be muted by airbags of the passenger. This research is designed to be able to perform rescue function not only for passenger, but also for vehicle itself. Because the placement of the airbags was placed on the bumper of vehicle, this part is installed with a high sensitivity sensor to be able to provide information to the system. So the airbags can expand before a impact occurs and the vehicle and its contents will be protected. ECU will send a signal to the squib inflator or also known as an igniter which is an electrical device in the form of a thin bridge cable, igniter will generate heat to burn propylene airbags which will produce nitrogen gas.

Abstract:Automotive airbags protect passengers in accidents. The ignition circuit is an important part of the airbag control system to prevent faulty ignitions but to ignite when needed. The analyses of ignition circuit include the selection of the proper ignition power, the design of the backup power, the detection of circuit and airbag failure, the suppression of disturbances by rough roads, and the elimination of the power on statical interference. Some methods were given to improve the reliability and suppress disturbances in the airbag control system. The methods are proven to be effective in tests.

Abstract:Despite significant advancements in vehicle safety technology, motor vehicle crashes continue to pose a significant risk to child passengers. This paper addresses the persisting issue of inadequate child safety measures in vehicles by proposing innovative solutions to mitigate injuries and save lives. Drawing upon original research and a comprehensive review of existing literature and safety data, this study explores the implementation of adaptive airbag systems tailored to the unique needs of child passengers. The research methodology involves developing a video-based camera that accurately identifies infants, toddlers, and children within vehicles. Experiments and testing regimens determine optimal airbag deployment angles and forces based on passenger height and weight. Additionally, the paper discusses the integration of a system to adjust airbag deployment angles in real time, ensuring maximum protection for child occupants. Consumer insights are essential, prompting a survey to gauge public opinion on current child safety measures and proposed solutions. The survey results highlight widespread concern among respondents regarding the effectiveness of existing safety precautions, particularly airbag systems. Ultimately, this paper presents a holistic approach to enhancing child safety in vehicles, combining original research efforts with insights from existing literature to propose practical solutions. By implementing adaptive airbag systems tailored to the unique needs of child passengers, this study aims to significantly reduce the incidence of injuries and fatalities in motor vehicle crashes, safeguarding the well-being of young passengers for generations to come.
Mechanism Analysis of Airbag Explosion Suppression and Energy Absorption in a Flexible Explosion Suppression System

Abstract:The unfixed flame propagation velocity of a gas explosion and the fixed response time of explosion suppression devices are the important reasons for the poor protective effect of active explosion suppression. A flexible explosion suppression method based on buffer energy absorption is detailed in this study. The explosion suppression system consists of an explosive characteristic monitoring system, an explosion suppression agent system, and an explosion suppression airbag. An empty pipe experiment and an explosion suppression experiment with a flexible-airbag gas-explosion suppression device were conducted in a 20.5 m-long pipe with an inner diameter of 180 mm. The flame propagation velocity and maximum overpressure values were compared between the two groups of experiments. The experimental results show that the flame wave propagation can be completely suppressed by the explosion suppression device under certain pressure. The occurrence time of maximum overpressure at each pressure measuring point is also analyzed. P3 is generally later than P4, which verifies the existence of energy absorption and explosion suppression effect of airbag. Finally, the energy absorption effect of the airbag is analyzed theoretically. The shock wave overpressure calculated in the sealing limit state of the airbag is 0.3432 MPa, and the maximum error is 7.8%, which provides reliable guidance and prediction for the experimental process in the future.

Abstract:It is a hot topic in airbag system study that how to improve occupant protection efficiency and reduce injuries caused by airbags.The finite element models of airbags with five different typical folding patterns were developed by the software of LS-DYNA and validated with static deployment test results.The correlation between airbag folding patterns and the injury of out-of-position(OOP)occupants is studied through simuluatin tests under two typical driver positons.The results indicate that the deployment performance of airbags with rolling foding patterns and tuck folding patterns is better than those with direct folding patterns.The conculsion can guide the optimization design of airbag folding pattens.

Abstract:The airbag is a widely accepted device for occupant protection in the automotive industry. As the injuries induced by airbag deployment have become a critical issue, revisions to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 208 were required to create advanced airbags that can protect occupants of varying statures. In this paper, we developed a new low-risk deployment passenger airbag by adding the Passenger Protection Wrap (PPW). The PPW reduces the cushion impact force to the occupant in order to ensure pressure dispersion. A series of tests were conducted by using FMVSS 208 test procedures to demonstrate the proposed system. It was found that the system not only satisfied the injury criteria of FMVSS 208 but was also effective for protecting passengers of all sizes (male, small female, 3-year-old, 6-year-old).

Abstract:Road accidents represent the dark side of road traffic, their consequences leading to material damage and often to vehicle occupant fatalities. Passive safety systems offer a high level of protection to vehicle occupants; yet, depending on a number of constructive factors and not only, these systems can not always ensure a high survival rate. The costs of road traffic accidents are to be borne by the whole society, with high amounts of money required. In this paper we analyze how the collision is felt in various points on the vehicle, at a given time and how this may affect the proper functioning of the passive safety systems, especially the airbag system.

Abstract:Airbags are expected to reduce vehicle occupant injuries, primarily by preventing head and chest contacts with the steering wheel and instrument panel. To date, however, there has been little evidence of airbag effectiveness in terms of field accident investigations. This paper presents some preliminary results from an ongoing case-control study of crashed vehicles equipped with Australian airbag technology (supplementary airbags in combination with seatbelt webbing clamps). Vehicles were inspected and occupants interviewed according to the National Accident Sampling System (NASS). Data were available for 140 belted drivers involved in frontal crashes (delta-V between 21 and 60 km/h), including 71 airbag and 69 control cases. Analyses revealed significant reductions in the cost of injury and a strong indication of a redaction in overall injury severity among the airbag cases. Indications of airbag benefits were also found in terms of a redaction in the probability of sustaining a moderate and severe injury. Some evidence was found for an increase in minor injuries among the airbag cases. As expected, airbag technology seems to be reducing head, face and chest injuries, particularly those of at least a moderate severity. These results are compared with recent overseas findings.

Abstract:The invention relates to a safety airbag, which comprises a first airbag cover, a second airbag cover and a gas generator, wherein the volume of the first airbag cover is smaller than the volume of the second airbag cover, the first airbag cover is accommodated in the second airbag cover, a plurality of first row of exhaust holes are formed in the first airbag cover, the first airbag cover is communicated with the second airbag cover through the first row of exhaust holes, and the gas generator is communicated with the gas filling end of the first airbag cover. The safety airbag provided by the invention has the advantages that when a car generates collision, the first airbag cover can be fast and completely unfolded through the gas generator, and when OOP (out of position) passengers are in contact with the safety airbag covers, the first airbag cover can provide effective protection for the OOP passengers.

Abstract:A multi-airbag group-by-group unfolding type side turnover protecting device with external airbags for a passenger car relates to the technical field of passenger car safety, and comprises a controller (1), a tilt angle sensor (2), car body collision pre-contact distance sensors and external safety air bags, wherein the car body collision pre-contact distance sensors are arranged pairwise according to the length of a car body, the controller (1) and the tilt angle sensor (2) are fixed nearby the gravity center of the complete car, the pre-contact distance sensors and the airbags are installedon two sides of a roof and a waist rail of the passenger car, the controller (1) is in parallel connection with each pre-contact distance sensor, and the tilt angle sensor (2) is used for acquiring car body tilt angle signals and inputting the signals into the controller (1). When a tilt angle reaches a preset value of the controller (1), the controller (1) triggers the pre-contact distance sensors to work, and the pre-contact distance sensors are used for inputting acquired distance signals into the controller (1), and when a certain pre-contact distance meets a preset condition, the controller (1) is used for controlling the corresponding safety airbags to unfold. The protecting device is capable of realizing structural light-weight design.

Abstract:Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part D: Journal of Automobile Engineering, Ahead of Print. In autonomous vehicle, since that occupants no long need to operate the vehicle, they will have time to relax and entertain or communicate with other people. In order to improve the collision safety of the occupants who move freely and have different seat orientation angles in autonomous vehicle, a protection strategy based on the cooperative control of the rotating seat and belt airbag to avoid occupant injuries is proposed: in the pre-crash phase, the occupant on a rotated seat is repositioned into a close-to-standard frontal facing position, while the belt airbag deploys; in the crash phase, the fully deployed belt airbag cushions and absorbs occupant impact with the support of the occupant's legs to reduce injury. Firstly, the current prediction time for unavoidable collisions in self-driving cars is about 350 ms, therefore, the airbag can be inflated by enlarging the inflation duration to reduce its impact during deployment. Due to the fixed installation position of the dashboard airbag, which cannot accompany the deficiency of seat movement, a new type of belt airbag is designed; Then, the simulation models of ±45° and ±90° seat orientation were established to study the injury mechanism and kinematic response of occupants with different seat orientations in frontal crashes; Finally, the simulation models of active rotating seat with belt airbag were established to study the kinematic response and injury risk of occupants with rotating seat and belt airbag protection strategy. The belt airbag with a capacity of 65 L developed in this paper could effectively protect occupants in a frontal collision at an inflation time of 200 ms and a total inflation mass of 31.4 g; The occupant safety strategy based on rotating seat and belt airbag can effectively reduce the risk of collision injury of occupants with different seat orientations in autonomous vehicle.
