Abstract:The generalized invariant theory is used to study the problem of the diagonalization of the time-evolution operator. It is shown that there is an intimate connection between the diagonalization of the time-evolution operator and the phase factors. As an illustrative example, the quantum motion of an ion in a combined trap is investigated; the classical correspondence of the quantum motion and the stability problem are then discussed.

Abstract:Recently, large-scale trapped ion systems have been realized in experiments for quantum simulation and quantum computation. They are the simplest systems for dynamical stability and parametric resonance. In this model, the Mathieu equation plays the most fundamental role for us to understand the stability and instability of a single ion. In this work, we investigate the dynamics of trapped ions with the Coulomb interaction based on the Hamiltonian equation. We show that the many-body interaction will not influence the phase diagram for instability. Then, the dynamics of this model in the large damping limit will also be analytically calculated using few trapped ions. Furthermore, we find that in the presence of modulation, synchronization dynamics can be observed, showing an exchange of velocities between distant ions on the left side and on the right side of the trap. These dynamics resemble to that of the exchange of velocities in Newton's cradle for the collision of balls at the same time. These dynamics are independent of their initial conditions and the number of ions. As a unique feature of the interacting Mathieu equation, we hope this behavior, which leads to a quasi-periodic solution, can be measured in current experimental systems. Finally, we have also discussed the effect of anharmonic trapping potential, showing the desynchronization during the collision process. It is hopped that the dynamics in this many-body Mathieu equation with damping may find applications in quantum simulations. This model may also find interesting applications in dynamics systems as a pure mathematical problem, which may be beyond the results in the Floquet theorem.

Abstract:We propose an analog quantum simulator that uses ion traps to realize the many-body electron-electron Coulomb interaction of an electron gas. This proposal maps a system that is difficult to solve and control to an experimentally-feasible setup that can be realized with current technologies. Using a dilatation transform, we show that ion traps can efficiently simulate electronic Coulomb interactions. No complexity overhead is added if only the energy spectrum is desired, and only a simple unitary transform is needed on the initial state otherwise. The runtime of the simulation is found to be much shorter than the timescale of the corresponding electronic system, minimizing susceptibility of the proposed quantum simulator to external noise and decoherence. This proposal works in any number of dimensions, and could be used to simulate different topological phases of electrons in graphene-like structures, by using ions trapped in honeycomb lattices.

Abstract:We study the quantum dynamics of an ion confined in a radio-frequency trap in interaction with either a Bose or spin-polarized Fermi gas. To this end, we derive quantum optical master equations in the limit of weak coupling and the Lamb-Dicke approximations. For the bosonic bath, we also include the so-called "Lamb-shift" correction to the ion trap due to the coupling to the quantum gas as well as the extended Fröhlich interaction within the Bogolyubov approximation that have been not considered in previous studies. We calculate the ion kinetic energy for various atom-ion scattering lengths as well as gas temperatures by considering the intrinsic micromotion and we analyze the damping of the ion motion in the gas as a function of the gas temperature. We find that the ion's dynamics depends on the quantum statistics of the gas and that a fermionic bath enables to attain lower ionic energies. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevA.104.053314 ©2021 American Physical Society

Abstract:Gaussian distribution has been utilized to describe the global number density distribution of ion cloud in the Paul trap, which is known as the thermal equilibrium theory and widely used in theoretical modeling of ion clouds in the ion traps. Using ion trajectory simulations, however, the ion clouds can now also be treated as a dynamic ion flow field and the location-dependent features could now be characterized. This study was carried out to better understand the in-trap ion cloud properties, such as the local particle velocity and temperature. The local ion number densities were found to be heterogeneously distributed in terms of mean and distribution width; the velocity and temperature of the ion flow varied with pressure depending on the flow type of the neutral molecules; and the "quasi-static" equilibrium status can only be achieved after a certain number of collisions, for which the time period is pressure-dependent. This work provides new insights of the ion clouds that are globally stable but subjected to local rf heating and collisional cooling. Graphical Abstract ᅟ.
Non-Classicality and Non-adiabaticity in a Single Trapped Ion

Abstract:Trapped ion systems present non-classical characteristics such as squeezed states that show a quantum advantage in quantum sensing, quantum information processing and quantum thermodynamics. We analyze the non-classical characteristics of a system described by a single ion trapped by a periodic potential field. Within the regime of non-adiabatic manipulation of the potential field, the dynamics of motion of the center of mass of the ion can be described by a dimensionless parameter called the non-adiabatic parameter $Q^{*}$. This parameter allows us to distinguish the classical and non-classical characteristics of the system. Using the equations of motion of observables in the Heisenberg picture, we propose an analysis of the unitary time evolution operator and discuss the squeezing behavior in the state of motion of the ion. The results shown can serve as a basis to discuss the presence of squeezing as a resource in quantum thermodynamics in the non-adiabatic regime in actual achievable experimental limitations.

Abstract:We consider a system composed of a trapped atom and a trapped ion. The ion charge induces in the atom an electric dipole moment, which attracts it with an r^{-4} dependence at large distances. In the regime considered here, the characteristic range of the atom-ion interaction is comparable or larger than the characteristic size of the trapping potential, which excludes the application of the contact pseudopotential. The short-range part of the interaction is described in the framework of quantum-defect theory, by introducing some short-range parameters, which can be related to the s-wave scattering length. When the separation between traps is changed we observe trap-induced shape resonances between molecular bound states and vibrational states of the external trapping potential. Our analysis is extended to quasi-one-dimensional geometries, when the scattering exhibit confinement-induced resonances, similar to the ones studied before for short-range interactions. For quasi-one-dimensional systems we investigate the effects of coupling between the center of mass and relative motion, which occurs for different trapping frequencies of atom and ion traps. Finally, we show how the two types of resonances can be employed for quantum state control and spectroscopy of atom-ion molecules.

Abstract:The quantized center-of-mass (c.m.) motions of a single two-level atom or ion confined into a one-dimensional harmonic potential and interacting with a single-mode classical traveling-wave laser field are examined. We demonstrate that trap quantum states with remarkable nonclassical properties such as quadrature and amplitude-squared squeezing and sub-Poissonian statistics can be generated in this simple trap model when the c.m. motion is initially in certain coherent trap states. Our analyses also indicate that there exist some time regions where the production of nonclassical vibrational states is possible even if squeezing or sub-Poissonian statistics do not appear.

Abstract:When an ion confined in a linear ion trap interacts with a coherent laser field, the internal degrees of freedom, related to the electron transitions, couple to the vibrational degree of freedom of the ion. As a result of this interaction, quantum dynamics of the vibrational degree of freedom becomes complicated, and in some ranges of parameters even chaotic. We analyze the vibrational ion dynamics using a formal analogy with the solid-state problem of electron localization. In particular, we show how the resonant approximation used in analysis of the ion dynamics, leads to a transition from a two-dimensional (2D) to a one-dimensional problem (1D) of electron localization. The localization length in the solid-state problem is estimated in cases of weak and strong interaction between the cites of the 2D cell by using the methods of resonance perturbation theory, common in analysis of 1D time-dependent dynamical systems.

Abstract:The ion trap is a unique type of device that is used for quantum studies in physics and mass analysis in chemistry. The space charge effect, which is due to trapping of an excessive number of ions, has long been recognized to be harmful for ion manipulation or mass spectrometry analysis. Here, we show an interesting phenomenon in which the energy exchange through collective interaction between the ion species could be effectively used for ion manipulation and high-quality mass measurement. This observation not only reveals a fundamentally interesting process in ion trap operation but also suggests a new alternative means for mass analysis.

Abstract:Using a combination of molecular dynamics simulations and fundamental statistical mechanics, we analyze the position and velocity distribution of a trapped ion immersed in two ideal gases at differing temperatures. Such a system has been realized in the recently developed MOTion trap architecture. This system has the potential to serve as platform for studying nonequilibrium statistical mechanics in a controlled environment. As examples, we demonstrate a non-Maxwell Boltzmann velocity ionic distribution in the trap, the breakdown of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem, and position-velocity sorting, wherein high-velocity ionic states are over represented at points of high potential energy. We propose experiments to test these predictions.

Abstract:Two or three dimensional Paul traps can confine a large number of ions forming a Wigner crystal, which would provide an ideal architecture for scalable quantum computation except for the micromotion, an issue that is widely believed to be the killer for high fidelity quantum gates. Surprisingly, here we show that the micromotion is not an obstacle at all for design of high fidelity quantum gates, even though the magnitude of the micromotion is significantly beyond the requirement of the Lamb-Dicke condition. Through exact solution of the quantum Mathieu equations, we demonstrate the principle of the gate design under micromotion using two ions in a quadrupole Paul trap as an example. The proposed micromotion quantum gates can be extended to the many ion case, paving a new way for scalable trapped ion quantum computation.

Abstract:In this paper the dynamics of the two level trapped ion which acts with standing light field is investigated analytically. Evolution of the quantum mean energy of the ion with time displays the characteristic of collapse revival which implies the vibration states of the system have squeezing effect. The collapse revival of the quantum mean energy of the ion will become irregular because of the higher term in Hamiltonian of the system. The higher term will suppress coherence of the vibration state of the ion.

Abstract:In this paper, we suggest a way to perform coherent quantum arithmetic operation on the ions in different traps by interaction-free measurement. The physical processes and implementation steps of the controlled-NOT operation are carefully investigated. This method is, in effect, to connect different ion traps into one larger integral quantum register. Thus the more complex logic operations, as well as the quantum algorithm such as the Shor algorithm whose realization needs thousands of pubits, perhaps will be implemented through this way. It is also pointed out that this method is potentially useful in quantum cryptography and quantum communication.

Abstract:We present a quantum model of space charge limited current transport inside trap-free solids with planar geometry in the mean field approximation. We use a simple transformation which allows us to find the exact analytical solution for the steady state current case. We use our approach to find a Mott-Gurney like behavior and the mobility for single charge carriers in the quantum regime in solids.

Abstract:The generalized Jaynes-Cummings model describes the quantum interaction of the vibration of center-of-mass of a trapped ultracold ion and its inner degree of freedom with a quantized radiation field. By calculating the stare vectors and corresponding mean values especially those evolving from the initial entangled ion states, we find that the system will present new phase-sensitive and all-quantized dynamical properties under red and blue sideband excitations.

Abstract:We consider the secular motion of an ion stored in a Paul trap and interacting with a standing laser field. It is shown that the Schrodinger equation of the system is analogous to the linearized equation of a classically chaotic system. From the mathematical simulation between the two systems we reveal several new properties in the fully quantum treatment. The results lead to some parameter and energy gaps in which the motional ground state does not exist.

Abstract:We implement the proof of principle for the quantum walk of one ion in a linear ion trap. With a single-step fidelity exceeding 0.99, we perform three steps of an asymmetric walk on the line. We clearly reveal the differences to its classical counterpart if we allow the walker/ion to take all classical paths simultaneously. Quantum interferences enforce asymmetric, non-classical distributions in the highly entangled degrees of freedom (of coin and position states). We theoretically study and experimentally observe the limitation in the number of steps of our approach, that is imposed by motional squeezing. We propose an altered protocol based on methods of impulsive steps to overcome these restrictions, in principal allowing to scale the quantum walk to several hundreds of steps.
