Abstract:Starting from cranking shell model, a collective vibrational and rotational Hamiltonian (cranking Bohr-Mottelson Hamiltonian CBMH) is derived, in which the rotational frequency is not quantized. Introducing a reasonable collective potential, the formula for the rotational spectrum can be obtained. The formula is applied to analyze the rotational bands of even-even nuclei with satisfactory results.

Abstract:A collective model Hamiltonian incorporating a β−soft potential is proposed to elucidate phenomena related to triaxiality in transitional systems. The solutions derived from the model built within the core-particle scheme can be approximated using Bessel functions and subsequently applied to describe the exotic high-spin phenomena observed in the A≈130 mass region. Abstract:The rotational bands in nuclei with Z approximate to 100 are investigated systematically by using a cranked shell model (CSM) with the pairing correlations treated by a particle-number conserving (PNC) method, in which the blocking effects are taken into account exactly. By fitting the experimental single-particle spectra in these nuclei, a new set of Nilsson parameters (kappa and mu) and deformation parameters (epsilon(2) and epsilon(4)) are proposed. The experimental kinematic moments of inertia for the rotational bands in even-even, odd-A, and odd-odd nuclei, and the band-head energies of the one-quasiparticle bands in odd-A nuclei, are reproduced quite well by the PNC-CSM calculations. By analyzing the omega dependence of the occupation probability of each cranked Nilsson orbital near the Fermi surface and the contributions of valence orbitals in each major shell to the angular momentum alignment, the upbending mechanism in this region is understood clearly.

Abstract:A particle rotor model is developed which couples several valence protons and neutrons to a rigid triaxial rotor core. It is applied to investigating the chirality in odd-A nucleus 135Nd with πh11/22⊗νh11/2−1 configuration for the first time in a fully quantal approach. For the two chiral sister bands, the observed energies and the B(M1) and B(E2) values for the in-band as well as interband transitions are reproduced excellently. Root mean square values of the angular momentum components and their probability distributions are used for discussing in detail the chiral geometry of the aplanar rotation and its evolution with angular momentum. Chirality is found to change from a soft chiral vibration to nearly static chirality at spin I=39/2 and back to another type of chiral vibration at higher spin.

Abstract:A cranking Bohr-Mottelson Hamiltonian is proposed and a formula for the rotational spectrum is derived, showing explicitly the coupling between rotational and vibrational motions. The formula is applied to the rotational bands of even-even nuclei in the rare-earth and actinide regions. The ground-state rotational band (below backbending) and the associated beta and gamma bands can be represented by a single formula. Nuclear structure information on the parameters is discussed.

Abstract:Transition energies of 55 superdeformed bands in 20 nuclei of the A = 190 region are studied with formulae derived from the Cranking Bohr-Mottelson Hamiltonian and the level spins are determined. Mass parameter B1 and rigidity parameter C0 are obtained from the fitting parameters A and ħω′. The B1 and C0 values show clear odd-even effects. Deviations from the simple model are discussed.

Systematic investigation of the high-$K$ isomers and the high-spin rotational bands in the neutron rich Nd and Sm isotopes by a particle-number conserving method

Abstract:The rotational properties of the neutron rich Nd and Sm isotopes with mass number $A\approx150$ are systematically investigated using the cranked shell model with pairing correlations treated by a particle-number conserving method, in which the Pauli blocking effects are taken into account exactly. The 2-quasiparticle states in even-even Nd and Sm isotopes with excitation energies lower than 2.5~MeV are systematically calculated. The available data can be well reproduced and some possible 2 and 4-quasiparticle isomers are also suggested for future experiments. The experimentally observed rotational frequency variations of moments of inertia for the even-even and odd-$A$ nuclei are reproduced very well by the calculations. The effects of high-order deformation $\varepsilon_6$ on the 2-quasiparticle excitation energies and moments of inertia of the ground state bands in even-even Nd and Sm isotopes are analyzed in detail. By analyzing the occupation probability $n_\mu$ of each cranked Nilsson orbitals near the Fermi surface and the contribution of each major shell to the angular momentum alignments, the alignment mechanism in these nuclei is understood clearly.

Abstract:The ground state bands observed in even-even transfermium nuclei 250 Fm and 252,254 No are investigated by the cranked shell model with the particle-number conserving treatment for the monopole and quadrupole pairing correlations. The experimental variations of the kinematic moment of inertia with rotational frequency are reproduced very well in our calculation. Our results show bankbendings of [Formula: see text] at ħω ≈ 0.275 and 0.300 MeV in 252 No and 254 No , respectively. The detailed information about the contribution to alignment from each cranked single particle level exhibits that the backbending is mainly due to the rapidly aligned angular momentum of proton 1j15/2 [770]1/2 pairs and neutron 2h11/2 [761]3/2, 1j15/2 [734]9/2 pairs the band crossing.

Abstract:Starting from the Bohr Hamiltonian we investigate the spectrum of well-deformed nucleus of which the axial asymmetry is not too large. To diagonalize the Bohr Hamiltonian a suitable potential with certain singularity is assumed and the terms of (sin43γ) in the rotational energy operator expanded in powers of sin 3γ are omitted. The usually adopted adiabatic approximation is given up in present treatment. It is shown that the nuclear collective excitation spectrum manifests the vibrational-rotational band structure and can be described by a convenient closed formula. Within a vibrational-rotational band the moment of inertia and the deformation no longer remain constant and the energy spectrum deviates from the I(I+1) rule in varying degrees.
Microscopic triaxial cranking model: preliminary predictions for oscillator potential and light nuclei

Abstract:The conventional cranking model for uniaxial and triaxial rotation (CCRM3) is frequently used to study rotational features in deformed nuclei. However, CCRM3 is semi-classical and phenomenological because it uses a constant angular velocity, resulting in a number of Hamiltonian symmetry breakings. To investigate the effect of a dynamic angular velocity, a quantal, microscopic, D2, signature, and time-reversal invariant cranking model for triaxial rotation (MSCRM3) is derived exactly from a unitary rigid-flow-velocity-field rotation transformation of the nuclear Schrodinger equation and Hartree-Fock method. Except for a microscopically-determined angular velocity and normally-small residual terms, the MSCRM3 and CCRM3 Schrodinger equations are identical in form. The microscopic angular velocity emerges from the HF variation, and the residual terms may become significant for triaxial rotation at high spins and in back-bending regions where and undergo large changes. A preliminary application of MSCRM3 and CCRM3 to the light nuclei 20Ne, 24Mg, and 28Si using the simple self-consistent deformed harmonic oscillator potential predicts some interesting differences between the rotational features and phenomena predicted by the two models. These differences are attributable to the impact of the dynamic angular velocity. It is important to investigate and understand these differences for the simple and realistic nuclear interactions.

Abstract:The ground state band was recently observed in the superheavy nucleus (256)Rf. We study the rotational properties of (256)Rf and its neighboring even-even nuclei by using a cranked shell model (CSM) with the pairing correlations treated by a particle-number conserving (PNC) method in which the blocking effects are taken into account exactly. The kinematic and dynamic moments of inertia of the ground state bands in these nuclei are well reproduced by the theory. The spin of the lowest observed state in (256)Rf is determined by comparing the experimental kinematic moments of inertia with the PNC-CSM calculations and agrees with previous spin assignment. The effects of the high order deformation epsilon(6) on the angular momentum alignments and dynamic moments of inertia in these nuclei are discussed.

Abstract:Theoretical calculations are performed for neutron deficient Pt isotopes Pt-177 and Pt-175,Pt-173,Pt-171 in the particle-triaxial-rotor model with variable moment of inertia. The obtained energy spectra agree with experimental data quite well. The calculated results indicate that all these nuclei are in triaxial rotation with Pt-177 being in prolate and Pt-175,Pt-173,Pt-171 in oblate. Several levels are predicted for the 13/2(+) band in Pt-169.

Abstract:The criteria for chiral doublet bands based on one particle and one hole coupled to a triaxial rotor have been summarized. Candidate chiral doublet bands in A similar to 100 and 130 odd-odd nuclei were checked against these chiral criteria. Two representative cases, nearly degenerate Delta I = 1 doublet bands in (126)Cs and 106 Rh were investigated in the two quasiparticles coupled with a triaxial rotor model. After including the pairing correlation, good agreement has been obtained between the calculated results and the data available, which supports the interpretation of observed doublet bands as chiral bands.

Abstract:By adopting the fully quantal triaxial particle-rotor model, the candidate chiral doublet bands in odd-A nuclei Rh-103 and Rh-105 with pg(-1) pi g(9/2)(-1) circle times nu h(11/2)(2)configuration are studied. For the doublet bands in both nuclei, agreement is excellent for the observed energies over the entire spin range and B(M1)/B(E2) at higher spin range. The evolution of the chiral geometry with angular momentum is discussed in detail by using the angular momentum components and their probability distributions. Chirality is found to change from chiral vibration to nearly static chirality at spin I = 37/2 and back to another type of chiral vibration at higher spin. The influence of the triaxial deformation gamma is also studied.

Abstract:The simplest type of vibration, that in which the nucleus makes surface oscillations about an equilibrium spherical shape, is reviewed in light of current nuclear literature. Such a model, based on purely harmonic vibrations, shares some success with other models in describing the origin of nuclear level schemes. However, a detailed examination of known nuclear spectra and recent measurements of quadrupole moments and transition probabilities suggest that this approach is only semivalid, emphasizing the need to include anharmonicity in the vibrational Hamiltonian.
