Abstract:This paper proposes a novel unknown input observer (UIO) design method, which incorporates the set-theoretic notions into the design of UIOs. In this way, we can take advantage of both UIOs and set-theoretic methods in fault detection (FD). The main advantage of UIOs is that they can be insensitive to unknown inputs affecting a system. However, a critical limitation is the satisfaction of the UIO design conditions for a monitored system. The core idea of this paper is that, even though we cannot design a UIO insensitive to all unknown inputs, we can at least design a UIO insensitive to as many unknown inputs as possible. In this case, although the effect of all unknown inputs on FD cannot be completely removed, we can at least partially remove the effect of unknown inputs. Furthermore, for the remaining unknown inputs whose effect cannot be removed, the set-theoretic methods can be employed to specify them and obtain FD robustness against their effect. At the end of this paper, the effectiveness of the proposed method is illustrated by a numerical example.

Abstract:For the inherent nonlinearities and unknown external disturbances of the ship rudder servo system (RSS), a robust observer based fault detection scheme was proposed, which can detect the faults of the RSS efficiently without any knowledge of the disturbances. The design steps and the ex‐isting conditions for the observer were given after system modeling, and the linear matrix inequality method was used to solve the design problem. A NI‐PXI based test rig was built for online RSS fault detection. The observer performance in normal state, robustness and fault detection capability were all verified. In order to avoid false alarms during transient response, an adaptive threshold was used for fault decision. Experimental results show that the proposed fault detection scheme is efficient and can be used for online fault detection, and is better than some existing fault detection methods for sim‐ilar systems.

Abstract:This paper proposes an actuator fault diagnosis method for a class of discrete-time linear systems subject to parametric uncertainties, unknown but bounded disturbance and noise. The actuator faults of the systems are taken as unknown inputs, and the proposed unknown input observer has a new structure that provides more robust and more design degrees of freedom. A zonotope-based method is used to estimate the threshold of residual generated by the unknown input observer. Based on the proposed method, a fault detection and isolation strategy using a set of unknown input set-membership observers is presented. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by numerical simulation of a flight control system.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the fault estimation problem for switched systems with partially unknown nonlinear dynamics, actuator and sensor faults, simultaneously. The fault estimation observers are constructed, in which the observer dimension is not fixed and can be selected in a certain range. Both the disturbance decoupling and disturbance attenuation are considered, where the unknown nonlinear dynamics can be decoupled and the effect of modeling error and measurement disturbance is attenuated. Based on the average dwell time and the piecewise Lyapunov function, the observer parameter matrices can be calculated by solving LMIs and matrix equations. Finally, two examples are listed to verify the proposed fault estimation approach.

Abstract:This paper focuses on comparing fault detection (FD) performance of two robust FD approaches, namely the set-theoretic unknown input observer-based approach and the interval observer-based approach. The former is implemented using the set theory and the unknown input observer (UIO), where the set theory and the UIO are used to decouple the effect of unknown inputs in passive and active ways, respectively. The latter is based on the set theory and the Luenberger observer, which completely relies on the set-based passive decoupling to obtain FD robustness. The former is a new method recently proposed by the authors, while the latter is a well-known robust FD method. The objective of this paper is to analyze these two FD approaches in a systematic way and to compare their FD sensitivity based on mathematical analysis. Eventually, an explicit criterion used to choose which method is better for FD of a system is given by using invariant sets. At the end of this paper, an example is used to illustrate the obtained results.

Abstract:Sensors are a key component in industrial automation systems. A fault or malfunction in sensors may degrade control system performance. An engineering system model is usually disturbed by input uncertainties, which brings a challenge for monitoring, diagnosis, and control. In this study, a novel estimation technique, called adaptive unknown-input observer, is proposed to simultaneously reconstruct sensor faults as well as system states. Specifically, the unknown input observer is used to decouple partial disturbances, the un-decoupled disturbances are attenuated by the optimization using linear matrix inequalities, and the adaptive technique is explored to track sensor faults. As a result, a robust reconstruction of the sensor fault as well as system states is then achieved. Furthermore, the proposed robustly adaptive fault reconstruction technique is extended to Lipschitz nonlinear systems subjected to sensor faults and unknown input uncertainties. Finally, the effectiveness of the algorithms is demonstrated using an aircraft system model and robotic arm and comparison studies.

Abstract:This study evaluates the robust fault estimation problem of systems with actuator and sensor faults though the simultaneous use of unknown input disturbances and measurement noise. Specifically, an augmented descriptor system is preliminarily developed by creating an augmented state consisting of system states and sensor faults. Next, a novel fast adaptive unknown input observer (FAUIO) is proposed for the system to enhance its fault estimation performance. The existence condition of the novel FAUIO is then introduced for linear time-invariant systems with unknown input disturbances. Furthermore, the proposed FAUIO is extended to a class of Lipschitz nonlinear systems with unknown input disturbances and measurement noise to investigate the robust fault estimation problem. Accordingly, an H<sub>∞</sub> performance index is employed to attenuate the influence of disturbances on fault estimation. Moreover, the linear matrix inequality (LMI) technique is applied to solve the designed FAUIO. Finally, the effectiveness of the developed FAUIO is validated via the simulation of two examples.

Abstract:This article is concerned with the problem of intermittent fault detection for a class of nonlinear systems through observer-based methods. Different from the permanent fault detection, this article devotes to detecting both the appearance and disappearance of intermittent faults, which has strict requirements on the convergence property of the observation error. A predefined-time observer is designed for sector-bounded nonlinear systems to guarantee that the observation error reaches stability within a preset time. Using the implicit Lyapunov function method and the homogeneity theory, some linear matrix equations and inequalities are derived to solve the observer gain such that the observation error system is input-to-state stable. Then, the residual is generated and evaluated to detect the fault. Finally, the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed approach are verified by an experiment on the prototype of rotary steerable drilling tool system.

Abstract:In this article, a set of fully distributed unknown input observers (UIOs) are designed for continuous-time linear interconnected systems. As a fully distributed scheme, each subsystem uses only local and interconnected information with neighbors to design the UIO, and then their data to monitor the local state. By unknown input decomposition, the UIOs can asymptotically estimate the state of interconnected systems in the presence of actuator faults. The presented scheme is scalable, allowing plug and play (PnP) operations. Then, a Luenberger observer is constructed for each subsystem, which interconnected with UIOs for the other subsystems is utilized to construct the fault detector. The residual generated by the fault detector is sensitive to the local fault while decoupled with faults in the other subsystems such that distributed fault detection for interconnected systems with more than one faulty subsystems is feasible. Finally, simulations are conducted for fault detection on power networks to show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the robust fault detection problem of nonlinear systems. Based on the Lyapunov method, a robust fault detection approach for a general class of nonlinear systems is proposed. A nonlinear observer is first provided, and a sufficient condition is given to make the observer locally stable. Then, a practical algorithm is presented to facilitate the realization of the proposed observer for robust fault detection. Finally, a numerical example is provided to show the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Abstract:A new parametric approach for robust fault detection in descriptor linear multivariable systems with unknown disturbances is proposed. The residual is generated using a fullorder generalized state observer. Based on a recently proposed parametric eigenstructure assignment approach, parameterizations of the observer gain and the eigenvectors of the observer system are presented. By combining the parameterizations of the observer eigenvectors and an established condition for disturbance decoupling in descriptor linear systems, the effect of the disturbance to the residual signal is decoupled. A simple algorithm is presented. An example shows the effect of the proposed approach.

Abstract:The model uncertaint of hydraulic systems is a key issue in observer-based fault diagnosis. In this research, for diagnosing pressure sensor faults in hydraulic systems, we present the application of adaptive robust observers design. For reducing model uncertainty and increasing the feasibility of the fault diagnosis scheme, this paper uses a robust filter and controlled parameter adaption to deal with model uncertainty. Then, according to the fault system model, the fault magnitude of the pressure sensor fault is estimated and the residual variance can be generated for diagnosing the sensor fault. By experiments, the fault diagnosis scheme is proven efficient, which is based on adaptive robust observers. Then, the fault magnitude can be estimated.

Abstract:For systems with unknown inputs or uncertainties, the interval observer requires more relaxed design conditions than the general observer. This paper presents a new design method of interval observer for a class of nonlinear time-varying systems with external disturbances and measurement noise based on the coordinate transformation method. Among them, the disturbance and noise only limit the boundedness. The interval observer design is carried out by time-invariant coordinate transformation when the gain matrix cannot be directly derived. The proposed method is applied to fault detection and the effect of fault detection is improved by optimizing the interval width. The interval observer is validated through simulation examples.

Abstract:The concept of faulty systems state observer (FSSO) is presented for the first time. The difference between FSSO and the traditional observer is analysed, and two possible structures for FSSO are pointed out. A new robust fault diagnosis method based on FSSO for a class of nonlinear systems with bounded uncertainties satisfying Lipschitz condition is proposed and its robustness and sensitivity are also analysed. This method can detect and isolate faults. It can also estimate the characteristics of the fault signal which varies with time. The result of the simulation indicates its validity.

Abstract:Unknown input observer is one of the most famous strategies for robust fault diagnosis of linear systems, but studies on nonlinear cases are not sufficient. On the other hand, the extended Kalman filter (EKF) is wellknown in nonlinear estimation, and its convergence as an observer of nonlinear deterministic system has been derived recently. By combining the EKF and the unknown input Kalman filter, we propose a robust nonlinear estimator called unknown input EKF (UIEKF) and prove its convergence as a nonlinear robust observer under some mild conditions using linear matrix inequality (LMI). Simulation of a three-tank system "DTS200", a benchmark in process control, demonstrates the robustness and effectiveness of the UIEKF as an observer for nonlinear systems with uncertainty, and the fault diagnosis based on the UIEKF is found successful.

Abstract:In this study, a novel fuzzy logic-aided event-driven-observer-based fault-tolerant control approach is investigated for a class of nonlinear systems with time-varying actuator faults and unmatched disturbances. The considered actuator faults and disturbances are unknown. To achieve the control purpose, first, the fuzzy logic theory is used to approximate the nonlinear unknown functions. Then, a novel fuzzy-aided nonlinear observer is constructed to estimate the unmeasured states, actuator faults, and unmatched disturbances. Based on the observer outputs, a novel fault-tolerant controller is designed by utilizing the backstepping technique. Furthermore, an event-triggered control scheme is presented in the control channel to reduce the transmitted data, while the fault tolerance and disturbance rejection abilities can also be guaranteed. The Zeno phenomenon avoidance performance is verified, and finally, the application to a robotic tracking control system results shows the effectiveness of the presented control scheme.

Abstract:This paper recommends an unknown input observer (UIO) for uncertain nonlinear time-delay dynamics that enables online fault estimation. The main novelty of this paper is designing UIO to fault estimation for nonlinear systems that include time-varying delays in states and time-varying uncertainties in all matrices of the system. The other advantage of the proposed method is that both abrupt and incipient faults are considered. Furthermore, the state and output disturbances, as well as actuator and sensor faults, are considered. The Lyapunov–Krasovskii concept is used to guarantee the stability of the augmented closed-loop system. Calculating observer gains and stabilisation of estimation error dynamics are accomplished by utilising a new linear matrix inequality (LMI). Finally, an uncertain continuous-stirred tank reactor (CSTR) with a time-varying delay is used to evaluate the performance of the suggested technique.

Abstract:This paper examines the design of unknown input observers from a frequency domain point view and shows that a UIO design can be formulated as a perfect H2 or Hinfin disturbance rejection problem that many tools in robust control field can be applied. In particular, it is shown that a more general non-perfect disturbance rejection or approximate UIO problem may be considered and potentially interesting open problems are outlined. The paper also establishes the connection between residual error based on the UIO fault detection filter and residual error based on a standard observer. It is shown that a UIO based filter may be useless for fault detection. Hence it is critical to find the suitable UIO filters from the family of all possible UIO filters to fit the specific fault detection needs

Abstract:In this paper, a novel nonlinear unknown input observer is proposed in order to fault estimation for nonlinear uncertain systems with time delays. The time delay is considered a constant and known parameter in the states. The disturbances are investigated in the states and outputs and also, and sensor and actuator faults are considered. The stability of the closed‐loop system is guaranteed by Lyapunov–Krasovskii theory and some feasible Linear matrix inequalities (LMI). By the estimation of the faults, the features are detected such as shape, size occurrence time etc. The time delay is considered a constant and known parameter in the states.
