Abstract:Background The convectional strain-based algorithm has been widely utilized in clinical practice. It can only provide the information of relative information of tissue stiffness. However, the exact information of tissue stiffness should be valuable for clinical diagnosis and treatment. Methods In this study we propose a reconstruction strategy to recover the mechanical properties of the tissue. After the discrepancies between the biomechanical model and data are modeled as the process noise, and the biomechanical model constraint is transformed into a state space representation the reconstruction of elasticity can be accomplished through one filtering identification process, which is to recursively estimate the material properties and kinematic functions from ultrasound data according to the minimum mean square error (MMSE) criteria. In the implementation of this model-based algorithm, the linear isotropic elasticity is adopted as the biomechanical constraint. The estimation of kinematic functions (i.e., the full displacement and velocity field), and the distribution of Young’s modulus are computed simultaneously through an extended Kalman filter (EKF). Results In the following experiments the accuracy and robustness of this filtering framework is first evaluated on synthetic data in controlled conditions, and the performance of this framework is then evaluated in the real data collected from elastography phantom and patients using the ultrasound system. Quantitative analysis verifies that strain fields estimated by our filtering strategy are more closer to the ground truth. The distribution of Young’s modulus is also well estimated. Further, the effects of measurement noise and process noise have been investigated as well. Conclusions The advantage of this model-based algorithm over the conventional strain-based algorithm is its potential of providing the distribution of elasticity under a proper biomechanical model constraint. We address the model-data discrepancy and measurement noise by introducing process noise and measurement noise in our framework, and then the absolute values of Young’s modulus are estimated through the EFK in the MMSE sense. However, the initial conditions, and the mesh strategy will affect the performance, i.e., the convergence rate, and computational cost, etc.

Abstract:The purpose of ultrasound elastography is to identify lesions by reconstructing the hardness characteristics of tissue reconstructed from ultrasound data. Conventional quasi-static ultrasound elastography is easily applied to obtain axial strain components along the compression direction, with the results inverted to represent the distribution of tissue hardness under the assumption of constant internal stresses. However, previous works of quasi-static ultrasound elastography have found it difficult to obtain the lateral and shear strain components, due to the poor lateral resolution of conventional ultrasound probes. The physical nature of the strain field is a continuous vector field, which should be fully described by the axial, lateral, and shear strain components, and the clinical value of lateral and shear strain components of deformed tissue is gradually being recognized by both engineers and clinicians. Therefore, a biomechanical-model-constrained filtering framework is proposed here for recovering a full displacement field at a high spatial resolution from the noisy ultrasound data. In our implementation, after the biomechanical model constraint is integrated into the state-space equation, both the axial and lateral displacement components can be recovered at a high spatial resolution from the noisy displacement measurements using a robust H-infinity filter, which only requires knowledge of the worst-case noise levels in the measurements. All of the strain components can then be calculated by applying a gradient operator to the recovered displacement field. Numerical experiments on synthetic data demonstrated the robustness and effectiveness of our approach, and experiments on phantom data and in-vivo clinical data also produced satisfying results.

Abstract:Ultrasonic B-scan imaging is affected by the acoustic diffraction and electrical effects in nondestructive testing (NDT), resulting in insufficient lateral and temporal resolution for defect characterization. The minimum mean squared error (MMSE) method can improve the resolution by inversing a linear imaging model, which takes the acoustic diffraction and electrical effects into account, and achieve higher resolution than the synthetic aperture focusing technique (SAFT). However, its computation efficiency and resolution improvement are unsatisfactory due to the hypothetical Gaussian distribution of defects. To overcome these problems, a model-based regularized inverse method for ultrasonic B-scan image reconstruction is proposed. Benefitting from the sparse distribution of defects in NDT applications, the proposed method formulates an inverse objective function composed of l(1)-norm as well as l(2)-norm, and the sparse reconstruction by a separable approximation (SpaRSA) algorithm is adopted to obtain the optimal solution. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated by B-scan imaging of two 0.3 mm steel wires conducted both in simulation and experiment. The results verify that the proposed method improves the lateral and temporal resolution simultaneously with high computation efficiency.

Abstract:Abstract Quantitative ultrasound (QUS) has been widely used in non-destructive evaluation of bone health in research and clinical practice. To make a more accurate bone evaluation, the transmission characteristics of ultrasound in the bone need to be understood in detail. In the two-dimensional finite element model, cancellous bone is usually simulated by a non-porous structure solid or by approximating bone trabeculae as ellipses, which is different from real bone. However, although the error of the model constructed by bone CT images is small, it needs to be based on real bone samples, and the samples are limited. Therefore, a modeling method of cancellous bone based on four-parameter random growth method was proposed in this paper, and on this basis, numerical simulation of ultrasonic transmission was carried out. Firstly, based on the four-parameter random growth method, the aggregation algorithm is used to concentrate discrete pixels and smooth the edge of pores. Meanwhile, the built-in algorithm ensures the same porosity before and after processing to reduce the discrete pore structure. Secondly, based on COMSOL to establish the simulation model of ultrasonic propagation in cancellous bone, we analyzed the change of acoustic field distribution, discussed the correlation between the porosity of cancellous bone and backscattering coefficient (BSC) based on the ultrasonic backscattering method, and compared the experimental results of CT scan images of bone samples. The experimental results show that the cancellous bone modeling method in this paper has the same conclusion as the method based on CT images, which verifies the feasibility of this method. This method can generate a geometric model of the cancellous bone microstructure with specified porosity and different bone trabecular distribution, which is similar to the real bone structure, and can be directly imported into the finite element software to facilitate the study of bone microstructure related problems. It provides a more convenient method to study the mechanism of ultrasonic propagation in cancellous bone and has important significance in solving the inverse problem of recovering effective bone parameters from the received ultrasonic signals.

Abstract:A strain-based elastography is developed to identify lesions from the phase information of ultrasonic radio frequency (RF) signals in this study: a phase shift method using prior estimates is first applied to recover the axial displacement from RF signals, followed by a meshfree method to compute a smooth strain field from estimated displacement. The numerical complexity of our phase shift method can be reduced largely after using prior estimates without losing the accuracy comparing to popular techniques. Furthermore, our meshfree-based strain estimator can maintain the C1 continuity when calculating the strain map from the axial displacement. Each step of our framework is verified in synthetic data and real phantom data collected by ultrasound machine separately. The performance of our framework is also compared to popular techniques in ultrasound elastography in term of accuracy and efficiency. Overall, our framework shows a great potential in real time ultrasound elastography because of its higher efficiency and accuracy. © 2011 IEEE.
A Study on Two-Dimensional Ultrasonic Strain Reconstruction Using Finite Element Analysis Model and Tissue Experiment

Abstract:Elastography, which is a method for imaging the elastic behavior of soft tissues using ultrasonic echoes, has been under development recently. In this paper, a two-dimensional soft-tissue scattering simulation model based on Finite Element Analysis is established. Radio-frequency ultrasonic back-scattering signals from pre- and post- tissue compression models are obtained. The strain images are reconstructed by a cross-correlation based elastography procedure. The results show that the tissue lateral displacement introduce large errors into reconstructed strain. Use ultrasound beams which close the compression center, decrease the compression ratio can reduce this kind of errors. Experiment on soft tissue corroborates that the model presented in this article can be used to simulate elastographic experiment.

Abstract:In elastography, the existing cross-correlation method is limited within 2% or less compression. Such small compressions are required in order to reduce the influence of waveform distortion due to the compression. In this paper, a new method, namely multi-scale cross-correlation is proposed to overcome the limitation on compression. Computer simulation results indicate that this method can be used to reconstruct large strain of 10% or more. Abstract:In ultrasonic non-destructive testing, image reconstruction is essential to restore the diffracted ultrasound signals to improve the lateral resolution of images. Some reconstruction methods, like DAS-based synthetic aperture imaging, are inefficient, especially for reconstructing three-dimensional (3-D) images. Other methods do not provide high-resolution results, because they neglect the distortion effect introduced by transducer geometry. To overcome these disadvantages, we propose a 3-D ultrasonic image reconstruction method based on synthetic aperture wavenumber algorithm. It considers wave diffraction and transducer geometry effects, and can refocus the reflectors even in non-focal zone, which suits for large depth range imaging. This method builds a virtual transducer model in frequency domain by treating the focused transducer as a virtual planar transducer on its focal plane. In addition, the method uses non-uniform fast Fourier transform and deconvolution operation to achieve the 3-D image reconstruction, which has remarkably improved the efficiency and accuracy. According to the experimental results, the lateral resolution of an image reconstructed by the proposed method can reach 290.2 mu m, exceeding the lateral resolution limitation of the 15 MHz focused transducer (523.24 mu m). Furthermore, the proposed method only takes 0.744 s to reconstruct a 3-D image with 1000 x 100 x 100 pixels, while the time domain SAFT takes about 1163.8 s. It shows the potential for real-time 3-D imaging under advanced hardware.

Abstract:Based on the principle of elastic-plastic mechanics, the effect of strain on the measurement of ultrasonic transit time when the material was applied compression stress in the elastic area was analyzed. The model for measuring the stress using longitudinal waves was presented with the strain modified, and the transit time difference was obtained by a new method based on the echo signal of longitudinal wave. The transit time differences of the sample under stressed and unstressed state were measured, and the repeat error was less than 0.01%. The experimental results proved the correct of the model and the feasibility of the method estimating transit time difference. With the strain modified, the relationship between the transit time difference and stress can be more accurately manifested.

Abstract:Biological soft tissue elasticity imaging using ultrasound is studied in this paper.Ordinary ultrasonic imaging use acoustic impedance as the imaging parameters,which can only reflect the change and the distribution of acoustic properties of tissue.When the lesion acoustic impedance changes very little while the elasticity varies much,it is necessary to detect the change in both the acoustic and the mechanical properties of tissue using ultrasound elasticity imaging.It has been more than twenty years since the concept of elastic imaging was put forward.In order to realize the elastic properties of the soft tissue of the real-time,fast,high resolution imaging,there has been much research work on theory and clinical experiment. Elasticity imaging gradually becomes the focus of ultrasound imaging in medical field.The principle of ultrasonic elasticity imaging mainly includes the traditional elasticity imaging,radiation force imaging and shear wave imaging.The traditional e-lasticity imaging is a static compression method based on elasticity,in which the global elastic distribution of tissue can be obtained by strain estimation.The previous research mainly includes the principle,algorithm,signal processing,noise suppression and inverse problems etc.Radiation force imaging and shear wave imaging are new imaging methods based on a-coustic radiation force,in which the local elastic information nearby the acoustic focusing can be obtained.Moving the focus position can obtain the global distribution of elastic properties.In this paper,the simulation on ultrasound elasticity imaging of biological soft tissue by using finite element method was studied.By changing the internal distribution and the values of Young’s modulus,the displacement and strain distribution in different cases can be calculated and the simulation results are analyzed.In previous simulation and experimental study,soft tissue is considered as linear elastic model.In this paper,the tissue model is revised by adding consideration of biological tissue viscoelasticity.The simulation results coincide well with the real situation using this optimization of the organizational model.Simulation results show that the use of micro-strain compression method can be realized from the distribution of elastic tissue imaging,and the simulation results by considering viscoelasticity show that the stress,strain and displacement in the tissue are functions of time.

Abstract:The main methodologies are introduced for the simulation of medical ultrasound imaging.The significance and the application prospects of simulation studies are also discussed.The existing ultrasound imaging simulation methods are divided into two groups: linear assumption based and nonlinear assumption based.Representative methods in each group as well as the differences between two groups are presented and compared.The simulation method based on the numerical solution of acoustic wave equations may provide more realistic simulation of real ultrasound imaging.It can be used as an efficient tool for understanding various phenomena in ultrasound imaging and establishing relationships between tissue properties and image features.

Abstract:Noninvasive diagnosis of bone density and mechanical properties using non-radiation imaging modality is an emerging area with promising in early prediction of osteopenia and treatment effectiveness in the clinic and functional disuse, i.e., long-term bedrest and space mission. Advances in quantitative ultrasound have shown advantages in measuring both bone density and mechanical strength, non-radiation, imaging capability, and easy to use. The challenge that remained is the poor penetration of ultrasound signals passing through trabecular and cortical bones and acoustic energy scattering. A new scanning confocal ultrasound technology is developed in this lab to detect the alteration of bone to provide diagnostic results in bone density and structure properties. A software-controlled flexible ultrasound system with 2-D dual array transducer is developed and proposed for the purpose of noninvasive bone density diagnosis and assessment of bone loss. Transmitting (Tx) transducer elements are divided into sub-blocks to excite the ultrasound signals in sequence to decrease the system complexity while maintaining beam pattern properties by the signal processing procedure at receiving (Rx) side. Apodization is also applied to reduce acoustic side lobes and to make the resolution in the ultrasound field of view (FOV) more uniform. This study may provide basic understanding of modulated confocal ultrasound beam forming for tissue characterization, such as trabecular bone structual and strength properties.

Abstract:Commonly, ultrasound elastography can only obtain the axial strain distribution of tissues with an external compression. The solution of the inverse problem in ultrasound elastography, e.g., to reconstruct the elastic modulus distribution within the tissues, is of great importance. In this paper, a method by the use of the stress-strain relations and the iterative calculation based on the finite element analysis was proposed to reconstruct the elastic modulus distribution from the axial strain distribution of tissues. Computer simulations in the plane strain state were performed on a model of a homogeneous tissue embedded with a circular hard inclusion and on a model with continuously varying tissue moduli, respectively. Preliminary results demonstrated the feasibility of this method.
Internal strain and elasticity estimation of soft tissue based on interscatterer spacings

Abstract:A new method was put forward to detect the discontinuity of ultrasonic backscattering signals by dyadic wavelet transform. It can locate the regular scatters and obtain the internal strain and elasticity distribution of soft tissue. The transient point detection method is robust. The motion estimation by using interscatterer spacing eliminates ultrasonic speckle decorrelation, computing complex and accumulated errors. The internal strain and elasticity estimation can distinguish the tissue with different Young's modulus with high spatial resolution.

Abstract:Since the waveform of an echo is more distorted under larger compression, elastography can be applied in cases where the compression is only a few percent. To reduce errors due to distortion of the echo waveform, a novel algorithm (i.e. the multi-scale correlation algorithm) for strain profile reconstruction is proposed in this article. The basic idea of this method is to simulate human vision: first, we locate the region of the target, and then match the detail within this region and make a comprehensive criterion. Based on this concept, three different approach algorithms are proposed and investigated: (1) the two-step method, (2) the multi-scale correlation algorithm, and (3) the extended multi-scale correlation algorithm. To evaluate the algorithms proposed in this work, a computer simulation model is used and a sequence of simulation experiments are performed. The correlating specificity is used as a criterion for evaluating the performance characteristics of the correlation estimation. The results show that the extended multi-scale correlation algorithm performs significantly better than the other two methods proposed in this article under moderate compression ratios. The extended multi-scale correlation algorithm is applicable to both small and moderate compression ratios. This novel algorithm may provide a useful tool for the clinical application of elastograms.
A Non-invasive Method to Estimate the Stress-Strain Curve of Soft Tissue Using Ultrasound Elastography

Abstract:Ultrasound elastography performed under small strain conditions has been intensively studied. However, small deformations may be not sufficiently large to differentiate some abnormal tissues. By combining quasi-static and shear wave elastography, we developed a non-invasive method to estimate the localized stress- strain curve of materials. This method exerts progressive multistep uniaxial compression on the materials, and shear wave measurements were performed at every compression step. This method estimates the 2-D displacements between steps via a 2-D region growing motion tracking method and accumulates these displacements to obtain the large material displacements with respect to the initial configuration. At each step, the shear modulus and stress were calculated according to linear elastic theory. The proposed method was tested on custom-made tissue-mimicking phantoms. Mechanical compression testing was conducted on the samples made of the same material as the phantoms and taken as the reference. The stress-strain curves for the same material from the proposed method and from mechanical testing are in good agreement. The root mean square error (RMSE) and area percentage error (APE) of the stress-strain curve between ultrasound measurement and mechanical testing for soft materials ranged from 0.18 to 0.26 kPa and from 5.6% to 7.8%, respectively. The RMSE and APE for stiff materials ranged from 0.56 to 1.17 kPa and 8.0% to 17.9%. Therefore, our method was able to provide good estimates of the stress-strain curve for tissue-mimicking materials.
Separation of soft tissue reflected and scattered ultrasonic wave by echo reconstruction method

Abstract:Based on computer simulated reconstruction of echo, a method is developed to separate ultrasonic echo reflected and scattered by soft tissue. This method puts not only the amplitude attenuation but also the frequency ingredients variation of propagating ultrasonic waves into consideration. To implement this method, an originally developed multi-layered medium model of ultrasonic propagation has been modified to allow for different attenuation coefficients of different layers, and some effective methods of estimating attenuation and reflection coefficients are developed. For the sake of robustness of attenuation coefficient estimation, the redundant auto-correlation algorithm is proposed. Computer simulations and phantom experiments are carried out, and the effectiveness of the methods is verified.

Abstract:Ultrasonic backscattered signals can provide useful information about tissue microstructures.Based on an original simulation model for a backscattered signal,four main parameters are proposed to represent tissue character- istics which influence the estimation of mean scatterer spacing(MSS).This model helps evaluate the performance of various mean scatterer spacing techniques.Autoregressive(AR)cepstrum method is used to validate the four param- eters' rationality.The simulated results indicate that the four parameters can represent the tissue characteristics, which influence the estimation of the MSS.A comparison between simulation signals and real tissue ultrasonic back- scattered signals is made to prove that simulated signals are fairly similar to the backscattered signals from quasiperi- odic tissues.
