Abstract:In the digital real-time simulation of the power system the multi-modules parallel processing technique has been extensively employed. The paper presents a coupled model between modules of the normal operation of the power system and its digital integration method. With this model and method, the digital real-time simulation of a concrete instance is realized by PentiumⅢ. The result of the simulation shows that the model is correct and the digital integral method is suitable for real-time simulation.

Abstract:The power simulation covers all stages of development and operation of a power system, such as planning, design and also operation. This includes simulating dynamic behaviors of very large power systems with HVDC and FACTS, and verifying performances of these complex systems with the original control and protection equipment in a fast and accurate manner. In this paper, features and engineering applications of the simulation program system NETOMAC are introduced. With practical examples, benefits of the computer simulation for planning, design and operation of power systems are demonstrated.

Abstract:The electromagnetic-circuital-thermal co-simulation method is introduced for integrated circuits and microwave applications. The time domain numerical method is adopted for electromagnetic and thermal simulation. The equivalent circuit model, equivalent physical model and the behavior macromodel are utilized for circuit modeling. Coupling interfaces are constructed for electromagnetic-circuital-thermal co-simulation. Numerical examples are given to validate the proposed method.

Abstract:In power system hybrid simulation, the mutual influence between the electromechanical transient process and electromagnetic transient process can be synthetically considered. The routine system can be simulated in the electromechanical mode while the other local network or special component in the electromagnetic mode and it provides a new solution to the study of transient stability and dynamic characteristic of the large-scale power system. Based on the self-developed electromechanical and electromagnetic transient simulation programs and the specific interface algorithm, the platform for power system hybrid simulation is designed and implemented, in which a new data exchange sequence method and correlative data communication and synchronization algorithm are also put forward. As its source code is transparent, controllable and expandable, the flexibility and efficiency are improved. The simulation results show the feasibility of the scheme and correctness of the interface algorithm.

Abstract:The tremendous developments of power systems bring new challenge to the simulation technology and conventional transient simulation cannot meet the analytical needs of practical large-scale power systems.Combining the advantages of electromagnetic and electromechanical transient simulations, experts and scholars have proposed the hybrid simulation technology.This paper gives an overview on the research and development of the hybrid simulation at home and abroad.Then two fundamental requirements for engineering applications are specified and several essential difficulties are described,including the system segmentation scheme,the boundary condition for the calculation of one side and equivalence of the other side,and the interactive order of two sides during the system fault.Based on the analysis of these difficulties,a forecast and correction method is proposed,with its feasibility expounded.Finally,the paper makes a simple comment on the development trends of the hybrid simulation.

Abstract:The present state of the electromagnetic transient simulation and electromechanical transient simulation in power system was particularly introduced. By comparing two kinds of simulations, the purpose of hybrid simulation in modern power systems was explained. Two implementation schemes for hybrid simulation were discussed, and the test result for response time of data exchange between embedded real-time operation system and RTDS was given. In the end, some key technical issues concerning hybrid simulation were discussed and corresponding solutions were put forward.

Abstract:As wide-area measurements and control techniques are being developed and deployed for a more resilient power system; the modern power grid is strongly integrated with its communication network. By combining power systems with communication network simulator, co-simulation technique or platform enables the simulations of electric power systems in which communication network properties can be taken into account. In this study, a real-time hybrid simulation platform is proposed and implemented, which can be used to implement electromechanical transient real-time electric power simulation of a large-scale power system and emulate the measurement, control and communication process of wide-area power grids. Applications to study the phasor measurement unit measurement error and wide-area monitor and control are presented, which further illustrates the important role of this platform in power system simulation and analyses.

Abstract:MATPOWER is an open-source Matlab-based power system simulation package that provides a high-level set of power flow, optimal power flow (OPF), and other tools targeted toward researchers, educators, and students. The OPF architecture is designed to be extensible, making it easy to add user-defined variables, costs, and constraints to the standard OPF problem. This paper presents the details of the network modeling and problem formulations used by MATPOWER, including its extensible OPF architecture. This structure is used internally to implement several extensions to the standard OPF problem, including piece-wise linear cost functions, dispatchable loads, generator capability curves, and branch angle difference limits. Simulation results are presented for a number of test cases comparing the performance of several available OPF solvers and demonstrating MATPOWER's ability to solve large-scale AC and DC OPF problems.

Abstract:In the construction process of the new power system, the proportion of nonsynchronous-machine sources are increasing, posing challenges to the system simulation. To fill the gap in universal simulation tools for diverse nonsynchronous-machine sources, this paper studies the electromechanical transient modeling of these sources. Firstly, universal control structures of grid-following (GFL) sources and grid-forming (GFM) sources are given, which can reflect the characteristics and control modes of grid-connected converters. Secondly, the steady-state models and power flow calculation method of these sources are introduced. Thirdly, based on the dynamic characteristics, universal electromechanical transient models of GFL sources and GFM sources are proposed and implemented in PSS/E. Finally, in two test systems, the electromechanical transient simulations in PSS/E and the electromagnetic transient simulations in PSCAD are conducted, where the results verify the accuracy and validity of the proposed electromechanical transient models. Especially, the dynamic performance improvement of GFM sources after using a modified AC voltage controller is discussed.

Abstract:Traditional dynamic security assessment faces challenges as power systems are experiencing a transformation to inverter-based-resource (IBR) dominated systems, for which electromagnetic transient (EMT) dynamics have to be considered. However, EMT simulation is time-consuming especially for a large power grid because the mathematical model based on detailed component modeling is highly stiff and needs to be integrated at tiny time steps due to numerical stability. This paper proposes a heterogeneous multiscale method (HMM) to address the simulation of a power system considering EMT dynamics as a multiscale problem. The method aims to accurately simulate the macroscopic dynamics of the system even when EMT dynamics are dominating. By force estimation using a kernel function, the proposed method automatically generates a macro model on the fly of simulation based on the micro model of EMT dynamics. It can flexibly switch between the micro- and macro-models to capture important EMT dynamics during some time intervals while skipping over other time intervals of less interest to achieve a superior simulation speed. The method is illustrated by a case study on a two-machine EMT model to demonstrate its potential for power system simulation.

Abstract:Power system transient simulation is an important approach to study the system's dynamic behaviors and guide its daily operation schedule. It can be classified into the following two categories based on the different scales of time step: electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulation and transient stability analysis (TSA). EMT has time step in microseconds, uses instantaneous value of electrical variables, and studies the transient phenomena caused by the interaction between electrical and magnetic fields. EMT is able to present the detailed switch process of power electronic devices in HVDC, achieving very accurate simulation. However, generally it is not suitable for large-scale system simulation because of its large computational burden due to complicated model and small time step. EMT is commonly used in detailed study of HVDC system in a relatively small scale. Currently there are several commercial EMT tools, such as PSCAD/EMTDC, EMTP, MATLAB®/Simulink®, Real Time Digital Simulator (RTDS), HYPERSIM, and RT-LAB. Particularly, some EMT tools can achieve the so-called real-time simulation, such as RTDS, by parallel computation hardware. This capacity makes it possible to connect real control/protect devices via power amplifiers, implementing hardware in loop simulation, which is quite valuable for in-factory tests.

Abstract:This paper presents the design of InterPSS simulation engine, including its object model, open software architecture, and software development process. Several advanced applications, including an integrated transmission and distribution co-simulation, an electromagnetic transient and phasor domain hybrid simulation, and InterPSS integration with a market simulator, have been developed by either extending InterPSS simulation engine or integrating it with other programs and/or platforms. These advanced applications show that the open architecture combined with the comprehensive modeling and simulation capabilities make InterPSS a very attractive option for the research and the future new power system simulation application development.

Abstract:With the integration of numerous complex electrical devices, the increasing complexity of China's power grid has great influence on power flow calculation. In this work, a general transient model integrated power flow (TMIPF) method for complex systems is proposed, which solves the steady-state model and complex transient model by conventional power flow method and simulation method respectively, and adopts the Thevenin equivalence and fixed-point iteration to provide the power flow of the entire complex system. Then, the TMIPF results are utilized to initialize the hybrid AC-DC system electromagnetic transient (EMT) model, and the hybrid AC-DC system EMT model combining IEEE 39-bus system with the CIGRE HVDC system is built on the CloudPSS platform. Test results indicate the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed TMIPF method, and validate the feasibility of TMIPF’s application in EMT simulation initialization.

Abstract:The analysis and simulation of power system are becoming more and more challenging as the complexity of system topology and components has been increased. In this paper, a hybrid parallel algorithm is proposed for the real-time electromagnetic transient simulation (EMTS) of integrated power systems containing multiphase machines. The proposed algorithm is composed of a novel network partition method called component level parallelization and the Multi-Area Thevenin Equivalent (MATE) method, which extends the flexibility of the network partition in parallel simulation. Moreover, several methods are developed to enhance the efficiency of the communication and computation. Power systems with up to 410 single-phase electrical nodes and 336 switches are simulated in a time step of 50 μs to validate the proposed algorithm.
An Extension Method of Common Information Model Oriented to Heterogeneity of Electric Power Simulation System

Abstract:According to the element class and its topological relation related to power system simulation in common information model (CIM), the deficiencies of CIM in modeling and application of electromechanical transient analysis are analyzed. The attributes of synchronous machine class and energy consumer class, which are for load modeling, are extended; and based on the definition of IEEE standard excitation system, an excitation model class are newly built. A simulation information exchange and test is designed and implemented. Combining with BPA and PSS/E simulation software commonly applied in China, a test environment is constructed and the simulation test is carried out by use of New England 10-machine 39-bus system. Testing results verify the effectiveness of model extension.

Abstract:Multi energy flow coupled network computing provides the constraints of network balance and system energy security for optimal operation of regional integrated energy system, and it is also an important basis for the system security and stability analysis. Considering the dynamic response characteristics of multi energy coupling system with multiple time scales, the network model for combined calculation of electric, gas, thermal / cold multi energy flow is constructed from two aspects of steady state and dynamic in this article. Furthermore, in the process of dynamic model solving, for improving the computational efficiency without affecting the simulation accuracy, the hybrid step time domain simulation method with electromechanical transient simulation for electric power system and medium-long term transient simulation for non-electrical system is proposed, and this method can effectively support the network computation of the multi-energy coupling system. Finally, the model and algorithm are verified by building an example of an electro-thermal coupling network and carrying the simulating.

Abstract:This paper presents a simplified combined-cycle power plant module for use in a real-time power system simulation.The module was combined with a power network system model in a simulation using the commercial simulation software Netomac to study dynamic system characteristics and enhance system security and stability.A PID controller was used to improve the system stability.The simulation of a two-region power system is very effective and shows that the PID controller is needed to enhance the system stability.

Abstract:Conventional electromechanical transient or electromagnetic transient simulators each have their disadvantages and limitations in simulating increasingly large-scale power systems. It is shown that by combining two kinds of simulators to make hybrid simulation, the scale, velocity and precision of calculation can be improved. It also provides a new solution for research on power system transient stability and dynamic characteristics. The key algorithm for dealing with the interface in hybrid simulation is presented in this paper. The solution to equivalent parameter and method of equivalent circuit for two kinds of simulators are discussed. In particular, a new method is presented for solving the equivalent fundamental frequency complex impedance according to the existing post-difference nodal admittance real matrix. In addition, the problem about asymmetric impedance matrix in electromechanical transient simulators and fundamental extraction in electromagnetic transient simulators are also discussed and analyzed at length, providing the specific scheme of implementation and laying a solid theoretical foundation for program design of the hybrid simulation system.
