Abstract:The formation of informal settlements on the peripheries of Chinese cities has been a direct outcome of national economic reforms, as previous constraints on population movement had served to prevent the movement of rural migrants into the cities. This article, a compilation of reports by two Chinese researchers, examines one such settlement on the southern border of Beijing, with consideration given to both socio-economic aspects of the settlement and to administrative implications for land management and planning.
