Abstract:Purpose. To study the treatment of undercorrection after excimer laser in situ keratomilersis (LASIK) for correcticn of moderate and high myopia. Methods. Among 612 eyes underwent LASIK, 48 eyes in 39 patients were undercorrected at 3 months. An enhancement ablation was performed in 48 eyes. Four eyes were treated within 1 month, and the other 42 eyes, between 3 and 10 months. The surgical technique includes re-opening the corneal cap and the ablation with a 193nm ArF excimer laser. The cap vas replaced to its original position. Results. The amount of undercorrection ranged from -1.50 to -11.00 diopters (spherical equivalent). The undercorrection might be observed as early as on the first postoperative day while most occurred within 1 month. The refraction was stabilized at 3 months in all eyes. In the enhancement abalation, the corneal cap was easily opened, even at the tenth postoperative month of LASIK. The patients were followed-up for 4 to 12 months after enhancement abalation, and the refraction in 42 eyes was within 1.00 D. Underecorrection of 2.50 D to 5.00 D were still observed in 6 eyes. One line of Spectacle correctd visual acuity was lost in 4eyes, 1 line was gained in 5 eyes, and 2 lines gained in 1 eye. None had corneal haze. Conclusion. LASIK is a safe, effective and predictable technique in the treatment of moderate and high myopia. Postoperative undercorrect of LASIK can be corrected by the enhancement ablation and the procedure is simple, safe and effective.
