Abstract:The applicability of several density functional formulas to theoretical calculations of lanthanide chalcogenides has been investigated by performing calculations on LnL( Ln= La, Gd, Lu; L=O, St Set Te). The influence of relativistic effects has been considered. The calculated results show that the relativistic effects result in variation of bond lengths from +2 pm to -3 pm, and result in bond energy decrease by 0.4 similar to 0.6 eV, and there is no obvious dependance on the adopted density functional formulas, The difference of density functional formulas does not obviously affect the calculated bond lengths, but significantly influence the calculated bond energies, It is found that LDA(VWN) +PW86x scheme gives the best bond energy. The gradient correction of exchange energy obviously improves the calculated bond energies, whereas the gradient correction of correlation energy worsen the results, in consistency with previous conclusions. The simple X alpha formula gives pretty good calculated bond energies. Taking the relativistic effects and suitable gradient corrections into account,the density-functional method gives satisfactory bond lengths, while the calculated bond energies are still too high, although the relative deviation does not exceed 20%.

Abstract:The relativistic density functional computational methods applicable to the calculation of systems containing heavy elements with high accuracy are simply reviewed. In connection with the researches carried out in our laboratory, the description is concentrated on the high accurate four-component relativistic density functional methods with relativistic effects taken into account strictly, and the two-component or scalar relativistic density functional methods with relativistic effects considered approximately, involving the zero-order regular approximation (ZORA) method and its improved variants, the singularity excluded approximate expansion (SEAX) method, and the jointed two component-scalar relativistic (or non-relativistic) approach applicable to the calculations of large systems locally containing heavy elements.

Abstract:International Journal of Modern Physics E, Ahead of Print. In this paper, we have developed relativistic and nonrelativistic energy density functionals within the local density approximation, transitioning from momentum space to coordinate space. Utilizing the Coherent Density Fluctuation Model, these functionals predict shell and sub-shell closures across isotopic and isotonic chains. Our focus has been on refining fitting procedures and testing these functionals on selected nuclei. Previously, we compared our energy density functionals for E-RMF forces G3 and IOPB-I with the Brückner energy density functional. Our results highlighted significant advantages, particularly in accurately predicting peaks in the symmetry energy curve at magic neutron numbers within heavy and superheavy regions. This success motivates us to extend our fitting procedure for both the relativistic mean field (E-RMF) and nonrelativistic Skyrme–Hartree–Fock (SHF) parameter sets. To further ensure the reliability of our newly fitted functionals, we establish Pearson-type correlations between the symmetry energy and its derivatives.

Abstract:The zeroth-order regular approximation (ZORA) to the Dirac Hamiltonian and the Douglas–Kroll–Hess Hamiltonian (DKH) in their scalar-relativistic formulation have been implemented in a density functional code. The two approaches are compared on the same footing, i.e., using the same exchange-correlation functionals, basis sets and grids for numerical integration. The monohydrides, monooxides and monofluorides of La, Lu, Ac and Lr have been selected for a calibration study. Both methods yield very consistent results for bond lengths, binding energies and vibrational constants. Comparison is also made to experimental data as well as other relativistic all-electron and pseudopotential results.

Abstract:The chemistry of f-electrons in lanthanide and actinide materials is yet to be fully rationalized. Quantum-mechanical simulations can provide useful complementary insight to that obtained from experiments. The quantum theory of atoms in molecules and crystals (QTAIMAC), through thorough topological analysis of the electron density (often complemented by that of its Laplacian) constitutes a general and robust theoretical framework to analyze chemical bonding features from a computed wave function. Here, we present the extension of the Topond module (previously limited to work in terms of s-, p- and d-type basis functions only) of the Crystal program to f- and g-type basis functions within the linear combination of atomic orbitals (LCAO) approach. This allows for an effective QTAIMAC analysis of chemical bonding of lanthanide and actinide materials. The new implemented algorithms are applied to the analysis of the spatial distribution of the electron density and its Laplacian of the cesium uranyl chloride, Cs2UO2Cl4, crystal. Discrepancies between the present theoretical description of chemical bonding and that obtained from a previously reconstructed electron density by experimental X-ray diffraction are illustrated and discussed.

Abstract:The method joining 2-component and scalar relativistic density functional calculations is introduced to simplify the electronic structure calculations of large molecules with some parts containing heavy elements. It is based on the relativistic ZORA density functional method with the atomic potential approximation. The validity of the method is examined through calculations of several molecules containing heavy elements. The calculated molecular total energies, energies of decomposition reactions and electron population on constituent atoms by the method joining 2-component and scalar density functional calculations are in excellent accordance with those from normal 2-component relativistic density functional calculations for the corresponding molecules. The deviation is so small that replacing the latter with the former would not lower the calculation accuracy to a sensible extent for the density functional calculations based on the existent approximate density functionals. Thus the method joining 2-component and scalar relativistic density functional calculations can be used in most theoretical studies by means of density functional theory with relativistic effects taken into account. The method can be implemented with ease and is flexible in use. It may be an attractive approach for the theoretical study of large systems with some parts containing heavy elements.

Abstract:We extend our previous formulation of time-dependent four-component relativistic density-functional theory [J. Gao, W. Liu, B. Song, and C. Liu, J. Chem. Phys. 121, 6658 (2004)] by using a noncollinear form for the exchange-correlation kernel. The new formalism can deal with excited states involving moment (spin)-flipped configurations which are otherwise not accessible with ordinary exchange-correlation functionals. As a first application, the global potential-energy curves of 16 low-lying omega omega-coupled electronic states of the AuH molecule have been investigated. The derived spectroscopic parameters, including the adiabatic and vertical excitation energies, equilibrium bond lengths, harmonic and anharmonic vibrational constants, fundamental frequencies, and dissociation energies, are grossly in good agreement with those of ab initio multireference second-order perturbation theory and the available experimental data. Abstract:An exchange-correlation energy functional beyond the local density approximation, based on the exchange-correlation kernel of the homogeneous electron gas and originally introduced by Kohn and Sham, is considered for electronic structure calculations of semiconductors and atoms. Calculations are carried out for diamond, silicon, silicon carbide and gallium arsenide. The lattice constants and gaps show a small improvement with respect to the LDA results. However, the corresponding corrections to the total energy of the isolated atoms are not large enough to yield a substantial improvement for the cohesive energy of solids, which remains hence overestimated as in the LDA.

A General and Transferable Local Hybrid Functional for Electronic Structure Theory and Many-Fermion Approaches

Abstract:Density functional theory has become the workhorse of quantum physics, chemistry, and materials science. Within these fields, a broad range of applications needs to be covered. These applications range from solids to molecular systems, from organic to inorganic chemistry, or even from electrons to other fermions such as protons or muons. This is emphasized by the plethora of density functional approximations that have been developed for various cases. In this work, a new local hybrid exchange-correlation density functional is constructed from first principles, promoting generality and transferability. We show that constraint satisfaction can be achieved even for admixtures with full exact exchange, without sacrificing accuracy. The performance of the new functional for electronic structure theory is assessed for thermochemical properties, excitation energies, Mössbauer isomer shifts, NMR spin--spin coupling constants, NMR shieldings and shifts, magnetizabilities, as well as EPR hyperfine coupling constants. Here, the new density functional shows excellent performance throughout all tests and is numerically robust only requiring small grids for converged results. Additionally, the functional can be easily generalized to arbitrary fermions as shown for electron-proton correlation energies. Therefore, we outline that density functionals generated in this way are general purpose tools for quantum mechanical studies.

Analytical Energy Gradient Evaluation in Relativistic and Nonrelativistic Density Functional Calculations

Abstract:The expressions of analytical energy gradients in density functional theory and their implementation in programs are reported. The evaluation of analytical energy gradients can be carried out in the fully 4-component relativistic, approximate relativistic, and nonrelativistic density functional calculations under local density approximation or general gradient approximation with or without frozen core approximation using different basis sets in our programs. The translational invariance condition and the fact that the one-center terms do not contribute to the energy gradients are utilized to improve the calculation accuracy and to reduce the computational effort. The calculated results of energy gradients and optimized geometry as well as atomization energies of some molecules by the analytical gradient method are in very good agreement with results obtained by the numerical derivative method.

Abstract:Abstract Over the past decades, the relativistic density functional theory has been greatly developed and widely applied to investigate a variety of nuclear phenomena. In this paper, we briefly review the concept of covariant density functional theory in nuclear physics with a few latest applications in describing nuclear ground-state and excitation properties as well as nuclear dynamics. Moreover, attempts to build a microscopic and universal density functional are also discussed in terms of the successful fully self-consistent relativistic Brueckner–Hartree–Fock calculations.
Density functional theory and non-relativistic photoelectric effects in the few-electron atomic systems

Abstract:Closed analytical formulas are derived for the differential and total cross sections of the non-relativistic photoelectric effect in the three main classes of few-electron atomic systems: (1) neutral atoms and positively charged atomic ions which contain more than one bound electron, (2) negatively charged atomic ions, and (3) one-electron atoms and ions. Our procedure developed in this study is a combination of QED methods and results of the density functional theory obtained for atoms and ions. In all these systems the photoelectric effect is considered as photodetachment of the outer-most electron and our analysis is based on the results of density functional theory obtained for the electron density (radial) distribution in these atomic systems. Analytical formulas (similar to ours) for the differential and total cross sections of photoelectric effect for atomic systems from classes (1) and (2) have never been produced in earlier studies.

Abstract:Time-dependent four-component relativistic density functional theory within the linear response regime is developed for calculating excitation energies of heavy element containing systems. Since spin is no longer a good quantum number in this context, we resort to time-reversal adapted Kramers basis when deriving the coupled Dirac-Kohn-Sham equation. The particular implementation of the formalism into the Beijing density functional program package utilizes the multipolar expansion of the induced density to facilitate the construction of the induced Coulomb potential. As the first application, pilot calculations on the valence excitation energies and fine structures of the rare gas (Ne to Rn) and Group 12 (Zn to Hg) atoms are reported. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first time to be able to account for spin-orbit coupling within time-dependent density functional theory for excitation energies. Abstract:Kohn–Sham density functional theory has been the most popular method in electronic structure calculations. To fulfill the increasing accuracy requirements, new approximate functionals are needed to address key issues in existing approximations. It is well known that nonlocal components are crucial. Current nonlocal functionals mostly require orbital dependence such as in Hartree–Fock exchange and many-body perturbation correlation energy, which, however, leads to higher computational costs. Deviating from this pathway, we describe functional nonlocality in a new approach. By partitioning the total density to atom-centered local densities, a many-body expansion is proposed. This many-body expansion can be truncated at one-body contributions, if a base functional is used and an energy correction is approximated. The contribution from each atom-centered local density is a single finite-range nonlocal functional that is universal for all atoms. We then use machine learning to develop this universal atom-centered functional. Parameters in this functional are determined by fitting to data that are produced by high-level theories. Extensive tests on several different test sets, which include reaction energies, reaction barrier heights, and non-covalent interaction energies, show that the new functional, with only the density as the basic variable, can produce results comparable to the best-performing double-hybrid functionals, (for example, for the thermochemistry test set selected from the GMTKN55 database, BLYP based machine learning functional gives a weighted total mean absolute deviations of 3.33 kcal/mol, while DSD-BLYP-D3(BJ) gives 3.28 kcal/mol) with a lower computational cost. This opens a new pathway to nonlocal functional development and applications.

Abstract:The nuclear waste problem is one of the main interests of the rare earth and actinide elements chemistry. Studies of Actinide-containing compounds are at the frontier of the applications of current theoretical methods due to the need to consider relativistic effects and approximations to the Dirac equation in them. Here, we employ four-component relativistic quantum calculations and scalar approximations to understand the contribution of f-type atomic orbitals in the chemical bonding of actinides (Ac) to organic ligands. We studied the relativistic quantum structure of an isostructural family made of Plutonium (Pu), Americium (Am), Californium (Cf), and Berkelium (Bk) atoms with the redox-active model ligand; DOPO (2,4,6,8-tetra-tert-butyl-1-oxo-1H-phenoxazin-9-olate). Crystallographic structures were available to validate our calculations for all mentioned elements except for Cf. In short, state-of-the-art relativistic calculations were performed at different levels of theory to investigate the relativistic effects and electron correlations on geometrical structures and bonding energies of $Ac$-DOPO$_3$ complexes ($Ac$=Pu, Am, Cf, Bk) : 1) the scalar relativistic zeroth order regular approximation (ZORA) within the hybrid density functional theory (DFT) and 2) the four-component Dirac equation with the Dirac-Hartree-Fock (4c-DHF) and L\'evy-Leblond (LL) Hamiltonians. We show that scalar DFT-ZORA could be used as an efficient theoretical approximation to first approximate the geometry and electronic properties of actinides which are difficult to synthesize or characterize; but knowing that the higher levels of theory, like the 4c-DHF, gives closer results to experiments than the scalar DFT-ZORA. We also performed spin-free calculations of geometric parameters for the Americium and Berkelium compounds.
Relativistic Linear Response in Quantum-Electrodynamical Density Functional Theory

Abstract:We present the theoretical derivation and numerical implementation of the linear response equations for relativistic quantum electrodynamical density functional theory (QEDFT). In contrast to previous works based on the Pauli-Fierz Hamiltonian, our approach describes electrons interacting with photonic cavity modes at the four-component Dirac-Kohn-Sham level, derived from fully relativistic QED through a series of established approximations. Moreover, we show that a new type of spin-orbit-like (SO) cavity-mediated interaction appears under the relativistic description of the coupling of matter with quantized cavity modes. Benchmark calculations performed for atoms of group 12 elements (Zn, Cd, Hg) demonstrate how a relativistic treatment enables the description of exciton polaritons which arise from the hybridization of formally forbidden singlet-triplet transitions with cavity modes. For atoms in cavities tuned on resonance with a singlet-triplet transition we discover a significant interplay between SO effects and coupling to an off-resonant intense singlet-singlet transition. This dynamic relationship highlights the crucial role of ab initio approaches in understanding cavity quantum electrodynamics. Finally, using the mercury porphyrin complex as an example, we show that relativistic linear response QEDFT provides computationally feasible first-principles calculations of polaritonic states in large heavy element-containing molecules of chemical interest.

Relativistic materials from an alternative viewpoint

Abstract:Electrons in materials containing heavy elements are fundamentally relativistic and should in principle be described using the Dirac equation. However, the current standard for treatment of electrons in such materials involves density functional theory methods originally formulated from the Schrödinger equation. While some extensions of the Schrödinger-based formulation have been explored, such as the scalar relativistic approximation with or without spin-orbit coupling, these solutions do not provide a way to fully account for all relativistic effects of electrons, and the language used to describe such solutions are still based in the language of the Schrödinger equation. In this article, we provide a different method for translating between the Dirac and Schrödinger viewpoints in the context of a Coulomb potential. By retaining the Dirac four-vector notation and terminology in taking the non-relativistic limit, we see a much deeper connection between the Dirac and Schrödinger equation solutions that allow us to more directly compare the effects of relativity in the angular and radial functions. Through this viewpoint, we introduce the concepts of densitals and Dirac spherical harmonics that allow us to translate more easily between the Dirac and Schrödinger solutions. These concepts allow us to establish a useful language for discussing relativistic effects in materials containing elements throughout the full periodic table and thereby enable a more fundamental understanding of the effects of relativity on electronic structure.

Abstract:The inclusion of nucleonic exchange energy has been a long-standing challenge for the relativistic density functional theory (RDFT) in nuclear physics. We propose an orbital-dependent relativistic Kohn-Sham density functional theory to incorporate the exchange energy with local Lorentz scalar and vector potentials. The relativistic optimized effective potential equations for the local exchange potentials are derived and solved efficiently. The obtained binding energies and charge radii for nuclei are benchmarked with the results given by the traditional relativistic Hartree-Fock approach, which involves complicated nonlocal potentials. It demonstrates that the present framework is not only accurate but also efficient.

Abstract:We report the combination of the Amsterdam density-functional relativistic quantum-chemistry program and electron-momentum spectroscopy to interpret electronic structures of molecules. We calculate momentum profiles of molecular orbital using the two-component relativistic theory. The momentum profiles of the complete valence shell orbitals of I-2 and Au-2 molecules are obtained in comparison between the nonrelativistic and relativistic calculations. The theoretical results show that relativistic effects have significant influences on the momentum distributions for valence orbitals of I-2 and Au-2. In order to verify the validity of the calculations, the high-resolution experimental momentum distributions of the 5P(3/2) and 5P(1/2) states of xenon are presented in comparison with relativistic quantum-chemistry theories.
