Abstract:The photoacoustic spectra(PAS) of the coprecipitates Tb3+-Gd3+-Sal complexes are reported. With the increase of the concentration of Gd3+ ion, the PA intensity of complexes decrease firstly, then increase. It is indicated that the addition of the second rare earth ion Gd3+ changes the relaxation processes of the complexes. The changes of the fluorescence spectra turn out complementary to the PAS. The intramolecular energy transfer and the intermolecular energy transfer processes in coprecipitates are discussed.

Abstract:The photoacoustic (PA) spectra of powdered neodymium oxide Nd2O3(A type), neodymium hydrated chloride NdCl3. 6H(2)O and neodymium fluoride NdF3 are reported. The PA band shifts compared with their positions in aqueous Nd(III) ion have been used to calculate the covalency parameters for the compounds. The variation of these parameters and their correlation with the nature of metal-ligand bonding are discussed. A new method is introduced to determine relative oscillator strengths by PA spectroscopy. It is found that with increase of the nephelauxetic effect, the oscillation strengths of the hypersensitive trasitions exhibit a corresponding increase. It is hoped that the new method may serve for the Judd-Ofelt quantitative analysis of powdered rare earth compounds.

Abstract:Crystals of the complexes of Tryptophan with Sm(III), Tb(III) and Dy(III) were synthesized and the photoacoustic (PA) spectra in the UV–vis region were recorded. The PA intensities of the central lanthanide ions are interpreted in terms of the probability of nonradiative transitions. It is found that the PA intensity of the ligand bears a relation to the intramolecular energy transfer process. For the title complexes, the different PA intensities of the ligand, tryptophan, are interpreted by comparison with the fluorescence spectra. The relaxation process models are also studied based on the PA and fluorescence spectra.

Abstract:Photoacoustic (PA) spectra of coprecipitates Tb3+-Ln(3+)-Sal complexes are reported (Sal: salicylic acid; Ln(3+):Gd3+, or Nd3+). For Tb3+-Gd3+-Sal coprecipitates, the PA intensity in the region of ligand absorption decreases firstly with increasing the concentration of Gd3+, and then increases. For Tb3+-Nd3+-Sal coprecipitates, the PA intensity of the ligand increases remarkably. The difference in PA intensities is interpreted in terms of probability of nonradiative transitions. Combined with PA phase shifts, which are directly related to the relaxation processes, the luminescence enhancement and quenching phenomena of the coprecipitates are discussed by two aspects: radiative and nonradiative processes. Abstract:Several kinds of lanthanide complexes with glycine, alanine, phenylalanine, and tryptophan were synthesized and their photoacoustic (PA) spectra were measured. For the complexes of weakly fluorescent lanthanide ions with amino acids, the PA spectra reflect the influences of the ligands on the energy levels of lanthanide ions, whereas for the complexes of fluorescent lanthanide ions with amino acids, the PA spectra can be used to study the energy transfer from aromatic amino acids to lanthanide ions. At last, separating the overlapping peaks of lanthanide complex with tryptophan using the PA phase resolved method is introduced.

Abstract:Lanthanide phenanthroline (phen) complexes $\mathrm{Eu(phen)}_{2}\mathrm{Cl}_{3}{\cdot } \mathrm{2H}_{2}\mathrm{O}$ and $\mathrm{Nd(phen)}_{2}\mathrm{Cl}_{3}{\cdot } \mathrm{2H}_{2}\mathrm{O}$ were incorporated into a silica matrix by an ultrasonic assisted sol–gel method. In the region of ligand absorption, the photoacoustic (PA) intensity for a lanthanide complex is the same as in wet gels. Upon heat treatment at 120$\,^{\circ }$C, however, the PA intensity of a $\mathrm{Nd(phen)}_{2}\mathrm{Cl}_{3}{\cdot }\mathrm{2H}_{2}$O-doped sample is much larger than that of a $\mathrm{Eu(phen)}_{2}\mathrm{Cl}_{3} {\cdot } \mathrm{2H}_{2}$O-doped sample. The characteristic emissions of $\mathrm{Eu}^{3+}$ complex-doped samples were used to interpret the stability of the complex in silica matrices. The luminescence spectra are consistent with the PA results. The study indicates that phen can only coordinate with lanthanide ions in a silica matrix after a suitable heat treatment. Moreover, the covalency parameters and PA bands of f–f transionts of $\mathrm{Nd}^{3+}$ have been used to study the formation of the complex in a silica matrix.

Abstract:Photoacoustic (PA) spectra of Eu(TTA)3·Phen and Eu0.8Gd0.2(TTA)3·Phen (TTA: thenoyltrifluoroacetone; Phen: phenanthroline) complex powders and their doped silica gels are reported. The PA absorption of the ligand of Eu(TTA)3·Phen is stronger than that of Eu0.8Gd0.2(TTA)3·Phen for complex powders. For the PA intensity of the complexes in silica gels, the reverse is true. This indicates that the addition of Gd3+ ion changes the relaxation processes of the europium ternary complex and that the relaxation processes of ternary complexes are different in the two kinds of solid state. The changes of the fluorescence spectra turn out to be complementary to the PA spectra. Eu0.8Gd0.2(TTA)3·Phen was prepared by coprecipitation, the luminescence of Eu3+ is enhanced by an intermolecular energy transfer process. In the silica gel doped with Eu0.8Gd0.2(TTA)3·Phen, complex molecules are trapped in the pores and isolated from each other. The fluorescence intensity of Eu3+ decreases with the replacement of Eu3+ by Gd3+ ion.

Abstract:Lanthanide complexes Tb (p-ABA)(3) center dot H2O and Ln (p-ABA)(3) " H2O (p-ABA = p-aminobenzoic acid; Ln = Y or Er) co-doped silica samples were prepared. It was found that the characteristic emissions of Tb3+ in the silica samples increase with the addition of Y(p-ABA)(3) center dot H2O, while the reverse is true with the addition of Er(p-ABA)(3) center dot H2O. Compared with only Tb3+ complex doped silica sample, the photoacoustic intensity in the region of the ligand absorption decreases for Tb3+ and Y3+ complexes co-doped sample, and increases for Tb3+ and Er3+ complexes co-doped sample. The relative luminescence quantum yields and lifetime for the co-doped samples were determined, and the possible mechanism for the co-luminescence phenomena was interpreted from two aspects; radiative and nonradiative processes. Lanthanide complexes doped. wet silica gels, which have undergone aging and drying at room temperature only, were also studied. The results indicate that p-ABA does not coordinate with the lanthanide ions in the silica gels without a suitable heat treatment. The co-luminescence effect found in this work will contribute the better design of new type of luminescence materials.

Abstract:Recently, photoacoustic (PA) spectroscopy has emerged as a valuable tool for the study of various kinds of materials. Herein, we present the results of PA spectral studies of chemical materials. First, the PA study on luminescent materials in condensed states is reported. Combining with the luminescence technique, the energy transfer efficiency and the intrinsic luminescence quantum yield are determined for a europium (III) complex in the glassy state, smectic A phase, and the isotropic liquid. Second, neodymium (III) compounds with l -glycine, l -phenylalanine, and l -tryptophan are synthesized and their PA spectra are reported. The nephelauxetic ratio and Sinha parameter are calculated based on the PA spectra. The environmental effect on the f–f transitions of the neodymium(III) ion is also studied.

Abstract:. Lanthanide complexes Ln(bta) 3 L 2 (Ln 3+ : Eu 3+ , Tb 3+ and Ho 3+ ; bta: benzoyltrifluoroacetonate; L: N-octadecyl-2-hydroxy-4-tetradecyloxybenzal- dimine) are synthesized. Their photoacoustic (PA) spectra are reported and interpreted. In the region of ligand absorption, PA intensity increases for Eu(bta) 3 L 2 , Tb(bta) 3 L 2 and Ho(bta) 3 L 2 , respectively. It is found that the PA intensity of the ligand bears a relation to the intramolecular energy transfer process. By comparison with luminescence spectra, the energy transfer process and phase transition of lanthanide complexes are studied from two aspects: radiative and nonradiative processes.

Synthesis, Characterization and Fluorescence of Rare Earth Nitrate Complexes with Triaza-Crown Ether Derivative

Abstract:Four new complexes of rare earths with a triaza-crown ether (L) derived from N3O2-macro cycle 1,12,15-triaza-3, 4: 9,10-dibenzo-5, 8-dioxacycloheptadecane were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, molar conductance, TG-DTA analysis and fluorescence spectra. The composition of the complexes determined as [RE(NO3)3L*3H2O]*H2O (RE=Sm, Eu, Tb and Dy). It is found that Sm3+, Eu3+, Tb3+ and Dy3+ complexes all show strong fluorescence emission in the solid state. Among these complexes, Tb3+ complex has the strongest luminescence intensity. It shows that the ligand L triplet state energy matches 5D4 energy level of Tb3+. In the Eu3+ complex, η(5D0→7F2/5D0→7F1) is 2.6, which indicates that Eu3+ locates at the asymmetric coordination field.

Abstract:The crystal structure of lanthanum 4-amino-benzenesulfonate complex has been determined by X-ray diffraction. The crystal data indicate that lanthanum and neodymium 4-amino-benzenesulfonates are isomorphous. The FT-IR spectroscopic study of rare earth 4-amino-benzenesulfonate complexes showed that the spectra of light rare earth (La, Nd, Sm, Eu) complexes are similar and so are the spectra of heavy rare earth (Dy, Er, Y) complexes. There are remarkable differences between the spectra of light rare earth and heavy rare earth complexes. Based on above results, we infer that light rare earth (La, Nd, Sm, Eu) complexes are isomorphous and three heavy rare earth (Dy, Er, Y) complexes are of a different structure but also isomorphous.
