Abstract:In order to explore the influence of adiabatic process on fusion reactions, we employ 13 different phenomenological nuclear potentials to make a systematic comparison of the experimental and calculated fusion cross sections. After two colliding nuclei contact, the adiabatic process is introduced to calculate the fusion cross sections at the above- and sub- barrier energies for 16 fusion reactions. At deep sub-barrier energy region, a detailed investigation is made to study the fusion hindrance by taking Krappe-Nix-Sierk, Bass (1980), and Akyüz-Winther nuclear potentials as examples. For newly observed fusion systems 12C + 198Pt, 11B + 197Au, and 40Ca + 90Zr, the calculated fusion cross sections are in good agreement with experimental data by considering the damping of coupled-channels effect. The results of astrophysical S factor and logarithmic derivative at deep sub-barrier energies show a close dependence on the behavior of potentials inside the Coulomb barrier. For newly observed light mass system 12C + 30Si, the corresponding improvement by considering the damping factor is small owing to the weak coupling effect.

Abstract:The fusion barriers and cross sections of 15 colliding systems with are investigated in detail to understand the influence of the universal function of proximity potential formalism in the heavy-ion fusion mechanism. To realize this goal, we select three versions of the phenomenological proximity potentials, including Prox. 77, Zhang 2013, and Guo 2013, to calculate the nucleus-nucleus potential. The experimental fusion cross sections for the selected reactions are analyzed via the standard coupled-channels (CC) calculations, including couplings to the low-lying and states in target and projectile. The calculated results show the universal functions of the Guo 2013 and Prox. 77 models provide the lowest and highest fusion barriers, respectively. In addition, it is found that the height of fusion barriers is enhanced by increasing the mass number of the projectile from light to heavy ones. The highest sensitivity to the mass number of the projectile belongs to the results of Prox. 77. A discussion is also presented about the influence of universal function on the radial behavior of the interaction potential in the allowed region for overlapping configurations. Our results reveal that the best fit to the experimental data of the fusion cross sections for the reactions involving light and medium nuclei is obtained using the universal function of the Zhang 2013 model. For the heavier systems, the results of the Guo 2013 model at sub-barrier energies provide a good description of the available data.

Abstract:In this study,the Pauli blocking potential between two colliding nuclei in the density overlapping region is applied to describe the heavy nuclei fusion process.Inspired by the Pauli blocking effect in the α-decay of heavy nuclei,the Pauli blocking potential of single nucleon from the surrounding matter is obtained.In fusion reactions with strong density overlap,the Pauli blocking potential between the projectile and target can be constructed using a single folding model.By considering this potential,the double folding model with a new parameter set is employed to analyze the fusion processes of 95 systems.A wider Coulomb barrier and shallower potential pocket are formed in the inner part of the potential between the two colliding nuclei,compared to that calculated using the Akyüz-Win-ther potential.The fusion hindrance phenomena at deep sub-barrier energies are described well for fusion systems 16O + 208Pb and 58Ni + 58Ni.

Abstract:The Skyrme energy-density functional approach has been extended to study massive heavy-ion fusion reactions. Based on the potential barrier obtained and the parametrized barrier distribution the fusion (capture) excitation functions of a lot of heavy-ion fusion reactions are studied systematically. The average deviations of fusion cross sections at energies near and above the barriers from experimental data are less than 0.05 for 92% of 76 fusion reactions with Z1Z2<1200. For the massive fusion reactions, for example, the U238-induced reactions and Ca48+Pb208, the capture excitation functions have been reproduced remarkably well. The influence of structure effects in the reaction partners on the capture cross sections is studied with our parametrized barrier distribution. By comparing the reactions induced by double-magic nucleus Ca48 and by S32 and Cl35, the “threshold-like” behavior in the capture excitation function for Ca48-induced reactions is explored and an optimal balance between the capture cross section and the excitation energy of the compound nucleus is studied. Finally, the fusion reactions with S36, Cl37, Ca48, and Ti50 bombarding Cm248, Bk247,249, Cf250,252,254, and Es252,254, as well as the reactions leading to the same compound nucleus with Z=120 and N=182, are studied further. The calculation results for these reactions are useful for searching for the optimal fusion configuration and suitable incident energy in the synthesis of superheavy nuclei.

Abstract:We carefully compare the one-dimensional WKB barrier tunneling model, and the one-channel Schödinger equation with a complex optical potential calculation of heavy-ion fusion, for a light and a heavy system. It is found that the major difference between the two approaches occurs around the critical energy, above which the effective potential for the grazing angular momentum ceases to exhibit a pocket. The value of this critical energy is shown to be strongly dependent on the nuclear potential at short distances, on the inside region of the Coulomb barrier, and this dependence is much more important for heavy systems. Therefore the nuclear fusion process is expected to provide information on the nuclear potential in this inner region. We compare calculations with available data to show that the results are consistent with this expectation.

Effective nucleus-nucleus potentials for heavy-ion fusion reactions

Abstract:Based on the Skyrme energy density functional and the reaction $Q$-value, we propose an effective nucleus-nucleus potential for describing the capture barrier in heavy-ion fusion processes. The 443 extracted barrier heights are well reproduced with a root-mean-square (rms) error of 1.53 MeV and the rms deviations with respect to 144 TDHF capture barrier heights is only 1.05 MeV. Together with the Siwek-Wilczyński formula in which the three parameters are determined by the proposed effective potentials, the measured capture cross sections at energies around the barriers can be reasonably well reproduced for a series of fusion reactions induced by not only nearly spherical nuclei but also the nuclei with large deformations such as $^{154}$Sm and $^{238}$U. The shallow capture pockets and small values of the average barrier radii play a role in the reduction of the capture cross sections for $^{52,54}$Cr and $^{64}$Ni induced reactions which are related to the synthesis of new super-heavy nuclei.

Abstract:The fusion hindrance in heavy ion collisions is studied in the framework of the two-center liquid drop model. It appears that the neck and the radial degrees of freedom might both be hampered by an inner potential barrier on their path between the contact configuration to the compound nucleus. Heavy ion reactions with and without the two kinds of fusion hindrance are classified through systematic calculations. It is found that the number of reactions without radial fusion hindrance is much smaller than that without neck fusion hindrance, and for both kinds of fusion hindrance the number of reactions without fusion hindrance at small mass-asymmetry parameter $\alpha$ is smaller than that at large $\alpha$. In the formation of a given compound nucleus, if a reaction with $\alpha_c$ is not hindered, then other reactions with $\alpha > \alpha_c$ are also not hindered as it is well known experimentally.
Influence of the tensor interaction on heavy-ion fusion cross sections

Abstract:[Background] While the tensor interaction has been shown to significantly affect the nuclear structure of exotic nuclei, its influence on nuclear reactions has only recently been investigated. The primary reason for this neglect is the fact that most studies of nuclear dynamics do not include the tensor force at all in their models. Indeed, only a few Skyrme parametrizations consider the tensor interaction in parameter determination. With modern research facilities extending our ability to probe exotic nuclei, a correct description of nuclear dynamics and heavy-ion fusion is vital to both supporting and leading experimental efforts. [Method] Fusion cross sections are calculated using ion-ion potentials generated by the fully microscopic density-constrained time-dependent Hartree-Fock (DC-TDHF) method with the complete Skyrme tensor interaction. [Results] For light nuclei, the tensor force only slightly changes the sub-barrier fusion cross sections at very low energies. Heavier nuclei, however, begin to exhibit a substantial hindrance effect in the sub-barrier region. This effect is strongest in spin-unsaturated systems, though can manifest in other configurations as well. Static, ground state deformation effects of the tensor force can also affect cross sections by shifting the fusion barrier. [Conclusions] The tensor interaction has a measurable effect on the fusion cross sections of nuclei spanning the nuclear chart. The effect comes from both static effects present in the ground state and dynamic processes arising from the time evolution of the system. This motivates the development of a modern Skyrme parameter set that includes all time-odd and tensor terms and that studies moving forward should include the tensor force to ensure a more robust and complete description of nuclei.

Microscopic dynamics simulations of heavy-ion fusion reactions induced by neutron-rich nuclei

Abstract:The heavy-ion fusion reactions induced by neutron-rich nuclei are investigated with the improved quantum molecular dynamics (ImQMD) model. With a subtle consideration of the neutron skin thickness of nuclei and the symmetry potential, the stability of nuclei and the fusion excitation functions of heavy-ion fusion reactions O16 + Ge76, O16 + Sm154, Ca40 + Zr96, and Sn132 + Ca40 are systematically studied. The fusion cross sections of these reactions at energies around the Coulomb barrier can be well reproduced by using the ImQMD model. The corresponding slope parameter of the symmetry energy adopted in the calculations is L≈78 MeV and the surface energy coefficient is gsur=18±1.5 MeV fm2. In addition, it is found that the surface-symmetry term significantly influences the fusion cross sections of neutron-rich fusion systems. For sub-barrier fusion, the dynamical fluctuations in the densities of the reaction partners and the enhanced surface diffuseness at neck side result in the lowering of the fusion barrier.

Abstract:The Skyrme energy density functional has been applied to the study of heavy-ion fusion reactions. The barriers for fusion reactions are calculated by the Skyrme energy density functional with proton and neutron density distributions determined by using restricted density variational (RDV) method within the same energy density functional together with semi-classical approach known as the extended semi-classical Thomas–Fermi method. Based on the fusion barrier obtained, we propose a parametrization of the empirical barrier distribution to take into account the multi-dimensional character of real barrier and then apply it to calculate the fusion excitation functions in terms of barrier penetration concept. A large number of measured fusion excitation functions spanning the fusion barriers can be reproduced well. The competition between suppression and enhancement effects on sub-barrier fusion caused by neutron-shell-closure and excess neutron effects is studied.

Abstract:A modified Woods-Saxon potential model is proposed for a unified description of the entrance channel fusion barrier and the fission barrier of fusion-fission reactions based on the Skyrme energy-density functional approach. The fusion excitation functions of 120 reactions have been systematically studied. The fusion (capture) cross sections are well described with the calculated potential and an empirical barrier distribution. Incorporating a statistical model (HIVAP code) for describing the decay of the compound nucleus, the evaporation residue (and fission) cross sections of 51 fusion-fission reactions have been systematically investigated. Optimal values of some key parameters of the HIVAP code are obtained based on the experimental data of these reactions. The experimental data are reasonably well reproduced by the calculated results. The upper and lower confidence limits of the systematic errors of the calculated results are given.

Abstract:The nuclear fusion is a reaction to form a compound nucleus. It plays an important role in several circumstances in nuclear physics as well as in nuclear astrophysics, such as synthesis of superheavy elements and nucleosynthesis in stars. Here we discuss two recent theoretical developments in heavy-ion fusion reactions at energies around the Coulomb barrier. The first topic is a generalization of the Wong formula for fusion cross sections in a single-channel problem. By introducing an energy dependence to the barrier parameters, we show that the generalized formula leads to results practically indistinguishable from a full quantal calculation, even for light symmetric systems such as 12C+12C, for which fusion cross sections show an oscillatory behavior. We then discuss a semi-microscopic modeling of heavy-ion fusion reactions, which combine the coupled-channels approach to the state-of-the-art nuclear structure calculations for low-lying collective motions. We apply this method to subbarrier fusion reactions of 58Ni+58Ni and 40Ca+58Ni systems, and discuss the role of anharmonicity of the low-lying vibrational motions.

Experimental nuclear charge density and theoretical description of the above-barrier light heavy-ion fusion process

Abstract:Theoretical modeling of nucleus-nucleus collision often is based on the nucleus-nucleus potential. One of the advanced methods for constructing this potential is the semi-microscopical double-folding model with the M3Y-Paris NN-forces. Proton and neutron densities are significant ingredient of this model. Correct nucleon density (ND) must reproduce experimental nuclear charge density (NCD). We consider several versions of NDs available in the literature and construct our own approximation for the ND of even-even spherical nuclei 12C, 16O, 40Ca which is abbreviated as FE-density (Fermi+exponential). We carefully compare the NCDs resulting from different versions of NDs with the experimental NCSs. After finding the nucleus-nucleus potential using the double-folding model with the density dependent M3Y-Paris NN-forces and FE densities we evaluate the above-barrier fusion cross sections for five reactions, 12C+12C, 12C+16O, 16O+16O, 16O+40Ca, and 40Ca+40Ca, where the experimental data are available. The cross sections are calculated using two approaches: a) the barrier penetration model and b) the Trajectory Model with surface friction (TM). To find the transmission coefficients for TM, the Langevin equations are employed. For all considered reactions, our TM typically reproduces the above-barrier experimental cross sections within 10-15%. The only adjustable parameter of the model, the optimal friction strength K_Rm, was found to be about 90 zs/GeV for light reactions 12C+12C, 12C+16O, 16O+16O and about 15 zs/GeV for heavier reactions 16O+40Ca and 40Ca+40Ca. The latter findings are in reasonable agreement with the systematics found earlier. Thus, the FE-recipe allows reproducing simultaneously with good accuracy both the charge nucleon density and the above-barrier fusion cross sections for five reactions involving 12C, 16O, 40Ca nuclei.

Abstract:We overview the current status of theoretical approaches for heavy-ion fusion reactions at subbarrier energies. We particularly discuss theoretical challenges in the coupled-channels approach, that include i) a description of deep subbarrier hindrance of fusion cross sections, ii) the role of nuclear dissipation, iii) fusion of unstable nuclei, and iv) an interplay between fusion and multi-nucleon transfer processes. Density Variation Effects in Α + Pb208 and O16

Abstract:We propose a hybrid approach between the sudden model and the adiabatic model to explain the fusion hindrance in heavy-ion fusion reactions at deep subbarrier energies. Due to the strong Pauli blocking effects at the density overlap region, the $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ particle approaching the target $^{208}\mathrm{Pb}$ becomes enlarged and its density distribution gets changed. By introducing energy dependence into this density variation effect, the potentials at different colliding energies are diverse. With the decrease of colliding energies, the significantly enhanced density variation effects make the nuclear potential more attractive and result in a deeper pocket in the inner part. A reasonable description of the experimental fusion cross sections is achieved for the $\ensuremath{\alpha} + ^{208}\mathrm{Pb}$ reaction. On account of highlighting the influence of density variation effects on the fusion process at deep subbarrier energies, we further investigate the density variation effects in the $^{16}\mathrm{O} + ^{208}\mathrm{Pb}$ fusion reaction based on the $\ensuremath{\alpha}$-cluster structures in $^{16}\mathrm{O}$ nuclei. The fusion hindrance at deep subbarrier energies is described well by considering the density variation effects. In addition, an astrophysical $S$ factor between the sudden model and adiabatic model is predicted at the energies below the experimental data.
Ab initio many-body calculations of the 3H(d,n)4He and 3He(d,p)4He fusion

Abstract:We apply the ab initio no-core shell model/resonating group method approach to calculate the cross sections of the 3H(d,n)4He and 3He(d,p)4He fusion reactions. These are important reactions for the Big Bang nucleosynthesis and the future of energy generation on Earth. Starting from a selected similarity-transformed chiral nucleon-nucleon interaction that accurately describes two-nucleon data, we performed many-body calculations that predict the S-factor of both reactions. Virtual three-body breakup effects are obtained by including excited pseudostates of the deuteron in the calculation. Our results are in satisfactory agreement with experimental data and pave the way for microscopic investigations of polarization and electron screening effects, of the 3H(d,gamma)5He radiative capture and other reactions relevant to fusion research.

The studies of charge transfer in the interaction between highly charged ions and molecule at Fudan University

Abstract:Cross section, being amongst the most important parameter in describing atomic collision processes, can point towards the relevant reaction mechanisms and also have been used as key physical quantities for checking many-body theories [1]. On the other hand, cross sections for the interaction between ions and atoms play an important role in understanding astrophysical plasmas and fusion plasma diagnostics. However, due to the complicated collisional processes and high costs involved in experimental measurements, cross sections for highly charge ions interacting with atoms/molecules are still limited. We start to systematic study of the interactions between ions and atoms/molecules based on the highly charged ion collision platforms Shanghai [2]. Using a reaction microscope, the three dimension momenta of the projectile ions, the recoil ions and the free electrons can be measured in multi-coincidence for the interaction of ions with atoms/molecules. Then both the transfer ionization cross sections and state-selective differential cross sections can be deduced, and the fragmentation mechanism of molecular ions also can be analyzed with the three dimensional momentum measurement. At the same time, Base on time-dependent density functional theory non-adiabatically coupling with molecular dynamics, we investigated the ionatom/molecule collision processes. Aiming at manyelectron systems with large spacial scale, we proposed an approximate method to extract the electron capture cross sections, avoiding explicit dependence on the final scattering wave functions. To demonstrate the reliability of the method, we reconstructed the electron capture and ionization cross sections in N2 system in collision with proton [3]. The results agree reasonably well with the experimental data and semi-empirical results in the keV energies. In this report, I will first introduce the experimental facilities for highly charged ion colliding with atoms and molecules, then present some new result. Studies on P+ 6 Li Fusion Reaction Using 3-Parameter Model

Abstract:The 3-parameter model introduces 3 parameters (radius of a square nuclear potential well, the real part and the imaginary part of the nuclear potential depth) to describe the low energy behavior of the fusion cross-section for light nuclei. It has been justified by the experimental data from the National Nuclear Data Center (NNDC) for 3 major fusion reactions (d + T, d + D, and d + 3He). In the present paper this 3-parameter model has been extended to p+6Li fusion reaction. It agrees with the fusion cross-section data from NNDC again. Moreover it is able to calculate the astrophysical S-factor with an electron screening potential for p+6Li fusion reaction as well. As a development of the 3-parameter model, the necessary condition for a low energy resonant tunneling through Coulomb barrier is derived. It reveals further the possibility of resonant tunneling at very low energy for p+6Li system.

Abstract:We systematically explored all conceivable combinations of projectiles and targets through experimental studies, focusing on the synthesis of lanthanides to superheavy nuclei within the atomic number range of 58≤Z≤117 . Utilizing the dinuclear system model, we evaluated evaporation residue cross sections for each fusion reaction, identified optimal energies associated with larger evaporation residue cross sections. Our study delved into the influence of entrance channel parameters such as mass asymmetry, charge asymmetry, charge product, Coulomb interaction parameter, mean fissility, and fusion barrier height on these optimal energies. Notably, a systematic variation in optimal energies was observed for the Coulomb interaction parameter. Additionally, the deformation parameter exhibited an influence on optimal energies, and pronounced discrepancies were noted in specific fusion reactions such as Ar40(Ta181,4n)Pa217 , and for the reactions such as O16(Ba134,4n)Gd146 , He4(Er166,3n)Yb167 , and Ca48(Bk249,4n)Ts293 , when compared to other fusion reactions explored. The empirical formula presented successfully replicates experimental optimal energies for the atomic number range 58≤Z≤117 . Its straightforward application involves inputting the atomic and mass numbers of the projectile and target nuclei, along with deformation parameters, underscoring its simplicity and effectiveness in predicting optimal energies in diverse fusion reactions.
