Abstract:Creeping solitons, which belong to the class of pulsating solitons, can be meaningful for fundamental physics owing to their fruitful nonlinear dynamics. Their characteristics in mode-locked lasers have been studied theoretically, but it is difficult to experimentally observe evolution dynamics in real time. Here, we have experimentally observed the temporal and spectral evolution dynamics of creeping solitons in a passively mode-locked fiber laser by employing time-lens and dispersive Fourier transform technique. With the aid of Raman amplification, the measured recording length of the time lens in the asynchronous mode could be substantially improved. Temporal soliton snaking motion and spectral breathing dynamics are experimentally obtained, confirming intrinsic feature of pulsation dynamics. These results display how single-shot measurements can offer new insights into ultrafast transient dynamics in nonlinear optics.

Abstract:Nonlinear interactions between neighboring pulses has always been a fundamental bottleneck in soliton transmission systems. Recently, coherent transceivers, digital signal processing (DSP) and the new nonlinear Fourier transform (NFT) theoretical framework has revived and generalized the field of soliton transmissions into nonlinear frequency division multiplexing (NFDM). We hereby demonstrate analytically and experimentally that one can considerably improve soliton transmission performance by intentionally allowing neighboring solitons to interact and collide during propagation and exchange positions at the receiver followed by standard NFT processing. This can be achieved by designing neighboring solitons' eigenvalues lambda to have opposite signs in the real part while the magnitude vertical bar R (lambda)vertical bar is optimized for a given transmission distance so that neighboring transmitted pulseswould have swapped their timing positions at the receiver. Experimental results for 6.13 Gbaud 1-soliton systems demonstrate a transmission reach improvement of 100% for 16APSK and 60% for 8PSK modulated on the b-coefficients. The proposed scheme eliminated a long-standing fundamental limitation in soliton transmissions, opened up new dimensions in transmitter signal design and receiver signal processing for nonlinear optical communication systems.

Abstract:The control technology of optical solitons has been the applications of all-optical shaping, all-optical switching and signal routing. In optical communications, the dispersion-decreasing fiber (DDF) is used in the control technology of optical solitons. At the same time, when optical solitons are propagated in the DDF, they can form the stable waveforms, which are suitable for long-distance transmission systems. In this paper, with the optical soliton control technology, we study the propagation properties of optical solitons in the DDF. It is found that we can adjust the amplitude of optical solitons, and the amplitude of vibration can be controlled by selecting the appropriate parameters of the DDF. In addition, we can change the transmission mode of optical solitons in the DDF and amplify optical solitons.

Abstract:Optical solitons in multimode fibers have been predicted 40 years ago and extensively investigated theoretically. Transmission experiments in nonlinear multimode fibers have gained renewed interest, motivated by their potential to extend the capacity of long-distance transmission systems; only in the last few years, new experiments have revealed unexpected properties of optical solitons propagating in graded-index and step-index multimode fibers, partially re-writing the existing theory. Here we provide an overview of the recent experimental, numerical and theoretical studies which revealed those new properties. It will be shown that multimode fiber solitons form with specific pulse width and energy dependent on the wavelength, and that they naturally evolve toward fundamental-mode Raman solitons. New soliton fission mechanisms, governed by the modal dispersion, will be explained. Possible applications in space-division multiplexed systems will be discussed. A recent thermodynamic approach to soliton condensation will be described.

Abstract:A mathematic model including ultrashort optical pulse generated from semiconductor laser, chirp eliminated by F-P spectral window and nonlinear optical pulse transmission was established. Numerical simulations agree well with experimental data. Furthermore, it is shown that the quasisoliton pulse with chirp eliminated can propagate steadily over a long distance.

Abstract:The error measurement for soliton communication was successfully realized. For 2.5 Gbit/s solitons transmitted over 52 km, there is no error within two hours. The key techniques the generation of ultra-short optical pulses, external modulator with high speed, amplification for electrical and optical signals, the synchronization for soliton pulses and modulation signal and dispersion allocation for normal and abnormal dispersion fibers were introduced and analyzed. The experimental phenomena were theoretically analyzed.

Abstract:The experiment of 1 Gbit/s, 52.68km soliton transmission was achieved by employing the dispersion-allocated technology. The experiment showed that dispersion-allocated soliton technology was favorable to the stable soliton transmission. Even if the direction of the input optical pulse was changed, the soliton stability and the energy to maintain the fundamental soliton were different. A proper allocation favors the stable soliton transmission.

Abstract:Soliton molecules, the bound aggregation of sub-solitons, inherently own multi-dimensional properties, thereby manifesting substantial potential in optical communications and optical data storage. However, to release the potential demands the control ability over multi-dimensions of soliton molecules, by which the valid information can be modulated onto these dimensions. Here, we propose a real-time feedback scheme governed by a dedicated-designed two-step optimization algorithm for comprehensively controlling soliton molecular multi-dimensional properties. This technique can manipulate inter-soliton separations and relative intensities of soliton molecules in a basic nonlinear-polarization-evolution-based mode-locked fiber laser. The wide tuning range over the inter-soliton separation from 2 ps to 58 ps is achieved, and seamless tuning with a precision of 0.05 ps is demonstrated. Relative intensities between solitons can also be separately controlled and a two-dimensional joint regulation is performed. Moreover, the real-time transmission over 30-km single-mode fiber is demonstrated and spectral period doubling of soliton molecules is captured, further manifesting the validity of the comprehensive control method.

Abstract:The basic experiment of soliton transmission has been successfully carried out by using standard single mode fiber. The experimental results show that more energy is needed to maintain soliton transmission. Soliton transmission by employing strong dispersion allocated technique is investigated experimentally, which shows that some of conclusions made in the previous reports are not perfect and some of them need to be further investigated.

Abstract:The pure-quartic soliton fiber laser is an innovative ultra-short pulse laser that can maintain a stable pulse shape through a balance of fourth-order dispersion and self-phase modulation effects. In comparison to conventional soliton lasers that are dominated by second-order dispersion, the mode-locked pulse energy of pure-quartic soliton lasers can be much higher, by 1-2 orders of magnitude. This provides researchers with new ideas for developing high energy and peak power fiber lasers. Here, the generation and transmission characteristics of pure-quartic solitons in nonlinear optical systems such as fiber lasers in recent years are systematically reviewed. It also explores some special transient dynamic phenomena. Furthermore, the article introduces the latest achievements of our research group in this area. Finally, the application prospect and development tendency of pure-quartic soliton fiber lasers are prospected. These results will contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the basic physical properties of pure-quartic soliton fiber lasers.

Abstract:Optical solitons are wavepackets that can sustain the shape via a nonlinear refractive index potential well. They exist in a wide range of optical systems spanning optical fibers, fiber lasers and parametric oscillators. Recently, a new type optical solitons have been observed in coherently pumped high-Q microcavities. The observation of microcavity optical solitons provides a well-controlled experimental platform to study soliton physics. Microcavity optical solitons also endow an array of highly stable spectral lines in the frequency domain, which advance the miniaturization of frequency comb systems. These soliton microcombs have been self-reference stabilized and could enable many chip-based applications including optical frequency synthesizers, optical atomic clocks, data transmission, spectrometer and LiDAR in the near future. Here, the fundamental of microcavity optical solitons was introduced, with a special focus on soliton interaction dynamics. The microcavity dual-comb measurement based applications in fast imaging and mid-infrared gas spectroscopy were also discussed.

Abstract:Wideband dissipative soliton is generated in a passively mode-locked cavity by optimizing the distribution of chromatic dispersion and gain filtering in cavity. The maximal 3 dB bandwidth of 61.1 nm is obtained. The corresponding pulse width is compressed to 222 fs with chirp, which could be further compressed to 42 fs according to the Fourier transform limitation. The signal-to-noise ratio is 80.3 dB. The single pulse energy is 0.18 nJ. The dynamics process is investigated by dispersive Fourier transformation during the building-up. The simulation investigation on dissipative soliton formation is provided according to the modified nonlinear Schrödinger equation, which are relatively consistent with the experiment. The results demonstrate that a weak normal net dispersion close to zero and efficient gain bandwidth are critical to the formation of wideband dissipative soliton.

Abstract:Optical solitons generated from fiber lasers have been extensively investigated for their good stability, narrow pulse width and high peak power, which play an indispensable role in many fields such as mechanical micromachining, optical microscope, imaging technology, optical soliton communication and so on. In this review, we summarize the development of soliton fiber laser, and the current application of soliton pulses. There are many different kinds of mode-locking technologies to generate solitons, such as actively mode-locked fiber lasers, passively mode-locked fiber lasers and hybrid mode-locked fiber lasers. During the long-term research of solitons, various types of solitons have been gradually realized under different group velocity dispersion (GVD) conditions in passively mode-locked fiber lasers, such as conventional solitons (CSs) (GVD < 0), dispersion-managed solitons (DMSs) (GVD≈0), self-similar solitons (GVD ≥ 0), dissipative solitons (DSs) (GVD > 0). And in order to apply solitons to more fields, soliton amplification and compression technologies are widely used to improve the performance of solitons, such as chirped pulse amplification (CPA) technology, self-similar soliton amplification technology, large-mode area (LMA) fiber, etc. Finally, the development prospect of soliton in the future is prospected.

Abstract:We examine the behavior of solitons in optical fibers where the dispersion is alternated between the normal and anomalous regimes. The periodic nature of the system strongly modifies the shape of the stable soliton (solitary wave) pulses, and increases their energy when compared with solitons in equivalent uniform fibers. Power enhancement factors of up to 70 are numerically observed. This leads to both an increased signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at the receiver and reduced Gordon-Haus timing jitter. The interaction between pairs of isolated pulses is examined. We also examine implementations including periodic amplification, and show that the energy scalings introduced by the amplification and the dispersion management are independent provided that the periods of the two processes are dissimilar. We show that there is an optimum dispersion compensation ratio which minimizes the received Gordon-Haus jitter. A diagrammatic technique is presented for estimating the performance of dispersion compensated soliton transmission systems.

Abstract:A stream of optical pulses, transmitted over long distances in optical fiber, will be affected by a variety of noise sources, leading to degradation in the signal-to-noise ratio. This noise accumulation sets generic capacity limits of all fiber-based optical signal transmission systems and has long been regarded as unavoidable. We report that by tailoring long-range, non-covalent inter-pulse interactions, optical solitons in a fiber laser loop can robustly couple to each other and self-assemble into supramolecular structures that exhibit long-term stability, elementary diversity and the possibility of information encoding. We demonstrate error-free transmission of such self-assembled solitonic structures over many astronomical units without any active retiming, opening up the possibility of using bit-bit interactions to overcome noise accumulation in optical fiber telecommunications and bit-storage systems.
