Abstract:Praseodymium beta-diketone chelate, Pr(DPM)(3) [DPM = 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-3,5-heptanedionato], was successfully synthesized from the inorganic salt prascodymium chloride and HDPM(2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-3,5-heptane-dione) in an ethanol/aqueous solution followed distillation at low pressure and recrystallization from toluene. The physical and thermal properties of the chelate, including volatility, stability, and thermal decomposition, were investigated by elemental analyses, H-1 NMR spectroscopy, XRD, TG/DTG/DTA analysis, infrared spectroscopy, and mass spectroscopy. The chelate with high purity prepared by the authors of this study also shows sufficient volatility and stability in inert gases, which could be used as the precursor for metal-organic chemical vapor deposition(MOCVD).

Abstract:We report on resonant x-ray powder-diffraction measurements in the vicinity of the Pr ${L}_{3}$ absorption edge of ${\mathrm{Pr}}_{1+x}{\mathrm{Ba}}_{2\ensuremath{-}x}{\mathrm{Cu}}_{3}{\mathrm{O}}_{7\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\delta}}.$ The Pr site occupation has been accurately determined: $6\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}2%$ of the Pr is on the Ba site. From an analysis of the energy dependence of selected Bragg reflections, the site-specific oxidation state of Pr has been obtained. These results are discussed in the context of models describing the suppression of superconductivity by Pr, and they indicate that Pr on the R site is responsible for ${T}_{c}$ suppression.

Abstract:The Pr (TTA)(3) phen (C2H5OH) quarternary complex with 2-thenoyltrifluoro-acetone (TTA), 1, 10-phenanthroline (phen) and ethanol were synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The central Pr3+ ion is nine-coordinated. The infrared (IR) spectrum, diffuse reflectance (DR) spectrum and fluorescence measurements of the complex were investigated.

Abstract:The pentavalent oxidation state of praseodymium – a long-sought connection between lanthanide, early-transition, and actinide metal redox chemistries – has only been identified in gas-phase or matrix isolation environments. We report the low-temperature characterization of a molecular praseodymium complex in the formal +5 oxidation state, [Pr5+(NP(tBu3)4][X–] (where tBu = tert-butyl and X– = tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)borate or hexafluorophosphate). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction, solution-state spectroscopic, solution magnetometric, density functional theory, and multireference wavefunction-based methods indicate a highly multiconfigurational, singlet ground state. An inverted ligand field drives this unique electronic structure, which establishes a critical link in understanding the bonding of high-valent metal complexes across the periodic table.

Abstract:A new tetrakis praseodymium(tu) complex Pr(TFNB)(3)Phen has been synthesized, in which TFNB is 4,4,4-trifluoro-1-(2-naphthyl)-1,3-butanedione and Phen is 1,10-phenanthroline. Its crystal structure and luminescent spectra were successfully determined and investigated. The typical antenna effect existing in the luminescence of Pr(TFNB)(3)Phen was revealed by the study of the UV-Vis absorption spectra of ligands and the excitation spectrum of Pr(TFNB)(3)Phen.

Abstract:A novel polymeric Pr(III) complex with a new double betaine, namely [{Pr(L 1 ) 1.5 (H 2 O) 2 } n ][ClOli4]3 n · n H 2 O ( 1 ) (L 1 = 1,4-diazoniobicyclo[2,2,2]octane-1,4-dipropionate), has been synthesized and characterized by X-ray analysis. In the title complex, the Pr(III) atom is nine-coordinated by seven oxygen atoms from five L 1 ligands and two aqua ligands. Each pair of adjacent praseodymium(III) atoms is linked by a pair of μ 3 chelating and bridging carboxylate groups, thus forming an infinite metal···metal chain running parallel to the a direction, and such chains are cross-linked by flexible backbones of L 1 ligands into a three-dimensional network with the perchlorate anions and lattice water molecules accommodated in the interstitial space. The title complex crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P 2 1 / n with a = 8.085(2), b = 14.316(3), c = 29.775(6) Å, β = 103.04(3)° and Z = 4.

Abstract:The reaction of praseodymium(III) trichloroacetate with 1,10-phenanthroline (phen), acetic acid and 8-hydroxyquinoline gives the title centrosymmetric complex, [Pr2(C2Cl3O2)4(C2H3O2)2(C12H8N2)2(H2O)2]·2C3H7NO. The geometry around the PrIII ion corresponds to a monocapped square antiprism. Interestingly, the carboxylate groups coordinate in three different modes, viz. monodentate, bridging and bridging–chelating. In the crystal structure, there are weak intermolecular Cl⋯Cl and π–π-stacking interactions.

Abstract:The dinuclear complexes of 1,5-bis(1′-phenyl-3'-methyl-5'-pyrazolone-4')-l,5-pentanedione (H2L) with samarium, Sm2LL3 · 7H2OO (1) and Sm2LL3,, · 5DMF (2), have been synthesized. The X-ray crystal structure of Sm2LL3 · 5DMF has been determined. In complex 2. each L bonds two samarium atoms with its two ;-diketona-diketonate groups. The L acts as a bridging ligand. There are two DMF molecules bonded to each samarium atom. The coordination number of the two samarium atoms is eight (six oxygen atoms from three B--diketonates and the other two oxygen atoms from two DMF carbonyls). The eight atoms around the samarium make up a distorted square antiprism configuration. There are large differences between coordinated and uncoordinated DMF molecules.

Abstract:The title complexes, K-6[Pr-III(ttha)](2)(.)10H(2)O and K-4[Sm-2(III)(Httha)(2)](.)14H(2)O (H6ttha = triethylenetetraaminehexaacetic acid), have been prepared and characterized using IR, elemental analyses and single-crystal X-ray diffraction techniques. The crystal of K-6[Pr-III(ttha)](2)(.)10H(2)O has a ten-coordinate mononuclear structure with a distorted bicapped square antiprismatic prism, belonging to the triclinic crystal system and P1 1 space group. The crystal data are as follows: a = 9.697(4)angstrom, b = 16.183(6)angstrom, c = 20.957(8)angstrom, V = 2963.0(19)angstrom(3), Z = 2. The crystal of K-4[Sm-2(III)(Httha)(2)](.)14H(2)O belongs to the monoclinic crystal system and P21/n space group, with a = 11.2787(10)angstrom, b = 25.706(2)angstrom, c = 22.058(2)angstrom, V = 6231.5(10)A(3), Z = 4, and is a binuclear nine-coordinate pseudo-monocapped square antiprism. The results provide the dividing point of nine-coordinate and ten-coordinate rare earth complexes with ttha ligand.

Abstract:The imidophosphorane ligand, [NPtBu3]– (tBu = tert-butyl), enables isolation of a pseudo-tetrahedral, tetravalent praseodymium complex, [Pr4+(NPtBu3)4] (1-Pr), which is characterized by a suite of physical characterization methods including single-crystal X-ray diffraction, electron paramagnetic resonance, and L3-edge X-ray near-edge spectroscopies. Variable-temperature direct-current magnetic susceptibility data, supported by multiconfigurational quantum chemical calculations, demonstrate that the electronic structure diverges from the isoelectronic Ce3+ analogue, driven by increased crystal field. The four-coordinate environment around Pr4+ in 1-Pr, which is unparalleled in reported extended solid systems, provides a unique opportunity to study the interplay between crystal field splitting and spin-orbit coupling in a molecular tetravalent lanthanide within a pseudo-tetrahedral coordination geometry.

Abstract:A mixed ligand complex of l-phenyl-3-methyl-4-trifluoroacetyl pyrazolone-5 (HPMTFP) and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) with neodymium having molecular formula Nd(PMTFP)3 · 2DMSO has been synthesized. Its crystal and molecular structures have been determined by a four-circle X-ray diffractometer. The complex crystallizes in monoclinic with space group P 21/n. a = 21.897 (4), b = 23.339 (4), c = 8.958 (2)Å, β = 96.61 (3)°, Z = 4. The Nd atom is coordinated by eight oxygen atoms, which takes a distorted delta dodecahedron arrangement around the central Nd atom. The average bond length of Nd—O is 2.45 Å. The IR spectra have been discussed as well.

Abstract:The complex CpYCl2(THF)3 (Cp  C5H5) was obtained by reacting YCl3 with sodium and cyclopentadiene (1:1:5 molar ratio) in THF at room temperature, which has been studied by X-ray crystallography. The complex is monomeric with the ytrium atom coordinated by one Cp ring centroid, three oxygen atoms from three THF molcecules and two chloride atoms to give rise to a distorted octahedral coordination. The YC(Cp) bond lengths range from 2.59(3) to 2.73(4) Å and average 2.65(3) Å. The THF molecules coordinate to the yttrium atom with YO distances of 2.34(2), 2.35(2), 2.35(2) and 2.50(2) Å, respectively. The YCl bond lengths are 2.630(8) and 2.625(7) Å, respectively. Some significant parameters of the title complex have been compared with the corresponding values of the known isostructural organolanthanide complexes of Nd, Gd, Ho, Er and Yb.

Abstract:The complex Sc(PMTEP)3(Ph3PO) has been synthesized, where HPMTEP is 1-phenyl-3-methyl-4-trifluoroacetyl-pyrazolone-5 and Ph3PO is triphenylphosphine oxide. Its crystal structure has been determined with a four-circle X-ray diffractometer. The crystal is triclinic with space group Pl. The cell parameters are as follows: a=1.8462(9) nm; b=1.2891(7) nm, c=1.2772(8) nm; ��=64.26(4)��, ��=101.44(6)��, ��=83.66(6)��; V=2.613(3) nm3, Z=2, Dc=1.435 g/cm3. The scandium (III) ion is coordinated to seven oxygen atoms, six of which are from three bidentate ligand PMTFP and one from Ph3PO. The average bond length of seven Sc-O bonds is 0.215 nm. The coordination polyhedron takes a distorted mono-capped octahedron arrangement.
Limits of stability for compounds of pentavalent praseodymium

Abstract:Eleven possible candidates for compounds of pentavalent praseodymium were investigated with relativistic density functional theory using the B3LYP functional with ZORA scalar relativistic correction and including spin orbit coupling effects. Two of those candidates had previously been synthesized and another two of them were previously theoretically predicted. Three new species were proposed here as possible candidates for the compounds of Pr in its fifth oxidation state: PrF4+, PrO2F2- and PrOF2+. The main technical obstacle in synthesizing these ions is their high reactivity due to large electron affinity; decomposition via bimolecular reaction pathways and low energy of excitation to the triplet state constitute other stability limiting factors.

Abstract:The tris(2-methoxyethylcyclopentadienyl)lanthanide complexes [Ln(C(5)H(4)CH(2)CH(2)OMe)(3)] (Ln = La, Pr, Nd, Gd or Y) were synthesized by the reaction of sodium 2-methoxyethylcyclopentadienide with the corresponding LnCl(3) and the products were characterized by elemental analyses, mass, IR and H-1 NMR spectroscopy. Crystal structure determinations revealed the complexes to be unsolvated monomeric metallocenes with lanthanide centres co-ordinated by three cyclopentadienyl rings and two oxygen atoms of the three 2-methoxyethyl moieties present; the third oxygen is not co-ordinated. The distances Ln-C (eta(5)) and Ln-O(1) (co ordinated oxygen) decrease as the ionic radius decreases; however, Ln-O(3) (co-ordinated oxygen) increases.

Abstract:The hydrothermal reaction of 5-aminoisophthalic acid and praseodymium oxide in different acids results in two new praseodymium coordination polymers, [Pr-2(aiP)(3)(H2O)(2)center dot 3H(2)O}(n) (1) and {Pr-2(HaiP)(2)(aip)(NO3)(2)center dot 8H(2)O}(n) (2) (aip = 5-aminoisophthalate). Complexes 1 and 2 are two distinct three-dimensional metal-organic frameworks constructed from the linkage of rod-shaped praseodymium carboxylate secondary building units and phenyl rings. Both dehydrated coordination frameworks are estimated using a computational method based on Connolly's algorithm, indicating that dehydrated compound 1 cannot host molecules other than water molecules or He, whereas dehydrated compound 2 is able to host molecules with kinetic radii as big as 2.3 angstrom. The potential specific accessible surface of this compound is 792 m(2) g(-1). Meanwhile, N-2 sorption measurements reveal that dehydrated compound 2 having a high 230 cm(3)/g (287 mg/g) N-2 storage capacity at 77 K and 1 atm is in fairly good agreement with our calculation results. Moreover, powder X-ray diffraction measurement results demonstrated that the stable channels of dehydrated compound 2 can reversibly host other small solvent molecules (e.g., water, methanol, and ethanol) and grand canonical Monte Carlo simulation is applied to predict its hydrogen storage capacity.

Abstract:A new 3D bismuth ( III ) -praseodymium ( III ) heterometallic complex, ([( NO3) ( H2O)(3) Pr (mu(4) -Hedta) Bi(NO3)(2)]center dot 2H(2)O](2))(n) (edta = diaminetetraacecarboxylate), was synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, FTIR, and X-ray diffraction single crystal structure analysis. It crystallizes in the mono-clinic system, with space group P2(1)/n, a = 1.26831(18) nm, b =0.82189(12) nm, c =2. 3755(3)nm, beta = 105.055 (2)degrees, V = 2.3913 (6) nm(3), Z = 4. Bridging Hedta(3-) anions between Bi atoms and Pr atoms result into a novel infinite 3D network structure. TG-DSC results indicate that thermal decomposition proceeds in several stages, dehydration, pyrolysis of ligand, and finally decomposition of salt.

Abstract:Reactions of Ln(III) acetate (Ln = Pr and Nd) and a polydentate Schiff-base in a mixture of methanol and acetonitrile resulted in the unprecedented assembly of novel Ln(10) aggregates containing two Ln(5) pentagons templated by mu(5)-CO(3)(2-), introduced via spontaneous fixation of atmospheric carbon dioxide. Magnetic analysis using an expression including the ligand field effects and molecular field approximation indicates weak antiferromagnetic coupling between the metal ions. This synthetic approach may represent a promising new route toward the design of new lanthanide clusters and novel multifunctional materials.
