Abstract:An online intelligent fault diagnosis of piezoelectric accelerometer sensors was proposed. First fault information ex-pert library was established with fault types, causes, symptoms, signal analysis features, fault diagnosis program and other infor-mation of piezoelectric sensor. Second, online data collection and signal analysis of piezoelectric sensors were done and related failure signal characteristic parameters are extracted. Thirdly,with the searching and inference mechanism of embedded expert system, the most relevant fault type and fault cause were efficiently and intelligently mapped according to the above signal charac-teristic parameters. Finally,diagnosis results of expert system were presented to the operation and maintenance engineer at field, and manual confirmation is done. This method can effectively guide the operator at field. This method has been ported to a dedi-cated fault diagnosis portable instrument, and successfully applied to commission of a nuclear plant unit.

Abstract:According to the fault types and characteristics of vacuum system of large aluminium vacuum brazing furnace,main problems of the existent fault diagnosis of vacuum system are analyzed.A fuzzy Petri net model and reasoning algorithm is represented which are based on the fault tree analysis,aiming at the uncertainty and fuzziness of fault diagnosis of the large vacuum system.And the example of fault diagnosis of diffusion pump not working the validity and efficiency of our model and algorithm are proved.

Abstract:This fault diagnostics approach is based on directly analyzing the input signals and feedback signals from the system,not depended on any hardware.The fuzzy variable of signal characteristic is obtained by fuzzy transform.The fault diagnostic information of the control system is gained by scanning out of gauge of signal characteristic quantity and calling fuzzy reasoning rule's computation.The application program has been developed in MCU (micro control unit ) for the control engineering.

Abstract:On large process plants, real-time fault diagnosis is a difficult task for the operators, expert system can be used to assist them in this work. In this paper, a method of generating knowledge base for the real-time diagnostic problem solving was presented. The knowledge base takes a hierarchical structure: the high level is a semantic network representing general knowledge of fault propagation in a plant; the low level consists of all the nodes in the network, each node may be a functional component or a typical unit operation, and some of the nodes have local analytical fault diagnostic model. The global and local diagnosability of the system can be investigated by using topological and state space approaches. It is found that diagnosability is affected by the allocation of on-line sensors, the availability of off-line symptom information provided by human operator and the way to decompose the process plant. Coordination of the later three factors will give desired diagnosability and diagnosis efficiency. Based on the multi-level knowledge base, an integrated diagnosis system, with conventional part which includes a set of diagnostic algorithms using low level information and knowledge based part which has general reasoning ability, can be built up. To demonstrate usefulness of the knowledge base, an example in a chemical reactor domian is described.

Abstract:As timely incipient fault diagnosis is the key to guarantee operation safety and suppress fault deterioration, this paper gives a review of data driven-based researches for incipient faults, which have low amplitude and may be covered by system disturbance and noise easily. Data driven-based incipient fault diagnosis can be divided into three parts, i.e., statistical analysis-based technology, signal processing-based technology, artificial intelligence-based technology. Their basic ideas, research progresses, application and limitations are discussed in detail. Furthermore, this paper not only points out the existing problems about complex systems, but also looks forward to the advance of this area by means of adding new information, mining unused implied information, using new mathematical tools. Finally, four thoughts worth exploring are proposed: diagnosis based on correlation analysis, multi-source information fusion, machine learning and time-frequency transform.

Abstract:This paper studies sensor and actuator fault diagnosis for a class of linear time-invariant (LTI) industrial control systems. Based on the dynamic model obtained using system identification, a method is proposed that can diagnose all sensor and actuator faults in the control system when they do not happen simultaneously. First, a structured residual design method is developed for coupled systems. Then model errors that occur in system identification are considered and the robust isolability is analyzed. Finally, online decision rules are given which are easy to implement. The method does not require fault data and can deal with small faults that cannot be detected by inspecting input–output signals. Verification in the high temperature gas-cooled reactor pebble-bed module (HTR-PM) simulation platform shows good potential of the method for complex industrial control systems.

Abstract:<p>Fault diagnosis plays a vital role in ensuring safe and efficient operation of modern process plants. Despite the encouraging progress in its research, developing a reliable and interpretable diagnostic system remains a challenge. There is a consensus among many researchers that an appropriate modelling, representation and use of fundamental process knowledge might be the key to addressing this problem. Over the past four decades, different techniques have been proposed for this purpose. They use process knowledge from different sources, in different forms and on different details, and are also named model-based methods in some literature. This paper first briefly introduces the problem of fault detection and diagnosis, its research status and challenges. It then gives a review of widely used model- and knowledge-based diagnostic methods, including their general ideas, properties, and important developments. Afterwards, it summarises studies that evaluate their performance in real processes in process industry, including the process types, scales, considered faults, and performance. Finally, perspectives on challenges and potential opportunities are highlighted for future work.</p>

Expert Systems with Applications

Abstract:Fault diagnosis is an indispensable technique to ensure the high-performance operation of a mechanical system during its life-cycle. Existing research works mainly limits in the diagnosis of single component or some certain components of interest. The systematic investigation of fault diagnosis for a full system is rare, making it inefficient to implement the method developed in the practice of a complete engineering system. In this paper, a system-level fault diagnosis methodology is proposed based on fault behaviour analysis, optimal sensor placement and intelligent data analytics for multiple fault detection and isolation in a complex machine system. A dynamical model of a mechanical system is firstly constructed using Bond graph, and the response characteristics of observable parameters under different faults are derived by analysing the functional relationships of system variables. A set partitioning theory-based sensor placement approach is then presented for designing a condition monitoring system with a quantity-optimal set of sensors for a desired performance of fault isolatability. Two multivariate statistic measures, i.e. Hotelling's T2 and Q are calculated from the system operation parameters as the indices to detect the potential faults. The abnormal parameters are separated by constructing a contribution plot once a fault is reported. The separated abnormal parameters are then input to a Bayesian network model, and the real root cause of the abnormity is isolated by blending the observations with expert knowledge of diagnosis. The diesel engine lubrication system, which involves three common domains: mechanical, hydraulic and thermodynamic processes, is taken as an example to show the implementation and performance of proposed approach. This approach can be used to design a system-level fault diagnosis scheme that including various tasks such as fault behaviour analysis, sensor placement, data collection, data processing, information fusion in order to achieve an accurate fault isolation ultimately.

Abstract:With the continuous increase in complexity and expense of industrial systems, there is less tolerance for performance degradation, productivity decrease, and safety hazards, which greatly necessitates to detect and identify any kinds of potential abnormalities and faults as early as possible and implement real-time fault-tolerant operation for minimizing performance degradation and avoiding dangerous situations. During the last four decades, fruitful results have been reported about fault diagnosis and fault-tolerant control methods and their applications in a variety of engineering systems. The three-part survey paper aims to give a comprehensive review of real-time fault diagnosis and fault-tolerant control, with particular attention on the results reported in the last decade. In this paper, fault diagnosis approaches and their applications are comprehensively reviewed from model- and signal-based perspectives, respectively.

Abstract:The hardware composition and software realization of the fault diagnosis of a new kind of ECU developed by the Institute of IC Engine of Shanghai Jiaotong University are introduced,including CONTINUE diagnosis, KOEO diagnosis, ER diagnosis, OUTPUT diagnosis and fuel injection balance diagnosis. The flow chart of the main program is given and the principle of the fault diagnosis as well as the output and management of fault code is presented detailedly. The test results show that the fault diagnosis can detect common faults of engines′ electronic control systems.

Abstract:Fault diagnosis(FD) is an important part of computer integrated manufacturing systems (CIMS), especially in continuous production processes. Because of the large variant product conditions, different raw materials and complex manufacture technologies, there is not a FD method alone can be universally applicable. A promising solution of this problem is to build up an intelligent platform to integrate various FD methods adaptively. In this paper, a common structure of this kind of intelligent fault diagnosis platform (IFDP) is proposed under the viewpoint of integration and intelligence. Abstract:Fuzzy cluster,grey system theory and rough set theory have been extensively used in fault diagnosis.Unfortunately,fuzzy cluster can only classify the known samples,the flexibility is very limited,it can not make decision on new samples based on the clustering result according to the known information even if the new samples belong to the correlative domain,grey system theory cannot reduce the superfluous attributes,nor can it determine the relative importance of the attributes while rough set theory cannot solve the problem with the continuous variables.These drawbacks restrain their application in fault diagnosis.These theories are combined together seamlessly and applied to fault diagnosis in the paper.During the process of fault diagnosis,the values of the attributes are discretized through fuzzy c-means cluster and cluster center is obtained,the rough set theory is used to reduce superfluous attributes and quantitatively determine the relative importance of the attributes,and then grey correlation analysis is used to calculate the grey correlation degrees of all the standard fault states with respect to the current state according to reduced attributes and their relative importance,so that the fault can be found.At the end of the paper,an example is used to demonstrate the feasibility of the method put forward in the paper.The method lays the foundation for the intelligent fault diagnosis.

Abstract:In this paper, we attempt to argue that the uncertainty coming from fuzzy information is ubiquitous in an intelligent fault diagnosis system and that fuzzy pattern recognition is an appropriate tool for the diagnosis of faults in complex devices. In the first place, the characteristics of the faults in a complex equipment system are introduced along with the fuzzy pattern recognition method and principle in intelligent fault diagnosis systems. Then, on the base of the above discussion, the paper gives an applied approach to fault diagnosis that combines the valve value rule with the maximum membership degree rule. Lastly, the practicability and validity of the method is illustrated through a practical example.

Abstract:Intelligent fault diagnostic techniques are essential to ensure the operational safety and reduce maintenance costs for complex mechanical systems, enabling intelligent operation and maintenance in the golden era of smart manufacturing. This paper presents a novel dictionary learning-based intelligent recognition (DL-IR) methodology towards machinery fault diagnostics. DL-IR learns representative dictionaries for sparse representation of vibration data under various health states and implements health state identification via a minimal sparse approximation error criterion. In detail, we apply an overlapping segmentation strategy at first to implement data augmentation for training and testing dataset preparation. Then, K-singular value decomposition is exploited to learn class-oriented dictionaries associated with distinct health states from training dataset. These learned class- oriented dictionaries can exhibit strong representation ability and share the consistent class attribute for test datasets. Finally, the health state identification for test samples is implemented via sparse approximations with respect to class-oriented dictionaries and a minimum reconstruction error criterion. Through the comprehensive experiment validation and comparison studies on public gearbox fault datasets, it is shown that our DL-IR method can obtain superior diagnostic accuracy of 99.9% and outperform three well-known sparse representation classification approaches for mechanical fault diagnostics.

Abstract:Fault diagnosis (FD) has recently received considerable attention in industry and academia. In order to make a more accurate and more complete estimation and decision for the problem, an approach that is capable of overcoming the disadvantage of single FD methodology, and eliminating the system uncertainty is presented. This paper takes flat wheel detecting system as an example. First, the proposed method diagnoses the example system with model based parameter estimation and frequency spectrum analysis respectively according to groups of data, and the estimated parameters and power spectrum are taken as the index to make decision. Then, it makes final decision according to data fusion and statistic reasoning methods. The results show that the methodology is capable of making the right diagnosis according to experimental data

Abstract:Mechanical equipments are widely used in various industrial applications. Generally working in severe conditions, mechanical equipments are subjected to progressive deterioration of their state. The mechanical failures account for more than 60% of breakdowns of the system. Therefore, the identification of impending mechanical fault is crucial to prevent the system from malfunction. This paper discusses the most recent progress in the mechanical condition monitoring and fault diagnosis. Excellent work is introduced from the aspects of the fault mechanism research, signal processing and feature extraction, fault reasoning research and equipment development. An overview of some of the existing methods for signal processing and feature extraction is presented. The advantages and disadvantages of these techniques are discussed. The review result suggests that the intelligent information fusion based mechanical fault diagnosis expert system with self-learning and self-updating abilities is the future research trend for the condition monitoring fault diagnosis of mechanical equipments.
An integrative framework for SDG based fault diagnosis

Abstract:SDG is one of the model-based methods for fault diagnosis.It has good maturity,in-depth reasoning ability and several other advantages,so that has a great significance in safety engineering of process industry.In this paper,an integrative framework for SDG based fault diagnosis is proposed to achieve the detection of fault symptoms and find out the fault origins as soon as possible in process industry.This framework,based on the theories of traditional qualitative SDG and probabilistic SDG,includes the procedure from SDG modeling to fault diagnosis inference and a series of methods including the qualitative SDG method,the hybrid method combining SDG with multivariable statistical process monitoring and the probabilistic SDG method.By introducing the multivariate statistical monitoring models,the framework can detect abnormal changes of the system sensitively and duly before the distinct symptoms emerge.And then the SDG and PSDG inference can be triggered to search the fault origins,also,the probabilities of the candidate faults can be calculated to guide the user to take measures according to the order of probabilities.By this framework,the entire theoretical framework and application system for SDG are constructed and enriched in modeling,inference and application levels.The framework is validated through a fault diagnosis case on the gas fractionation unit of a certain petrochemical company.
