Abstract:We consider cellular automaton models for one-dimensional traffic flow problems. Starting with a microscopic relation for the updating rule describing the occupancy on each site of the road, a macroscopic evolution relation for the average speed of cars can be obtained by carrying out statistical averages. Mean field equations are obtained by considering the asymptotic form of the evolution relation. This gives the average car speed in the long time limit as a function of the car density. The evolution relation is a nonlinear mapping between the average speeds at two consecutive time steps. The mean field results can be obtained by studying the attractors of the mapping. The approach is applied to study the model recently proposed by Fukui and Ishibashi. Our calculations show that for models in which the maximum speed of each car is M, a decoupling scheme retaining correlations up to M+1 sites can be applied to the calculation of spatial correlations involving more than M+1 sites. Exact results are obtained using our approach for models without random delay. For models with random delay, results are in good agreement with simulation results.

Abstract:We propose and study new vehicular traffic flow models, incorporating the anticipation of the change in the car spacings ahead in the determination of the speed of the cars in each time step. Our models are based upon the Fukui and Ishibashi (FI) traffic flow model in which cars are allowed to move a maximum of M sites in each time step if spacing permits, together with a probabilistic delay for the cars moving at the maximum speed. By taking into account the anticipation in the change of car spacing due to movement of the car ahead, the present models give an enhanced traffic flux as compared to the FI model. The present models also give a fundamental diagram consisting of three phases - a feature consistent with traffic flow observations.

Abstract:The Biham, Middleton and Levine (BML) model is extended to describe dynamic route choices between the residence and workplace in cities. The traffic dynamic in the city with a single workplace is studied from the velocity diagram, arrival time probability distribution, destination arrival rate and convergence time. The city with double workplaces is also investigated to compare with a single workplace within the framework of four modes of urban growth. The transitional region is found in the velocity diagrams where the system undergoes a continuous transition from a moving phase to a completely jamming phase. We perform a finite-size scaling analysis of the critical density from a statistical point of view and the order parameter of this jamming transition is estimated. It is also found that statistical properties of urban traffic are greatly influenced by the urban area, workplace area and urban layout.

Abstract:We propose and study a one-dimensional traffic flow cellular automaton model of high-speed vehicles with the Fukui-Ishibashi-type acceleration for all cars, and the Nagel-Schreckenberg-type (NS) stochastic delay only for cars following the trail of the car ahead. The main difference in the delay scenario between our model and the NS model is that a car with spacing ahead longer than the velocity limit M may not be delayed in our model. By using a car-oriented mean-field theory, we analytically derive fundamental diagrams of the average speed as a function of the car density. Our theoretical results are in excellent agreement with numerical simulations.

Abstract:Exact mean field equations are derived analytically to give the fundamental diagrams, i.e., the average speed-car density relations, for the Fukui-Ishibashi one-dimensional traffic flow cellular automaton model of high speed vehicles (v(max)=M>1) with stochastic delay. Starting with the basic equation describing the time evolution of the number of empty sites in front of each car, the concepts of intercar spacings longer and shorter than M are introduced. The probabilities of having long and short spacings on the road are calculated. For high car densities (rho greater than or equal to 1/M), it is shown that intercar spacings longer than M will be shortened as the traffic flow evolves in time, and any initial configurations approach a steady state in which all the intercar spacings are of the short type. Similarly for low car densities (rho less than or equal to 1/M), it can be shown that traffic flow approaches an asymptotic steady state in which all the intercar spacings are longer than M-2. The average traffic speed is then obtained analytically as a function of car density in the asymptotic steady state. The fundamental diagram so obtained is in excellent agreement with simulation data.

Abstract:A structural model for urban arterial roads traffic flow is proposed. It describes the road traffic dynamics in a disaggregated way. The structural model's main components are as follows: (I) A link traffic model that tracks the traffic waves cyclically: Traffic waves within each cycle are captured by three characteristic points. These points are formed when different traffic waves meet. (2) A proportional line model that is used to split the overall outflow into different turning flows: The model is derived directly from the first-in-first-out (FIFO) principle. (3) A spillover component that deals with channelized section queue overflow. (4) A traffic flow performance index component that outputs macroscopic and microscopic-level indexes. These indexes include delays, stops, queue lengths, vehicle trajectories, and travel times. The first three can be used in traffic flow optimization and the last two are valuable in vehicle emissions evaluation. Simulation results show that, with increasing numerical resolution, the traditional CTM (cell transmission model) gradually converges to our model.

Abstract:We propose a novel one-dimension cellular automaton model for traffic flow in annular highway. In our model, the acceleration rule is the same of Fukui-Ishibashi's, but each vehicle may be delayed at a fixed probability. Using the so-called car-oriented mean-field theory, we analytically derive the fundamental diagrams of average speed and vehicle flux as a function of vehicle density, respectively. Our theoretical results are in excellent agreement with numerical simulations.

Abstract:This paper studies heterogeneous traffic flow that comprises two types of vehicles with different lengths at a single intersection consisting of two perpendicular one-lane roads. Based on theoretical analysis and computer simulations, we have presented the phase diagrams which consist of five regions and the topological structure of which is independent of the maximum velocity of vehicles m. The analytical formulas of the flows on the two roads have been obtained in all regions of the phase diagram, which depends on whether m is even or odd or m = 1. Abstract:We propose and study a one-dimensional traffic flow cellular automaton model of high-speed vehicles with the Fukui–Ishibashi-type (FI) acceleration rule for all cars, and the Nagel–Schreckenberg-type (NS) stochastic delay mechanism. We obtain analytically the fundamental diagrams of the average speed and vehicle flux depending on the vehicle density and stochastic delay probability. Abstract:In existing one-dimensional cellular automaton models of traffic flow, drivers’ varying behaviors are described by the deceleration probability. However, many interrelated factors contribute to the wide range of driving behaviors observed, such as behavioral habits and thought patterns of individual drivers, differences in the vehicles’ capabilities and the actual traffic environments etc.. It’s a phenomenon of great uncertainty. A new one-dimensional cellular automaton model which reproduces the uncertainty of traffic flow was described. The deceleration probability in the new model does not obey a certain random distribution but follows a broad general distribution---the Erlang distribution. In the process of the simulation, the parameter values of the Erlang distribution are also changed randomly, which describes the real traffic state more accurately. Simulations based on the new model were performed. Compared with the simulated results from other such models, the results more closely approximate real traffic flow, and the new model describes the transition process from free traffic flow to traffic jams more precisely.

Abstract:The flow-density model for discontinuous flow on urban street network under under-saturated condition was studied in this paper. According to the concept of two-fluid theory, vehicles in the traffic stream were divided into two classes: stopped (for traffic signal) and moving. The amount of stopped and moving vehicles was estimated by applying fixed number theory and traffic flow theory. Then the model described flow-density relationship was derived on the basis of the concept of space-mean density. After that, impacts of the parameters in the model on the flow-density relationship are analyzed. Finally, twelve simulated conditions were designed and five critical flow was chosen to test the estimated accuracy of the model. Results show that the maximum and average absolute value of relative deviations between exact density and the estimated one was 10.07% and 6.39% respectively.

Abstract:The asymptotic steady state of deterministic Nagel–Schreckenberg (NS) traffic flow cellular automaton (CA) model for high-velocity cars (vmax=M>1) is studied. It is shown that the fundamental diagram, i.e., the relationship between the average car velocity and the car density, of the NS model in which the velocity of a car may increase by at most one unit per time step is exactly the same as that of the Fukui–Ishibashi (FI) traffic flow CA model in which a car may increase its velocity abruptly from zero to M or the maximum velocity allowed by the empty spacings ahead in one time step. This implies that for both gradual and abrupt accelerations, the self-organization of cars gives the same asymptotic behavior in one-dimensional traffic flow models.

Abstract:Based on the NaSch cellular automaton traffic model, a modified single lane traffic model is proposed by considering the dynamic headway of successive vehicles, in which the complex characteristic and driving behavior difference between drivers are taken into account. The relationship between the flow rate and the traffic density is obtained by the numerical simulation, and it shows a two-dimensional region in the flow density plane. The three traffic phases, i.e., free flow, synchronized flow, and wide moving jams, are exhibited. It indicates that the synchronized flow and traffic jams can appear even if there is no traffic bottleneck. Besides, the high speed car-following phenomenon is indicated when the traffic is in the synchronized flow. The rate of the high speed car-following is in good agreement with the measured result.

Abstract:To describe the evolution principle of vehicle queue and reveal the formation mechanism of traffic domino effect, a model system for describing the time-space characteristics of traffic flow was developed on the basis of graph theory and matrix theory by considering the need of the actual problem.The description function signal timing, road characteristics and traffic flow characteristics were built respectively.The functi associating traffic flow with time and space were constructed.Taking an example of a plain intersectbranch vector, lane vector, lane attribute vector, existence matrix of traffic flow, flow matrix, conflict matrix of traffic flows, signal phase matrix, association matrixes of traffic flow with time and space were presented.The resulting model system can provide an effective tool for studying the domino effect of vehicle queue.

Abstract:The traditional GIS-based network data model did not adapt to the lane-based traffic analysis or simulation. A lane-based network data model is presented here. It uses lanes as the primitive topological objects of data model, of which geometry depends on itself. The basic topology of traffic network is composed of a set of lanes and nodes. The complex topologies between lanes are represented by the feature-based modeling method. Intersection in the traffic network is described as the polygon feature that has many virtual lanes in it. In the end, micro traffic flow simulation software based on GIS is developed, which adopts the lane-based network data model

[1] studied the influence of dynamical information on the stability of traffic patterns. In order to understand home possible effect of information for traffic controlling, in this paper, we propose and study the mean field theory of route choice decision traffic flow. Suppose that there are two routes A and B with the same number of cells L. Every time step a road user enters the system and has to chose one route. Two different types of vehicles are considered: “normal” ones and the so-called floating cars (FCs). When leaving the system, FCs can transmit their travel times to a board visible to every vehicle. Hence FCs generate dynamic traffic information which is the basis for the route decisions of new car entering the system. The number of FCs is represented by the variable sFC . The road users are divided as static and dynamic types. Static drivers ignore the dynamic information and select route at random. Dynamic drivers receive the information displayed on the board and always choose the route with the shortest travel time, i.e. they behave “rational”. If the travel time on both routes is the same, the route is chosen randomly. The number of dynamic drivers is represented by the variable sdyn. After the route choice both kinds of vehicles behave in the same way. All the cars move ahead along the chosen lane according to Fukui-Ishibashi (FI) traffic flow cellular automaton model [2]. Abstract:Under the condition of open boundary, it proposes a new model which is based on the improved two-way two-lane cellular automaton traffic flow model. It is a T intersection traffic flow model which consists of two independent running main roads and two cross by-roads which allow overtaking. The running forward vehicles runs by the NS rules. It simulates the fundamental traffic flow diagrams of every lanes under the condition of different injection probability to the main roads and by-roads. The simulation results show that the existence of intersection has an effect on the traffic flow of both main roads and by-roads, when the probability of the critical value is different, the influence which the main roads have to the traffic flow of the by-roads is stronger than the by-roads to the traffic flow of main road.
