Abstract:Domain inversion in was obtained by proton-exchange and heat treatment. The calculation of the internal electric field resulting from the proton concentration gradient was performed, the result of which can explain well our four-layered domain structure.

Abstract:The domain inversion in LiNbO3 is fabricated by proton exchange and rapid heat treatment. The proton concentration is measured by secondary-ion mass spectroscopy. A modified diffusion model is proposed, the result of which agrees well with the measured data. Comparisons with the existing models are made, which suggests that our model may be more extensively applicable.

Abstract:Experimental studies on the domain inversion in LiNbO3 by proton exchange followed by quick heat treatment was performed. The relationship between the inverted depth and the quick heat treatment conditions was investigated. Using this method, a periodically domain - inverted structure was fabricated. Abstract:Domain-inverted region in LiNbO3 single crystal were formed by proton exchange followed by heat treatment. Direct observation of the domain-inverted region is performed by using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). A charged straight 180 degrees domain boundary was revealed and compared with winding domain boundaries in LiNbO3 grown by Czochralski method. Obtained results are significant to study the mechanism of domain inversion and morphology of inversion domains.

The formation and development of, the effects of pyroelectric field on domain inversion are investigated. The proton and lithium profiles are measured by SIMS. Abstract:Experimental studies on the domain inversion in LiTaO3 by Li2O out-diffusion or proton exchange followed by heat treatment at high temperatures are performed. According to our experiments and the results previously obtained in LiNbO3, a relationship between the domain inversion and Li2O out-diffusion or proton exchange followed by heat treatment is assumed. An internal electric field model is proposed, which is based on the concentration gradient of lithium vacancies and protons. The domain inversion mechanism related to the two fabricating methods is explained for LiNbO3 (LN) and LiTaO3 (LT) by the tentative use of the model.

Abstract:This review paper reports the studies on ferroelectric domain inversion and inverse mechanism in ferroelectric and dielectric LiNbO3 and LiTaO3 single crystals by proton exchange followed by heat treatment. Secondary ion mass spectroscopy and numerical simulation of proton profile, differential scanning calorimetry, pyroelectric experiment and transmission electron microscopy were used to characterize the domain inversion. The inverse mechanism was discussed by means of an internal electric field model, which is based on the concentration gradient of proton and lithium deficiency.

Abstract:A complex domain structure in LiNbO3 is fabricated by proton exchange followed by heat treatment. Domain inversion at the +c and −c faces as well as reinversion in the inverted region near the +c surface are observed experimentally. The proton and lithium concentrations are measured by secondary ion mass spectroscopy. It is found that the proton profile peaks away from the surface due to indiffusion and outdiffusion. The domain inversion mechanism is discussed. An internal electric field model is proposed which is based on the concentration gradient of proton and lithium deficiency.

Abstract:Experimental studies on the formation of single-domain layers in a multidomain z-cut LiNbO3 crystal plate by proton exchange followed by quick heat treatment were performed. It was found that the direction of the spontaneous polarization in the single-domain layer points to the inside of the plate. To explain this phenomenon, an internal electric field model was proposed which is related to the proton concentration gradient.

Abstract:The relationship between the domain inversion and the Curie temperature of LiTaO3 has been studied. The Tc temperature of the exchanged LiTaO3 is determined to be about 585 °C by DSC measurements. Experiments show that the domain inversion can take place at temperatures either higher than or lower than the Tc of the exchanged LiTaO3, depending on the heat treatment time. It is concluded that it is the proton concentration gradient that is responsible for the domain inversion.

Abstract:ABSTRACT The temperature depolarization process has been studied in [001]-cut lead magnesium niobate-lead titanate single crystals with 33% lead titanate content by in situ visualization of as-grown domain structure evolution during zero-field heating and subsequent cooling. The phase transitions have been revealed during heat treatment. It has been shown by piezoresponse force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy that heat treatment leads to decay of maze-type as-grown domain structure into array of irregular domains with average diameter about 300 nm. Shallow etching of the surface during mechanochemical polishing has allowed keeping the surface relief corresponding to as-grown domain pattern.

Abstract:Transmission electron microscopy has been used to investigate the ((1) over bar 100) and ( (1) over bar 103) inversion domain boundaries in a ZnO film prepared by molecular beam epitaxy. The inversion domain was revealed by dark- field images and confirmed by convergent- beam electron diffraction. Interacting with a (0002) stacking fault, the inversion domain boundary in the ( (1) over bar 100) plane alters its orientation from the [0001] direction and climbs on the ( (1) over bar 103) plane to release the strain energy. These features are characterized and analysed by high- resolution electron microscopy and the geometric phase method. The findings are significant for understanding the formation and propagation of inverse domain boundaries in epitaxial ZnO films.

Abstract:We report for the first time fabrication of periodic inversion domains in LiNbO3 by a Ti in-diffusion heat treatment process. The Ti concentration distribution in the periodic domain inversion regions was studied by electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) in an attempt to confirm the relationship between the location and the shape of the domain inversion regions and their distribution. It was found that the domain inversion corresponds to the Ti concentration distribution. The periods of domain inversion and Ti distribution are the same. Mechanisms for periodic domain inversion in Ti in-diffusion into LiNbO3 are discussed.

Abstract:Domain engineering in relaxor-PT single crystals are attracting much attention both as unique physical phenomena and for potential applications in various devices. Here, the effect of initial domain state on domain switching process was explored. Different domain switching processes were illustrated by in situ observation, and the dynamic processes of domain switching were obtained by using optical current analysis. We found the samples with different initial domain states have different domain switching processes. For the sample with wide stripe 90° domain, the polarization reversal is driven by a-domain nucleation, 90° domain wall movement and c-domain growth. While, in the sample with thin stripe 90° domain, the nucleation and growth of c-domain prevailed. The influences of the initial domain state on the domain structure evolution are discussed by current analysis. Our findings are of great significance in regulating the domain switching process to meet the demand of different devices.

Abstract:Ferroelectric domain inversion in LiTaO3 single crystal has been achieved at room temperature by applied external electric field. The polarization inversion in the material exhibited different dynamic characteristics under high field (E > 20 kV/mm) and low field (E < 20 kV/mm), respectively. The inversion behaviors under high field have been studied.

Abstract:The influence of proton radiation on the achiral structural transition at 180 degrees domain walls in tetragonal ferroelectric BaTiO3 is theoretically studied in this work. The proton-induced oxygen vacancy in ferroelectrics is predicted using the Monte Carlo Simulations, which increases with the increase of the proton fluence and the energy of the incident proton. A model based on the LGD is developed to investigate the influence of oxygen vacancy which is considered as a defect dipole on the achiral structural transition of Bloch-Neel type of domain wall. Under the proton radiation, the Bloch-type of domain wall shows the character of asymmetric because of the coupling of the polarization and the electric field, while the proton radiation just changes the magnitude of the polarization in the Neel-type of domain wall.

Abstract:Aluminum nitride (AlN) has a polar crystal structure that is susceptible to electric dipolar interactions. The inversion domains in AlN, similar to those in GaN and other wurtzite-structure materials, decrease the energy associated with the electric dipolar interactions at the expense of inversion-domain boundaries, whose interface energy has not been quantified. We study the atomic structures of six different inversion-domain boundaries in AlN, and compare their interface energies from density functional theory calculations. The low-energy interfaces have atomic structures with similar bonding geometry as those in the bulk phase, while the high-energy interfaces contain N-N wrong bonds. We calculate the formation energy of an inversion domain using the interface energy and dipoles' electric-field energy, and find that the distribution of the inversion domains is an important parameter for the microstructures of AlN films. Using this thermodynamic model, it is possible to control the polarity and microstructure of AlN films by tuning the distribution of an inversion-domain nucleus and by selecting the low-energy synthesis methods.
