Abstract:THE loess-paleosol sequences from China potentially provide one of the best terrestrial records of past climates. Studies have shown that magnetic susceptibility in the sequences represents a proxy climate index closely related to changes of summer monsoon intensity[ls2]. Some interpretative models have been advanced to account for these magnetic variations, although unanimity of opinion has not been reachedL3]. Recent geochemical studies of chemical weathering on the Loess Plateau by the present authors show that some trace element ratios of the loess to paleosol can reflect the regional climate. Abstract:Rb, Sr, and magnetic susceptibility have been measured in the last interglacial–glacial loess profiles at Luochuan and Huanxian, central China. A high degree of similarity between the parameters in both profiles suggests that variations of Rb/Sr ratios in the sequence can be regarded as an indicator of East Asian summer monsoon strength. Matching the Rb/Sr record with the SPECMAP δ18O curve suggests that the Rb/Sr ratio responds sensitively to changes of the East Asian monsoon induced by global ice-volume variation.

Abstract:The concentrations of Rb and Sr, and magnetic susceptibility in loess and paleosol samples from the Luochum profile have been measured. The loess units deposited in different geological periods display a very similar pattern of Rb and Sr distribution while paleosol units exhibit a dramatic increase in the Rb/Sr ratio, ranging from 20% to 120% in increase amplitude. Owing to different geochemical behavior of the two elements, Rb appears to be immobile while Sr appears to be mobile in the processes of weathering and pedogenesis. So variations of the Rb/Sr ratio in the loess-paleosol sequences could reflect intensities of weathering and pedogenesis, thus recording the relative wind strength of the East Asian summer monsoon circulation. This could be supported by the high degree of cornlation between the Rb/Sr ratio and the magnetic susceptibility. A continuous record of the Rb/Sr ratio in the Luochuan profile over the last 800 ka bears a striking resemblance to the δ18 O curve of the deep sea sediments and is in accordance with the SPECMAP chronology. Such similarity between the terrestrial and the deep sea records suggests that variability in global ice volume is a primary dynamic factor controlling long-term changes of the East Asian summer monsoon intensity.

Abstract:To find a new index of winter monsoon without effects of chemical weathering and pedogenesis is an important task in loess research. Chemical analysis of five grain size fractions (i.e. >32 μm, 32–20 μm, 20–8 μm, 8–2 μm and <2 μm) show that Zr is enriched in coarser grain size, while Rb is concentrated in finer fractions. An excellent correlation occurs between Zr/Rb ratios and mean grain size in loess units (L1LL1 and L1LL2) from Huanxian and Xifeng sections, reflecting that Zr/Rb ratios increase when grain size is coarser. Due to immobility of the two elements during the postdepositional process, Zr/Rb ratios can eliminate the effect of weathering and pedogenesis and serve as an excellent proxy on winter monsoon variation. The Zr/Rb ratio curves of the Huanxian, Xifeng and Luochuan sections during the last 130000 years show that the winter monsoon strength was very weak during MIS 3, which corresponded to the intensity during MIS 5.
Variations in 87sr/86sr Ratios of Calcites in Chinese Loess: a Proxy for Chemical Weathering Associated with the East Asian Summer Monsoon

Abstract:87Sr/86Sr ratios of loess–paleosol calcites of Luochuan in China over the past 130ka display a regular change with increasing trend of 87Sr/86Sr ratios in the following order: loess calcite→weakly pedogenetic, paleosol calcite→paleosol calcite→pure secondary calcite. The observed variations in the 87Sr/86Sr record of loess–paleosol calcites correlate closely with the records of the magnetic susceptibility, coarse-grain fraction content in the same profile [An et al., Chin. Sci. Bull. 39 (1994) 182–184] and the SPECMAP stacked δ18O record of global ice volume [Imbrie et al., in Berger et al. (Eds.), Milankovitch and Climate, Part I, Reidel, Boston, 1984, pp. 269–305]. Strata from the last glacial consist mostly of loesses and weakly developed paleosols and have lower 87Sr/86Sr ratios, averaging 0.71079. Paleosols which developed during the last interglacial have higher 87Sr/86Sr ratios, averaging 0.71131. The four periods (ca. 125–110, 98–90, 80–75 and 9–5ka B.P.) of increased summer monsoonal rainfall coincide with the four peaks in 87Sr/86Sr values. A series of 87Sr/86Sr high frequency, high amplitude fluctuations is superimposed on the last glacial–interglacial cycle over the past 130ka, occurring on millennium timescales with an average time span of about 3ka during the last glacial. The fluctuations of the 87Sr/86Sr ratios of the Luochuan loess–paleosol calcites lie in the range 0.71036–0.71176 for the past 130ka. The study shows that the Sr isotopic system in loess–paleosol calcites may therefore be an excellent proxy of chemical weathering on continents associated with the East Asian summer monsoon.

Abstract:143Nd/144Nd and 87Sr/86Sr ratios of the acid-insoluble residues of the red clay and overlying loess–paleosols from the Lingtai profile of the Loess Plateau, China, were investigated. The results show that variations of the 87Sr/86Sr ratios of the Lingtai profile can be divided into two stages. From ∼7 Ma B.P. to 2.5 Ma B.P., the acid-insoluble residues in the Red Clay (RC) Formation, are characterized by higher 87Sr/86Sr ratios with an average of 0.7230. From 2.5 Ma B.P. to the present, the acid-insoluble residues in the Wuchen Loess (WL4-WS1), Lishi Loess (L15-S1), Malan Loess (L1) and Holocene Loess (S0) have relatively lower 87Sr/86Sr ratios and display an overall descending trend from 0.7223 at ∼2.5 Ma B.P. to 0.7182 at the present. Among three possible interpretations for the variations of 87Sr/86Sr ratios of acid-insoluble residues of the loess (provenance change, chemical weathering change, or grain-size distribution change), only grain-size distribution change provides a satisfactory interpretation. This implies that the East Asian winter monsoon strength was weak and relatively stable from ∼7 Ma B.P. to ∼2.5 Ma B.P., but became continuously enhanced from ∼2.5 Ma B.P. to the present. All the red clay and the overlying loess-paleosols in the Lingtai profile have generally identical εNd (0), implying that the source regions of these Eolian deposits of the Chinese Loess Plateau may be relatively stable and has not changed since 7 Ma B.P.
Zr/Rb Ratio in the Chinese Loess Sequences and Its Implication for Changes in the East Asian Winter Monsoon Strength

Abstract:The long-term dust accumulation sequences on the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP) provide a valuable opportunity to study the evolution of East Asian winter monsoon strength. Grain size of bulk samples of loess deposits, though widely used, is a modified measure of the strength of winter monsoon wind due to modification by post-depositional weathering and pedogenesis. This study proposes a new and reliable geochemical climate proxy that records the variability of the East Asian winter monsoon on the CLP. Six loess–paleosol sections on the Plateau were selected for measuring concentrations of the trace elements Zr and Rb as well as grain size. Variations of the Zr/Rb ratio in all the sections encompassing the last 130ka display a generally similar pattern to that of mean grain size of bulk samples (MGSB). Though a positive correlation exists between the Zr/Rb ratio and MGSB, the correlation coefficient decreases in southern and eastern sections where intense pedogenesis occurred in the relatively warm and humid climates. Long-term Zr/Rb variation in the Lingtai section exhibits amplitudes and frequencies similar to those in MGSB and the mean grain size of quartz particles (MGSQ, accepted as a more reliable proxy than MGSB) in the upper loess–paleosol sequence over the past 2.6Ma. However, for the underlying Red Clay formation, in the interval from about 7–2.6Ma B.P., the MGSB record is relatively stable, whereas both the Zr/Rb ratio and MGSQ show distinct variability and display amplitudes similar to those observed in the overlying loess–paleosol sequence. These results demonstrate that the Zr/Rb ratio reflects original eolian grain size and may serve as a reliable index of the strength of East Asian winter monsoon winds.
Variation of Summer Precipitation Δ18o on the Chinese Loess Plateau Since the Last Interglacial

Abstract:ABSTRACTOrbital‐scale East Asian Summer Monsoon (EASM) variations inferred from loess deposits in northern China and speleothems from southern China display different dominant periods, complicating our understanding of monsoon response to insolation and ice‐volume forcings. Here we integrate a new microcodium δ18O record from a high‐resolution last interglacial loess profile with previously published data and provide a composite microcodium δ18O record on the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP) since the last interglacial. The composite microcodium δ18O record displays distinct precessional cycles, consistent with speleothem δ18O records, but with different amplitude contrast (particularly during the peak interglacials). We propose that both loess and speleothem δ18O records exhibit covariations at precessional timescale oscillations. The discrepancy between loess and speleothem from southern China can be attributed to the influences of other processes besides summer precipitation on the proxies. A slight difference in amplitude between microcodium and speleothem δ18O records implies that the EASM is also influenced by inland surface boundary conditions, which has important impacts on the occurrence of EASM precipitation. Therefore, microcodium δ18O from the Chinese loess–paleosol sequences can be regarded as a representative proxy of EASM precipitation in northern China and then a reliable proxy reflecting the variation of EASM intensity.
East Asian summer monsoon intensity inferred from iron oxide mineralogy in the Xiashu Loess in southern China

Abstract:The Xiashu Loess, in comparison to the well-studied loess sequences in the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP), provides a good opportunity for studying East Asian monsoon variations from a southern China perspective. Here we present a study of the iron oxide mineralogy of the Xiashu Loess using integrated geochemical and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) measurements as well as magnetic data. Our results show that the free iron oxide (Fed) to total iron (Fet) ratio (Fed/Fet), hematite (Hm) to goethite (Gt) ratio (Hm/Gt) and saturation isothermal remanent magnetization (SIRM) to magnetic susceptibility (χ) ratio (SIRM/χ) all indicate particularly strong summer monsoons during the formation of paleosols PS5 and PS4 (equivalent to Marine Isotope Stage 13 and 11, respectively). However, magnetic susceptibility and Fed/Fet are not consistently reliable indicators of summer monsoon intensity for the whole section. Our results indicate that a multi-proxy approach can give a more reliable summer monsoon intensity reconstruction. The summer monsoon shows a cooling trend and a declining of precipitation from 0.5 to ∼0.3Ma, after which it becomes warmer and wetter towards the top of paleosol PS1 (equivalent to MIS 5). However, PS1 was formed under a relatively cooler temperature and wetter soil conditions in comparison to PS5 and PS4. Such supra-orbital variations in the East Asian summer monsoon superimposed on the effects of glacial–interglacial cycles in southern China are also reflected in the 0.4–0.5Ma cycle of marine carbon isotopes in the global ocean, possibly indicating a strong link between terrestrial weathering and the global carbon cycle.

Abstract:Chinese eolian deposits have been investigated intensively to reconstruct East Asian monsoon changes at tectonic to millennial timescales. However, high-resolution elemental proxies sensitive to rapid monsoon changes remains sparse. Here we present multiple elemental ratios of the Linxia loess sequence generated by scanning and conventional X-ray fluorescence (XRF) to assess East Asian monsoon variability at glacial-interglacial to sub-orbital timescales. The results show that 11 elements (Al, Si, K, Ca, Ti, Mn, Fe, Rb, Sr, Zr and Ba) can be reliably measured by XRF scanning of loess cores, albeit with relatively lower precision and increased noise levels (due to variable water content and matrix effects) when compared to XRF scanning of dry and homogenized powder samples. Seven elements (Ca, Fe, Ti, Mn, Zr, Rb and Sr), measured by XRF scanning of the core face and powder samples show high correlation (R-2 > 0.7, n = 100) with those measured by conventional XRF methods, and thus can be considered as robust indicators for chemical weathering and grain-size sorting. We employ element ratios of Ca/Ti and Rb/Sr to reflect precipitation-induced weathering intensity, and the Zr/Rb ratio and mean grain size to infer the sorting effects related to winter-monsoon winds. These element ratios exhibit significant glacialinterglacial fluctuations, similar to records of magnetic susceptibility and mean grain size. Precessional- to millennial-scale monsoon changes are also persistent in our high-resolution elemental proxies, consistent with those in Gulang loess elemental ratios and Hulu/Sanbao speleothem d18O records. Our results suggest that high resolution XRF scanning elemental ratios of Chinese loess have great potential for evaluating co-evolution of orbital- and millennial-scale monsoon variations.

Abstract:[1] Most of our knowledge concerning the evolution of the East Asian monsoon (EAM) comes from the Chinese loess-paleosol sequence. Variations in the EAM, as recorded in loess, are highly correlated to the marine delta O-18 record and show a strong 100 kyr cyclicity during the past 800 kyr. This conclusion is based on both weathering and pedogenesis intensity changes as well as grain size variation in loess-paleosol sequences which usually serves as a proxy for winter monsoon variation. However, grain size distributions are subject to modification by pedogenic processes. In this paper we used the Zr/Rb ratio from the Lingtai section on the Loess Plateau in central China to trace variations in the East Asian winter monsoon for the past 1.8 Myr. Long-term Zr/Rb variations in the Lingtai section exhibit a similar amplitude and frequency to those of mean grain size in bulk samples over the past 1.8 Myr. Comparing the Zr/Rb record and mean grain size record between L1 and L9 shows that a good linear relationship exists in the glacial age loess samples, whereas paleosol samples usually deviate from the linear relationship because of intense pedogenesis during the relatively warm and humid interglacial intervals. Our results indicate that the Zr/Rb ratio reflects the original eolian grain size and may serve as a proxy for the strength of the East Asian winter monsoon. In the Lingtai section over the past 1.8 Myr, the Zr/Rb ratio record displays a very strong 41 kyr obliquity periodicity from 1.8 - 1.2 Myr B. P., implying that variations of the winter monsoon during this interval are controlled by high-latitude climate. However, during the past 0.8 Myr the Zr/Rb ratio exhibits a stronger precession cycle influence, suggesting a possible low-latitude control on the East Asian monsoon regime during this interval.

The Variation of Summer Monsoon Precipitation in Central China Since the Last Deglaciation

Abstract:Two stalagmites (C996-1 and C996-2) collected from the Jiuxian Cave in the Shaanxi Province in central China have been studied with U-series dating and stable isotope analysis. Thirty-eight 230Th dating results showed that the stalagmite C996-1 was continuously deposited through the last 8.5ka BP (thousand years before present, present=1950AD), and C996-2 was deposited through the last 19ka BP excluding two growth hiatuses between 8.3 and 5.7ka BP, and 15.4 and 11.9ka BP. With a relatively stable boundary condition, we interpret the δ18O of speleothem calcite as most indicative of the amount of summer monsoon precipitation, although temperature and other factors might have some minor impact. The δ18O records show notable changes within the last glacial maximum (LGM), resembling other East Asian monsoon records such as those from the Hulu and Sanbao Caves, suggesting that significant monsoonal climate changes occurred in eastern Asia as far north as the Qinling Mountains during the LGM interval. A comparison of our records to precisely dated contemporaneous speleothem records from other caves shows that the increasing trend of δ18O during the Holocene commenced as early as ∼7.5ka BP in the low-latitude monsoonal area, i.e. the Hoti Cave, while at higher latitudes this shift occurred later, such as ∼7.0ka BP in the Dongge Cave, ∼5.3ka BP in the Heshang Cave, ∼4.7ka BP in the Sanbao Cave and ∼4.5ka BP in the Jiuxian Cave. These results imply an asynchronous change of the summer monsoon precipitation occurred in East Asia during the Holocene. The asynchrony may be related to the responses of a coupled tropical and subtropical monsoon system to changes of the insolation and the differences in thermal forcing, which result from the complex geographical configuration. The variation of sea surface temperature (SST) in the western tropical Pacific may also have important impacts on the summer monsoon precipitation changes in central and northern China because it affects the Northwestern Pacific Subtropical High, a monsoon-front regulator. More robust tests are needed to confirm this phenomenon and to evaluate the contribution of different factors in detail.
Variations in 87sr/86sr of the Huanxian Profile, Loess Plateau of China from 40 Ka B.P. to 10 Ka B.P. and Heinrich Events

Abstract:87Sr/86Sr ratios of acid-washed residues of the loess and paleosols since 40 ka B.P. from the Huanxian profile of the Loess Plateau, China, were determined. The investigation shows that 87Sr/86Sr ratios of the residues from the loess levels are generally lower than those from the paleosol levels. It is thought that the paleosol contain a higher proportion of the fine grain size parts (<2 um) than the loess. A correlation occurs among the variations in 87Sr/86Sr ratios, Zr/Rb ratios and mean grain size and, collectively they, imply that the East Asian winter monsoon was weak about from 40 ka B.P. to 30 ka, but it became stronger from about 30 ka B.P. to 10 ka B.P. Heinrich events of the North Atlantic region and Greenland correspond well to low 87Sr/86Sr ratios of residues of the Huanxian profile, which demonstrates that Heinrich events also influnced the east Asian region, including the Loess Plateau of China, and 87Sr/86Sr ratios of residues of the Loess Plateau can record information on high-frequency oscillations of the east Asian winter monsoon strength.
A Preliminary Study on Characteristics of Warm and Humid Climate of Loess of Jinding Section During MIS3

Abstract:By the systematic measurement and analysis of magnetic susceptibility,Rb/Sr ratio,total Fe content(TFe),chemical index of alteration(CIA)and OSL dating data of the Jinding malan loess in the north-central Loess Plateau,and the paleoclimate change of the Jinding section during Marine Isotope Stage(MIS)3are discussed.Results indicate that the general characteristics of paleoclimate change of the Jinding section during MIS3 are relatively warm and humid with the cold and warm climatefluctuation,which could include 5stages,51.6-44.9ka B.P.,a relatively week warm and humid climate interval;42.0-39.9ka B.P.,a warm and humid climate interval;37.4-27.8ka B.P.,a relatively strong warm and humid climate interval;44.9-42.0ka B.P.and 39.9-37.4ka B.P.,dry and cold climate intervals.The formation mechanism of the climate change during MIS3 in Jinding suggests that the increasing solar radiation of the northern hemisphere leads to the warming effect more directly,but the coupling mechanism by a high latitude forcing and tropic driving factors remains to be further research.
Sr-Nd Isotope Geochemistry of Eolian Dust of the Arid-Semiarid Areas in China: Implications for Loess Provenance and Monsoon Evolution

Abstract:Minerals and rocks have distinct 87 Sr/ 86 Sr and 143 Nd/ 144 Nd ratios, depending on their geological origin and ages, and these isotope ratios are less altered than elemental composition during transport in the atmosphere or after deposition as sediments, thus stable isotopes of Sr and Nd have great potential as tracers for provenance and transport of materials. During the hypergene process, Sr isotope ratios of sediments are controlled by their parent rocks, particle sizes and chemical weathering. In general, the higher the Sr isotope ratios of parent rocks, and/or the more the fine-grained fractions, and/or the stronger the chemical weathering, thus the higher the Sr isotope ratios of sediments. On the contrary, there are lower Sr isotope ratios of sediments. Nd isotope ratios of sediments, independent of their particle sizes and chemical weathering, are only associated with parent rocks. For the provenance of the Chinese Loess Plateau, different reseachers drew discordant and even contradictory conclusions by using the method of Sr-Nd isotopic tracing. From the previous Nd isotope data, it is considered that the Tarim Basin, deserts in the central and west parts of Inner Mongolia and the Tibetan Plateau are the main sources of the Chinese Loess Plateau, and are also manufacturers for eolian dust of the Far East regions, together with the Chinese Loess Plateau. Sr isotope ratios of eolian dust are solely affected by wind sorting and weathering-pedogenesis due to its homogeneous composition in the Chinese Loess Plateau. Wind sorting is related to the East Asian winter monsoon but weathering-pedogenesis is mainly associated with the East Asian summer monsoon. Studies on Sr isotopic compositions of the loess-paleosol sequence suggest that 87 Sr/ 86 Sr ratios in acid-soluble materials are an index for chemical weathering intensity of the Chinese Loess Plateau, indicating the East Asian summer monsoon variations, whereas 87 Sr/ 86 Sr ratios in acid-insoluble materials are significantly controlled by particle sizes, and can be used as a proxy indicator reflecting the East Asian winter monsoon variations. Variations of 87 Sr/ 86 Sr ratios in acid-insoluble materials in the past 2.6Ma further demonstrate that the East Asian winter monsoon gradually strengthened since the beginning of the Quaternary period. This result agrees with the prior conclusion that climate gradually cooled since the onset of the Quaternary Ice Age.

Abstract:Holocene climatic and environmental changes on the northeastern Tibetan Plateau (TP) have been widely discussed based on the climatic records from sedimentary cores. However, differences in the reconstructed climatic history from various studies in this region still exist, probably due to influence of climatic proxies from multiple factors and the chronological uncertainties in lacustrine sediments. Here we present records of terrestrial plant δ13C, soil color and total organic carbon content over the past 8400years from a well-dated meadow section on the northeastern TP. The terrestrial plant δ13C value serves as a good summer precipitation/moisture indicator in the studied region. Soil color property and TOC content are also able to disentangle the moisture evolution history. All the data show much wet climates at 8400–7400calyr BP, dry climates at 7400–6000calyr BP and then wet conditions with fluctuation at 6000–3200calyr BP. Late Holocene moisture appears to be comparable with moist conditions from 6000 to 3200calyr BP. By further comparing the climatic variations in the Lake Qinghai area with records of the reconstructed summer temperature and the Asian Monsoon precipitation, we believe that the pattern of moisture/precipitation evolution in the Lake Qinghai area was not completely consistent with regions around Lake Qinghai, probably due to complicated interaction between the East Asian Summer Monsoon and the Indian Summer Monsoon.

Abstract:Major and trace element analyses of the Luochuan loess-paleosol sequence in China were performed in order to understand the cheniical weathering processes occurring on the I.oess Plateau during the last 600 ka. Results reveal that most elements in the loess remain immobile durlng chemical weathering. The typical stable elements are Al, K, Ti, Rb and REE, while the main mobile elements are Ca, Sr, P, Mg and Na. 120ess and paleosol experience the incipient stage of chemical weathering characterized by acid leaching and carbonate dissolution. Alteration of silicates in the sequence seems to be limited. Features of less chemical weathering of the loess and paleosol could he indicators for the dry-cold clinlate dominated on the Loess Plateau during the Quaternary.
