Abstract:We report a fluorescence “turn-on” method to detect the critical micelle concentration (CMC) of surfactants. This method works well for both cationic and anionic surfactants. It employs an unprecedented mechanism (aggregation-induced emission, or AIE) to determine the CMC values, and the results are consistent with the data obtained by the classical techniques. In addition, this method renders the convenient detection of the CMC values. Any large and professional instruments are unnecessary, instead, a portable UV lamp and an ultrasonic generator are enough to carry out the detection in an ordinary laboratory. Considering that micelles are interesting entities and have found applications in many important fields such as emulsion polymerization, template of nanosized materials synthesis, controllable drug delivery and macromolecular self-assembling. Our experimental results may offer a facile, sensitive and promising method to detect the formation of micelles constructed by the new amphiphilic molecules and macromolecules.
Effect of surfactants on the chemiluminescence of acridinium dimethylphenyl ester labels and their conjugates

Abstract:Chemiluminescent acridinium dimethylphenyl esters, containing two methyl groups flanking the phenolic ester bond, display excellent chemiluminescence stability and are used as labels in automated immunoassays for clinical diagnostics. Light emission from these labels is triggered with alkaline peroxide in the presence of the cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium chloride. Under these conditions, light emission is rapid and is complete in <5 s. In the present study we examined the effect of various surfactants on light emission from acridinium dimethylphenyl ester labels and their conjugates containing hydrophilic linkers derived either from hexa(ethylene)glycol or a sulfobetaine zwitterion. Sulfobetaine zwitterions are very polar and incorporation of these functional groups in acridinium dimethyphenyl esters and their conjugates represents a new approach to improving the aqueous solubility of these chemiluminescent labels. Our results indicate that in general, surfactants affect light emission from these labels and their conjugates by two discrete mechanisms. Cationic surfactants, but not anionic or non-ionic surfactants, accelerate overall light emission kinetics and a more modest effect is observed with zwitterionic surfactants. Surfactants also enhance total light output and the magnitude of this enhancement is maximal for cationic surfactants and a sulfobetaine zwitterionic surfactant. These observations are the first to clearly delineate the role of the surfactant on the chemiluminescence reaction pathway of acridinium esters and can be rationalized based on known effects of surfactant aggregates on bimolecular and unimolecular reactions.

Abstract:The chemiluminescence (CL) of bis(2,4,6-trichlorophyenyl) oxalate with hydrogen peroxide in the present of cationic surfactant and gold nanoparticles was studied. The CL emission was obviously enhanced in the presence of surfactant at a suitable concentration, with a synergetic catalysis effect exhibited. Different sizes of gold nanoparticles (15 and 50 nm) showed different effects on CL intensity. Mechanisms of the CL reaction and sensitization effect are discussed.

Abstract:The luminol-hydrogen peroxide chemiluminescent system is widely used for the creation of diagnostic systems, for chemical analysis, for studying the kinetics and mechanisms of chemical reactions, for the creation of special and emergency light sources, and for monitoring living systems. However, the use of the luminol-hydrogen peroxide chemiluminescent system is limited by the fact that there are almost no ways of managing the reaction. The introduction of organized molecular systems into the luminol-hydrogen peroxide chemiluminescent system can create an additional channel for controlling chemiluminescent reactions. The luminol-hydrogen peroxide system was not previously studied in various classes of hydrocarbon and perfluorinated micellar solutions. This work was the first to study the effect of cationic, anionic and nonionic hydrocarbon surface-active substances (cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, sodium decyl sulfate, sodium dodecyl sulfate, triton X 100) and perfluorinated surface-active substances (FT-135 and FT-248) on the chemiluminescent systems luminol-hydrogen peroxide-potassium hexacyanoferrate(III) and luminol-hydrogen peroxide-copper(II) sulphate. The systems retain the ability to chemiluminescence in the presence of a surfactant. Cationic surfactants lower the intensity of chemiluminescence, and anionic surfactants increase the intensity of chemiluminescence. The introduction of a surfactant into the system allows increasing the range of dependence of the chemiluminescence intensity on the catalyst concentration. Kinetic curves of the growth and decay of chemiluminescence were measured in the systems. The rate constants of the chemiluminescence decay were measured in the framework of the first-order kinetics model.

A General Chemiluminescence Method for the Determination of Surfactants Based on Its Quenching Effect on the Luminol-Naio4-Cyclodextrin Reaction

Abstract:Here we report that all types of surfactant could be simply and sensitively determined, by directly quenching the chemiluminescence (CL) between luminol and NaIO4 in a basic solution containing one polyhydroxyl compound such as cyclodextrin (CD), glucose or glycerol. This specific quenching effect was attributed to the change of the microenvironment of the CL reaction, caused by the addition of various surfactants. Based on this fact, the potential use of this CL reaction was exemplified by the cationic surfactant CTMAB, anionic surfactant SDS and non-ionic surfactant Triton X-100. It was found that the measurable range of CTMAB, SDS and Triton X-100 were 4.0 x 10(-6)-4.0 x 10(-4) M by using a basic CD-luminol-NaIO4 CL reaction. With our simple setup, CTMAB, SDS and Triton X-100 were detectable at a concentration as low as 2 microM. Overall, this new CL reaction is quite promising for the post-column determination of surfactant mixtures.

Abstract:A new series of Ru(II) polypyridine surfactants, Ru(bpy)(2)[phenNH CO(CH2)(n)CH3](PF6)(2), where n is 10, 12, 14 or 16, has been prepared and characterized. The H-1-NMR spectra of these new Ru(II) complexes were attributed and discussed by the H-1-H-1 COSY method. The comparative analysis of IR spectra of these complexes and their responding free ligands has shown that there are intensive d --> pi* feedback interactions between central Ru(II) and their ligands. Their fluorescent, electrochemical and electrochemiluminescent behaviours are also reported.

Abstract:A series of structurally related rhenium(I) tricarbonyl diimine surfactant-active complexes, [Re(CO)(3)(diimine){py(CH2)(n)CH3}](+) and [Re(CO)(3)(diimine){pyCO(Chol)}](+) have been synthesized (n = 0, 1, 4, 12, 14, 16, 18; py = pyridyl, Chol = cholesteryl), and their photophysical, photochemical and electrochemical properties studied. A systematic study on the dependence of their photophysical properties in different environments has also been presented. In general, there is no apparent change in the photophysical behavior of these complexes as a function of the chain length of the surfactant type pyridyl ligands, the mechanism of which has been discussed. Langmuir-Blodgett films of the complexes have been prepared, and their pi-A isotherms, together with their electronic absorption and emission properties studied. The second harmonic generation (SHG) properties of the LB films have also been investigated. The X-ray crystal structure of a surfactant rhenium(I) complex, [Re(bpy)(CO)(3)(pyC(17)H(35))]ClO4 has been determined.

Abstract:Spherical Ru(bpy)2+3-doped silica (RuSi) nanoparticles were prepared via a water-in-oil microemulsion approach. The electrochemical and electrochemiluminescent properties of the RuSi nanoparticles immobilized on an indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode were investigated. Further, electrochemiluminescence (ECL) of the RuSi nanoparticles with covalently coated biomacromolecules was studied. By covalent cross-linking with glutaraldehyde, γ-(aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APTES)-pretreated RuSi nanoparticles were coupled with different concentrations of bovine serum albumin (BSA), hemoglobin, and myoglobin, respectively. ECL from these biomacromolecule-coated RuSi nanoparticles decreased with the increase of the loading of biomacromolecules. Moreover, the ECL of coreactants with different sizes was studied. The ECL decrease could be assigned to the steric hindrance and limited diffusion of coreactant molecules into the RuSi nanoparticles after biomacromolecule conjugation. Since tens of thousands of Ru(bpy)2+3 molecules are contained in the silica particles and the RuSi nanoparticle surface modification could improve their biocompatibility, the biomacromolecule-coated RuSi nanoparticles could be readily used as efficient and stable ECL tag materials in the future.
Two Orders-of-magnitude Enhancement in the Electrochemiluminescence of Ru(bpy)₃²⁺ by Vertically Ordered Silica Mesochannels.

Abstract:In this paper, we report significantly enhanced electrochemiluminescence (ECL) of tris(2,2'-bipyridyl)ruthenium(II) (Ru(bpy)₃²⁺) at indium tin oxide (ITO) electrodes modified with a thin film consisting of vertically aligned silica mesochannels (SMCs). The perpendicular SMCs allow for the effective mass transport of Ru(bpy)₃²⁺ and its co-reactants from the solution to the underlying ITO electrode surface. Moreover, due to the ultrasmall diameter (namely 2-3 nm) and the negatively charged surface, SMCs exerted a strong electrostatic attraction to the positively charged Ru(bpy)₃²⁺ to accelerate its mass transport, resulting in a remarkably increased ECL signal. As a model system, when using tri-n-propylamine (TPrA) as the co-reactant, the intensity of ECL generated at the SMCs-modified ITO electrode was stronger than that at a bare ITO electrode by more than two orders of magnitude (i.e., ∼107-fold increase). In this case, the amount of Ru(bpy)₃²⁺ required for ECL-based analysis can be considerably reduced. A very low concentration of Ru(bpy)₃²⁺, namely 9 μM, was demonstrated to be enough for achieving the sensitive detection of TPrA, nicotine and atropine. Both photomultiplier (PMT) and charge coupled device (CCD) were used to measure the luminescence from the ECL reaction. The obtained detection limits were 0.17 nM for TPrA on the basis of the ECL intensity measurement, 72 nM for nicotine and 38 nM for atropine based on the gray value analysis of captured ECL images.

Abstract:Efficient quenching electrochemiluminescence (ECL) of the tris(2,2'-bipyridine)ruthenium(II)/tripropylamine (Ru(bpy)(3)(2+)/TPrA) system by a novel quencher, sodium diphenylamine-4-sulfonate (SDS), has been investigated. The quenching behaviors can be observed with a 100-fold excess of SDS over Ru(bpy)(3)(2+). The mechanism of quenching is believed to involve energy transfer from the excited-state Ru(bpy)(3)(2+*) to the dimer of SDS, which was formed after the electrochemical oxidation of SDS at the electrode surface. Photoluminescence experiments coupled with bulk electrolysis support formation of the SDS dimer upon electrochemical oxidation.

Abstract:A novel efficient luminescent chemosensor based on a 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane (cyclen)-tethered Ru(bpy)(3)(2)+ derivative (Ru-cyclen) has been synthesized and characterized. It displays an ON-OFF-type luminescence change with excellent selectivity towards Cu(II) amongst 16 metal ions in 100% aqueous solution. The binding stoichiometry of Ru-cyclen with Cu2+ was established by Job plot analysis and mass spectral evidence. Furthermore, the in situ generated Ru-cyclen-Cu ensemble recovered luminescence in the presence of S-2(-), indicating an 'OFF-ON'-type sensing process. Similar phenomena were not observed with other common anions and biothiols, making it a high selective sulfide probe. Finally, the sensing mechanism is confirmed to be displacement approach by NMR, mass and emission spectrometry.
Chemiluminescence determination of surfactant Triton X-100 in environmental water with luminol-hydrogen peroxide system

Abstract:BackgroundThe rapid, simple determination of surfactants in environmental samples is essential because of the extensive use and its potential as contaminants. We describe a simple, rapid chemiluminescence method for the direct determination of the non-ionic surfactant Triton X-100 (polyethylene glycol tert-octylphenyl ether) in environmental water samples. The optimized experimental conditions were selected, and the mechanism of the Luminol-H2O2-Triton X-100 chemiluminesence system was also studied.ResultsThe novel chemiluminescence method for the determination of non-ionic surfactant Triton X-100 was based on the phenomenon that Triton X-100 greatly enhanced the CL signal of the luminol-H2O2 system. The alkaline medium of luminol and the pH value obviously affected the results. Luminol concentration and hydrogen peroxide concentration also affected the results. The optimal conditions were: Na2CO3 being the medium, pH value 12.5, luminol concentration 1.0 × 10-4 mol L-1, H2O2 concentration 0.4 mol L-1. The possible mechanism was studied and proposed.ConclusionUnder the optimal conditions, the standard curve was drawn up and quotas were evaluated. The linear range was 2 × 10-4 g·mL-1-4 × 10-2 g·mL-1 (w/v), and the detection limit was 3.97 × 10-5 g·mL-1 Triton X-100 (w/v). The relative standard deviation was less than 4.73% for 2 × 10-2 g·mL-1 (w/v) Triton X-100 (n = 7). This method has been applied to the determination of Triton X-100 in environmental water samples. The desirable recovery ratio was between 96%–102% and the relative standard deviation was 2.5%–3.3%. The luminescence mechanism was also discussed in detail based on the fluorescence spectrum and the kinetic curve, and demonstrated that Triton X-100-luminol-H2O2 was a rapid reaction.

Abstract:The effect of surfactants on fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-bovine serum albumin (BSA)-hypochlorite (ClO(-)), FITC-human serum albumin (HSA)-ClO(-), FITC-ovoconalbumin (OVA)-ClO(-), FITC-hemoglobin (Hb)-ClO(-) systems were investigated with chemiluminescence method by the reversed phase flow injection. It was found that the chemiluminescence (CL) intensity of each system was increased greatly in the presence of cationic surfactants. Cethyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) is the optimal surfactant of these systems. The optimal conditions of the CL reaction and the optimal concentration of CTAB were examined and the function of cationic surfactant CTAB on the CL reaction was also discussed.

Abstract:Tris-(2, 2'-bipyridyl)ruthenium(II) complex, Ru(bpy)(3)(2+), was immobilized on the Dowex-50 W cationic ion-exchange resin. The chemiluminescent characteristics of Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) in solution and in resin form were compared by using batch and flow injection methods. A strong chemiluminescence was observed during the reaction of Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) both in solution and in resin with KMnO(4) or Ce(SO(4))(2) under acidic or basic conditions. The Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) immobilized resin is stable, which can be used at least for 6 months when it reacts with the dilute KMnO(4) solution. Based on this property, Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) immobilized in the resin phase was developed as a flow-through chemiluminescent sensor that could be used to determine oxalate, sulfite and ethanol chemically or electronically with Ru(bpy)(3)(3+) generation on the surface of resin. The limits of detection were 1 x 10(-6) M for oxalate, 0.5% (v/v) for ethanol and 1 x 10(-7) M for sulfite. The method has been successfully applied to determine sulfite in sugar.

Abstract:Enhancement of the electrochemiluminescence (ECL) of tris(2,2′-bipyridine)ruthenium(II) ([Ru(bpy) 3 ] 2+ ) and tri- n -propylamine by redox mediators has emerged as a new approach to maximise the sensitivity of this mode of detection. Herein, we examine the influence of six water-soluble iridium(III) complexes on this widely used ECL system by deconvoluting their respective contributions to the overall ECL intensity over a range of applied potentials. The interconnected co-reactant ECL of these metal complexes, eliciting enhancement or quenching of the [Ru(bpy) 3 ] 2+ emission, can be understood by considering the available reaction pathways under different conditions and the disparate electrochemical and photophysical properties of the reactants. The ideal properties for enhancement are established, which will inform the future design and application of redox mediators in this ECL system.

Abstract:Electrochemiluminescence (ECL) generation by tris(2,2’-bipyridyl)ruthenium (Ru(bpy)32+) and S2O82− is one of most frequently studied cathodic systems. However, the reaction mechanism is yet to be fully resolved, since the reaction involving highly reactive intermediates occurs at the negative potential limit of aqueous solutions. In this work we used bismuth microwire (BiMW) as the working electrode and ECL microscopy (ECLM) as the imaging tool to study the mechanism of cathodic ECL generation by Ru(bpy)32+/S2O82−. Thanks to its high hydrogen evolution overpotential, BiMW electrode could provide us with a wide negative potential window in aqueous solutions. While ECLM allowed us to determine the thickness of ECL layer (TEL), which was found to vary from ca. 3.4 μm to 3.0 μm with increasing the concentration of S2O82−. Given the chemical reduction of S2O82− by Ru(bpy)3+ is essential for extending the concentration profile of SO4•−, the slightly changed TEL is likely related to the instability of Ru(bpy)3+ in aqueous solutions. Finally, no ECL was detected for Ru(bpy)32+-labelled microbeads, implying that S2O82− could not work as the cathodic coreactant like tri-n-propylamine (TPrA) as the anodic one in bead-based immunoassays.

Abstract:A surfactant-thermal method was used to prepare a new zinc-1,3,5-benzentricarboxylate-based metal-organic framework (ZJU-100) with confined Ru(bpy)32+ (RuBpy) complex by using surfactant PEG 400 as reaction medium. The RuBpy molecules were encapsulated between the 2-D sheets in ZJU-100. ZJU-100 showed bathochromic shift in the steady-state emission spectrum and increased emission lifetimes relative to RuBpy molecules. The extended lifetime is attributed to the reduced nonradiative decay rate due to the stabilization of RuBpy within the rigid MOF framework. These results represent the first example of MOF with confined complex synthesized by surfactant, indicating that the surfactant-thermal method could offer exciting opportunities for preparing new MOFs host/guest materials with novel structures and interesting luminescent properties.

Abstract:A novel water-soluble, visible-light-excitable, fluorescence enhancement sensor (lambda ex = 450 nm), [Ru (PYPZA-t-BuDO3A) (bipy)2]2+, has been synthesized and characterized, which efficiently recognize Zn2+ ions without interference from other biologically relevant metal ions, anions, amino acids, small biomolecules or pharma-ceutical molecules in phosphate buffered saline (PBS, pH = 7.0). The detection has high sensitivity (detection limit = 5.3533 x 10-9 mol/L) for Zn2+ ions owning to the formation of 1:1 binding with a large binding constant (K = 2.1586 x 105 M-1). Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations were performed to determine the mechanism for changes of photophysical properties illustrating fluorescence increase response to Zn2+ ions. The [Ru (PYPZA-tBuDO3A) (bipy)2]2+ also exhibits excellent membrane permeability and negligible cytotoxicity, and can be applied to sense intracellular Zn2+ in live human cells.
