Abstract:Feedforward neural networks have been extensively applied to modeling and control of nonlinear systems. It has been known that using only one NN model to approximate accurately a highly nonlinear plant within a large domain is very difficult, and the controller based on the model often fail when the operating point changes greatly. This paper proposes a nonlinear direct adaptive control strategy based on radial basis function (RBF) neural networks and multi-models. An online adaptive algorithm and several effective model switching methods are given. The adaptive control strategy based on a single NN model has been proved to be robust, reliable, efficient and simple. The strategy based on multi-model proposed in this work can trace an expected output accurately without oscillation within a large domain. The control strategy is also applied to a pH continuously stirred tank reactor and the simulation results demonstrate the advantages

Abstract:Compared with other feed-forward neural networks, radial basis function neural networks (RBFNN) have many advantages which make them more suitable for nonlinear system modeling, and they have recently received considerable attention. In this paper, a RBFNN is employed to model strongly nonlinear systems. First, the problems of nonlinear system modeling are analyzed, and then the structure of the RBFNN as well as the training algorithm are improved to solve these problems. Finally, an industrial high-purity distillation column, which is a strongly nonlinear system, is successfully modeled with the improved RBFNN. Owing to the complexities of a nonlinear system, it is necessary to use a real-time model correction method to modify the parameters of the RBFNN model in real time. One efficient method is proposed in this paper. The idea is to employ the Givens transformation to modify the parameters of the RBFNN-based model.

Abstract:Based on the operators of DNA computing, a multi-objective non-dominated sorted genetic algorithm(DNA-NSGA-Ⅱ)was proposed to optimize the radial basis function (RBF) network.Both the structure complexity and the approximation performance were optimized.Once a group of Pareto optimal solutions were derived, the appropriate RBF network could be chosen in terms of the sum of absolute values of the testing errors.Simulation results of a continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) and pH neutralization process showed that the proposed method is an efficient black box dynamic modeling approach.

Abstract:This paper proposes a nonlinear direct adaptive controller, based on radial basis function (RBF) networks. It is robust, reliable, efficient and simple. Compared with controllers based on BP networks, the proposed algorithm converges much more quickly without the problem of local minima. Simulation examples demonstrate the simplicity of the design procedure and the good characteristics of the control strategy. Moreover they illustrate that the controller possesses strong disturbance rejection and overcomes the drawback in outerpolation (accurate prediction outside the training domain) of neural network models.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel incremental radial basis function (RBF) neural network is proposed for nonlinear systems modeling. The hidden layer is constructed dynamically on the basis of the neuronal activity (NA), which is measured by the local field potential (LFP) and the average firing rate (AFR), with the goal of enhancing the structural compactness. Simultaneously, a modified second-order algorithm is utilized to train the neuronal activity-based RBF (NARBF) neural network, which can decrease the convergence time and improve the generalization performance. Then, three benchmark nonlinear system modeling simulations are employed to evaluate the proposed NARBF neural network, indicating that the proposed neural network can obtain good generalization performance with a compact structure after fast training. Finally, the NARBF neural network is applied to wastewater treatment process modeling, which demonstrates that the proposed algorithm can predict the key water quality variable precisely.

Abstract:An Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is an adequate tool for modeling nonlinear systems and can be applied straightforward in the predictive functional control. New structure of ANN multi-step prediction that is different from cascade or parallel is presented, at the same time, the nonlinear predictive functional control using this ANN model has been developed in this paper. The useful of this control strategy is evaluated by applying it to a Continuous Stirred Tank Reactor (CSTR). The simulation results indicate that it is more effective than PID control.

Abstract:An improved radial basis function neural network (IRBFNN) with unsymmetrical Gaussian function is presented to simplify the structure of RBFNN. The improved resource allocating network (IRAN) is developed to design IRBFNN online for nonlinear dynamic system modeling, integrating the typical resource allocating network (RAN) with merging method for similar hidden units, deleting strategy for redundant hidden units, and LMS learning algorithm with moving data window for output link weights of network. The proposed approach can effectively improve the precision and generalization of IRBFNN. The combination of IRBFNN and IRAN is competent for the online modeling of nonlinear dynamic systems. The feasibility and effectiveness of the modeling method have been demonstrated by simulations.

Abstract:In this paper, an efficient self-organizing recurrent radial basis function neural network (RRBFNN), is developed for nonlinear system modeling. In RRBFNN, a two-steps learning approach is introduced during the learning process. In the first step, the objective is to find the optimal set of parameters using an improved Levenberg-Marquardt (LM) algorithm. In the second step, an efficient information-oriented algorithm (IOA), without any thresholds, is developed to optimize the structure of RRBFNN. The hidden neurons in this IOA-based RRBFNN (IOA-RRBFNN) are generated or pruned automatically to reduce the computational complexity and improve the generalization power. Meanwhile, a theoretical analysis on the learning convergence of IOA-RRBFNN is given in details. To demonstrate the merits of IOA-RRBFNN for modeling nonlinear systems, several benchmark problems and a real world application are present with comparisons against other existing methods. Some promising results are reported in this study, indicating that the proposed IOA-RRBFNN performs prediction accuracy in the case of fast learning speed and compact structure. Abstract:Many systems in reality exhibit nonlinear characteristics and in most cases they cannot be treated satisfactorily using linearized approaches over the full operating range. In this paper, an approximate modeling approach is introduced to overcome the mismatch between the linear/linearized model and the real nonlinear plant by treating the nonlinear system as a linear uncertain system that consists of a linear part and an uncertain part, for which a radial basis function neural network is employed to approximate, and a nonlinear control scheme is proposed using a linear feedback PD (proportional-derivative) controller to work concurrently with a nonlinear radical basis function neural network controller (RBFNNC). The PD controller, designed for the linear part, is used to improve the transient response while maintaining the stability of the system, and the RBFNNC, designed from fuzzy if-then rules with functional equivalence to a fuzzy inference system, is employed to compensate for the system nonlinearity/uncertainty and reduce the steady state error. The proposed modeling approach or control scheme can incorporate prior knowledge in its framework and provide a more transparent insight than the neural black-box approach. The simulation results reveal that the proposed modeling and control scheme for nonlinear systems is effective.

Abstract:To model nonlinear systems, we propose a nonlinear modeling method based on an improved deep learning algorithm. First, we design a learning model of a deep belief network based on the Gaussian radial basis function. Second, we adjust the weight, center, and width of the radial basis functions by a contrastive divergence algorithm and optimize the weights of the deep belief network using a back-propagation algorithm. Finally, we apply the improved deep learning algorithm to model nonlinear systems. The experimental results verify the effectiveness and feasibility of the algorithm.

Abstract:In this paper, a means, which is based on Radial Basis Function Neural Network (RBFNN), is firstly presented to make the model for nonlinear systems. As an application example of this means, the high power DC graphitizing furnace is analyzed, and the RBF model for graphitizing furnace is constructed from experiments or simulations. The procedures for training the model are described along with discussions on error. Secondly, the open loop dynamic model is discussed in detail. The dynamic model of graphitizing furnace is accomplished in this paper. All the simulated results show that the discussed approaches are effective.

Abstract:The model of speed control system plays an important role in power system stability studies, the non-linear properties prevent us from getting accurate mechanism model. In this paper, the radial basis function neural network with self-structuring and fast convergence is used in the modeling of steam turbine speed control system in the modeling process, also, this paper presents a method which combines particle swarm optimization algorithm and least-squares algorithm for the neural network's training, it has the property of high accuracy and fast convergence, after training, the proposed model and related training algorithm are verified by the test data of one power plant, it has proved that the neural network can be used in the modeling of the speed control system for the power system stability studies.

The unsafe upper steady states can be prevented with the optimizer for Constrained General Model Controller (CGMC).Process simulator package is used to generate a wide range of operation data and the dynamic simulator is built as the real plant. The effectiveness is illustrated with a Continuous Stirred Tank Reactor (CSTR) and OPC tools are developed for on-line data acquisition and computation.

Abstract:A novel method of nonlinear system modeling using radial basis function neural network based on improved differential evolution algorithm is proposed. Differential evolution algorithm is presented to in order to improve modeling capability. Local operator and optimization selection strategy is presented to improve the searching speed and the local searching capability of genetic algorithm. According to the characteristics of radial basis function neural network and differential evolution algorithm, radial basis function neural network and differential evolution algorithm are associated to improve modeling precision. The simulation results show the effectiveness of this method.

Abstract:Many processes in reality exhibit nonlinear characteristics and in most of cases they cannot be treated satisfactorily using linearized approach in a large operating range. The approach can incorporate prior knowledge in its framework and provide a more transparent insight than the neural "black box" approach. The simulation results reveal that the proposed modeling approach to nonlinear systems is effective.

Abstract:A radial basis function neural network (RBFNN), with a strong function approximation ability, was proven to be an effective tool for nonlinear process modeling. However, in many instances, the sample set is limited and the model evaluation error is fixed, which makes it very difficult to construct an optimal network structure to ensure the generalization ability of the established nonlinear process model. To solve this problem, a novel RBFNN with a high generation performance (RBFNN-GP), is proposed in this paper. The proposed RBFNN-GP consists of three contributions. First, a local generalization error bound, introducing the sample mean and variance, is developed to acquire a small error bound to reduce the range of error. Second, the self-organizing structure method, based on a generalization error bound and network sensitivity, is established to obtain a suitable number of neurons to improve the generalization ability. Third, the convergence of this proposed RBFNN-GP is proved theoretically in the case of structure fixation and structure adjustment. Finally, the performance of the proposed RBFNN-GP is compared with some popular algorithms, using two numerical simulations and a practical application. The comparison results verified the effectiveness of RBFNN-GP.

Abstract:Based on the study of radial basis function (RBF) neural network training algorithm, a new RBF neural network training algorithm was introduced by combining genetic algorithm of chromosomes with changeable length and least-square method. It is able to determine the structure and parameters of network. The new training algorithm was used to model heat loading forecasting for co-generation power plants, compares with BP neural network and RBF neural network based on a training algorithm of automatic increase in hidden nodes. Simulation results show that the proposed method is valid.

Abstract:Abstract Random vibrations occur in many engineering systems including buildings subject to earthquake excitation, vehicles traveling on a rough road and off-shore platform in random waves. Analysis of random vibrations for linear systems has been well studied. For nonlinear systems, particularly for multi-degree-of-freedom systems, however, there are still many challenges including analyzing the probability distribution of transient responses of the system. Monte Carlo simulation was considered the only viable method for this task. In this paper, We propose a method to construct semi-analytical transient solutions of the probability distribution of transient responses of nonlinear systems by using the radial basis function neural networks. The activation functions consist of normalized Gaussian probability density functions. Two examples are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed solution method. The transient probability distributions and response moments of these examples are presented, which have not been reported in the literature before.

Abstract:The article is devoted to approximate methods for solving differential equations. An approach based on neural networks with radial basis functions is presented. Neural network training algorithms adapted to radial basis function networks are proposed, in particular adaptations of the Nesterov and Levenberg-Marquardt algorithms. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithms is demonstrated for solving model problems of function approximation, differential equations, direct and inverse boundary value problems, and modeling processes in piecewise homogeneous media.
