Abstract:Three new absorption bands, appearing around 670, 865 and 980 nm, are observed in BaFCl:Eu2+ phosphors. They are ascribed to F aggregates formed by association of F centers or by trapping of electrons to the primary Fn+ (n = 2,3,4) centers. The growth curves of F and F-aggregated centers are similar and may be divided into three stages. The photostimulated luminescence (PSL) decays by stimulation into the absorption bands of F centers and of F aggregates are different; the former decay logarithmically and the latter decay hyperbolically. Some non-radiative processes related to F aggregates, such as electron migration, occur accompanying the PSL process, which may reduce the PSL efficiency and sensitivity of the phosphors.

Abstract:The Eu2+‐doped glasses and glass ceramics containing SrF2 nanocrystals were prepared and their luminescence properties were investigated. The formation of SrF2 nanocrystals in glass ceramics was confirmed by X‐ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The melting in a reducing atmosphere and then the crystallization of glass resulted in the reduction of almost all Eu3+ ions to Eu2+ ions in the glass ceramics. The Eu2+‐doped glass ceramics containing SrF2 nanocrystals exhibited a much stronger broad blue emission band and a longer lifetime of excited state than the glasses.

Abstract:Reduction of Eu3+ -> Eu2+ and luminescence of europium (Eu) ions in glass ceramics containing SrF2 nanocrystals have been investigated. The formation of SrF2 nanocrystals in glass ceramics was confirmed by Xray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Blue luminescence of the Eu2+ ions was observed in the Eu doped glass ceramics which were prepared by the heat treatment of the glass in air atmosphere. The double-exponential decay curves of D-5(0) state of Eu3+ in the Eu doped glass ceramics indicated that there were two different surroundings of the Eu ions in the glass ceramics. Abstract:Synthesis and luminescence properties of GdF3:Ce3+, Ln(3+) (Ln(3+)=Eu3+, Tb3+, Dy3+, Sm3+) nanocrystals were investigated. The energy transfer efficiencies between Ce3+ ions and Tb3+ ions, Dy3+ ions, Eu3+ ions were relatively higher than that between Ce3+ ions and Sm3+ ions. Multicolor emissions could be obtained using 254 nm light as excitation source. Such multicolor emissions could be used as multicolor bio-label.

Abstract:We report data on the luminescence spectra associated with photochromic centers in X-ray irradiated calcium fluoride crystals doped with Lu ions. Irradiation in low energy photochromic centers absorption band excites emission, which can be identify with transitions into photochromic centers. Ab initio calculation of absorption spectrum of photochromic center agrees rather well with experimental data.

Abstract:It is important to finely tune the upconversion (UC) properties through controlling size and structure of upconversion nanocrystals (UCNCs) and improve their efficiency. Recently, it was reported that the UC luminescence (UCL) intensity of NaLuF4:Yb3+, Er3+ UCNCs could be tremendously improved compared to the most efficient NaYF4:Yb3+, Er3+ under 980 nm excitation. In this paper, we first studied the varied size control and phase transition properties of NaREF4:Yb3+, Er3+ (RE = Y, Lu) UCNCs prepared by the solvothermal method. Then, we discussed if the UCL intensity of NaLuF4:Yb3+, Er3+ could be universally improved over that of NaYF4:Yb3+, Er3+ UCNCs. Furthermore, the color tuning properties of the NaREF4:Yb3+, Er3+ family on crystalline phase, particle size, doping concentration and phonon energy were systemically discussed. It is very interesting to observe that in heavily doped cubic NaREF4:Yb3+, Er3+, the color of UCL changed from red to green with decreasing particle size, while on the contrary, in hexagonal phase the color of UCL changed from green to red. A unit model was proposed to explain the phase-dependent, size-dependent color tuning UCL behavior of NaREF4:Yb3+, Er3+.

Abstract:The efficient new red emitting scheelite-type compounds, Eu3+-doped (5 mol.%) Y(Zr0.5W0.5)O4, Lu(Zr0.5W0.5)O4 and Y(Y1/3W2/3)O4, were successfully prepared. The crystal structure, photoluminescence and decay properties of the obtained phosphors were investigated. Shifts of the peaks in the XRD patterns were observed when Y3+ sites in the host were occupied by Lu3+ or Zr/W sites were occupied by Y/W. As a result of the crystallographic occupancy of Eu3+ located at the cation positions without inversion symmetry, under O→Zr/W and O→Eu3+ ligand-to-metal charge-transfer states (LMCT) excitation at 300 nm, the emission spectra of these compounds presented5D0→7F2 transition for Eu3+ at 612 nm. The diagram of Eu3+ energy levels in these new scheelite-type compounds and the energy transfer processes were discussed.

Abstract:In this article, Eu-activated CaF2 single crystals were synthesized by Bridgman-Stockbarge method. The dependence of photoluminescence properties of Eu: CaF2 crystals in UV-Vis regions on EuF3 doping concentrations were investigated. While the EuF3 doping concentration is increased from 0.6% to 6.0%, the CIE (Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage) color coordinates of Eu: CaF2 crystals can be tuned from (0.28, 0.12) to (0.60, 0.38), corresponding to the luminescence color from blue to orange. XPS (X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy) measurements indicated that Eu2+ and Eu3+ ions both existed in the crystals. With EuF3 doping concentration increasing, the proportion of Eu3+ ions increase from 16.73% to 39.00%, while that of Eu2+ ions decrease from 83.27% to 61.00%. Moreover, the integrated intensity ratio (R) of the 614 nm to 593 nm of Eu3+ ions increase from 0.38 to 0.44, indicating the local lattice environment symmetry of Eu3+ ions become lower with higher EuF3 doping concentrations. Furthermore, the CIE chromaticity coordinates of Eu: CaF2 crystals greatly depend on the excitation wavelength. The warm white-light emission has been realized in 0.6%Eu: CaF2 crystal when the excitation wavelength is around 322 nm.
A neoteric approach to achieve CaF2:Eu2+/3+ one-dimensional nanostructures with direct white light emission and color-tuned photoluminescence

Abstract:CaF2:Eu2+/3+ one-dimensional nanostructures including nanofibers, hollow nanofibers and nanobelts are respectively constructed via a newly-proposed technique of high-efficient combination of electrospinning with bi-crucible fluorinating technique. The diameters of CaF2:Eu2+/3+ nanofibers and hollow nanofibers are respectively 328 ± 2 nm and 290 ± 5 nm, and the width and thickness of nanobelts are 1.07 ± 0.013 μm and 150 nm, respectively. Under the excitation of 276-nm or 320-nm ultraviolet light, CaF2:Eu2+/3+ nanostructures exhibit characteristic emission peaks at 385 nm (purple) and 615 nm (red) assigned to 4f65 d1 (t2g)→8S7/2 energy levels transition of Eu2+ ions and 5D0→7F2 energy levels transitions of Eu3+ ions, respectively. XPS data further confirm the coexistence and proportion of Eu2+ and Eu3+ in the samples. CaF2:9%Eu2+/3+ nanofibers possess the highest luminescent intensity. White-emitting and color-tunable photoluminescence performance of CaF2:Eu2+/3+ nanostructures are realized by regulating the proportion of Eu2+ to Eu3+ ions, and luminescence mechanism is also proposed. Further, it is satisfactorily found that the proportion of Eu2+ to Eu3+ ions can be modulated by adjusting the Eu-doped concentration and calcination temperature. The detailed formation mechanisms of CaF2:Eu2+/3+ one-dimensional nanostructures are advanced, and the neoteric fabrication technique is successfully established. This design conception and construction strategy can provide some guidance for fabricating other one-dimensional nanostructures.

Underestimated Color Centers: Defects as Useful Reducing Agents in Lanthanide‐Activated Luminescent Materials

Abstract:Several inorganic hosts such as SrB 4 O 7 or certain nitrides are known to intrinsically stabilize Eu 2+ even upon doping with a Eu 3+ ‐based precursor and no employment of any reducing conditions during synthesis. Although this somewhat alchemistic concept has already been known for a long time in the field of phosphor synthesis, the mechanistic details of the intrinsic reductive action of certain hosts are only scarcely understood. Herein, we aim to demonstrate first clear experimental evidence that trapped charge carriers such as color centers can also act as potential redox partners to stabilize certain oxidation states of activators taking Eu‐activated CsMgCl 3 and CsMgBr 3 as a representative example. Upon intentional doping with EuCl 3 and without employment of any reducing conditions during the synthesis, yet dominant cyan or green luminescence related to the presence of Eu 2+ ions was observed instead, respectively. Photoluminescence spectroscopy at 10 K revealed that this intrinsically occurring reduction could be clearly correlated to the presence of impurity‐localized color centers. Although defects are otherwise typically undesired in phosphors, this study demonstrates that their role may be underestimated and they could be used on purpose in the preparation of selected inorganic phosphors.

Abstract:Temperature behaviors of X-ray luminescence (XL), photoluminescence (PL), photostitnulated luminescence, and thermoluminescence (TL) were studied in BaFCl:Eu2+ single crystals from room temperature to liquid nitrogen temperature. Six emissions at 275, 315, 365, 385, 435, and 500 nm were observed in the XL spectra and are attributed to Cl excitons, Vk(Cl-2(-)), the 4f(6)5d(1) -> ((2)e(g)) -> 4f(7) (S-8(7/2)) transition of Eu2+, and oxygen vacancies, respectively. Three emission peaks at 315, 365, and 390 rim were observed in the PL and TL measurements. These three emissions are from the transitions of 4f(7)(6I(7/2)) -> 4f(7)(S-8(7/2)) -> 4f(7)(P-6(7/2)) -> 4f(7)(S-8(7/2)), and 4f(6)5d(1) ((2)e(g)) -> 4(f)(S-8(7/2)) of Eu2+, respectively. In our measurements, we observed that the emission of Eu2+ increases in intensity upon beta-irradiation and did not see any signals related to Eu3+ ions, which indicates that Eu2+ ions might not be oxidized to Eu3+ upon X-ray or beta-irradiation. Instead, the color centers, Cl excitons, and oxygen defects are created and are stable at room temperature, and they might play a key role in the storage luminescence.

Radiation Effects and Defects in Solids

Abstract:The TL, XL, PTTL and OSL of BaFCl:Eu2+ and SrFCl:Eu2+ were studied. The PTTL stimulation spectra of BaFCl:Eu+ had maxima at the Eu3+, Eu2+ absorption bands and at the long wavelength tail off absorption. The PTTL appeared at the same temperatures and with the same thermal activation energies as the TL peaks, indicating that the same defects are responsible for the trapping states. The TL emission spectra of the BaFCl: Eu2+ crystals showed narrow bands at 315 and 365 nm and a broader band near 435 nm, The OSL and XL showed the same bands as well a 385 nm emission. The 365 nm band also appeared in SrFCl:Eu-2 and is attributed to the emission of Eu2+.

Abstract:We have studied the color-center production in sapphire and yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) single crystals by cathodo-luminescence (CL) spectroscopy for electron energies ranging between 400 and 1250 keV in a high-voltage electron microscope. Emission spectra were collected for in-beam conditions near room temperature and at 200 K. Comparison was made with CL spectra recorded for 3-keV–20-keV electrons in a scanning electron microscope. For high-energy electrons, CL spectra for sapphire revealed broad emission bands centered at photon energies about 3.0 eV and 3.8 eV that were, respectively, assigned to oxygen vacancies (F0 and F+ centers) induced by elastic collisions, on the basis of photoluminescence (PL) data. No such bands were recorded for 3-keV and 5-keV electrons. Two similar bands were also recorded for YSZ (with 9.5 and 18 mol. % yttria) at about 2.8 eV and 4.1 eV that can be, respectively, attributed to the native oxygen vacancies (F2+ centers) and F+ centers. The 4.1-eV band was not seen for 20-keV electrons: it was only produced for high electron energies by elastic collision processes. Instead, the small side band was also found at 2.85 eV for 20-keV electrons. PL excitation contour plots of virgin and irradiated YSZ were also recorded to support our discussion on point-defect identification. CL band intensities show a maximum versus electron energy, whereas point-defect concentrations should increase due to the increase of oxygen atom displacement cross section. The effect of electron energy on the different steps of the CL process is discussed to account for such a behavior.

Abstract:The infrared upconversion and optical storage CaS:Eu1Sm thin film with red light output has been developed by electron beam deposition. The film was prepared by doubly rare earth ions doped alkaline earth sulfide CaS. Its phases and microstructure were identified by X-ray diffraction. The surface morphology of the film was observed by scanning electron microscopy. The chemical composition of the film was determined by electron probe microanalysis. The study on the optical properties of the film was presented.

Abstract:Due to the lack of intermediate levels and the large energy mismatch with Yb3+, the achievement of efficient upconversion (UC) of Eu3+ is a great challenge. Herein, intense UC emission of Eu3+ is demonstrated via controllable and efficient unidirectional energy transfer from Yb3+-Mn2+ dimers in perovskite fluoride KCdF3:Yb3+,Mn2+,Eu3+ synthesized by a facile solvothermal method. The UC emission color of KCdF3:Yb3+,Mn2+,Eu3+ can be well tuned from yellow to orange and ultimately turned into Eu3+ pure red emission by controlling the Eu3+ concentration. Moreover, a significantly prolonged Eu3+ UC emission lifetime is observed in this system, and it is ascribed to the genetic effect of the sustained resonance energy transfer from Yb3+-Mn2+ dimers to Eu3+. The pump power and temperature dependent UC behaviors further suggest that the phosphor exhibits excellent chromaticity stability. Owing to the long-lived and chromaticity stable UC luminescence, the as-prepared KCdF3:Yb3+, Mn2+,Eu3+ phosphor may be a highly suitable candidate for lifetime-encoded information encryption, anti-counterfeiting, etc.
