Abstract:Five novel complexes with two pyridine substituted benzotriazole ligands, 1-(2-pyridyl)benzotriazole (L1) and 1-(4-pyridyl)benzotriazole (L2), [Zn(L-1)(2)Cl-2](1), [{Zn(L-1)(2)Cl-2} (C)(L1)2](2), [Zn(L-2)(2)Cl-2](3), [{Zn(L2)(H2O)(3)(mu(2)-SO4)}center dot H2O] (4), and [{Cd(L2)(H2O)(3)(mu(2)-SO4)}center dot H2O](5) were synthesized. The details of the structures were characterized by X-ray single crystal analysis, revealing that these complexes were assembled together via supramolecular interaction, such as, hydrogen bonding and pi-pi interactions. Abstract:Using five Schiff base ligands (E)-N-(pyridine-2-yl) (CH═NPhR) (where R = 4–CH3, L1; 2,6-(CH3)2, L2; 2,4,6-(CH3)3, L3; 2,6-(C2H5)2, L4; 2,6-(i-C3H7)2, L5), nine Zn(II)/Cd(II) complexes, namely, Zn1–Zn3, Cd1, Cd2, Cd3a, Cd3b, Cd4, and Cd5, have been successfully synthesized. The structures of the Zn(II)/Cd(II) complexes have been established by single crystal X-ray diffraction and further physically characterized by 1H NMR, FT–IR, and elemental analysis. The crystal structures of these complexes indicate that the structures of ligand and anions can directly influence the formation of 1D → 3D supramolecular metal–organic frameworks (SMOFs) via C–H···O/C–H···Cl hydrogen bonds and π···π interactions. Upon irradiation with UV light, the nine Zn(II)/Cd(II) complexes display deep blue emissions of 401–436 nm in acetonitrile solution and light blue or bluish green emissions of 485–575 nm in the solid state, respectively. Abstract:From 1-D to 3-D zinc coordination polymers based on multifunctional flexible 4-(1,2,4-triazole-methylene)-benzonitrile (tzbt), {[Zn(tzbt)(2)(bdc)]center dot 2H(2)O}(n) (1), [Zn(tzbc)(2)](n) (2), and [Zn(bpdc)(H2O)](n) (3) (bdc = 1,4-benze-nedicarboxylic acid, tzbc = 4-(1,2,4-triazole-methylene)-benzoic acid, bpdc = 4,4'-biphenyldicarboxylic acid), were synthesized under hydrothermal conditions. The tzbt was synthesized by N-alkylation and hydrolyzed in situ to produce tzbc (in 2). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that 1 displays 1-D wave-like chains based on [Zn(bdc)](n). 2 is a chiral twofold interpenetrating 2-D architecture constructed with "V"-shaped tzbc. 3 is a 3-D chiral compound constructed from achiral H(2)bpdc with right-handed helical chains. 1-3 display stable blue-emitting luminescence with emission maxima ranging from 383 to 410 nm, depending on ligand-centered pi*->pi transitions. The effects of different polarity solvents and temperature on luminescence are discussed. TGA and VT-XPRD reveal that 2 has thermal stability to 360 degrees C.[GRAPHICS].

Abstract:Six 5-coordinate 2,6-bis(imino)pyridine metal complexes, [2,6-(ArN=CMe)2C5H3NMCl2 center dot nCH3CN] (Ar = 4-MeC6H4, M = Zn, n = 0.5, Zn1, M = Cd, n = 1, Cd1; Ar = 2,6-Et2C6H3, M = Zn, n = 0.5, Zn2, M = Cd, n = 0.5, Cd2; Ar = 2,4,6-Me3C6H2, M = Zn, n = 1, Zn3, M = Cd, n = 1, Cd3), were synthesized in acetonitrile by the reactions of the corresponding bis(imino)pyridines with ZnCl2 or CdCl2 center dot 2.5H2O, respectively. The structures of Zn1-Zn3 and Cd1-Cd3 were determined by the single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In all complexes, the ligand is tridentate with further coordination by two chlorides, resulting in a distorted trigonal bipyramid. All complexes self-assemble through hydrogen bonding interactions to form a 3-D supramolecular structure. At 298 K in dichloromethane, all complexes have blue luminescent emissions at 405-465 nm, which can be attributed to ligand-centered * transitions. The zinc and cadmium centers play a key role in enhancing fluorescent emission of the ligands.

Abstract:In the title polymeric complex, {[Zn(C8H4O4)(C3H4N2)(2)] .-3H(2)O}(n), the Zn-II atom is coordinated by two terephthalate dianions and two imidazole ligands in a distorted tetrahedral geometry. The terephthalate dianions are located on inversion centres and bridge neighbouring Zn-II atoms to form zigzag polymeric complex chains. The interplanar distance of 3.212 (17) Angstrom between parallel imidazole rings of adjacent polymeric chains suggests the existence of pi-pi stacking.

Abstract:Herein, we describe how to utilize stacking interactions to achieve selective supramolecular transformation and molecular Borromean rings (BRs). By using a dinuclear naphthalenediimide (NDI)-based Cp*Rh acceptor and linear bipyridyl ligands, organometallic rectangles featuring dynamic behavior have been constructed. Unique discrete aromatic stacking arrays were formed by inducing pyrene units as guest molecules. The topology of the BRs was realized by the use of a strategically chosen ligand which was capable of participating in D-A interactions and hydrogen bonding, as evidenced from single-crystal X-ray analysis and computational studies. These self-assembly processes underline the advantages of dynamic bonding and π-π stacking interactions, and serve to illustrate a new approach to generating structurally and topologically nontrivial supramolecular architectures.

Abstract:Four new Zn(II) and Cu(II) coordinated polymers ([ZnL2N3]ClO4 (1), [Cu2L2(CH3CN)]Cl4 (2) [CuL](NO3)2 (3), [Cu(H2O)L](SO4) (4) L=2-((4-phenyl-2H-1,2,3-triazol-2-yl)methyl) pyridine (ptmp)) have been reported. All the compounds have been characterized by IR spectrum, elemental analyses and X-ray crystallography diffraction. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses show that one-dimensional polymers are formed in these four complexes. Chain-like structures are formed in complex 1, 2 and 3, which are connected by azide, chloride and nitrate anions, respectively. In complex 4, one-dimensional left-handed polymer is formed by a μ2-SO4 bridge. The fluorescent and electrochemical properties of these four complexes were investigated. It was found that these three Cu(II) complexes displayed a quenching of fluorescence, while Zn(II) complex exhibited a clear enhanced fluorescence.

Abstract:By taking advantage of self-complementary π-π stacking and CH-π interactions, a series of discrete quadruple stacks were constructed through the self-aggregation of U-shaped dirhodium metallotweezer complexes featuring various planar polyaromatic ligands. By altering the conjugate stacking strength and bridging ligands, assemblies with a range of topologies were obtained, including a binuclear D-shaped macrocycle, tetranuclear open-ended cagelike frameworks, and duplex metallotweezer stacking structures. Furthermore, a rare stacking interaction resulting in selective C-H activation was observed during the self-assembly process of these elaborate architectures.

Abstract:In this work, we present the syntheses of four novel uranyl complexes of tri(biphenyl)amine tricarboxylate (L1) or triphenylamine tricarboxylate (L2), 1-4, with layered networks or three-dimensional (3D) frameworks through solvothermal/hydrothermal reactions. Using dimethylformamide (DMF) as the solvent, compound 1 ([NH2(CH3)(2) ][UO2(L1)]center dot 3DMF) and 3 ([NH2(CH3)(2)] [UO2 (L2)]center dot DMF) give nearly identical (6,3)-connected large-pore layered networks in spite of the slight difference in packing mode ("ABC-ABC" pattern in 1 vs "AB-AB" pattern in 3). When mixed DMF/water solvents were used, compound 2 ([NH2(CH3)(2)](2) [UO2 (L1)](2) (NO3)(2)center dot H2O) with a two-dimensional (2D) + 2D -+ three-dimensional (3D) polycatenasted framework and compound 4([NH2(CH3)(2)] [UO2(L2)]center dot 2H(2)O) with a (10,3)-connected 2-fold interpenetrating 3D framework were achieved from H(3)L1 and H(3)L2, respectively, which might be attributed to the induction of water molecules with strong hydrogen-bonding capacity. Most remarkably, the difference between a 2D + 2D -> 3D polycatenated framework and (10,3)-connected 2-fold interpenetrating 3D framework demonstrates the vital role of conformation flexibility of ligand on the final structure of uranyl compounds, which should be related to the increased amount of phenyl groups of the L1 ligand endowing its molecular skeleton more freedom and adjusting molecular conformation more easily. Their physicochemical properties were also studied by powder X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, IR spectroscopy, and luminescence spectroscopy.

Abstract:Two Zn-II complexes, [Zn-2(L)(2)(DMF)(H2O)(2)]center dot DMF (1) and [Zn(L)(DEF)]center dot DEF (2), were synthesized by solvothermal reactions using 4,4-(2,3,5,6-tetramethylbenzene1,4-diyl)dibenzoic acid (H2L) and Zn(NO3)(2)6H(2)O in different solvents of DMF, ethanol, and water for 1 and N,N-diethylformamide (DEF) for 2. The L2- with different coordination modes connect [Zn-2(COO)(2)] secondary building units (SBUs) to generate a wavy 2-D (4,4) network of 1 while in 2 there are paddlewheel [Zn-2(COO)(4)] SBUs which are connected by L2- to form a planar 2-D (4,4) network. The 2-D layered structures show different stacking arrangements and are further linked by hydrogen bonding or C-H interactions to give 3-D architectures. The different structures and stacking arrangements of 1 and 2 result from different reaction solvents. Photoluminescence properties of the complexes were investigated.

Abstract:The supramolecular structures of two metal complexes, [CuL4Cl2] (1) and [ZnL2Cl2] (2), where L=N-(2,6-dimethylphenyl)-N′-(3-pyridy1)urea, are reported. Complex 1 features infinite tapes formed by intermolecular N–H⋯Cl hydrogen bonds with an R21(6) motif, as well as a π–π stacking interaction. The solid-state structure of 2 shows a 2D network held together by two types of N–H⋯O R21(6) motifs, and there is no significant interaction between the NH groups and the metal-bound Cl− ions.

Abstract:The synthesis of three new valent-averaged tetracarboxylatodiruthenium (II,III) complexes, [Ru2(1-naphthylacetate)4(H2O)2](PF6)⋅4THF, 1⋅4THF, [Ru2(2-naphthoate)4(THF)2](PF6)⋅3THF, 2⋅3THF, and [Ru2(coumarin-3-carboxylate)4(MeOH)2](PF6)⋅MeOH⋅H2O, 3⋅MeOH⋅H2O, was accomplished using a well documented carboxylate exchange reaction. All three complexes were thoroughly characterized using infrared and UV–Vis spectroscopies, elemental analysis and X-ray diffraction. Due to the extended π-systems present, two of the complexes, 2⋅3THF and 3⋅MeOH⋅H2O, display extensive π-stacking in two dimensions, with similar interactions notably absent in 1⋅4THF due to the perpendicular orientation of the naphthyl rings. Modest H-bonding is seen in complexes 1⋅4THF and 3⋅MeOH⋅H2O. As these types of complexes are noted secondary building units (SBU’s) in the construction of metal–organic frameworks (MOF’s), the significance of these interactions in stabilizing even larger, supramolecular structures, are noted.

Abstract:Two molecular metalla-knots containing over 500 non-hydrogen atoms (especially 16 RhIII ions) and one molecular Borromean ring were obtained in high yields facilitated by multiple intermolecular interactions between their components. The syntheses rely on the strategic selection of the nonlinear dipyridyl ligand 2,7-di(pyridin-4-yl)-9H-fluorene (L1) as precursor, and the structures of the assemblies were confirmed by detailed X-ray crystallographic analysis. Subsequently, replacing L1 with the bulkier ligand 4,4'-(9,9-dimethyl-9H-fluorene-2,7-diyl)dipyridine (L2) led to the formation of three tetranuclear metallocycles in high yields on account of the weakened π-π stacking interactions between the naphthacene/anthracene and fluorene moieties, which in turn confirmed the significance of stacking interactions in the construction of the molecular 818 metalla-knots and the molecular Borromean ring.

Abstract:Supramolecular nanocages with inner cavities have attracted increasing attention due to their fascinating molecular aesthetics and vast potential applications. Even though a wide array of discrete supramolecular cages with precisely designed sizes and shapes have been established, the controlling assembly of higher-order supramolecular frameworks from discrete molecular entities still represents a formidable challenge. In this work, a novel metallo-organic cage [Zn12L4] was assembled based on triphenylene-cored hexapod terpyridine ligand. The Synchrotron X-Ray analysis revealed a pair of enantiomeric cages in the crystal with the flexible ligands twist clockwise or anticlockwise due to the steric hindrance in the structure. Interestingly, due to the strong π-π intermolecular interaction between triphenylene units, the hierarchical packing of sphere-like cage in the crystal was controlled as a sparse packing mode with huge channels around 3.6 nm. This research sheds light on the design of strong π-π interaction in supramolecular hierarchical packing and material science.

Abstract:A novel Zn(II) metal-organic framework [Zn3(tib)2(L)3] (1) was synthesized with mixed ligands of 1,3,5-tris(1-imidazolyl)benzene (tib) and 4-carboxycinnamate (L2−), exhibiting interesting two-fold interpenetration, where triple-stranded homochiral left- (L-) and right- (R-) handed helical chains were constructed by linear rigid ligand L2− and metal ions. The complex was well characterized by single crystal and powder X-ray diffractions (PXRD), infrared spectroscopy (IR), elemental analysis (EA) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). As a result, the complex shows high thermal stability and strong photoluminescent emission in the solid state at room temperature.

Abstract:According to our survey of the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD), a great number of crystal structures, in which halogen bonds and aromatic stacking interactions are present and play an important role in crystal packing, have been extracted. In this work, ab initio calculations at the MP2 level of theory were performed to investigate the mutual influence between halogen bonds and π-π stacking interactions. Different energetic effects are observed in the studied complexes where the two kinds of noncovalent interactions coexist, which can be rationalized by the direction of charge transfer for the two interactions. These effects have been analyzed in detail in terms of the structural, energetic, and charge transfer properties of the complexes. In addition, the quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) was also employed to characterize the interactions and to examine the strengthening or weakening of the interactions, depending on the variations of electron density on the bond and cage critical points. Finally, certain crystal structures retrieved from the CSD have been selected to provide experimental evidence of the combination of the two interactions.

A hybrid conjugation system integrating both TBC and TSC is rarely studied and utilized, for lack of a well-established model and difficulty of structure modification and property tuning, despite its theoretical significance and potential applications. Herein, various foldamers with a tetraphenylethene (TPE) core are employed as hybrid conjugation models to investigate structure-property correlation by introducing heterocycles of furan/thiophene into the pi-stacking TSC component. For comparison, two kinds of TPE-cored foldamers with different stacking models, a benzene-heterocycle stacking model and a benzene-benzene stacking model, are designed. Combining experimental measurements and theoretical calculations, the impact of benzene-heterocycle interaction on the hybrid conjugation natures and photophysical properties has been studied systematically. The results reveal that the benzene-heterocycle stacking model can fabricate a hybrid conjugation nature with an improved TSC component to make a more dominant contribution to the electronic transition natures than the benzene-benzene stacking model, leading to the distinguishing photophysical behavior.
