Abstract:Theoretical dynamic analysis is developed for a composite hollow sphere constructed of elastic and pyroelectric layers subjected to spherically symmetric thermal loads. By introducing an unknown time function in terms of the charge equation of electrostatics for the pyroelectric layer, the solution for the mechanical field, in which the unknown time function is involved, is obtained directly in the time domain by the method of superposition, state space method as well as the separation of variables method. By employing the prescribed electric potential boundary conditions, the unknown time function is finally determined by solving a second kind Volterra integral equation. The transient responses for uniformly heated steel/CdSe composite hollow sphere are presented.

Abstract:Pyroelectric properties of 0.9PbZrO(3-x)PbTiO3-(0.1-x)Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O-3 composite ceramics prepared with spark plasma sintering technique (SPS) combined with a thermal treatment were investigated. Dense composite ceramics were obtained from starting compositions of x = 0.025 and x = 0.05 by spark plasma sintering at 800degreesC for 10 minutes. Two pyroelectric peaks near 23degreesC and 47degreesC, which corresponded to two starting compositions, were observed for samples thermal treated at low temperatures. The diffusion between two compositions increases with increasing heat treatment temperature. This ceramic had high and stable pyroclectric coefficient in a wide temperature range.

Abstract:In this paper, composite ceramics (1-x)Pb0.99Nb0.02[(Zr0.57Sn0.43)0.94Ti0.06]0.98O3:xAlN (abbreviated (1-x)PNZST:xAlN, x=0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4) were prepared by a two-step solid phase synthesis method. The crystal structure, micromorphology, domain structure evolution, as well as the ferroelectric, dielectric and pyroelectric properties of composite ceramics were systematically investigated. The results show that the difference of thermal expansion coefficients of PNZST and AlN leads to compressive stresses in the PNZST matrix when cooling down from the sintering temperature, then a metastable ferroelectric (FE) phase was induced in the anti-FE matrix by the AlN component-induced internal stress, and in turn ferroelectric/antiferroelectric phase boundary was constructed near room temperature, as the temperature increases, the ferroelectric→antiferroelectric phase transition causes a larger pyroelectric current peak. In particular, the composition with x=0.1 exhibit high pyroelectric coefficient with p=33.0<teshuzifu>x10-4 C<teshuzifu>×m-2<teshuzifu>×K-1 and figures of merit with current responsivity Fi=31.6<teshuzifu>x10-10 m<teshuzifu>×V-1,voltage responsivity Fv=61.3<teshuzifu>x10-2 m2<teshuzifu>×C-1, and detectivity Fd=44.0<teshuzifu>x10-5Pa-1/2 around human body temperature. Moreover, the enhanced pyroelectric coefficients exist in a broad operation temperature range with a large full width at half maximums of 16.3℃ at 37℃. As the increase of AlN content, the pyroelectric peak temperature of the composite ceramic is adjustable in a wide temperature range of 37-73℃, showing good temperature stability.
On the product property of 0-3 piezoelectric ceramic-polymer composites

Abstract:The product property between thermal expansion and piezoelectricity in composites prepared from the piezoelectric ceramics and polymers was presented. A theoretical analysis on the product property was made based on the series and parallel models of the composites, and from which, the necessary condition for the highest product effect of biphase composites was found to be that the value fractions of the two phases equal 0.5 approximately. As the practical examples, the composites, that use piezoelectric PZT particles, TGS grains, and BT particles as the active component and use the PVDF as the matrix were tested, and the enhanced pyroelectricity of the composites was observed, which is in agreement with the theoretical prediction.

In the composite of x = 0.4, high-angle annular dark-field imaging combined with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy reveal the existence of both ZnO and Zn2SnO4. The formation of Zn2SnO4 indicates that Sn in the PNZST matrix grain is selectively extracted, and decomposition of the perovskite phase has taken place. The decomposition products in the form of fine particles are observed to facilitate the nucleation of the antiferroelectric phase and restrict the motion of the phase boundary during heating. The larger amount of ZnO and Zn2SnO4 and the decomposition of the PNZST perovskite phase are suggested to be responsible for the much lower pyroelectric coefficient in the x = 0.4 composite.

Electrical Properties Of Low-Fire Ferroelectric Plus Ferrimagnetic Ceramic Composite

Abstract:A low-fire, densified ferroelectric+ferrimagnetic ceramic composite consisting of Pb(Ni1/3Nb2/3)O-3-PbZrO3-PbTiO3 (PNZT) and Ni-Cu-Zn ferrite powders is prepared at temperatures below 900 degrees C. The low-fire densification behavior is attributed to the migration of PbO from PNZT into Ni-Cu-Zn ferrite, enhancing the sintering compatibility between PNZT and ferrite. this in turn promotes the densification of the binary composite taking place at temperatures close to those of pure PNZT and Ni-Cu-Zn ferrite. For all compositions investigated, no new phases except the initial ferroelectric PNZT and ferrimagnetic Ni-Cu-Zn ferrite were detected in the ceramic composites. Both the saturation polarization in the polarizationelectric field hysteresis curves and the dielectric constant of the binary PNZT+ferrite composite increase with increasing ferroelectric PNZT content. With increasing ferrimagnetic Ni-Cu-Zn ferrite content in the composite, the coercive magnetic field decreases but the saturation magnetization and initial permeability increase.

Abstract:This paper reports the preparation method of PZT-PVDF pyroelectric composites and analyzes the surface morphology and microcrystalline structure by SEM and XRD methods respectively. The dielectric and pyroelectric properties of the composites with various weight fractions are discussed in the paper also. The dielectric loss behaviour and pyroelectric coefficient of the composite are measured by bridge and direct methods respectively. The value of p is 14nC/cm(2) degrees C at 100 degrees C.

Abstract:Using a Ginzburg–Landau–Devonshire type model, the pyroelectric property and hysteresis loop are studied for a composite ferroelectric thin film that contains an insertion of a different type of ferroelectric material in parallel connection with the host ferroelectric film material. If these two types of ferroelectric materials are polarized along the same direction, there are two peaks occur in the pyroelectric coefficient vs temperature curve. If the two ferroelectric materials are polarized in opposite directions, one positive and one negative coefficient peaks occur in the temperature dependence of pyroelectric coefficient curve and the hysteresis loop appears to be a quasi-double loop. The effect of the external electric field on the pyroelectric coefficient is also investigated.

Abstract:A nonlinear thermodynamic formalism is developed to calculate the pyroelectric property of epitaxial single domain SrTiO3/Si heterojunctions by taking into account the thermal expansion misfit strain at different temperatures. It has been demonstrated that the crucial role was played by the contribution associated with the structure order parameter arising from the rotations of oxygen octahedral on pyroelectricity. A dramatic decrease in the pyroelectric coefficient due to the strong coupling between the polarization and the structure order parameter is found at ferroelectric T-F1-T-F2 phase transition. At the same time, the thermal expansion mismatch between film and substrate is also found to provide an additional weak decrease of pyroelectricity. The analytic relationship of the out- of- plane pyroelectric coefficient and dielectric constant of ferroelectric phases by considering the thermal expansion of thin films and substrates has been determined for the first time. Our research provides another avenue for the investigation of the pyroelectric effects of ferroic thin films, especially, such as antiferroelectric and multiferroic materials having two or more order parameters.
Realizing a Ferroelectric State and High Pyroelectric Performance in Antiferroelectric-Oxide Composites

Abstract:We report a robust room temperature ferroelectric (FE) state in (1 - x)Pb0.99Nb0.02[(Zr0.57Sn0.43)0.933Ti0.067]0.98O3-xZnO ((1 - x)PNZST-xZnO) composites, where PNZST shows a predominant antiferroelectric (AFE) nature due to ZnO-induced internal strain. Upon heating, a FE-AFE transition occurs and generates high pyroelectric performance. The composite with x = 0.1 shows a peak pyroelectric coefficient of p = 2450.7 × 10-4 C m-2 K-1 and figures of merit of current responsivity Fi = 926.9 × 10-10 m V-1, voltage responsivity Fv = 1334.3 × 10-2 m2 C-1, and detectivity Fd = 1194.8 × 10-5 Pa-1/2, which are about two orders of magnitude higher than those of most perovskite pyroelectric oxides. More interestingly, the FE-AFE transition temperature, i.e., the temperature corresponding to peak pyroelectric performance, is tunable in a wide temperature range from 30 °C to 65 °C. This work not only provides a promising material candidate for high performance pyroelectric devices, but also an alternative idea to develop ferroelectric and pyroelectric properties based on antiferroelectric materials.

Abstract:Polymer-ceramic composites with pyroelectric sensitivity are presented as promising candidates for sensing applications. Selection of the appropriate ceramic filler and the polymer matrix is one of the key parameters in the development of optimized materials for specific applications. In this work lead-titanate (PT) ceramic particulate is incorporated into a polymer matrix, polyethylene oxide (PEO) with a relatively high electrical conductivity to develop sensitive and at the same time flexible composites. PT particles are dispersed in PEO at varying volume fractions, and composite materials are cast in the form of films to measure their dielectric, piezoelectric and pyroelectric properties. From these data the piezoelectric voltage coefficients as well as pyroelctric figures of merit of the composite films have been determined. In order to determine the effect of electrical conductivity of the polymer matrix on the poling efficiency and the final properties, a poling study has been performed. Improving the electrical conductivity of the polymer phase enhances the poling process significantly. It is found that both the piezoelectric and the pyroelectric figures of merit increase with concentration of PT. PT–PEO composites show superior pyroelectric sensitivity compared to other composites with less conductive polymer matrices.

Abstract:This paper reports the static and hyper-frequency magnetic properties, as well as their relationship with microstructure, of the ferromagnetic-ferroelectric co-fired composite ceramic, (1-x) Ba(2)Zn(1.2)Cu(0.8)Fe(12) O(22)-xPb(Ni(1/3)Nb(2/3))(0.8)Ti(0.2)O(3). The X-ray diffraction results did not detect any other phase in the co-fired ceramics, but found a crystal structural distortion of ferrite phase. Scanning electron microscopy photos showed that two phases' grains matched well and stacked compactly and the hexagonal ferrite changed its grain morphology. The saturation magnetization increased with the reduction of magnetic phase in the range of 0<x<0.65 because of the stress-induced structural distortion. The permeability decreases monotonically with the reduction of magnetic phase in the whole composition range. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Pyroelectric and Pyromagnetic Coefficients of Functionally Graded Multilayered Multiferroic Composites

Abstract:This paper presents a method for analyzing some product properties of functionally graded magneto-electro-thermoelastic (METE) multilayer composites. The method is based on an exact matrix formulation for the effective properties of multilayer composites with various coupled physical effects including piezoelectricity, piezomagnetism, and thermoelasticity. Analytical expressions are derived for the effective properties of a functionally graded transversely isotropic METE multilayer composite. The effects of functional gradation on the pyroelectric and pyromagnetic coefficients are numerically evaluated. It is shown that both the pyroelectric and pyromagnetic coefficients can be significantly enhanced (more than two times) by functional gradation, and the relative volume fractions at which these coefficients are maximized tend to extreme values. It is thus demonstrated that the present method can be used in the design of multilayered METE composites for the purpose of achieving a maximum energy conversion or transduction capability.
