Abstract:Optical vortices have developed rapidly in recent times owing to their theoretical significance and attractive potential applications in extensive realms. Composite optical vortices using two or more coherently superimposed vortex beams have been widely researched. Here, we propose a novel beam pattern incoherently generated by laser beams with two distinct wavelengths. We apply this beam pattern in fluorescence super-resolution imaging based on the stimulated emission effect, and find that the size of the resulting dark spot in the focal plane lies below the diffraction limit. Crucial factors affecting the sub-diffraction dark spot, such as beam intensities, spatial displacement, pulse width, polarization, and aberration, are studied in detail. We believe that the results are beneficial for experimental studies and will serve as useful references in other circumstances where they may be utilized.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate spatial dark solitons in nonlocal nonlinear media. Based on the nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger equation and the diffusion equation, the numerical solutions with different propagation constants are obtained by using the Newton iterative method. And it is found that there exist dark soliton solutions .and the relation between the width of dark soliton and the degree of nonlocality for any propagation constant under arbitrary nonlocal degrees different propagation constants. In experiments, we observe the formation of the spatial dark solitons in the solution of dye. The influence of Gaussian background on dark solitons is also discussed, and the numerical results are in agreement with the experimental results.

Abstract:Based on the thermal nonlinear optical effect, the dark spatial optical solitons stimulated with a strong CW laser in the toluene solution of C60 were studied. Propagation beam method was used to simulate thermal nonlinear effects. The width of optical soliton in dark spatial is 50 ��m. The experimental light road layout was given. The realization of phase sudden changes and odd boundary conditions were discussed.

Abstract:<p>Dark solitons are widely studied because of their unique characteristics in inhomogeneous optical fibers. A fourth-order nonlinear Schrödinger equation is studied in this paper. Dark soliton solutions are obtained by the Hirota method. With some suitable functions of the variable coefficients, interactions among dark solitons are presented, and their interaction properties are analyzed. Results have some potentially applications in optical fibers and the design of optical switches.</p>

Abstract:The experiments of generation and evolution of dark spatial soliton, which was described by the nonlinear Schrodinger equation, using method of wavefront perturbation were reported. The generation of dark spatial solitons were confirmed. The evolution of dark spatial solitons were observed and were consistent with that of computer simulation. Changing experimental parameters, such as width of wires, nonlinear optical coefficient and laser intensity, leads to the change of induced waveguides. These results will be valuable to all optical steerable waveguide device.

Abstract:In this paper, the spatial optical dark soliton filamentization in a nonlocal self-defocusing Kerr medium is investigated. Theoretically, starting from nonlocal nonlinear theoretical model, we examine the influences of the degree of nonlocality and the attenuation constant on the formation of dark soliton filaments by numerical simulation method. We find that when the input background optical intensity is determined, the greater the degree of nonlocality, the farther the initial point of the formation of dark filaments is and the less the number of dark filaments decreases with the increase of the degree of nonlocality; when the ratio of the background optical intensity to the critical optical intensity is fixed, the degree of nonlocality can hardly influence the number of dark filaments and the number of dark filaments under nonlocality is equal to that under locality. Besides, when the input background optical intensity is determined, the number of dark filaments decreases with the increase of the attenuation constant. Experimentally, by changing the concentration of dye solution and the ellipticity of background light, we discuss the influences of the concentration of sample and the ellipticity of background light on the formation of dark soliton filaments respectively and find that when the input background average optical intensity is determined, the number of dark filaments decreases with the increases of the concentration of sample and the ellipticity of background light; when the ratio of the background average optical intensity to the critical optical intensity is fixed, the concentration of sample can hardly influence the number of dark filaments. Besides, the phenomenon of optical shock wave is found in our experiment. © 2012 Chinese Physical Society.

Abstract:The experimental setup and the even boundary condition of the thermal dark spatial optical solitons were designed, and the experiment was realized in chlorophyll acetone. In the experiment, two dark strips were observed in the output field of chlorophyll acetone. In order to prove that these two strips were symmetrically distributed dark spatial optical solitons, the experiment was conducted in various height of chlorophyll acetone from 3.0 cm to 4.0 cm with step of 0.1 cm. The numerical results of thermal dark solitons were simulated by the split step Fourier method. The results were in agreement with the experimental ones.
Dark spatial soliton and induced flexible waveguide in C60 solution

Abstract:Dark spatial optical solitons arising from balancing of self-defocusing effects and diffraction effects are of current interest because of potential applications such as optical switching, optical limiting, optical interconnection, and optical waveguides. Theoretical analysis shows that there is a phase jump in the central of the dark solution. In the authors experiments, a glass platelet is placed in the half of the beam profile of a Ar+ laser with intensity about 50 mw to form a phase jump. The beam is focused by a cylindrical lens, then passes through a liquid cell contained C60-toluene solution and becomes a narrow dark strip with a bright background, which is a black spatial soliton with width of 57 ��m. To observe the flexible waveguide, a He-Ne beam was sent into the dark soliton with use of another glass platelet. Two polarizers are used for testing the He-Ne light spot, which appears inside the dark soliton: According to the authors theoretical analysis, the thermal self-defocusing affect can be regarded approximately as a Kerr effect for the size of medium smaller than the width of dark soliton, so that the refractive index of medium can be written as n = no + n2I. The evolution of the dark spatial soliton have been simulated by use of the nonlinear Schrodinger equation with the boundary condition for a Gaussian beam and experimental data.

Abstract:We study the evolution of dark spatial solitons by chi((2)): chi((2)) cascaded nonlinearity. The generation and evolution of solitons pairs by the optical branching effect is investigated. It is shown that the number of solitons pairs and the transverse velocity of a given pair depend on the parameters of the input beam. We also investigate the hollows generated in a beam with a uniform background when the two sides of the input beam have various phase difference. It is concluded that dark spatial solitons by chi((2)): chi((2)) cascaded nonlinearity have analog performance compared with that in chi((3)) defocusing Kerr media.

Abstract:Under investigation in this paper is a variable-coefficient higher-order nonlinear Schrodinger equation, which has certain applications in the inhomogeneous optical fiber communication. Through the Hirota method, bilinear forms, dark one- and two-soliton solutions for such an equation are obtained. We graphically study the solitons with d(1)(z), d(2)(z) and d(3)(z), which represent the variable coefficients of the group-velocity dispersion, third-order dispersion and fourth-order dispersion, respectively. With the different choices of the variable coefficients, we obtain the parabolic, periodic and V-shaped dark solitons. Head-on and overtaking collisions are depicted via the dark two soliton solutions. Velocities of the dark solitons are linearly related to d(1)(z), d(2)(z) and d(3)(z), respectively, while the amplitudes of the dark solitons are not related to such variable coefficients.

Abstract:In this letter, we study a (2[Formula: see text]+[Formula: see text]1)-dimensional variable-coefficient nonlinear Schrödinger system, which describes an optical beam inside the two-dimensional graded-index waveguide with polarization effects. Through the Kadomtsev–Petviashvili hierarchy reduction, the [Formula: see text] dark–dark soliton and [Formula: see text] bright-dark soliton solutions in terms of the Gramian are obtained, where [Formula: see text] is a positive integer. We analyze the interaction and propagation of the dark–dark solitons graphically. With the different values of the diffraction coefficient [Formula: see text], periodic-, cubic- and parabolic-shaped dark–dark solitons are derived. With the different values of the gain/loss coefficient [Formula: see text], periodic- and arctangent-profile background waves are obtained. Moreover, we discuss the effects from the dimensionless beam width [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] on the solitons and background waves: Shapes of the solitons are affected by [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text], while profiles of the background waves are affected by [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text].
