Abstract:An analysis of the power system voltage stability based on the bifurcation theory is presented. Two basic lemmas are given and on this basis a criterion theorem is derived, which is used to determined the bifurcation domain of power system voltage instability following the change of parameters in large region. The effect of the static characteristics of typical loads on the power system voltage stability is analyzed theoretically. Some new viewpoints are also given.

Abstract:The development of bifurcation is reviewed and the research status of bifurcation phenomena in DC-DC converter is summarized.The paper also introduces the basic theory of static bifurcation and dynamic bifurcation and three modeling methods in common use: the state-space average method,the frequency mapping method and the sampled-data method.The sampled-data method is more systematic and more accurate than the others.Finally,the simulation and experiment of an example explain the validity of the above modeling methods.

Abstract:There are kinds of nonlinear phenomena in DC-DC converters,and the appearance of bifurcation implies that the DC-DC converter is unstable. To study the bifurcation phenomena,a precise sampled-data model for DC-DC converters was set up in the first step,then formulae for bifurcation simulation were derived,at last,a buck converter was studied as an example. Observing bifurcation phenomena under different circuit parameters in simulation and experiment will help us to determine the stable values.

Abstract:Bifurcation analysis is performed on a typical power system model with both the active and reactive power (P and Q) demands at load bus chosen as parameters. Curves of saddle-node bifurcation (SNB) and Hopf bifurcation (HB) in parameter space are calculated, which show that a HB point will be reached before a SNB point with the increase in the demand of reactive power at low active power loading level. As a result, the system will exhibit oscillation and lose its stability induced by HB. A further increase in active power load demand, the two branches of HB curve will join together and arrive at the extremum point. After the extremum point, HB points disappear and voltage collapse will happen at the SNB point. Lyapunov exponents are calculated to obtain stability property in parameter space, the P-Q plane. Results show that SNB curve is the approximate boundary of stable and unstable regions, and the region compassed by HB curves has very complex structure. Considering the effect of load modeling on voltage stability, it is not proper to take into account only the existence of solutions of power flow equations, but the physical mechanism and control strategies of Hopf bifurcation are worthy of further studies. Abstract:By using the bifurcation theory, in the static range, the influence of the action of on-load tap change (OLTC) on the voltage stability was discussed. The analysis demonstrates clearly that the migrating direction, final position of voltage instability static-bifurcation curve and regulating voltage effect are affected by OLTC action with different type load models. In some load region, the complicated phenomenon of mix regulating voltage effect was discovered.

Abstract:This paper discusses the Hopf bifurcation control problems in a multi-parameter space of power systems by taking power loads as parameters.In power systems,the power load's variation and the control decision-making and implementation process,such as capacitor switching,are implemented at different time scales.The former is a quite slow process,and the latter can be implemented in a short time.So,in general,the loads cannot change remarkably during the control decision-making process.Based on the above fact,this paper proposes an on-line method to control Hopf bifurcations in power systems.The principle of the proposed method is:When the equilibrium(or operating)point is closing to the Hopf bifurcation surface,the approximate normal vector of the bifurcation surface corresponding to the current equilibrium point is calculated directly,and then the controlling parameters are regulated according to the approximate normal vector to avoid a Hopf bifurcation in a multi-machine power system.At last,the validity of the method is demonstrated on a numerical example of a 14-bus power system.

Abstract:Through investigating equilibrium points of a typical power system, this paper shows that voltage stability and angle stability can be linked by the unstable equilibrium points (UEPs) of the system. The unstable mode changes with the power flow mode of the system. The lower part and the other branch of the PV curve contain abundant information about system bifurcating, from which the situation of the UEPs can be learned. The analyzed results indicate that different load model can lead to different system unstable mode. The conclusions are general, and provide deeper understanding of the relationship between voltage stability and angle stability in complex power systems.

Abstract:In this paper a tutorial introduction to bifuration theory and the applicability of this theory to study SSR phenomenon in power system are explored. The continuation and bifurcation software AUTO97 is applied to investigate the SSR in a Single-Machine-Infinite- Busbar power system with series capacitor compensation. The results show that the mechanism of SSR is the result of unstable limit cycle after bifurcation. When the system exhibits SSR, some complex period orbit bifurcations, such as torus bifurcation and period fold bifurcation, maybe happen with the variation of limit cycle. The time-domain simulation results validate the effectiveness of bifurcation analysis.

Abstract:This paper discusses the on-line control of Hopf bifurcations in multiple-parameter space of loads in power systems. In power systems, the variation process of loads and the control decision-making process are at different time scales. The former is slowly, compared with the latter. So, in general, the loads should not change remarkably during the control decision-making process. Based on the above fact, this paper proposes an on-line method to control Hopf bifurcations in power systems. The method involves the process as follows. Firstly, monitor Hopf bifurcations by computing the eigenvalues of the Jacobian matrix of power systems at the current equilibrium point. If there is a pair of conjugate eigenvalues close to the imaginary axis, then use the pair of conjugate eigenvalues to compute the approximate normal vector to the Hopf bifurcation set. Finally, regulate control parameters to avoid a Hopf bifurcation in multi-machine power systems described by DAEs (differential algebraic equations). The validity of the method is demonstrated by regulating the reactive power loads in a 14-bus power system.

Abstract:Based on the bifurcation, topology theory and induced vector field conception, a new algorithm was formed. It can accomplish tracing the equilibrium solution manifold, search for the static bifurcation points and distinguishing their types in a large region with controllable steps. It can determine the direction of new branch at the bifurcation point too. The effect of the static characteristics of typical loads on the voltage stability was studied by means of this new algorithm. The PV curves of bulk power system and critical parameters can be obtained by means of this new algorithm.

Abstract:A simple model described by an autonomous continuous delayed differential equation with one variable, proposed by Uçar, is considered in this paper. We will show that Hopf bifurcations occur in this simple system. The stability of bifurcating periodic solutions and the direction of Hopf bifurcations are determined by applying the normal form theory and the center manifold theorem. Finally, a numerical example is given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the theoretical analysis.

Abstract:For the actuality that Differential-Algebraic Hybrid System (DAHS), whose subsystem is modeled by differential-algebraic equations, are seldom focused on by researchers at present but are important to direct the correlative research, a framework of stability theory including the definition of stability and (globally) asymptotic stability was put forward based on the model of DAHS. And the sufficient conditions to test for stability and asymptotic stability were achieved in the case of arbitrary switching and slow switching by Single Lyapunov Function (SLF) and Multiple Lyapunov Functions (MLF). For DAHS composed of only linear differential-algebraic subsystems, the switching law was presented to stabilize the whole system globally. The simulation results of a numerical example, in which the hybrid system composes of two linear differential-algebraic subsystems,are also investigated to show the feasibility and the effectiveness of the switching law. Analysis of power system showed that its voltage stability has the typical characteristics of hybrid system. However, the power subsystems cannot be described by pure Ordinary Differential Equation (ODE) but by Differential Algebraic Equation (DAE). Therefore, voltage stability boils down to the stability problem of Differential Algebraic Hybrid System (DAHS). In this paper, the power system model was used to degine the general form of DAHS ,then the stability theory framework was presented for the first time. The results of stable and asymptotically stable voltage were educed using Lyapunov's direct method. In the end, the simulation results showed that the stability theory results presented in this paper, can be successfully used for analysis of voltage stability. Then a novel tool is presented for research of voltage stability. The subsystem of hybrid system was modeled by differential-algebraic equations and pure differential equations. This class of hybrid systems, which was defined as differential-algebraic hybrid system (DAHS), was seldom researched at present. Abstract:In this note, we have derived stability for arbitrary switching about absolutely stable subsystem and the stability problem has derived stability for arbitrary switching above all. In the next place we analyze detailed stability for the dwell time switching. In the end, we discuss that the switched system exist stable convex combination switching. At last, we give several numerical results are given to illustrate our derived results.

Abstract:A general nonlinear model of disease spreading is proposed, describing the effect of the new link-adding probability p in the topological transition of the N-W small-world network model. The new nonlinear model covers both limiting cases of regular lattices and random networks, and presents a more flexible internal nonlinear interaction than a previous model. Hopf bifurcation is proved to exist during disease spreading in all typical cases of regular lattices, small-world networks, and random networks described by this model. It is shown that probability p not only determines the topological transition of the N-W small-world network model, but also dominates the stability of the local equilibria and bifurcating periodic solutions, and moreover can be further applied to stabilize a periodic spreading behaviour onto a stable equilibrium over the network.

Abstract:Highly interconnected power grid is developing more and more complex. Cascading failure in such complex power grid, which can be triggered by some disturbances, will have global catastrophic effects over the entire networks. So the research on cascading failure of complex power grid is of significant concern. The foundation of such research is the modeling. In this paper, the mechanism of cascading failure in power grid is firstly explained. Then respectively from the point of view in artificial power system and complex network, several existing models are introduced and commented. And some feasible methods, which should be paid more attention to in the future, in order to prevent and control cascading failure are also analyzed and discussed. © 2005 IEEE.

Abstract:The singularity in power system differential-algebraic model is related to transient voltage stability in the paper. By using a type of dynamic load model instead of static load model, the singularity in DAE is eliminated. Case studies in two-generator single-load three-bus system and New England 39-bus system proved that the system state near singular point has the characteristic of transient voltage collapse. Hence, the singularity of the differential-algebraic model can act as a kind of mechanisms for transient voltage collapse. The influences of time constant in dynamic load model, load power and load constitution on transient voltage stability are also studied. The results indicate that the power system with the load having the constant power and constant current load characteristics and quick response ability is prone to voltage collapse under the heavy load conditions. The above conclusions are helpful for the studies of transient voltage collapse mechanism, relationship between voltage stability and angle stability, theory and simulation methods for power system differential-algebraic model.

Abstract:In order to address the long-term voltage instability problems in power systems, this paper proposed a voltage stability assessment and prediction method based on the critical transition theory. In this paper, it is proven rigorously that as the system approaches the collapse point, the system nonlinearity will dominate so that the variance of the deviation will increase dramatically. In addition, this paper has derived the relationship between the variance and the bifurcation parameter to make the collapse point forecasting possible. This paper has also found the consistency between the proposed method and the largely used eigen-analysis method. The simulation results on a two machines three buses and a ten machines thirty-nine buses power system model have verified the derivation. The method is totally based on measured data so thatit is relatively quick and has the potential to be implemented in real world applications since the real power system model is unavailable or the parameter is inaccurate.
