Abstract:Mass spectra of LaxC2n (x = 1,2), well known endohedral metallofullerenes, and Lu2C2n (2n = 76-112), new members of extractable metallofullerenes, were studied. Positive-ion laser desorption/ionization (LDI) and electron impact (EI) mass spectra indicated that lutetium is a special lanthanide that prefers to form dilutetium fullerenes by the are-burning method. However, the signals for Lu2C2n become very weak in negative-ion LDI-MS, this is different from La-2@C-80, which has close relative abundances in positive- and negative-ion MS. The distinction between Lu2C2n and La-2@C-80 in the negative-ion LDI mass spectra may be due to the different structures of La- and Lu-containing fullerenes. (C) 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:Endohedral metallofullerenes, namely fullerenes encapsulating a variety of otherwise unstable metallic units (such as M3N, M2C2, M2O, etc.), represent as a perfect platform for the study of metal-cage interactions and/or mutual selections. Herein, for the first time, we report the synthesis and isolation of four lutetium-containing carbide cluster metallofullerenes (CCMFs), namely, Lu2C2@C s (hept)-C88, Lu2C2@C 2(41)-C90, Lu2C2@C 2(43)-C90, and Lu2C2@D 3(85)-C92, respectively. These compounds were fully characterized by vis-NIR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) crystallography as well as cyclic voltammetry. Notably, the XRD analysis results unambiguously confirm that the cage size plays a decisive role in determining the geometry of the encased Lu2C2 cluster. Specifically, the butterfly-like Lu2C2 unit is found in the small C88 cage, whereas the Lu2C2 unit exhibits a twisted butterfly configuration in the relatively large C90 cages. As the cage size increases to C92, the Lu2C2 unit finally adopts a stretched zigzag geometry. Our comprehensive characterizations of a series of Lu2C90-94 isomers confirm experimentally that steering the outer cage size can selectively alter the configuration and geometry of the internal carbide clusters, presenting a useful method for the controllable synthesis of novel hybrid molecules.

Abstract:A series of endohedral metallofullerenes Ln@C82(Ln = Ce, Pr, Nd, Er, Dy, Ho, Tb) and Ln2@C80 (Ln = Ce, Pr) have been isolated with a purity of > 99% by an efficient solvent extraction procedure followed by HPLC separation. UV-VIS-NIR spectra of the metallofullerenes were measured in the wavelength range from 300 to 2100 nm. For Ln@C82, the spectral features are remarkably similar to those of La@C82, with a small peak shift in some cases, suggestive of the isoelectronic configuration for these species. For Ln2@C80, the spectra exhibit a monotonic decreasing absorbance as a function of wavelength, consistent with a closed-shell electronic structure.

Abstract:Endohedral metal-metal-bonding fullerenes, in which encapsulated metals form covalent metal-metal bonds inside, are an emerging class of endohedral metallofullerenes. Herein, we reported quantum-chemical studies on the electronic structures, chemical bonding, and dynamic fluxionality behavior of endohedral metal-metal-bonding fullerenes Lu2@C2n (2n = 76-88). Multiple bonding analysis approaches, including molecular orbital analysis, the natural bond orbital analysis, electron localization function, adaptive natural density partitioning analysis, and quantum theory of atoms in molecules, have unambiguously revealed one two-center two-electron σ covalent bond between two Lu ions in fullerenes. Energy decomposition analysis with the natural orbitals for chemical valence method on the bonding nature between the encapsulated metal dimer and the fullerene cage suggested the existence of two covalent bonds between the metal dimer and fullerenes, giving rise to a covalent bonding nature between the metal dimer and fullerene cage and a formal charge model of [Lu2]2+@[C2n]2-. For Lu2@C76, the dynamic fluxionality behavior of the metal dimer Lu2 inside fullerene C76 has been revealed via locating the transition state with an energy barrier of 5 kcal/mol. Further energy decomposition analysis calculations indicate that the energy barrier is controlled by a series of terms, including the geometric deformation energy, electrostatic interaction, and orbital interactions.

Abstract:In all metallofullerenes known before this work, metal atoms form single highly polar bonds with non-metal atoms in endohedral cluster. This is rather surprising for titanium taking into account the diversity of organotitanium compounds. Here we show that the arc-discharge synthesis of mixed titanium-lutetium metallofullerenes in the presence of ammonia, melamine or methane unexpectedly results in the formation of TiLu2C@Ih-C80 with an icosahedral Ih(7) carbon cage. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction and spectroscopic studies of the compound reveal an unprecedented endohedral cluster with a μ3-carbido ligand and Ti-C double bond. The Ti(IV) in TiLu2C@Ih-C80 can be reversibly reduced to the Ti(III) state. The Ti=C bonding and Ti-localized lowest unoccupied molecular orbital in TiLu2C@Ih-C80 bear a certain resemblance to titanium alkylidenes. TiLu2C@Ih-C80 is the first metallofullerene with a multiple bond between a metal and the central, non-metal atom of the endohedral cluster.

Abstract:In view of the growing interest in endohedral lanthanide fullerenes, Ce, as a typical+ 4 oxidation state lanthanide element, has been systematically studied. The synthesis, extraction and electronic structure of Ce @ C2n are investigated. Soot containing Ce@C2n was synthesized in high yield by carbonizing CeO2-containing graphite rods and are back-burning the CeC2-enriched cathode deposit in a DC arc plasma apparatus. Ce@C2n dominated by Ce@C82, can be efficiently extracted from the insoluble part of the soot after toluene Soxhlet extraction by pyridine at high temperature and high pressure in a closed vessel. About 60% Ce@C2n(2n = 82, 80, 78, 76) and 35% Ce@C82 can be enriched in the pyridine extract. This fact is identified by desorption electron impact mass spectrometry (DEI MS). The electronic structure of Ce@C2n is analyzed by using X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) of pyridine-free film. It is suggested that the encapsulated Ce atom is in a charge state close to+ 3 and was effectively protected from reaction with water and oxygen by the enclosing fullerene cage. Unlike theoretical expectation, the electronic state of Ce@C82 is formally described as Ce+3@C3−82.

Abstract:The technique of high-temperature high-pressure extraction with pyridine has been successfully utilized to extract a wide variety of endohedral rare-earth fullerenes of the type Ln@C-2n (Ln = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb). Ln@C-80, Ln@C-82, and Ln(2)@C-80 for most of the rare-earth metals can be produced with high-yield and selectively extracted from the carbon-are evaporation soot. Metallofullerenes containing Sm, Eu, and Yb (which could have +2 oxidation states) are especially difficult to extract. Some possible reasons for the high-yield extraction are discussed. The laser desorption mass spectrometric characterization results indicate a relationship between the extraction yields of metallofullerenes and the oxidation states and ionic radii of the rare-earths.

Abstract:The reported actinide-based endohedral clusterfullerenes (ECFs) are rather scarce thus far. Though several members have been detected in mass spectra, their exact structures and properties mostly remain unclear. Herein, density functional theory calculations revealed that the U272 observed in recent experiments should be U2D2(10611)-C72, U2C1(10610)-C72, or U2Cs(10616)-C72. Featuring two pairs of fused pentagons, their outer cages all break the well-known isolated pentagon rule. U2D2(10611)-C72 is the first clusterfullerene based on the D2(10611)-C72 cage, which only encapsulated dimetals (Sc2, La2, Ce2, Pr2) before. It is also the first time to reveal that C1(10610)-C72 and Cs(10616)-C72 can serve as the parent cage of an endohedral fullerene. Interestingly, the three isomers could interconvert with each other via Stone–Wales transformation with one internal U atom dynamically changing its orientation according to the position of pentagon adjacencies. A common electronic structure of (U4+)2(O)2–@C726– can be formally assigned to the three ECFs but with obvious covalent character for both U–O and U–C bonds. Their spatially extended U-5f orbitals substantially enhance the metal-cage interactions. Their various spectra were also simulated to assist future experiments. Endeavoring the First Lanthanide–Carbon Triple-Bond in Fullerene Cage

Abstract:Metal–ligand multiple bonds are intriguing in coordination and organometallic chemistry. However, lanthanide–carbon multiple bonds are extremely difficult to form. Despite decades of effort, isolable complexes containing lanthanide–carbon double bonds with terminal methyl carbene (= CH2) and lanthanide–carbon triple bonds have never been found. Here, we report the successful synthesis of an unprecedented lanthanide–carbon triple-bonded compound with cerium-carbide [Ce≡C − Sc2] cluster encapsulated inside a C80 fullerene cage. The molecular structure of CeCSc2@C80 and the nature of the Ce≡C triple bond are characterized through X-ray crystallography, spectroscopic analyses, and quantum chemical study, revealing a very short Ce≡C distance of 1.978(8) Å. Chemical bonding analysis suggests that the formation of the Ce≡C bond primarily arises from the stronger bonding affinity between carbon and cerium compared to scandium inside the encapsulated cluster. The fullerene cage plays a crucial role in stabilizing and protecting this trimetallic carbide cluster with a Ce≡C triple bond.

Abstract:The first well-defined lutetacyclopentadienes are synthesised from pentamethylcyclopentadienyl lithium (Cp*Li), 1,4-dilithio-1,3-butadienes, and LuCl3. The lutetacyclopentadiene shows excellent reactivity towards some small molecules, such as pivalaldehyde, Se, carbon dioxide, and isonitrile to efficiently construct 3-, 5-, 7-, 8-, and 9-membered rare-earth metallacycles. Both monoinsertion and double-insertion of two Lu-C-sp2 bonds are observed. Specially, the reaction between lutetacyclopentadiene and isonitrile afforded [3,5,5]-fused metallacycles. The distinguished reactivity can be attributed to the highly ionic character and the cooperative reactivity of two Lu-C-sp2 bonds.

Abstract:Rare-earth metals have been mostly entrapped into fullerene cages to form endohedral clusterfullerenes, whereas non-Group-3 transition metals that can form clusterfullerenes are limited to titanium (Ti) and vanadium (V), and both are exclusively entrapped within an I-h-C-80 cage. Non-Group-3 transition-metal-containing endohedral fullerenes based on a C-80 cage with D-5h symmetry, VxSc3-xN@D-5h-C-80 (x=1, 2), have now been synthesized, which exhibit two variable cluster compositions. The molecular structure of VSc2N@D-5h-C-80 was unambiguously determined by X-ray crystallography. According to a comparative study with the reported Ti- and V-containing clusterfullerenes based on a I-h-C-80 cage and the analogous D-5h-C-80-based metal nitride clusterfullerenes containing rare-earth metals only, the decisive role of the non-Group-3 transition metal on the formation of the corresponding D-5h-C-80-based clusterfullerenes is unraveled.

Abstract:A series of monoterbium endohedral metallofullerenes Tb@C-80, Tb@C-86, an& the second isomer of Tb@C-82 (II) has been produced and isolated from various hollow fullerenes and endohedral metallofullerenes by an efficient multi-stage chromatographic separation process for the first time. All these newly isolated metallofullerenes are characterized by laser-desorption time-of-flight (LD-TOF) mass spectrometry and UV-Vis-NIR absorption spectroscopy. Their possible molecular symmetries are discussed according to their HPLC retention time and absorption spectra.

Abstract:Encapsulation of transition metals represents a crucial method for modifying the electronic structure and regulating the reactivity of fullerene, thereby expanding its applications. Herein, we present calculations with density functional theory methods to investigate the mechanisms of the Diels‐Alder (DA) reactions of cyclopentadiene and La@C60 or Gd@C60 as well as their tricationic derivatives. Our findings indicate that the encapsulation of La and Gd into the C60 cage is thermodynamically favorable. The DA reactions are favored by the presence of La and Gd, with lower barriers, though the regioselectivity, favoring 6‐6 bonds in the fullerene, is not affected. The effect of external electric fields has been also considered.

Relative Yields Of Endohedral Lanthanide Metallofullerenes By Arc Synthesis And Their Correlation With The Elution Behavior

Abstract:Fourteen endohedral lanthanide metallofullerenes were synthesized using the are-discharge method under identical conditions, and their relative yields and elution behavior have been studied by mass spectrometry and HPLC. The eluate around the M@C-82 peak (M = lanthanide metal) was collected in two fractions of equal amount. The DCI negative ion mass spectrum of each metallofullerene in each collected fraction was well resolved on the basis of the characteristic isotopic distribution. The relative yield of these metallofullerenes was found to be in the following order: Ce > Pr > Tb, Gd > Nd > La similar to Er > Ho > Dy > Lu much greater than Tm similar to Sm similar to Eu similar to Yb. The order of their retention times (Tb > Gd > Pr > Ce > Er similar to Lu > La similar to Ho > Nd > Dy much greater than Tm similar to Sm similar to Eu similar to Yb) was also obtained by comparing the mass peak intensities of each metallofullerene from the two HPLC fractions. A fairly good correlation between these two sequences is identified and discussed.

Abstract:We report the first X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy study of a single crystal of the rare-earth endohedral fullerene Dy@C82. The lattice is found to be body-centered cubic (a = 25.79 A, space group $I\bar {4}3d)$ which is at variance with previous reports and confirms that several types of structures can be stabilized in Dy@C82. X-ray diffraction/diffuse scattering methods reveal no low-temperature change down to 12 K for the present structure. The Raman spectroscopy data are comparable to those of other M@C82 endohedral compounds. However, the Dy oxidation state and the force constant of the low-frequency metal-cage stretching mode do not follow the simple relationship observed before.

Abstract:Unsupported non-bridged uranium-carbon double bonds have long been sought after in actinide chemistry as fundamental synthetic targets in the study of actinide-ligand multiple bonding. Here we report that, utilizing Ih(7)-C80 fullerenes as nanocontainers, a diuranium carbide cluster, U=C=U, has been encapsulated and stabilized in the form of UCU@Ih(7)-C80. This endohedral fullerene was prepared utilizing the Krätschmer-Huffman arc discharge method, and was then co-crystallized with nickel(II) octaethylporphyrin (NiII-OEP) to produce UCU@Ih(7)-C80·[NiII-OEP] as single crystals. X-ray diffraction analysis reveals a cage-stabilized, carbide-bridged, bent UCU cluster with unexpectedly short uranium-carbon distances (2.03 Å) indicative of covalent U=C double-bond character. The quantum-chemical results suggest that both U atoms in the UCU unit have formal oxidation state of +5. The structural features of UCU@Ih(7)-C80 and the covalent nature of the U(f1)=C double bonds were further affirmed through various spectroscopic and theoretical analyses.
