Abstract:In this paper, we proposed a parallel phase-only lensless optical correlator based on two pieces of Liquid Crystal on Silicon Spatial Light Modulators. Phase Fresnel Lens Array and specialized grating are implemented to realize multi-channel and multiplexed LOC. Experimental results of Chinese characters' recognitions are given as demonstration of proposed technique. High uniformity of processing channels has been verified by autocorrelation process of four same Chinese characters. The technique is programmable and adjustment of optical path could be realized without changing of optical setup. The implementations could be performed on the same configuration as single channel optical correlator without mechanical alternation.

Abstract:An optical correlator that utilizes one phase-only spatial light modulator (SLM) combined with a mirror is proposed and demonstrated. This system is compressed by displaying the input and filter pattern on different parts of the same SLM. The background noise is separated from the correlation signal by superimposing a high-frequency carrier with the filter pattern except in the zero-frequency regions, which will improve the signal-to-noise ratio in pattern recognition. Our architecture is compact and the cost is relatively low by utilizing only one SLM.

Abstract:Currently, optical responses, including photo-stimulated luminescence, thermo-luminescence, and persistent luminescence have been revealed to provide advanced security in the field of anti-counterfeiting technology. However, developing optical materials with multi-modal optical outputs is scarce but urgent. Here, a series of multimode luminescent materials of LaAlO3:0.02Pb(2+) were synthesized successfully via chemical unit co-substitution, with Li+-Ta5+, Ba2+-Ge4+ and Y3+-Sc3+ substituting for La3+-Al3+. The co-substitution makes the Pb 2+ ions be located in two kinds of different crystal environments, mainly due to the differences in bond length of Pb-O and geometry of PbO12, which are related to the changes in centroid shift, Stokes shift and crystal field splitting of Pb2+. Therefore, co-doping Li+-Ta5+, Ba2+-Ge4+ and Y3+-Sc3+ results in new emissions at 410 nm, 320 nm and 420 nm, respectively, along with the intrinsic emission of Pb2+ at 460 nm. Because of the increased deep traps, co-doping Li+-Ta5+, Ba2+-Ge4+ and Y3+-Sc3+ also enhances the NIR emission, which is related to the defect-related luminescent center of V-O(++)-Pb-La' Meanwhile, the prepared samples show various colors at different temperatures, due to the varied thermal quenching of Pb2+ emissions and the NIR emission. The prepared phosphors exhibited dynamical and multimode luminescence, and they outputted inimitable and advanced signals for optical anticounterfeiting, indicating that they are the potential materials for anticounterfeiting technology.
Unclonable Encryption‐Verification Strategy Based on Bilayer Shape Memory Photonic Crystals

Abstract:By bridging the shape memory effect of the inverse opal and the solvent‐induced coloration of the double inverse opal, bilayer photonic crystals with multiple color‐changing modes are designed and integrated. The "decryption‐verification" anti‐counterfeiting strategy based on structural color is proposed and the uniqueness of the verification code is further enhanced by creating unclonable patterns, which inspires nanophotonic cryptography. The ability to reversibly exhibit structural color patterns has positioned photonic crystals (PCs) at the forefront of anti‐counterfeiting. However, the security offered by the mere reversible display is susceptible to illicit alteration and disclosure. Herein, inspired by the electronic message captcha, bilayer photonic crystal (BPC) systems with integrated decryption and verification modules, are realized by combining inverse opal (IO) and double inverse opal (DIO) with polyacrylate polymers. When the informationized BPC is immersed in ethanol or water, the DIO layer displayed encrypted information due to the solvent‐induced ordered rearrangement of polystyrene (PS) microspheres. The verification step is established based on the different structural colors of the IO layer pattern, which result from the deformation or recovery of the macroporous skeleton induced by solvent evaporation. Moreover, through the evaporation‐induced random self‐assembly of PS@SiO2 and SiO2 microspheres, unclonable structurally colored identifying codes are created in the IO layer, ensuring the uniqueness upon the verification. The decrypted code in the DIO layer is valid only when the IO layer displays the pattern with the predetermined structural color; otherwise, it is a pseudo‐code. This structural color‐based "decryption‐verification" approach offers innovative anti‐counterfeiting applications in nanophotonics.

Abstract:A dynamic surface pattern with tunable liquid crystalline texture and fluorescence in response to external stimulus can enable information recording and reading. Therefore, such patterns are widely used in the field of information security and anti-counterfeiting. A higher level of security in anti-counterfeiting is extremely desirable but challenging, herein, the chiral liquid crystalline networks (CLCN) used for anti-counterfeiting displaying both dynamic reversible Grandjean textures and fluorescence were dexterously designed and prepared by graft copolymerization of polymethylhydrosiloxane (PMHS), nematic liquid crystal M1, chiral crosslinker M2 and organic fluorescent pyrene compounds M3. The CLCN can emit blue-fluorescence when irradiating with ultraviolet light. More importantly, the Grandjean textures and fluorescence can be simultaneously and precisely adjusted by temperature. The as-prepared CLCN display reversible Grandjean textures during the heating and cooling process from the intrinsic chiral arrangement of CLCN. The discrete pyrene chromogenic segments in CLCN matrix enable the tunable photoluminescence by temperature, furthermore, the CLCN present highly sensitive photoluminescence evolution. The dynamic reversible Grandjean textures and fluorescence make the smart materials promising candidates in anticounterfeiting, providing a versatile strategy to fabricate intelligent optical anti-counterfeiting materials.

Thermal Responsive Photonic Crystal Achieved through the Control of Light Path Guided by Phase Transition

Abstract:<p>Responsive photonic crystal is widely considered in the field of anti‐counterfeiting and information encryption because of their structural color changes caused by external stimulation. However, the response signal is usually achieved by adjusting the periodic lattice constant based on Bragg's law with volume changes. Thus, it is a great challenge to achieve the response of photonic crystals by non‐array parameter control. Herein, novel thermal responsive photonic crystal (TRPC) with low angle dependent structural color is fabricated by introducing poly(ethylene glycol) into the structure of low angle dependent SnO<sub>2</sub> inverse opal. The response is achieved through the control of light path guided by phase transition and the significant volume change caused by the change of traditional array parameters can be effectively avoided. Meanwhile, the low angle dependent structural color of TRPC can effectively reduce the interference of observation angle change to response signal caused by external thermal stimulation. Patterned responsive photonic crystals with temperature gradient response are easily obtained by combining confinement self‐assembly and direct template method, and the patterns can be presented and hidden by the control of light path, showing great potential in anti‐counterfeiting and information encryption fields.</p>

Abstract:An optic–tunable continuous liquid crystal (LC) grating is constructed with a unique photosensitive chiral dopant Tetra(n–hex–azo) featuring continuous multistable states, and it is utilized to develop multi–layer continuous phase analysis (MCPA) technology for anti‐counterfeiting. Optically tunable liquid‐crystal (LC) gratings have remarkable applications in the field of image analysis for anti‐counterfeiting. However, existing tunable LC gratings suffer from limited adjustable ranges and weak stability. The spacing variability and accuracy of the grating cannot satisfy the demands of continuous analysis. This study presents a novel approach to anti‐counterfeiting through multilayer continuous phase analysis (MCPA) based on the continuous multistable states of the LC grating. This optically tunable LC grating featuring continuous multistable states is successfully prepared using a novel optically tunable chiral dopant, tetra(n‐hex‐azo), which exhibits an exceptionally slow conformational relaxation rate (half‐life: 78.02 h). By exposing the LC grating to ultraviolet irradiation with an intensity of 0.1054 mW cm−2, the fringe spacing can be continuously and widely tuned between 0 and 250 μm, which enhances the ultraslow conformational relaxation of tetra(n‐hex‐azo). Four representative spacings (50, 55, 60, and 65 μm) are selected to construct four‐layer MCPA gratings, enabling simultaneous decoding of a four‐layer latent image for the first time. The mechanism of the MCPA grating is investigated through control experiments and theoretical simulations. This study demonstrates a facile, precise, and efficient approach for complex information encryption and anti‐counterfeiting.

Abstract:Photonic crystals (PCs) with controllable lattice structures, photonic bandgaps, and brilliant colors are fabricated by the self‐assembly of the monodispersed anisotropic metal–organic framework (MOF) ZIF‐8 particles into long‐range ordered superstructures. The shape parameter (m) of the particles is used to quantify to what degree the particle shape has deformed from that of a perfect sphere (m = 2) and that of a perfect cube (m = ∞). It is experimentally proven that m value is the key for controlling the lattice structures. Three PCs with different m values of ZIF‐8 particles (9.7, 4.7, and 2.5) are found to be simple cubic, rhombohedral, and face‐centered‐cubic structures, respectively. Different from the conventional spherical particles‐based PCs, brilliant colors can be generated from the second‐order diffraction of the nonspherical MOFs‐based PCs. Taking advantage of this unique characteristic, a new information encryption technology is developed by combing the first‐order diffraction of rhombohedral PCs and first‐second‐order diffraction of simple‐cubic PCs. This work paves a way to explore nonspherical particle‐based PCs materials with different crystal forms and provides a new insight in novel optical characteristics of the PCs, which will promote their applications in anticounterfeiting, color displays, and printings. Photonic crystals (PCs) with tunable lattice structures assembled by monodispersed anisotropic ZIF‐8 particles are fabricated through controlling the shape of nanocrystals, which can generate structural colors originated from the second‐order diffraction of light. Taking advantage of this characteristic, a new information encryption technology is developed by combing the first‐order diffraction of rhombohedral PCs and first‐second‐order diffraction of simple‐cubic PCs.
Cracking enabled unclonability in colloidal crystal patterns authenticated with computer vision

Abstract:Colloidal crystals with iridescent structural coloration have appealing applications in the fields of sensors, displays, anti-counterfeiting and etc. A serious issue accompanying the facile chemical self-assembly approach to colloidal crystals is the formation of uncontrolled and irregular cracks. In contrast to the previous efforts to avoid cracking, the unfavorable and random micro-cracks in colloidal crystals were utilized here as unclonable codes for temper-proof anti-counterfeiting. The special structural and optical characteristics of the colloidal crystal patterns assembled with monodisperse poly(styrene-methyl methacrylate-acrylic acid) core-shell nanospheres enabled multi-anti-counterfeiting modes, including angle-dependent structural colors, polarization anisotropy, besides the physically unclonable functions (PUFs) of the random micro-cracks. Moreover, by using the random cracks in the colloidal crystals as templates to guide fluorescent silica nanoparticle deposition, fluorescent anti-counterfeiting mode with PUFs was introduced. To validate the PUFs of the fluorescent micro-cracks in the colloidal crystals, a novel edge-sensitive template matching approach based on computer vision algorithm with accuracy of ~ 100% were developed, enabling ultimate security immune to forgery. The computer vision verifiable physically unclonable colloidal crystals with multi–anti-counterfeiting modes is superior to conventional photonic crystal anti-counterfeiting materials that rely on angle-dependent or tunable structural colors, and the conventional PUF labels in aspect of decorative functions, which will open a new avenue for advanced security materials with multi-functionality.

Abstract:Counterfeiting is a worldwide issue and has long troubled legitimate businesses, while the nowadays anti‐counterfeiting materials and technology are still insufficient to combat the escalating counterfeit behaviors. Inspired by the hindwing structure of Troides magellanus, we prepared a new kind of anti‐counterfeiting material taking advantage of both physical and chemical structures to display multiple optical states. The chemical units (luminescent lanthanide) were blended with physical units (monodispersed colloidal particles) and mediating molecule, which were then assembled into periodic photonic crystal structure at room temperature in less than 10 seconds through a new and scalable assembly technique called molecule‐mediated shear‐induced assembly technique (MSAT). The as‐prepared photonic crystal films feature three unique optical states, each displaying structural, fluorescent and phosphorescent color under different lighting conditions, which integrates colors from both physical and chemical origins. Furthermore, through incorporating different luminescent materials into different parts of the photonic crystal pattern, a high‐level information encryption system was designed to be capable of carrying three distinct types of information. Thanks to this powerful and universal tool of MSAT, it is now possible to assemble different‐sized, even irregular non‐spherical units with monodispersed spherical units into large‐sized and high‐quality photonic crystal films, which provides an easy access to incorporating new features into the photonic crystal system. Abstract:Innovative multiplexing technologies based on nano-optics for anti-counterfeiting have been proposed as overt and covert technologies to secure products and make them difficult to counterfeit. However, most of these nano-optical anti-counterfeiting materials are metasurfaces and metamaterials with complex and expensive fabrication process, often resulting in materials that are not damage tolerant. Highly efficient anti-counterfeiting technologies with easy fabrication process are targeted for intuitive and effective authentication of banknotes, secure documents, and goods packing. Here, a simple strategy exploiting self-assembling and nanoimprinting technique to fabricate a composite lattice photonic crystal architecture featuring full spatial control of light, multiplexed full-pixel imaging, and multichannel cryptography combined with customized algorithms is reported. In particular, the real-time encryption/recognition of mobile quick response codes and anti-counterfeiting labels on a postage stamp, encoded by the proposed photonic architecture, are both demonstrated. The wave optics of scattering, diffraction, and polarization process involved are also described, validated with numerical simulations and experiments. By introducing a new degree of freedom in the 3D space, the multichannel image switching exhibits unprecedented variability of encryption, providing a promising roadmap to achieve larger information capacity, better security, and higher definition for the benefit of modern anti-counterfeiting security.

Abstract:Self-assembled photonic structures have greatly expanded the paradigm of optical materials due to their ease of access, the richness of results offered and the strong interaction with light. Among them, photonic heterostructure shows unprecedent advances in exploring novel optical responses that only can be realized by interfaces or multiple components. In this work, we realize visible and infrared dual-band anti-counterfeiting using metamaterial (MM) - photonic crystal (PhC) heterostructures for the first time. Sedimentation of TiO2 nanoparticles in horizontal mode and polystyrene (PS) microspheres in vertical mode self-assembles a van der Waals interface, connecting TiO2 MM to PS PhC. Difference of characteristic length scales between two components support photonic bandgap engineering in the visible band, and creates a concrete interface at mid-infrared to prevent interference. Consequently, the encoded TiO2 MM is hidden by structurally colored PS PhC and visualized either by adding refractive index matching liquid or by thermal imaging. The well-defined compatibility of optical modes and facility in interface treatments further paves the way for multifunctional photonic heterostructures.
Chiral Luminescent Liquid Crystal with Multi‐State‐Reversibility: Breakthrough in Advanced Anti‐Counterfeiting Materials

Abstract:Advanced anti‐counterfeiting material has multi‐mode information outputs including reflective color, fluorescence, and circularly polarized luminescence signal. Each mode has three states, and the three‐state information can be reversibly converted. Assisted by the left‐ and right‐handed circular polarized filters, the intensity of reflective color and fluorescence of each state can be distinguished by the naked eye. Creating a security material that carries distinct information in reflective color, fluorescence, and chiroptical property will enhance anti‐counterfeiting levels to deter counterfeits ranging from currencies to pharmaceuticals, but is proven extremely challenging. In this work, an advanced anti‐counterfeiting material, with three‐state of each mode reversibly converted into multi‐mode materials including reflective color, fluorescence, and circularly polarized luminescence signal, is constructed by loading photofluorochromic spiropyran (SP) and zinc ion (Zn2+) into the chiral liquid crystal. Under UV irradiation, the complexes of SP and Zn2+ will be transformed into merocyanine (MC) and MC‐Zn2+, while the energy transfer occurs from MC‐Zn2+ to MC. Upon heating, MC is easy to recover to SP, while the MC‐Zn2+ remains unchanged. The MC and MC‐Zn2+ can be transformed into the SP and Zn2+ under visible light irradiation. The three states of each mode can reversibly convert. Furthermore, the reflective color or fluorescence of each state shows different intensities under left‐ and right‐handed circular polarized filters, enabling easy distinguishing by naked eyes. The advanced anti‐counterfeiting method with multi‐state of each mode for multi‐mode encryption information output will provide a new concept for designing and fabricating multi‐mode anti‐counterfeiting materials, improving the security level for practical application.

Cholesteric liquid crystal doped with spiropyran and zinc ions for multi-state anti-counterfeiting

Abstract:With the development of the information age, counterfeit products are rampant. Therefore, the development and application of anti-counterfeiting and information encryption still face significant challenges. Based on the selective reflection of cholesteric liquid crystals (CLC) and the photoisomerization principles of spiropyran (SP) and Zn 2+ , SP or SP/Zn 2+ mixtures are doped into CLC to form multi-mode anti-counterfeiting inks. Under different stimuli (such as UV irradiation, removal of UV, natural light exposure, heating at 55 °C, heating at 65 °C, and DC voltage), this ink exhibits various responses. Utilizing these characteristics, we first created exquisite anti-counterfeiting patterns, which obtained five different label photos through light or temperature control. Additionally, we further used the ink to create a triple "security label", which can only be recognized as the correct QR code when both conditions are met simultaneously. It is worth mentioning that by changing the ratio of chiral agent, a range of colors can be obtained to meet more complex anti-counterfeiting requirements. Liquid crystal (LC) cells with the ink were soldered onto a designed circuit board to achieve advanced information encryption. Finally, utilizing LC microspheres, a triple "security label" was created. Therefore, this multi-mode anti-counterfeiting ink can display completely independent programmed information under six different stimulus responses, all of which are reversible. Compared to simple single-state anti-counterfeiting techniques, this advanced multimodal anti-counterfeiting technology significantly improves the security level of practical applications in the field of anti-counterfeiting.

Abstract:The development of modern anti-counterfeiting technology can effectively suppress and combat forgery and counterfeiting, which is of great significance in the fields of information security, national defense and economy. However, the realization of multi-dimensional, integrated, difficult-to-copy and easy-to-detect optical anti-counterfeiting devices remains a challenge. In this paper, a multi-dimensional and polarization-dependent anti-counterfeiting device with structure color is designed, which is composed of patterned liquid crystal polymer (LCP) nematic layer and thermotropic cholesteric liquid crystal (TLC) layer. It has the advantages of displaying and hiding polarization states, wide color tuning range, convenient operation, high integration and security. For incident light with specific polarization state, the patterned nematic phase LCP layer can carry out regionalized phase editing and polarization state modulation, while the TLC layer can selectively reflect the incident light. Therefore, a patterned structural color security label is subtly realized. The anti-counterfeiting device can realize the display, hiding, color adjustment and image/background conversion of patterns by adjusting the polarization direction of incident light. In addition, the TLC layer in the device can meet the application requirements of the anti-counterfeit device at different environmental temperatures through flexible design of the system weight ratio. Furthermore, the device can be easily heated by body temperature, realize dynamic real-time wide-spectrum color modulation and reversible pattern erasure, and further enhance its security dimension and security. The multi-polarization type anti-counterfeiting device has a total of three dimensions of anti-counterfeiting principle. The first dimension of anti-counterfeiting effect is achieved by the thermochromic liquid crystal layer. The thermochromic liquid crystal layer has no reflection color outside the operating temperature range of TLC material, and the entire device displays black background. The second and the third dimensions of anti-counterfeiting effect are related to the polarization state of the incident light and the linear polarization direction, respectively. Only when the incident light is linearly polarized light and its polarization direction makes an angle of 45° or -45° with respect to the optical axis of the liquid crystal, the device will show the designed pattern. Consequently, our proposed anti-counterfeiting device is expected to provide a new idea for the development of anti-counterfeiting field.

Invisible NIR Spectral Imaging and Laser‐Induced Thermal Imaging of Na(Nd/Y)F4@glass with Opposite Effect for Optical Security

Abstract:Dual‐mode imaging from NIR luminescence and photothermal effect in the Na(Nd/Y)F4@glass nanocomposite triggered by a commercial 808 nm laser is reported. Both spectral imaging and thermal imaging are invisible by naked eyes and are inversely sensitive to Nd3+ concentration, which enable them to find practical application in high‐level optical security. Currently, advanced optical security techniques are imminent in response to the increasingly rampant counterfeit and pirated goods on a global scale. Herein, hexagonal Na(NdxY1−x)F4 (x = 0–1) solid‐solution nanocrystals (NCs) embedded glasses are successfully fabricated via in situ glass crystallization. Benefited from the protection of inorganic glass, Na(NdxY1−x)F4 NCs exhibit superior long‐term stability and can endure high‐power 808 nm laser irradiation. Importantly, opposite variations between near‐infrared (NIR) luminescence and laser‐induced temperature can be detected for the nanocomposites, which are sensitive to Nd3+ doping concentration. As a proof‐of‐concept experiment, Nd3+ concentration dependent anti‐counterfeiting patterns with high‐concealment and high‐precision are designed and show bright emission and dimmish thermal images in Nd3+‐tenuous composites under the irradiation of 808 nm laser, while opposite displays can be achieved in Nd3+‐enriched one. This kind of information encryption triggered by a commercial single light source to achieve dual opposing displays in one material can effectively improve security in anti‐counterfeiting.

Abstract:The design and fabrication of advanced materials with multiple optical states for constructing security code are of great value in anti-counterfeiting. Herein, novel upconversion photonic crystal (UCPC) films with tunable luminescence and structural color were prepared by vertical deposition of polystyrene encapsulated NaYF4:Ln3+ (CSNPs@SiO2/PS) composite microspheres. The composite microspheres were synthesized by sequential coating technology. Firstly, NaYF4:Ln3+@NaYF4 core/shell nanoparticles (CSNPs) were synthesized and served as upconversion luminescent emission centers. Then, the CSNPs were further coated by a SiO2 shell with pendant double bond to form CSNPs@SiO2-MPS. Afterward, mono-dispersed CSNPs@SiO2/PS composite microspheres were synthesized by emulsion polymerization of styrene in the presence of CSNPs@SiO2-MPS. By tailoring the doped lanthanide ions in CSNPs and adjusting the diameter of the composite microspheres, UCPC films with diverse upconversion fluorescence and structural color can be obtained. As a proof of concept, these different kinds of UCPC films were employed as information coding units to construct dual-mode anti-counterfeiting code. Our protocol provided a new security strategy for information storage.

Abstract:The development of luminescent materials that can simultaneously realize multiple emissions can help improve the reliability of anti-counterfeiting and the security of encrypted information. Lanthanide-doped nanomaterials are very suitable for advanced anti-counterfeiting applications because of their abundant 4 f energy levels and near-infrared (NIR) laser excitability. Herein, we design lanthanide-doped core@multishell nanoparticles NaYF 4 :Yb,Er/Ho/Tm@NaYF 4 @NaYF 4 :Nd@NaYF 4 , which can realize upconversion luminescence of Er/Ho/Tm under 980 nm excitation, as well as non-overlapping NIR-II luminescence under 980 nm or 808 nm excitation. By precisely controlling the distribution of lanthanide ions in the core-shell layer, the luminescence interference of nanomaterials under different wavelength excitation can be avoided. Experiments show that multi-color security and information encryption under NIR laser excitation can be achieved using aqueous inks containing the designed multilayered core-shell nanostructures, which are covert and difficult to forge. And the multilayer core-shell nanopowder can be used for efficient identification of latent fingerprints on complex surfaces.
