Abstract:The aqueous complexation of lanthanide ions with citrate in pH 7.4 solution has been investigated with use of the lanthanide-induced shift and paramagnetic relaxation rate enhancement methods. The results show that the citrate coordinates via hydroxyl and central carboxylate groups with lanthanide ions and forms 1:2 (Ln/cit) isostructural complexes through the lanthanide series. A new possible coordination geometry deduced from our experimental data is suggested and discussed.

Abstract:The aqueous complexation of lanthanide complexes of citrate in pH 7.4 solutions has been studied by using lanthanide-induced shift and relaxation times measurement methods. These results indicate that citrate coordinate via 3-hydroxyl and 3-carboxylate groups with lanthanide ions and form 1:2(Ln/cit) isostructural complexes through lanthanide series. A Nmr Investigation on the Interaction of Lanthanide Complexes with Phospholipid Bilayers

Abstract:One and two dimentional NMR methods were used to investigate the interactions of lanthanide complexes (Lncit(2) and Ln-DTPA) with phospholipid bilayers, The results showed that in the phospholipid bilayers dispersion containing citrate ligand at pH 7.4, lanthanide ions would initially combine with citrate ligand and form Lncit, complexes which have little effect on the structure of phospholipid bilayers. Ln-DTPA complex does not affect the bilayers structure either. These results provided important experimental data for evaluating scientifically the toxicities of lanthanide ions when they were introduced into the biological body.

Abstract:The stability constants of Ln - L [Ln = La( III), Ce(III), Pr( III), Nd(III), Sm(III), Eu(III), Gd(III), Tb(III) , Dy(III), Ho(III), L = N, N' - dialkyl - 1,10 - phenanthroline - 2,9 - dimethanamine, in which alkyl group denotes -CH3, -CH2CH3, -(CH2)(2)CH3, -(CH2)(3)CH3, -CH(CH3)(2), -C(CH3)(3) ] binary complexes have been determined by pH potentiometric titration method at (25 +/- 0.1)degreesC, I= 0. 1 mol . dm(-3) NaClO4. The probable structures of the corresponding complexes were proposed. The influence of the metal ions and the substituents on the stability of binary complexes is reported in detail. The stability difference between the complexes of rare earth ion and the corresponding complexes of Cu(III) ion is also discussed. The stability constants of the corresponding binary complex of radioactive Pm(III) ion are estimated by linear regression.

Abstract:A spectrophotometer procedure using a colorimetric compliant has been used for the study of the complexation between lantbanides(Ⅲ) and B15-crown5(B15C5,A) in anhydrous alcohol.2-(2-Thiazolylazo)-4-methylphenol(TAC,L) was used as a colorimetric complexant because of its simple structure with which no protonated complexes may be formed.The conditional stability constants of the ~(3+) complexes(K_((LnL))',K_((LnL))) at constant acidity in the absence and the presence)of B15C5 were determined by monitoring the absorbance due to the ~(3+) complexes.The competition between TAC and B15C5 for the metal ion resulted in a decrease in K_((LnL)) with increasing B15C5 concentration.From the dependence of 1/K_((LnL)) on the concentration of B15C5 the stability constants of the ~(3+)complexes could be determined.The stability constants of theses complexes were found to decrease with increasing anomic number.On the basis of the complexation trend observed,B15C5 was used as competitive ligand to increase the selectivity of chelating agents.

Abstract:C-functionalized dioxotetraamine ligands L have been designed and synthesized through simple methods, and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, mass spectra and H-1 NMR. The ligand contains two independent chelating groups. At 25.0+/-0.1degreesC, I=0.1mol(.)dm(-3) NaNO3, pH titration has been performed to study the stability properties of L-5-R-5,10-phenanthroline-Cu(II) with proton, copper(H) and cobalt(II). The ternary complexes have been shown to possess interesting properties due to the involvement of three chelating groups, 5-substituted-1,10-phenanthroline, 8-hydroxyquinoline and dioxotetraamine. In addition, potentiometric titrations have been performed to study the protonation of L-5-R-1, 10-phenanthroline-Cu(II) (R=CH3,H,Cl,NO2) and their stability properties with copper(II) and cobalt(II). The results show that for Cu2+ and Co2+, 8-hydroxyquinoline is a strong chelating reagent than dioxytetraamine macrocycles. Using molecular mechanics (MM+) calculation, the stability of ternary mixed system on Co(II)-L-5-substituted-1, 10-phenanthroline-Cu(II) and Cu(II)-L-5-substituted-1,10-phenanthroline-Cu(II) have been studied and compared with the coordination ability for different coordination sites and for different metal ions (Co(II) and Cu(II)) at the same coordination site. The results obtained from calculation agree with the experimental results.

Abstract:Detailed information on the An(iii)/Ln(iii) complexation properties in solution is essential for separation chemistry and the prediction of their potential for radionuclide migration from nuclear waste repositories into natural aquifers. In the present study, to better reveal and confirm the structural information of [Eu(Ox)x (H2O)h-2x]3-2x (h = 8, 9; x = 0-3) aqueous species, especially the variable coordination number (CN), and explore the validity of the spectral linear correlation between the luminescence lifetime and the residual hydration number in the first coordination sphere of Eu(iii) compounds in solution, a comparison between the spectral results and the theoretical calculations in a wide parametric space in terms of the pH value and oxalate concentration was carried out by combining time-resolved luminescence spectroscopy (TRLS) with speciation modelling and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. We have found direct and clear evidence for the 9-fold to 8-fold coordination number reduction of Eu(iii) atoms upon coordination with more than one oxalate in an aqueous medium, and as well systematically validated the applicability of the spectral linear correlation in an aqueous system (otherwise solid state) involving multiple species with the support of relatively reliable and clear speciation modelling.

Abstract:The stability constants of M-L binary system and M-L-L' (M = La3+ similar to Yb3+, Y3+ and Ca2+; L= DL-malic aicd, L' = L-hydroxyproline) ternary system were determined by pH-(0)-tentiometric method under the simulating physiological condition(37 degrees C, I=0.15 mol/L NaCl). The complex species MpLqLr'H-s(abbr as pqrs) in the sytems were ascertained by program COMPLEX. The results show that there are three species(1101, 1100 and 1200) in M-L binary system and one species(1010) in M-L' binary system. In addition to the above four species, a new species, 1112 was found in the M-L-L' ternary system, which is the only species of mixed ligands. Rare earth ions form more stable complexes than calcium ion does and the stability differences between their complexes in the ternary system are less than that in the binary system. The distributions of all the species in La-L-L' ternary system vs pH are discussed.
A New Paradigmatic Lanthanide Coordination Chemistry - Assembling Lanthanide-Hydroxo Clusters under Physiological or Higher-Ph Conditions

Abstract:High - nuclearity lanthanide - hydroxo complexes were prepared via limited hydrolysis of lan-thanides using α - amino acids or EDTA as supporting ligands. These novel substances, synthesized under physiological or even higher- pH conditions, exist as tetranuclear cuboid [Ln4(μ3 - OH)4]8+ core - containing clusters. With appropriate halide templates, "wheel - like" supramolecular structures composed of four or five vertex - sharing [Ln4(μ3 - OH)4]8+ units are formed. The face - capped octahedral [Ln6(μ6 -O) (μ3 -OH)8]8 + cluster centering on an interstitial μ6 -O ligand is another stable form of lanthanide - hydroxo complexes and can be self - assembled via direct hydrolysis of lanthanide nitrates and perchlorates. The significant influence of pH conditions on lanthanide coordination chemistry is further illustrated by a new paradigmatic lanthanide- EDTA chemistry, wherein unprecedented multinuclear Ln - EDTA cluster complexes are realized.

Abstract:The coordination of 1,5-bis-(1′-phenyl-3′-methyl-5′-pyrazolone-4′)-1,5-pentanedione (BPMPPD) and 2,2′-bipyridine (bipy) with lanthanide ions in water-alcohol solution has been studied. Binuclear complexes of the types : Ln2(BPMPPD)3(bipy)2·nH2O (n = 2 for Y, n = 4 for Eu, Gd, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm and Yb); Ln2(BPMPPD)3bipy·nH2O (n = 10 for La, n = 3 for Pr, Nd, Sm and Tb) were formed. The compounds were characterized by elemental analysis, molar conductance, IR, UV, 1H NMR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and fluorescence spectra.

Abstract:The protonation constants of 3,3,9,9-tetramethyl-4,8-diazaundecane-2, 10-dioxime (PnAO), the stability constants of Zn(II), Cd(II), Hg(II)-PnAO, Zn(II), Cd (II), Hg(II)-5-substituted o-phenanthroline binary complexes and Zn(II), Cd(II), Hg(II) -PnAO-5-substituted o-phenanthroline ternary complexes have been deteimined by pH titration method at (35±0.1)°C, I=0.1mol·dm-3 KNO3. The results show that here exist Linear Free Energy Relationships (LFER) between the protonation constants of 5-substituted o-phenanthroline and the corresponding stability constants of Zn(II), Cd(II), Hg(II) binary complexes as well as the relevant constants for the Zn(II), Cd (II), Hg (II)-PnAO-5-substituted o-phenanthroline ternary system. The stability order for the title systems is generally shown by the following: Zn(II) > Cd(II) < Hg(II). The internal cause has been explored in terms of the charge/radius effect of the metal ions.

Abstract:Tetranuclear lanthanide-hydroxo complexes of the general formula [Ln(4 mu (3)-OH)(4)(AA)(x)(H2O)(y)](8+) (1, Ln = Sm, AA = Gly, x = 5, y = 11; 2, Ln = Nd, AA = Ala, x = 6, y = 10; 3, Ln = Er, AA = Val, x = 5, y = 10) have been prepared by a-amino acid controlled hydrolysis of lanthanide ions under near physiological pH conditions (pH 6-7). The core component of these compounds is a cationic cluster [Ln(4)(mu (3)-OH)(4)](8+) whose constituent lanthanide ions and triply bridging hydroxo groups occupy the alternate vertexes of a distorted cube. The amino acid ligands coordinate the lanthanide ions via bridging carboxylate groups. Utilizing L-glutamic acid as the supporting ligand, a cationic cluster complex (4) formulated as [Er-4(mu (3)-OH)(4)(Glu)(3)(H2O)(8)](5+) has been obtained. Its extended solid-state structure is composed of the cubane-like [Er-4(mu (3)-OH)(4)](8+) cluster building units interlinked by the carboxylate groups of the glutamate ligands. All compounds are characterized by using a combination of spectroscopic techniques and microanalysis (CHN and metal). Infrared spectra of the complexes suggest the coordinated amino acids to be zwitterionic. The presence of mass (MALDI-TOF) envelopes corresponding to the [Ln(4)(mu (3)-OH)(4)](8+) (Ln = trivalent Sm, Nd, or Er) core containing fragments manifests the integrity of the cubane-like cluster unit. Magnetic studies using Evans' method suggest that exchange interactions between the lanthanide ions are insignificant at ambient temperature. The structural identities of all four compounds have been established crystallographically. The tetranuclear cluster core has been demonstrated to be a common structural motif in these complexes. A mechanism responsible for its self-assembly is postulated.

Abstract:In this work, two cyclohexyl o-oxydiamides ligands: 2,2′-(cyclohexane-1,2-diylbis(oxy))bis(N,N-dioctylacetamide)( L1 : Octy-CDA) and 2,2′-(cyclohexane-1,2-diylbis(oxy))bis(N,N-bis(2-ethylhexyl)acetamide) ( L2 : 2-ethylhexyl-CDA) have been synthesized to study the extraction and coordination behaviors with trivalent lanthanides in HNO 3 media. The extractability of ligands increases with the atomic number of lanthanides increasing. The straight alkyl chain demonstrated better extraction ability than the branched chain, which was also most likely caused by the impact of steric hindrance effects. Coordination chemistry studies were evaluated through slope analysis, ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and fluorescence, and all the results indicating that lanthanides with the above ligands can form both 1:1 and 1:2 metal/ligand complexes during extraction, and two ligands are tetradentate ligands. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations shed light that the interaction between the carbonyl oxygen atom and Eu(III) in the ligand is much stronger than that of the ether-bonded oxygen atom, and the analysis of the bond-forming properties shows that the stability of the 1:2 complex is stronger than that of the 1:1 complex. This work enriched the coordination study of diamide with lanthanides, which is expected to improve our understanding of the chemical properties of lanthanides during coordination and provide new insight into the design and synthesis of novel ligands.

Abstract:High-nuclearity lanthanide complexes, having unique structures and potentially important applications, have been prepared via limited hydrolysis of lanthanide ions controlled by alpha-amino acids as supporting ligands, These novel complexes, synthesized under physiological or higher-pH conditions, exist as lanthanide-hydroxo clusters, reflecting the subtle balance between the hydrolysis of the metal ions and the multidentate supporting coordination of the ligands. A cuboid [Ln(4)(mu(3)-OH)(4)](8+) unit with four lanthanide ions and four triply bridging hydroxo ligands occupying the alternate vertices of a distorted cube has been identified as a prevalent structural motif in these complexes, wherein lanthanide complexation may be achieved via only the carboxylate group or simultaneous coordination of both the carboxylate and the amino moieties of an amino acid ligand. Bridging ligands with more than one carboxylate group may support open framework structures utilizing the [Ln(4)(mu(3)-OH)(4)](8+) unit as building blocks. In addition, "wheel-like" structures composed of four or five vertex-sharing [Ln(4)(mu(3)-OH)(4)](8+) units can be realized by the halide-templated synthesis. It has been further demonstrated that octahedral [Ln(6)(mu(6)-O)(mu(3)-OH)(8)](8+) core-containing clusters with an interstitial mu(6)-O ligand can be self-assembled via direct hydrolysis of lanthanide nitrates and perchlorates in the absence of any organic supporting ligands. Using a structurally unprecedented lanthanide-EDTA complex, the significant influence of pH conditions on the reaction outcome is illustrated.

Abstract:Binary systems of lanthanide ions (La, Nd, Gd, Ho, Tb, and Lu) with L-malic acid in molar ratios of 1:1 and 1:2 were studied. This study was carried out in aqueous solutions, and the composition of the formed complexes was confirmed using computer data analysis. The overall stability constants of the complexes and the equilibrium constants of the reaction were determined. The effect of ligand concentration on the composition of the internal coordination sphere of the central atom was observed. Changes in the coordination sphere of lanthanide ions were confirmed by spectroscopic measurements.

Abstract:Stability constants of two DTPA (diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid) complexes with lanthanides (ML2- and MHL-, where M stands for Nd and Eu and L stands for diethylenetriaminepentaacetate) at 10, 25, 40, 55, and 70 degrees C were determined by potentiometry, absorption spectrophotometry, and luminescence spectroscopy. The enthalpies of complexation at 25 degrees C were determined by microcalorimetry. Thermodynamic data show that the complexation of Nd3+ and Eu3+ with DTPA is weakened at higher temperatures, a 10-fold decrease in the stability constants of ML2- and MHL- as the temperature is increased from 10 to 70 degrees C. The effect of temperature is consistent with the exothermic enthalpy of complexation directly measured by microcalorimetry. Results by luminescence spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggest that DTPA is octa-dentate in both the EuL2- and EuHL- complexes and, for the first time, the coordination mode in the EuHL- complex was clarified by integration of the experimental data and DFT calculations. In the EuHL- complex, the Eu is coordinated by an octa-dentate H(DTPA) ligand and a water molecule, and the protonation occurs on the oxygen of a carboxylate group.

Abstract:Complexs formed from lanthanide nitrates Ln (NO_3)_3 (Ln=La, Ce, Pr, Nd) and 1, 8-naph-tho-161crown-5 with a 1:1 stoichiometry have been synthesized and characterized by elementalanalyses; IR spectra, X-ray powder diagrams as well as thermogravimetric and differentialthermal analyses. A single crystal X-ray structural analysis indicates that the coordination num-ber of these complexes is eleven.

Abstract:Two novel series of coordination frameworks [Ln(bta)(H2O)(2)]center dot nH(2)O center dot mEtOH (Ln = La 1a, n = 4.5, m = 0; Ln = Cc 1b, n = 4, m = 0; Ln = Pr 1c, n = 2.88, m = 0.35) and [Ln(2)(bta)(2)(H2O)(3)]center dot nH(2)O (Ln = La 2a, n = 2.14; Ln = Cc 2b, Pr 2c, n = 2) were synthesized by the reaction of 1,3,5-benzenetriacetic acid (H(3)bta) with the corresponding lanthanide salts using different methods. X-ray diffraction analyses reveal that all six complexes have 3D channel structures, but in the first series of complexes, each bta(3-) ligand adopts a cis, trans, trans conformation and acts as a mu(5)-bridge linking five lanthanide atoms, while in the second series, the bta(3-) ligands adopt cis, trans, trans and cis, cis, cis conformations and act as mu(6)- and mu(5)-bridges, respectively. Thus two series of complexes have the same metal atoms and ligands but different structures. The results show that the flexible triacid ligand is versatile and can adopt different conformations according to different reaction conditions. The variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements of complexes le and 2c showed that both complexes exhibit antiferromagnetic interactions between the Pr(III) ions.
