Abstract:In high power laser systems, nonlinear effect, one of the key factors of beam wavefront aberration and even irreversible damage to system, has always been one of the top considerations of researchers for decades. A hybrid ray-tracing method for both linear media and nonlinear media based on geometric optics is presented in this paper and realized by programming. In a simple optic system with KDP crystal, an obvious decline of beam quality is observed in high laser power density conditions and a method taking component intervals as compensation of beam quality is proved feasible. Considering the complexity of traditional modeling method based on surfaces, a modeling method based on components is established. Hopefully, the conclusions and flaws of this paper can shed light on relevant work and further research.

Abstract:The simulation of nonlinear self-focusing phenomenon using ray-tracing method can macroscopically provide an intuitive picture of the propagation of light in a self-focusing material,without adopting paraxial approximation or self-similar hypothesis.In this paper,propagation of light is sampled by discrete slices along a certain direction.Thus nonlinear propagation is turned into the combination of optical modulation of the refractive index on separate slices and linear propagation between each two adjacent slices.On each slice,after calculating the flux,we use a novel algorithm to suppress the quantized errors.For the linear propagating process,Adams method is adopted to solve the ray equations,which solve the problem that the widely used Runge-Kutta method cannot be used in simulation of light in nonlinear materials.The simulation results reveal that there are several foci along the propagating axis and the location of the first focus becomes closer to the incident plane as the power of light goes up.Furthermore,because the program traces real rays,it is possible to reach the non-paraxial region and reveal the phenomenon of ring-structure flux distributions caused by self-focusing.This is significant for the safety of high-power laser systems.Some commercial optical design and simulation software are also based on ray-tracing methods.Thus the systems including both nonlinear and linear materials are possible to simulate,which can guide people to set up the corresponding experimental systems.

Abstract:Self-focusing is observed in nonlinear materials owing to the interaction between laser and matter when laser beam propagates. Some of numerical simulation strategies such as the beam propagation method (BPM) based on nonlinear Schrodinger equation and ray tracing method based on Fermat's principle have applied to simulate the self-focusing process. In this paper we present an iteration nonlinear ray tracing method in that the nonlinear material is also cut into massive slices just like the existing approaches, but instead of paraxial approximation and split-step Fourier transform, a large quantity of sampled real rays are traced step by step through the system with changing refractive index and laser intensity by iteration. In this process a smooth treatment is employed to generate a laser density distribution at each slice to decrease the error caused by the under-sampling. The characteristics of this method is that the nonlinear refractive indices of the points on current slice are calculated by iteration so as to solve the problem of unknown parameters in the material caused by the causal relationship between laser intensity and nonlinear refractive index. Compared with the beam propagation method, this algorithm is more suitable for engineering application with lower time complexity, and has the calculation capacity for numerical simulation of self-focusing process in the systems including both of linear and nonlinear optical media. If the sampled rays are traced with their complex amplitudes and light paths or phases, it will be possible to simulate the superposition effects of different beam. At the end of the paper, the advantages and disadvantages of this algorithm are discussed.

Abstract:The propagation of ultrashort laser Pulses in water has been investigated with the extended nonlinear Schrodinger equation and the electron density equation. With the model that incorporates the diffraction, normal group-velocity dispersion, multiphoton absorption, self-focusing and defocus of light by the generated free electrons, we examined numerically the spatio-temporal development of the on-axis light intensity along the propagation and the laser-induced electron plasma. Simulation of the underlying dynamics of the ultrashort laser propagation in water reveals that the self-focusing interplays competitively with the laser-induced optical breakdown. Moreover, the laser energy, its duration and focusing geometry determine in combination the structure of plasma filament and the reshaping of energy fluence. The results may provide a better understanding, and application of the ultrashort laser pulses ill medicine.

Abstract:Multimode fiber systems are desirable for industrial and scientific applications. As an interesting effect for the laser beam propagation in a multimode fiber, nonlinear Kerr beam cleanup has attracted considerable research interest due to the spatial beam compressing. However, its physical mechanisms, especially the influences of input conditions on its performances, remain unclear. Here, we report a new self-organized regime for the multimode beam propagation in a graded-index multimode fiber: when the input laser has a dominant mode in which most of the laser energy is concentrated, the beam profile can be maintaining in a well-defined structure similar to the input dominant mode in nonlinear regime, while it will evolve to an irregular pattern in linear regime. The existence and universality of this nonlinear beam self-maintaining effect have been verified by the experimental and numerical data. Our results also provide evidence that nonlinear Kerr effects can be the driving mechanism and nonlinear Kerr beam cleanup is a specific case of this effect. Further research into this spatial beam shaping effect may provide a new perspective to understand other multimode fiber nonlinearities.

Abstract:The self-accelerating beams such as the Airy beam show great potentials in many applications including optical manipulation, imaging and communication. However, their superior features during linear propagation could be easily corrupted by optical nonlinearity or spatial incoherence individually. Here we investigate how the interaction of spatial incoherence and nonlinear propagation affect the beam quality of Airy beam, and find that the two destroying factors can in fact balance each other. Our results show that the influence of coherence and nonlinearity on the propagation of partially incoherent Airy beams (PIABs) can be formulated as two exponential functions that have factors of opposite signs. With appropriate spatial coherence length, the PIABs not only resist the corruption of beam profile caused by self-focusing nonlinearity, but also exhibits less anomalous diffraction caused by the self-defocusing nonlinearity. Our work provides deep insight into how to maintain the beam quality of self-accelerating Airy beams by exploiting the interaction between partially incoherence and optical nonlinearity. Our results may bring about new possibilities for optimizing partially incoherent structured field and developing related applications such as optical communication, incoherent imaging and optical manipulations.

Abstract:Using conventional methods, a laser pulse can be focused down to around 6-8 mu m, but further reduction of the spot size has proven to be difficult. Here it is shown by particle-in-cell simulation that with a hollow cone an intense laser pulse can be reduced to a tiny, highly localized, spot of around 1 mu m radius, accompanied by much enhanced light intensity. The pulse shaping and focusing effect is due to a nonlinear laser-plasma interaction on the inner surface of the cone. When a thin foil is attached to the tip of the cone, the cone-focused light pulse compresses and accelerates the ions in its path and can punch through the thin target, creating highly localized energetic ion bunches of high density.

Abstract:Supercontinuum generation and self-focusing effect of ultra-short pulse propagation in Kerr media were investigated according to(3+1) dimensions' nonlinear Schrdinger equation.Results indicate that spectral super-broadening without self-focus can be achieved by adjusting the pump power and the beam diameter.The process of a small diameter ultra-high power pump beam propagating in BK7 glass with or without small scale modulation was simulated.The experimental results indicate that the near-field beam quality improves when the pump power decreases.In this case,the pump beam doesn't collapse by whole beam self-focus and other nonlinear effects are restrained.In order to keep pump intensity in propagating,the best input power used for supercontinuum generation is near the whole beam self-focusing critical power.

Abstract:The low-temporal coherence light (LTCL) has gained extensive attention in the research of inertial confinement fusion due to its instantaneous broadband physical properties. Recent reports have demonstrated that the LTCL has significant suppression effects on laser plasma instability. However, the temporal spike structures of the LTCL will not only induce the amplification of the self-focusing effect, but also make its small-scale self-focusing characteristics and corresponding damage mechanism more complicated. Exploring the self-focusing characteristics of the LTCL would provide an important information for improving the output power of the LTCL. In this paper, we designed a more accurate test method for comparing the nonlinear self-focusing effect of different lasers, and compared the self-focusing effect of LTCL and single longitudinal mode (SLM) pulse. In the experiments, fused silica was tightly focused by a short focal length lens to avoid input surface damage. A spatially resolved test method was designed to measure the nonlinear I×L value (where I is the incident intensity, L is the distance from the head of filamentation damage to the input surface), which was accumulated from the input surface to the head of filamentation damage. The results show that the nonlinear I×L value obtained by the spatially resolved method was lower than that obtained by the traditional test method, since the energy loss caused by incident surface damage and backward Stimulated Brillouin Scattering (SBS) has been resolved. Furthermore, the nonlinear I×L values of the SLM pulse and the LTCL were also compared by the traditional test method and spatially resolved method. The test results show that, due to the temporal spike structure, the LTCL has a lower nonlinear I×L value than that of the SLM pulse. The SBS effect and the different damage characteristics of the input surface were also analyzed. The study provides a more accurate test method for better analysis of self-focusing effect of LTCL and laser pulses with different characteristics, and hence a reference for design of high-power device of the low-temporal coherence light.

Abstract:To improve the environmental stability and self-starting ability, researchers have developed the nonlinear optical-loop mirror and nonlinear amplifying-loop mirror (NALM) mode-locking technologies. The developing process of these technologies can be summarized as the following three phases: non-polarization-maintaining (PM) structures with polarization controllers, PM figure-of-8 cavity structures with dual-gain, and PM figure-of-9 cavity structures with a phase shifter. Among these, the newly invented figure-of-9 NALM mode-locked fiber laser is particularly advantageous owing to its easy self-starting ability, long-term stability, concise structure, and cost-effectiveness. Such a mode-locked fiber laser is increasingly employed in applications such as optical frequency combs, generation of THz radiation, and advanced material micromachining.

Abstract:It is shown that an intense laser pulse can be focused by a conical channel. This anomalous light focusing can be attributed to a hitherto ignored effect in nonlinear optics, namely that the boundary response depends on the light intensity: the inner cone surface is ionized and the laser pulse is in turn modified by the resulting boundary plasma. The interaction creates a new self-consistently evolving light-plasma boundary, which greatly reduces reflection and enhances forward propagation of the light pulse. The hollow cone can thus be used for attaining extremely high light intensities for applications in strong-held and high energy-density physics and other areas.

Abstract:We have made quantitative measurements on the characteristics of self-focusing varying from transient to quasi-steady-state. The results agree well with a simple unified physical description of self-focusing and with known theoretical predictions. Stimulated Brillouin scattering is identified as the mechanism responsible for the limiting diameter of the self-focused beam in our experiment.

Abstract:For the quasi-steady-state (QSS) self-focusing case, the imaging and focusing characteristics of partially coherent light pulses (PCLPs) propagating through a thin lens in nonlinear self-focusing media are studied. The analytical formulae of the image distance and the image size are derived. It is shown that the time delay of the minimum and maximum of the image distance depends on the light spatial coherence, while the time delay of the maximum of the image size is independent of the light spatial coherence. On the other hand, the analytical formula of the focal length of PCLPs is derived. It is found that, when the value of the pulse peak power is fixed, a PCLP has more advantages to avoid the optical damage of materials as the incident distance or the thin lens focal length increases or the initial pulse width decreases.

Abstract:One of the obstacles in obtaining high power/energy laser sources is self-focusing, which stems from the nonlinear phase shift (B-integral) accumulated during beam propagation in Kerr media. Phase-mismatched secondharmonic generation may impose a nonlinear phase shift on the fundamental with controllable sign and magnitude,which can be used to compensate for self-focusing with a single-pass configuration. We have demonstrated such a possibility for picosecond pulses theoretically and experimentally, and both configurations of pre- and postcompensation by a β-barium borate crystal have been studied in detail. Cascaded second-order nonlinearity-based compensation for self-focusing may provide an auxiliary means to the conventional B-integral control techniques.

Abstract:A new suggestion that there is a phase-jump of �� in the boundary wave was put forward which might be a supplement of Huygens-Fresnel principle. Based on this new suggestion, a series of new beam were invented, both outside and inside laser cavity. Especially, a new CO 2 laser with equivalent beam quality factor M 3 2<1 was achieved, it can be considered as the result of some controllable nonlinear self-focusing.

Abstract:The nonlinear self-focusing effect on the beam quality of powerful incoherent array beams propagating upwards in the turbulent atmosphere is investigated. A quadratic approximation of the nonlinear phase is proposed, and the analytical propagation formulae of incoherent array beams in the turbulent atmosphere are derived and confirmed. It is shown that the beam quality at the target degrades as the fill factor f c increases due to an increase of self-focusing, but it becomes better as the number N of sub-beams increases because of a decrease of self-focusing. Furthermore, the detrimental self-focusing may be even eliminated when f c is small enough or N is large enough. On the other hand, it is found that in the turbulent atmosphere, an incoherent array beam can achieve a higher threshold critical power, a higher intensity and a higher energy focusability at the target than a single laser beam.

Abstract:Propagation of a tightly focused high-power ultrashort laser pulse in an optical medium is usually substantially influenced by the medium optical nonlinearity that can noticeably affect the laser pulse parameters around the nonlinear focus and lead to unavoidable and often undesirable spatial distortions of the focal waist. We present the results of our experimental study and numerical simulations on a femtosecond Ti-Sapphire laser pulse propagation in air under different spatial focusing. We concentrated our study on spectral-angular and spatial pulse transformations under different focusing regimes, from linear to nonlinear one, when pulse filamentation occurs. For the first time to the best of our knowledge, we found the laser pulse numerical apertures range,namely, from NA=0.002 to 0.005 (for laser pulse energy of 1 mJ), where the laser pulse distortions both in frequency-angular spectrum and pulse spatial shape are minimal. By means of the numerical simulations, we found the threshold pulse energy and peak power in a wide range of focusing conditions, within which a transition between the linear and strongly nonlinear laser pulse focusing in air takes place. This energy limit is shown to decrease with pulse numerical aperture enhancement. Our findings identify the laser pulse numerical apertures and energy adequate for getting a maximum laser intensity with a good beam quality around the focal point suitable for various laser micropatterning and micromachining technologies.

Abstract:The principle of optical trapping is conventionally based on the interaction of optical fields with linear induced polarizations. However, the optical force originating from the nonlinear polarization becomes significant when nonlinear optical nanoparticles are trapped by ultrafast laser pulses. Herein we establish the time-averaged optical forces on a nonlinear optical nanoparticle using high-repetition-rate ultrafast laser pulses, based on the linear and nonlinear polarization effects. We investigate the dependence of the optical forces on the magnitudes and signs of the refractive nonlinearities. It is found that the self-focusing effect enhances the trapping ability, whereas the self-defocusing effect leads to the splitting of potential well at the focal plane and destabilizes the optical trap. Our results show good agreement with the reported experimental observations and provide a theoretical support for capturing nonlinear optical particles.

Abstract:Recently, optimization techniques have had a significant impact in a variety of fields, leading to a higher signal-to-noise and more streamlined techniques. We consider the possibility for using programmable phase-only spatial optimization of the pump beam to influence the supercontinuum generation process. Preliminary results show that significant broadening and rough control of the supercontinuum spectrum in the visible region are possible without loss of input energy. This serves as a proof-of-concept demonstration that spatial effects can controllably influence the supercontinuum spectrum, leading to possibilities for utilizing supercontinuum power more efficiently and achieving excellent spectral control.
