Abstract:Although RAID (Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disk) technology has been widely used in HDD (Hard Disk Drive) array in the past several years, optical array just begins its steps using optical drive with higher data transfer rate and faster seeking operation1. Optical drive (especially CD-ROM) have improved sustain transfer rate by several times, and some special designed optical drives can reduce seek time near to HDD. These progresses make it possible that low cost optical array become outside memory of video server in Video-on-Demand1,2,3 system instead of expensive HDD array. A new kind of RAID form can reduce distance between different data segments. So this new data strategy reduce the seeking time too, which make optical array can be accessed by more users simultaneously than before.

Abstract:It's easy to build a centralized VOD server in a LAN, which is easy to manage but is difficult to extend. But in the WAN, VOD is not yet widely implemented. The biggest obstacle is the lack of server bandwidth that can handle the large amounts of video data. A distributed VOD server is brought forward that is easy to extend so as to serve more concurrent customers and provide more programs, and the expansibility in these aspects is discussed: the architecture, communication based on CORBA, load balance and storage tech- nology. Experiments show that the VOD server is suitable for use both in LAN and WAN.

Abstract:One of the significant tasks when designing a VoD(Video-on-Demand) system is to support as many simul-taneous streams as possible. Obviously, it is closely related to the storage subsystem. In this paper, we compare theperformance of the storage subsystems based on two different designs by simulation, one data placement policy is us-ing the technique of striping, and the other is simply placing a whole video only in one server. We find that, when da-ta is CBR (Constant-Bit-Rate) coded, the numbers of simultaneous streams respectively supported by the twoschemes are equal, but the latter can present better service.

Abstract:We proposed a simple and efficient method to create a 2D perfect optical vortex (POV) array based on the Fourier shift theorem and a 2D POV array hexadecimal encoding/decoding method to realize high capacity data transmission. The encoding data sequence contains the position and topological charge information of each POV, which can be modulated by adding a phase shift factor to a specially designed hybrid phase-only grating. Based on the position and topological charge information, the 2D POV array can realize spatial division multiplexing and orbital angular momentum shift keying. The hexadecimal encoding/decoding method was investigated both theoretically and experimentally. The experimental results show that this method has potential applications in high capacity optical communications.
Disk I/O based load balancing in VOD system

Abstract:Video-on-Demand (VOD) has been gaining increasing popularity in recent years. Previous load balancing algorithms in video servers mainly focus on two resources: storage and network bandwidth. However, with better network and cheaper disk, disk I/O becomes more critical in reducing user-perceived latency. In this paper, we propose an algorithm for disk I/O balancing in centralized video servers. Analytically and by simulations we show that our algorithm decreases total disk I/O amount by 30% to 50% and provides better load balancing performance and higher cache hit ratio compared with round-robin and random selection algorithm.

Abstract:This paper proposes a new multi-level P2P architecture for video-on-demand(VOD) systems. It reserves the media data server of the client-server architecture and follows the P2P transmission and data sharing rule of the conventional P2P architecture. So the advantages of the client-server and conventional P2P architectures are combined in our new architecture. The multi-level P2P system is comprised of a wide area P2P network and multiple local area P2P networks. In such systems, media data are stored not only on data servers, but also on user nodes which can simultaneously supply data to peer nodes during receiving data and playing video. This architecture greatly enhances service capacity, efficiently reduces the burden of media data servers, reliably guarantees VOD QoS, and owns good scalability. A prototype multi-level P2P VOD system has been built and experiment results confirm the superiority of the new multi-level P2P architecture.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a network-aware multicast scheme to supply instantaneous VOD (video-on-demand) services. Being different from traditional VOD systems, this system is implemented based on peer-to-peer grid. By taking advantage of the large storage and the powerful processing capability in client-side devices, the user host serves as both a client and a non-dedicated video server. The system capability is enhanced due to the contribution of user hosts. Peer groups are formed as a collection of peers that share similar interest, and workload may be fairly apportioned among autonomous groups. In this VOD system, the adaptive video delivery mainly employs a new dynamic buffering algorithm and an improved video multicast strategy to achieve an optimal utilization of system resources, and the network-aware adaptation makes the system more robust. In cooperating with each other, the relevant servers can supply instantaneous video services for local users.

Abstract:Using P2P network to provide video on demand (VOD) service can support large-scale users so as to save the bandwidth cost of servers. As VOD must support VCR characters (drag, pause, randomly choosing watching position, etc.), building a large-scale expansion of high-performance VOD system still faces huge challenges. The paper first presents a P2P based reference model, defines the design object, and analyzes the difficulties. And then taking PPLive demand system as an example, it gives client-based solutions, including disk cache-out strategy, memory cache prefetch strategy, maintaining relations between neighbors, task scheduling, data upload strategies and so on. PPLive-demand systems are putting into practice at present with satisfactory fluency and drag delay. The largest number of simultaneous online users is over 210000, and online video data is over 700. Compared with traditional client-server model, the average bandwidth saving rate of servers is 88% or more, and the bandwidth saving rate of user-number’s the peak value can be up to 93%.

Abstract:In Video-on-Demand (VOD) system, it is very important to allocate channels efficiently, so that the most people can view the video immediately, rather than leave the system because of long waiting time. In this paper, an algorithm based on dynamic programming is proposed to maximize the expectation of served users by combining broadcasting with batching. Furthermore, a recommended system is applied in this algorithm which utilizes the remaining buffer to increase the number of served users further. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm works well.

Abstract:As Video-on-Demand(VoD) users may stop watching in the middle of a movie,so different parts of the same movie have different playback probabilities,which cause potential load unbalance problem for traditional segment based storage scheme.This paper analyzes the user's behavior pattern statistically and proposes a probability model to describe it.According to the model,it proposes an improved segment based storage scheme,and demonstrates its advantages in better load balance and system efficiency through simulation.

Abstract:In order to enhance the user experience, it is necessary to reduce the waiting time for each video. It is obvious that the waiting time decreases as the number of channels increases when other conditions keep the same. In this paper, an algorithm using binary search and combining broadcasting with unicast is proposed to minimize the maximum waiting time based on this property. Furthermore, a recommendation algorithm is applied in this algorithm which utilizes the cache of user to reduce the waiting time further. Finally, according to the distribution of arrival rates from Youku, we have established a simulation system and used the proposed algorithm on this system. The results show that the waiting time can be reduced obviously.

Abstract:Periodic broadcasting has achieved prominent performance in VoD (Video on Demand) service in wired network. However, the development of wireless VoD service still has gone on hard and slowly in comparison to the rapid growth of mobile video service. In this paper, we propose a scalable video streaming method HQOBA (Heterogeneous Quality-Oriented Bandwidth Allocation) to address the problems in wireless network. To be concrete, in order to tackle the heterogeneous client type problem, we employ variable bandwidth allocation, instead of fixed bandwidth value for each channel. Moreover, to handle the problem of scarce server bandwidth and unpredictable wireless channel conditions, the proposed method takes the advantage of FGS (Fine Granular Scalable) video coding and Periodic Broadcasting to successfully transmit video segment. Further-more, we develop a bandwidth allocation algorithm to maximize client perceptual visual quality for the proposed transmit scheme. The experimental results of HQOBA scheme also validate the effectiveness.
Manageable Peer-To-Peer Architecture For Video-On-Demand

Abstract:An efficiently manageable overlay network architecture, called AIRVoD, is proposed for video-on-demand, based on a distributed-centralized P2P network. The system consists of distributed servers, peers, SuperNodes and sub-SuperNodes. The distributed central servers act as the centralized index server to store the peer list, program list, and buffer information of peers. Each newly joined peer in AIRVoD periodically exchanges data availability information with the central server. Some powerful peers are selected to be sub-SuperNodes which store a larger part of the demanded program. The demanding peers can retrieve correspondingly unavailable data from partners selected from the central server, sub-SuperNodes and SuperNodes that have the original programs to supply the available data, by using the proposed parallel scheduling algorithm. There are four characteristics of this architecture: 1) easy to globally balance and manage: central server can identify, and cluster each newly joined peer, and allocate the load in the whole peer network; 2) efficient for dynamic networks: data transmission is dynamically determined according to data availability which can be derived from central server; 3) resilient, as the partnerships can adapt to quick switching among multi-suppliers under global balance; and 4) highly cost-effective: the powerful peers are taken full advantage to be larger suppliers. AIRVoD has been demonstrated based on CERNET OF CHINA.

Abstract:Video on-demand (VoD) service is very popular over the mobile Internet. With the demand and quality of video contents become increasingly high, the capacity demand on mobile networks is explosively increasing. In order to sustainably accommodate the future traffic growth, operators such as Verizon start to offload video traffic with broadcasting. However, how to improve VoD users' quality of experience (QoE) under wireless broadcasting is still an open issue, where the major challenge is the time-varying wireless channel capacity. In this paper, we design a wireless VoD scheme with a periodic broadcasting approach. The basic idea is to fragment a video into segments, which are then delivered over different broadcasting channels periodically. We integrate network coding into our scheme so that packet redundancy can counteract the wireless unreliability. Moreover, we reveal the fundamental limits our proposed scheme can achieve in terms of two key QoE metrics: access delay and probability of continuous playout. We then show the intrinsic connections between the two QoE metrics and the choice of design parameters. The tradeoff between QoE improvement and bandwidth overhead is also presented. We implement the scheme in a testbed and demonstrate comprehensive experiment results.

Abstract:The storage design of a peer-to-peer based video-on-demand(VoD/P2P) system is challenging due to the asynchronous user requests and the limited node resources.A storage strategy called equivalent data random access(EDRA) was developed based on the ideas of stream-oriented video segmentation,limitless redundancy codes,and random access within equivalent data.EDRA can greatly improve the video availability,load balance,resource utilization and storage scheduling in a VoD/P2P system.Simulations show that EDRA is effective for VoD/P2P storage,with about 89% higher bandwidth utilization than conventional approaches.

Abstract:To improve the transmission capacity and integration level of future optical interconnect systems, we present a communication scheme using orbital angular momentum (OAM) array encoding/decoding. By optimizing the use of space dimension (spatially orthogonal modes and spatial positions), information carried by a single symbol can be greatly improved. Experiment demonstration of 625-element and 1296-element high-base OAM array encoding/decoding by employing an array with 4 spatial locations each with 5 and 6 possible OAM beams are presented. Direct detection and simultaneous multi-OAM demodulation method are used for decoding the encoded OAM arrays. Transmission of data signal and grey-scale image signal under atmospheric turbulence are also evaluated in the experiment.

So data security increases much better than other array system. Abstract:A video distribution architecture with edge stations and Wi-Fi delivery networks as connection to residential homes is described in this paper. An edge station is configurable and controllable by a central server. It is placed in the access point of Wi-Fi networks and has multiple usages. Due to its large storage space it can be used as a mirroring/caching proxy for continuous media. Replicating popular video contents in many small mirroring sites can significantly reduce the network bandwidth requirement. When this structure is used with a cable or hybrid fiber/coax (HFC) network, it turns to be a hybrid fiber/coaxAVi-Fi (HFCW) structure, particularly suitable for video-on-demand (VoD) applications. There are many advantages of this architecture. First, the central server load and network traffic can be reduced to a small percentage. Second, the response time of most video playing requests can be significantly reduced. Third, true VoD can possibly be provided with a one-way cable system. Finally, noise from STBs (set-top boxes) is absorbed by the edge station in a two-way cable system.
