Abstract:The properties and transient mechanism of excited-state optical storage in azo dyes polymer system were reported, including the dynamic process of optical storage, phase conjugation signal versus pre-excitation intensity. Moreover, the micro-mechanism of excited-state nonlinearity and optical storage of material are explained. The experiments are performed by a four-wave mixing (FWM) using a He-Ne laser as under pre-excitation of a Nd:YAG laser for searching the transient mechanism of azo polymer system, and another forward FWM using a He-Ne laser as a source of forward FWM under a pre-excitation of an argon ion laser for searching pre-excitation optical storage mechanism. An energy level model of azo dye doped in polymer is set up to explain excited-state optical storage mechanism.

Abstract:Four-wave mixing spectroscopy is presented as a convenient and effective optical method for the study of excited-state optical storage properties and nonlinear mechanisms in a dye-doped polymer film. The dynamic processes of optical storage properties and the efficiency of the diffraction,orating are discussed. Backward-scattering four-wave mixing and forward-scattering four-wave mixing optical configurations are presented. A simple energy-level model is used to explain the excited-state optical storage mechanism, resulting from photoinduced excited-state population grating and trans-cis isomer grating.

Abstract:We report experimental results of the nonresonant third-order nonlinear properties of an acceptor-donor azo dye doped in polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) thin films by degenerate four-wave mixing with a He-Ne laser, which have appreciable nonresonant third-order nonlinearity, (chi) (3) being approximately 4 X 10-4 esu. The OPC signal has strong sensitivity with the polarization of the three incident beams, and the self- refracted phase conjugation by the coupled two counter-propagation beams was studied. In conclusion, nonresonant third-order nonlinear mechanism is demonstrated to be a result of photoinduced birefringence of the azo molecules. The real-time polarization storage properties of the azo dye were used in the interferometry to measure the shape variation of the object.

Abstract:Polymer materials show their impact on optical storage technology for developing high information density and fast access-type memories. A new push-pull azo dye-doped polymer material has been developed by a spin coating process and used for write-once optical media in this paper. The absorption spectrum of the spin-coated thin film show a strong and broad absorption region at the 400 - 550 nm, which matched with the wavelengths of Ar-laser. The optical recording performance of the azo dye-doped polymer thin film show that higher reflectivity contrast can be obtained at lower writing power and writing pulse width using an Ar- laser (514.5 nm) irradiation.

Abstract:A new azo dyedoped poly (methymethacrylate) (PMMA) film has been prepared by means of spincoating method. Absorption, steadystate fluorescence and timeresolved fluorescence spectra of the film have been measured. The kinetics of the decay process of fluorescence has been studied. The excited singlet (S1) state lifetimes for trans and cis isomers of the film at room temperature have been obtained.

Abstract:A polyimide polymer containing azobenzene side groups was used to demonstrate the ability of optical storage. Writing and reading processes in the polyimide film were performed using degenerate four-wave mixing. The time response of the light-induced gratings was characterized by three components, a fastest, a faster and a slower, which were attributed to the excited-state population, the trans–cis isomerization and the reorientation of azobenzene molecules, respectively. The dependence of this dynamic behavior on the sample temperature was investigated, and was found that with the increase of the sample temperature the contribution of the orientation component to the light-induced gratings became more and more dominant.
Supramolecular Bisazopolymers Exhibiting Enhanced Photoinduced Birefringence and Enhanced Stability of Birefringence for Four-Dimensional Optical Recording

Abstract:Extremely stable, high-density information storage media were prepared by the connection of two azobenzene groups via hydrogen bonding to form supramolecular bisazopolymers. The supramolecular bisazopolymers contain 4-((4-hydroxyphenyl)diazenyl)benzonitrile (AzoCN) as a hydrogen bonding donor and poly(6-(4-(pyridin-4-yldiazenyl)phenoxy)hexyl methacrylate) (pAzopy) as a hydrogen bonding acceptor. High quality films of the supramolecular bisazopolymers pAzopy/(AzoCN) x (x = 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1.0) with different molar ratios of donor/acceptor were prepared by spin-casting. The supramolecular bisazopolymers spontaneously form lamellar structures with a periodic thickness of 7.1 nm. These samples exhibit optically induced birefringence. The birefringence and proportion of remnant birefringence increase from 0.0265 to 0.1 and 50.5% to 108%, respectively, as the content of AzoCN in the samples increases, which indicates a larger proportion of AzoCN enhances both the birefringence and its stability. We also use an azopolymer without pyridine groups (pAzoCH(3)) and AzoCN to do a control experiment, which shows that pAzoCH(3)/(AzoCN)(1.0) do not show significant enhanced birefringence and its stability. The enhancements in pAzopy/(AzoCN) x are because of the unique structure of the supramolecular bisazopolymers. A new laser direct writing system has been developed for optical recording on the azopolymers. The pAzopy/(AzoCN)(1.0) film is significantly better at image recording than the pAzopy film, because the optically recorded images on the pAzopy/ (AzoCN)(1.0) film are very clear after storage for four months whereas the optically recorded images on the pAzopy one disappear after just one day. Four-dimensional optical recording has been achieved by integrating the polarization and the intensity of the laser and the two dimensions of a plane. An information density of about 0.93 Gbit cm(-2) could be optically recorded on the pAzopy/(AzoCN) 1.0 film, which is about 20 times the information density of a normal DVD.

Abstract:While single wavelength all-optical information encoding through optically induced orientation of azobenzene dyes is being extensively pursued, we propose multi-wavelength optical data processing and recording based on disperse red 1 (DR1) and 4-(4-hydroxybutyloxy) azobenzene doped organic-inorganic hybrid films to increase the density of recording data. By investigating the change of absorbance spectrum of the doped film under different irradiations, results indicate a laser pulses around 470 nm would be suitable as the probe beam. In the measurement of optical data processing and recording, two cw lasers pulse at 532 nm and 355 nm induce trans-cis isomerization of the azo-dyes in the film, while the output of the probe beam record the processed data as {(-1), (0), (1)} according to different inputs of the pump beams. Since the light induced isomerization has a sensitive response in the as-prepared solid organic-inorganic matrix system, the films is promising as recording and monitoring element in all-optical devices over a wide range of repetition rates.

Abstract:A simple all-optical switch based on photoinduced birefringence effect is demonstrated in azo dye (DR1) doped polymer (PMMA) thin films. The all-optical switching effect has been studied at different control beam power and different temperatures of the sample. With a control power of 30.7 mW and at 56 ℃, the response time of the switching is less than 5 ms, and the depth of the modulation reaches 80%.

Abstract:A new type molecule [3-azo-(4'-nitro)]-(9-ethyl)-carbazole (ANECz) doped in poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) was synthesized and studied. The polymer film possesses large magnitude of photo-induced birefringence (δn=1.8×10 -2). Bicolor image storage has been performed by degenerate four-wave mixing (DFWM) technique. The competition mechanism of bicolor storage was analyzed. Both photoelectric and image storage records were presented.

Abstract:Azo dye is a new class of optical disc medium with high-density recording performance for its remarkable optical and thermal properties within short wavelength region. Furthermore, azo dye is a promising candidate for rewritable optical disc medium for its trans-cis photoisomerization. In this paper, the recent R and D in these aspects were reviewed, and the principles and requirements of azo dyes as recordable storing media and rewritable storing media have been described, respectively. The effects of the spectroscopic, optical and thermal properties of azo dyes on the recording characteristics were discussed. The future of research in these aspects was discussed also.

Abstract:Presents the study on characterization and mechanism of real-time polarization holographic storage in acceptor-donor azobenzene derivatives doped in polymethyl methacrylate film by degenerate four-wave mixing, including time-properties of grating dependence of the incident beam polarization states, and comparing the storage capability of the materials with azobenzene molecular configuration and concludes that the materials have highly sensitive third-order nonlinearity and real-time holographic storage ability which mainly result from the azobenzene molecular reorientation in photoinduced cis-trans isomerization in low power.

Abstract:Supramolecular azopolymers were prepared through strong hydrogen bonding interaction between pyridine moiety of poly (4-vinylpyridine) (P4VP) and phenol moiety of 4-nitro- 4'-hydroxyazobenzene (AzoOH). FT-IR spectrum verifies the hydrogen bonding formed between them. High quality ﬁlms of the supramolecular P4VP/(AzoOH)x (x=0.1,0.25,0.5,0.75,1.0) complexes with different azochromophore concentration were obtained by drop-coating. Erasable polarization data storage was observed in the supramolecular azopolymer films owing to two-photon-induced anisotropy of azochromophore. Moreover, with the increasing content of azochromophore, the threshold for data recording is decreased dramatically from 12mW to 5mW and the image recorded in supramolecular P4VP/(AzoOH)1.0 films are much more clear after storing for 3 days, respectively, which indicates that a larger proportion of AzoOH enhances both photo-orientation degree and its stability.

Abstract:Three push–pull type azo dyes, 4′-{[(2-hydroxylethyl)methyl]amino}-4-nitroazobenzene (compound I), 1-[4-(4′-nitrophenyl)-azophenyl]-3,5-biphenyl-2-pyrazoline (compound II) and 1-[4-(4′-nitrophenyl)-azophenyl]-3-(3′-trifluoromethyl)-phenyl-5-phenyl-2-pyrazoline (compound III) were synthesized. The cis–trans isomerization process and polarized photoinduced birefringence of those azo dyes doped PMMA films were investigated. It was found that the rise and relaxation process of birefringence signals were fit with biexponential functions and the molecular structures have effects on their photo-induced birefringence. This suggests that the three films have similar storage speed when the laser intensity is high enough. Compound III, which has the biggest substituent, has the largest long-term storage ability and can even keep 90% of its saturated birefringence.

Abstract:Employing all-optical poling technique, we propose a novel method of optical storage based on the mechanism of photoinduced isomerization and reorientation of azobenzenes. The recording of an optical binary image was experimentally demonstrated in an ate-dye doped polymer film. The recorded information can be permanently stored and also can be erased rapidly with a circularly polarized light. Furthermore, a wavelength conversion of optical image can be obtained using such method.

Abstract:The Optical storage and modulation properties of azobenzene conductive organic films were studied by use of photo-induced birefringence. The experimental results indicate that, the azobenzene side-chain polymers possess more excellent optical storage properties, however, the azobenzene doped polymers are the proper candidates for optical modulation. A new polarized-light-controlled holographic recording based on the optical enhancement/restraint of self-diffraction has been demonstrated in azobenzene doped polymer film. It is found that a continuous variation of the polarization status of the pumping light results in a continuous variation of self-diffraction efficiency with a range of 0 °-90 °.

Abstract:In the past, four-wave mixing for real-time holography storage based on ground-state absorption at the resonant wavelength has been extensively studied in azo-dye-doped polymer films. We report theoretical and experimental studies on the four-wave mixing based on the excited-state absorption at a nonresonant wavelength using ethylorange-doped polyvinyl alcohol films. In our experiments, we use two laser beams: a 632.8-nm He-Ne laser as a nonresonant light source for excited-state four-wave mixing and a 488-nm Ar+ laser as a preexcited light source to enhance the excited-state absorption. To explain the experimental results, we propose a four-level model for the azo-molecule system. The steady state and dynamic behavior of phase conjugation signal in four-wave mixing are simulated by solving rate equations. The theoretical simulations, which are in accord with the experimental results, show that using the preexcited method, four-wave mixing holography storage can be realized by using a weak laser beam with a nonresonant wavelength based on the excited-state process. Abstract:Stimuli-responsive fluorescent materials that can alternate their emission states on-demand are always desired in many applications. In this study, novel photoswitchable multistate fluorescent polymer (PMFP) was prepared via simple free-radical copolymerization of butyl acrylate (BA) and styrene (St) with two photochromic fluorescent monomers, i.e. sulfonyl diarylethylene-linked 4-hydroxybutyl acrylate (SDTE) and spiropyran-linked methacrylate (SP8). The PMFP displays excellent processability, due to its rational feed ratio of BA and St which result in the relative low glass transition temperature. By changing irradiation light, the non-fluorescent ring-closed spiropyran units and ring-opened diarylethylene moieties in PMFP can be selectively converted into their corresponding luminescence states. Furthermore, as a result of the controllable fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) from the excited diarylethylene to the spiropyran moieties, the emission of the polymer in solution or film can be reversibly switched among distinguishable no-emission, red, and green fluorescence states. Moreover, the PMFP exhibits high brightness, high contrast, rapid photoresponse, and excellent photo-reversibility. We also demonstrated that PMFP can be directly used for advanced high-density data storage, multilevel information encryption, and multicolor photorewritable pattern, as well as high-level anticounterfeiting.
