Abstract:A proton-conductive organic/inorganic hybrid complex {[Cu(H2O)8][H(H2O)3](HINO)4(PW12O40)}n, was constructed by a self-assembly of H+(H2O)3 clusters, [Cu(H2O)8]2+ clusters, [PW12O40]3− anions and isonicotinic acid N-oxide (HINO). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis at 293K revealed that the title complex presented exactly a three-dimensional (3D) hydrogen-bonded network with large one-dimensional (1D) channels. Interestingly, [PW12O40]3− anions just filled in the 1D channels and self-assembled into poly-Keggin-anion chains. Thermogravimetric analysis shows no weight loss in the temperature range of 20–100°C, indicating that all water molecules in the unit structure are not easily lost below 100°C. The title complex was characterized by a satisfactory ionic conductivity (1–2×10−3Scm−1) in the temperature range 85 to 100°C only. However, it is two orders of magnitude lower than that of Nafion membrane. A possible mechanism of the proton conduction was proposed according to the experimental results.

Abstract:Dendrimer complexes[(G-2)4P and (G-3)4P]with a porphyrin core have been prepared by self-assembling of sodium tetrakis(4-sulfonatophenyl) porphyrin with dendritic quaternary bromides (G-2 and G-3), which were synthesized by reaction of Frechet type dendritic bromides (G-2 and G-3) with triethylamine. The structure of dendrimer complexes was confirmed by 1H NMR and element analysis. The stoichiometry rate between the dendritic quaternary bromide and porphyrin core was 4:1. Solvatochromism studies of the dendritic complexes showed that the (G-3)4P dendritic complex is more stable than the (G-2)4P dendritic complex. It is inferred that hydrophobic interactions play an important role in stabilizing these dendrimer complexes in addition to coulombic interactions.

Abstract:Functional nanosized cage complexes with an octahedral framework have been synthesized by the facile self-assembly reactions of six 90 PdII-containing compounds {[Pd(dppf)(OTf)(2)] or [Pd(PPh3)(OTf)(2)], dppf = 1,1'-bis(diphenylphosphanyl) ferrocene, OTf = trifluoromethylsulfonate} and four 120 degrees functional tritopic ligands [2,4,6-tri(4-pyridyl)-1,3,5-triazine] in acetone. Diffusion-ordered NMR spectroscopy (DOSY) and AFM images clarify the formation of 3-4 nm nanoparticles. These highly symmetrical cage complexes are discrete, face-directed, functional nanoparticles with symmetrical octahedral structures. The self-assembled functional cage complexes exhibit interesting electrochemical activities, and thus will potentially be useful in the catalysis of redox reactions, the encapsulation of sizeable guest molecules and the control of organic synthetic reactions.

Abstract:Three novel series of amphiphiles based on poly(amidoamine) dendrons (from G1 to G3) and having different aromatic chromophores (Cz I, Cz II, and Py) at the focal point were synthesized and studied for their self-assembly behavior in aqueous solution by using electronic microscopies (i.e., SEM and TEM), UV–vis, fluorescence, IR, and 1H NMR spectroscopy. It was found that the generation of dendrons affected significantly the self-assembly of these amphiphiles in aqueous solution and the morphological structures of the resulting assemblies depended greatly on the architecture of the focal chromophores. As a result, the first generation of dendrons assembled readily into vesicles at low concentrations. These vesicular structures subsequently fused to form a stable tubular structure. Similar tubular structures could also be directly obtained through self-assembly of these amphiphilic dendrons at high concentrations. X-ray investigations showed that the resulting tubules possessed a lamellar structure. A head-to-head packing model of amphiphilic dendrons in the assemblies was proposed.

Abstract:In this work, a series of dendrimer functionalized ‘core-shell’ like oligo(phenyleneethynylene)s (OPEs) molecular wires have been reported. This new type of molecular wires could be well dissolved in common organic solvents, and form self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on gold surfaces. Electrochemical investigation shows that the density of the SAMs depends on the size of the dendrimer ‘shell’. UV–vis absorption spectra and fluorescence emission spectra indicate that little aggregations occur in the solutions. Complication due to π–π interactions between OPEs decreases with the increase of the size of the dendrimer ‘shell’.

Abstract:Dendrimers 1a–d were synthesized in 10 steps from dendrons 4–7, bromobenzene and succinic anhydride. Tetraacids 1e and 1f were prepared in an analogous fashion. The aggregation of 1a–f was studied in solution by size exclusion chromatography (SEC), vapor pressure osmometry (VPO), low angle laser light scattering (LLS), small angle neutron scattering (SANS), and by 1H NMR. The data are consistent with a stable, discrete hexameric aggregate for 1b–d in methylene chloride, non-discrete polymeric aggregates for 1a, 1e, and 1f, and monomers for all compounds in tetrahydrofuran and dimethyl sulfoxide. Kinetic and thermodynamic studies and mixing experiments confirmed the highly cooperative nature of the self-assembly process.
Aggregation of an anionic porphyrin with chiral metal complexes and the competitive binding influences of a surfactant and a polyelectrolyte

Abstract:The non-covalent interactions of chiral metal complexes with the achiral 5,10,15,20-tetrakis (4-sulonatophenyl) porphyrin (H4TTPS2-) have been investigated by UV-vis and circular dichroism (CD) spectra. The results show that under acidic environments, only the chiral complex cations ([CoBr(NH3)(en)(2)](+), [Co(en)(3)](3+), [Ru(phen)(3)](2+)) could interact with H4TTPS2- to form chiral aggregates, accompanied with the metal-centered chirality information transferred to the formed J-aggregates. However, the chiral complex anion ([Co(edta)](-)) does not cause the self-assembly process. The competitive binding interactions between an achiral water-soluble cationic surfactant (N-hexadecyltrimethyl ammonium chloride, CTAC) and a cationic polyelectrolyte (polyallylamine, PAA) with the chiral metal complex H4TTPS2- J-aggregates, respectively, were also investigated. It was found that chiral-symmetry-breaking phenomena occur in the cationic surfactant induced event. In the case of a cationic polyelectrolyte, it could change the conformational flexibility of the H4TTPS2- aggregates. These results may lead us to understand the possible mechanism of the supramolecular self-assembly process by the non-covalent interactions.

Abstract:Self-assembly of dendritic amphiphiles has attracted great attention due to their various applications in fundamental and practical areas. However, it still remains a great challenge to prepare dendritic amphiphiles with a facile protocol because of their complex molecular structures and tedious synthesis process. Herein, we develop a simple and straightforward strategy to construct dendritic amphiphiles with aggregation-induced emission characteristics by using tetraphenylethene derivatives as the bridge fragment. These dendritic amphiphiles can self-assemble into well-defined structures, and their supramolecular topological structures can be further transformed from spheres into other morphological structures, such as tubules and nanofibers, showing the diversiform self-assembly manipulated by the solvent effect. Furthermore, the supramolecular materials well performed as fluorescent photosensitizers for fluorescence image-guided photodynamic cancer therapy, ascribing to the high-performance fluorescence emission, good biocompatibility, and high electron donor–acceptor strength characteristics. This work provides a new way to construct functional dendritic amphiphiles and greatly broadens their applications in supramolecular chemistry and material science.

Abstract:Heterocyclic unit 2 containing complementary donor-donor-acceptor (DDA) and acceptor-acceptor-donor (AAD) hydrogen bonding arrays at an angle of about 601 Was designed to self-assemble into a hexamer. To investigate whether this unit could self-assemble dendrimers, the 2,8-diamino-2-N-ethylpyrimido-(4,5-b)(1, 8)naphthyridine-3H-4-one subunit was synthesized with a first (2a), second (2b), and third generation (2c) Frechet-type dendron attached to the 8-amino group. The synthesis of 2a-c was accomplished in 11 steps beginning with 2,6-diaminopyridine and the corresponding dendron bromide. Studies using H-1 NMR, size exclusion chromatography (SEC), and dynamic light scattering (DLS) support the cooperative formation of cyclic hexamers in apolar solvents. The stability of the self-assembled dendrimers is dependent on the size of the attached dendron, and mixing studies with 2a-c indicate their usefulness in constructing dynamic combinatorial libraries.

Abstract:Control of self-assembly is significant to the preparation of supramolecular materials and illustration of diversities in either natural or artificial systems. Supra-amphiphiles have remarkable advantages in the construction of nanostructures but control of shape and size of supramolecular nanostructures is still a great challenge. Here, we fabricate a series of supra-amphiphiles by utilizing the recognition motifs based on a heteroditopic porphyrin amphiphile and its zinc complex. These porphyrin amphiphiles can bind with a few guests including Cl – , coronene, C 60 , 4,4′-bipyridine and 2,4,6-tri(pyridin-4-yl)-1,3,5-triazine, which are further applied to facilitate the controllable self-assembly. Addition of these guests result in the formation of various supra-amphiphiles with well-defined structures, thus induce the generation of different aggregates. A diverse of aggregation morphologies including nanospheres, nanorods, films, spheric micelles, vesicles and macrowires are constructed upon the influence of specific complexation, which highlights the present work with abundant control on the shapes and dimensions of self-assemblies.

Abstract:The synthesis and structural analysis of supramolecular dendrimers self-assembled from 3 libraries containing 20 first-generation hybrid dendrons are reported. Combinations of benzyl ether, naphthyl methyl ether, and biphenyl methyl ether repeat units with different alkyl cartxmlates at the apex of the dendron decreased its molecular solid angle to values that led to the discovery of a new mechanism of self-assembly. This new self-assembly mechanism generated a diversity of unprecedented supramolecular assemblies, including hollow and nonhollow singly or doubly segregated supramolecular columns and vesicles exhibiting polyhedral shapes. The polyhedral shape of the self-organized supramolecular dendrimers was demonstrated to be an intrinsic characteristic of all the doubly segregated structures. The self-assembly mechanism elucidated here provides access to new strategies that will be used to fabricate complex supramolecular organizations.

Abstract:A self-assembly technique assisted with surfactant is developed to fabricate one-dimensional (1D) nanostructure of zinc meso-tetra (4-pyridyl) porphyrin. The so-prepared nanostructure appears in a shape of hollow hexagonal nanoprism with uniform size. The length and aspect ratio of the nanoprisms is easily tunable by controlling the stoichiometric ratio of porphyrin over surfactant. The internal structure of the nanoprisms is well described by XRD. Furthermore, as a result of dispersivity and regular geometric shape, these nanoprisms can readily self-organize into an ordered, smectic three-dimensional (3D) architecture through simple evaporation of the solvent. The results should be significant in porphyrin crystallization and porphyrin application in optoelectronic device, catalysis, drug delivery, and molecular filtration.

Abstract:The synthesis of 4'-hydroxy-4-biphenylpropionic, 3',4'-dihydroxy-4-biphenylpropionic, 3',5'-dihydroxy-4-biphenylpropionic, and 3',4',5'-trihydroxy-4-biphenylpropionic methyl esters via three efficient and modular strategies including one based on Ni-catalyzed borylation and sequential cross-coupling is reported. These building blocks were employed in a convergent iterative approach to the synthesis of one library of 3,4,5-trisubstituted and two libraries of constitutional isomeric 3,4- and 3,5-disubstituted biphenylpropyl ether dendrons. Structural and retrostructural analysis of supramolecular dendrimers revealed that biphenylpropyl ether dendrons self-assemble and self-organize into the same periodic lattices and quasi-periodic arrays observed in previously reported libraries, but with larger dimensions, different mechanisms of self-assembly, and improved solubility, thermal, acidic, and oxidative stability. The different mechanisms of self-assembly led to the discovery of two new supramolecular structures. The first represents a new banana-like lamellar crystal with a four layer repeat. The second is a giant vesicular sphere self-assembled from 770 dendrons that exhibits an ultrahigh molar mass of 1.73 x 10(6) g/mol. Thus, the enhanced size of the self-assembled structures constructed from biphenylpropyl ether dendrons permitted for the first time discrimination of various molecular mechanisms of spherical self-assembly and elaborated a continuum between small filled spheres and very large hollow spheres that is dictated by the primary structure of the dendron. The comparative analysis of libraries of biphenylpropyl ether dendrons with the previously reported libraries of benzyl-, phenylpropyl-, and biphenyl-4-methyl ether dendrons demonstrated biomimetic self-assembly wherein the primary structure of the dendron and to a lesser extent the structure of its repeat unit determines the supramolecular tertiary structure. A "nanoperiodic table" of self-assembling dendrons and supramolecular dendrimers that allows the prediction of the general features of tertiary structures from primary structures was elaborated.

Abstract:Chiral dendrimers are ideal building blocks for assembled functional materials as their versatility and diverse assembly behaviors, however the assembled nanostructures still hardly be accurately predicted and flexibly controlled. Here, we reported a controllable fantastic supramolecular self-assembly of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) based chiral dendrimer ( L -POSS), which could assemble into helical nano-fibers, nano-toroids and loofah-like superstructures as the regulated transfer and expression of chirality by solvents. Interestingly, the unique loofah-like network is constructed from the junction and loop of the helical nano-fibers as the advanced expressions of chirality, which have been proved by a designed disassembly process and a co-assembly with enantiomer D -POSS. After co-assembly with D -POSS, the transfer of chirality from dendrimer could be easily regulated by enantiomers with performed loofah-like structure or helical fibers disappeared and were replaced by the non-chiral nano-fibers as the assembly in a racemic state ( L -POSS and D -POSS are in equimolar). These new insights into the transfer and expression of the chirality from chiral dendrimers could inspire the design, regulation and application of chiral architectures by taking advantage of the controllable multifarious self-assembly from dendritic building blocks.

Abstract:Tree-shaped molecules consisting of octa-p-phenylene as a stem segment and oligoether dendrons as a flexible head were synthesized and characterized. The molecular tree based on a small flexible head self-assembles into a lamellar structure, whereas the molecule based on a larger headgroup self-assembles into a discrete heptameric bundle that organizes into a 3-D primitive orthorhombic supercrystals, as confirmed by X-ray scatterings and transmission electron microscopic (TEM) observations. Optical studies revealed that the absorption and emission maxima and absorption edge of the 3-D structure shift to higher energy compared to those of the lamellar structure. The molecules in dilute solution (THF/water = 1:10 v/v) were observed to self-assemble into capsule-like hollow aggregates, as confirmed by dynamic and static light scatterings, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and TEM investigations. These results demonstrate that tree-shaped molecules are capable of packing into organized discrete nanocrystals with parallel arrangement as well as hollow nanocapsules with radial arrangement, depending on the presence of selective solvents for flexible headgroup.

Abstract:The cooperative electrostatic attraction and pi-pi aromatic stacking interactions between tetrahedral tetrapyridinium TP and three tetraanionic tetraphenylethylene derivatives TPE-1 similar to 3 led to the formation of a new kind of supramolecular polymer networks in water, which have been confirmed by H-1 NMR, fluorescence, isothermal titration calorimetric (ITC) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) experiments. ITC studies show that the contributions of enthalpy and entropy were comparable, reflecting the importance of hydrophobicity in driving the intermolecular aromatic stacking. DLS experiments indicate that the linear supramolecular polymers formed by these tetratopic monomers further aggregated into networks of 10(2)-nm size. Discrete and Polymeric Self-Assembled Dendrimers: Hydrogen Bond-Mediated Assembly with High Stability and High Fidelity

Abstract:Hydrogen bond-mediated self-assembly is a powerful strategy for creating nanoscale structures. However, little is known about the fidelity of assembly processes that must occur when similar and potentially competing hydrogen-bonding motifs are present. Furthermore, there is a continuing need for new modules and strategies that can amplify the relatively weak strength of a hydrogen bond to give more stable assemblies. Herein we report quantitative complexation studies on a ureidodeazapterin-based module revealing an unprecedented stability for dimers of its self-complementary acceptoracceptor-donor-donor (AADD) array. Linking two such units together with a semirigid spacer that carries a first-, second-, or third-generation Fréchet-type dendron affords a ditopic structure programmed to self assemble. The specific structure that is formed depends both on the size of the dendron and the solvent, but all of the assemblies have exceptionally high stability. The largest discrete nanoscale assembly is a hexamer with a molecular mass of about 17.8 kDa. It is stabilized by 30 hydrogen bonds, including six AADD⋅DDAA contacts. The hexamer forms and is indefinitely stable in the presence of a hexamer containing six ADD⋅DAA hydrogen-bonding arrays.

Abstract:To understand the hierarchical self-organization behaviors of soft materials as well as their dependence on molecular geometry, a series of AB n dendron-like molecules based on polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) nanoparticles were designed and synthesized. The apex of these molecules is a hydrophilic POSS cage with 14 hydroxyl groups (denoted DPOSS). At its periphery, there are different numbers (n = 1-8) of hydrophobic POSS cages with seven isobutyl groups (denoted BPOSS), connected to the apical DPOSS via flexible dendron type linker(s). By varying the BPOSS number from one to seven, a supramolecular lattice formation sequence ranging from lamella (DPOSS-BPOSS), double gyroid (space group of Ia3̅d, DPOSS-BPOSS2), hexagonal cylinder (plane group of P6mm, DPOSS-BPOSS3), Frank-Kasper A15 (space group of Pm3̅n, DPOSS-BPOSS4, DPOSS-BPOSS5, and DPOSS-BPOSS6), to Frank-Kasper sigma (space group of P42/mnm, DPOSS-BPOSS7) phases can be observed. The nanostructure formations in this series of AB n dendron-like molecules are mainly directed by the molecular geometric shapes. Furthermore, within each spherical motif, the spherical core consists hydrophilic DPOSS cages with flexible linkages, while the hydrophobic BPOSS cages form the relative rigid shell, and contact with neighbors to provide decreased interfaces among the spherical motifs for constructing final polyhedral motifs in these Frank-Kasper lattices. This study provides the design principle of molecules with specific geometric shapes and functional groups to achieve anticipated structures and macroscopic properties.
Rationally Designed Syntheses and Self-Organized Superstructure Investigations of Liquid Crystalline Dendrimers

Abstract:Dendrimers or dendrons are ideal preorganized scaffolds for constructing novel liquid crystalline (LC) materials thanks to their perfect topologic structure and abundant reactive groups on the periphery. In this review, basically classified by the chemical construction of dendritic skeleton, mainly focusing on the polyamidoamine (PAMAM), polypropylene imine (PPI), polycarbosilane, polyether and polyester systems, the recent advances in the rationally designed syntheses and their self-organized superstructure of side-chain LC dendrimers have been summarized and commented. Recently the systematic investigations in the LC dendrimers have discovered plenty of novel LC mesophases and broadened the thermal LC concepts. It has been demonstrated that rich LC mesophases or even hierarchical superstructures can be achieved by tuning of the dendritic core chemical construction, dendrimer generation and the mesogenic units attached.
