Abstract:An analytical method is presented based on H2 optimal control theory for the design of Smith predictor, which provides both good performance and robustness simultaneously. The Smith ireditor is essentially the same as Dahlin contolIer. We also show that they are equivalent to a PID controller. An example is included to illustrate the approach.

Abstract:A design method of H/sub /spl infin// robust controller based on Smith predictor is presented. By analyzing the properties of the Smith predictor, the robust performance of a time-delay system is converted into a delay-free one. This not only makes the analysis and synthesis easier, but also avoids of the rational approximation of time-delay that can result in performance deterioration. Theoretical analysis and simulation shows that the design method not only eliminates the time-delay but also improves the robust performance of the system signally. This work contributes direct application of current robust control toolbox to time-delay systems.

Abstract:While the existing literature on delay-adaptive control concentrates on uncertain plants with discrete input delays, this article proposes a predictor feedback for stabilization of uncertain linear systems with distributed input delays. A finite-dimensional linear system with distributed actuator delay may come with five types of uncertainties: unknown delay, unknown delay kernel, unknown plant parameters, unmeasurable finite-dimensional plant state, and unmeasurable infinite-dimensional actuator state. For different combinations of uncertainties, distinct control designs are developed in the article, from which the users can make selections to address a vast range of problems they face.

Abstract:Smith predictor has been proved to be a useful scheme for stable processes with time delay. In this paper an analytical design method of Smith predictor is presented for integrator/time delay processes based on the theory of complex function. The design procedure incorporates a two-stage procedure. In the first stage, the controller that stabilizes the closed loop system is parameterized. In the second stage, high enough order Pade approximation is introduced to approximate the time delay, and convert the design problem of system with time delay to that of system without time delay. The optimal Smith predictor is then derived analytically. Examples are given to illustrate the method.

Abstract:In this paper, the conventional Smith predictor is modified, which leads to significant improvements in its regulatory capacities for reference inputs and disturbances. The proposed modification utilizes the existing prediction of the conventional time delay compensator and decouples the setpoint response from the disturbance response. The setpoint response and the disturbance response of the closed-loop system are adjusted by two parameters, respectively. This allows the designer to optimize them simultaneously. Illustrative examples are provided to show the advantages of the modified scheme.

Abstract:Large delay objects are very common in industrial process control. Such control problem is significant in both theory and practice. Smith predictor is proved to be an effective way to deal with large delay objects, but it is sensitive to the model error. In this paper, the equivalent inner model control of Smith predictor was derived, and then its stability and performance problems were analyzed. Based on loop shifting theory, a new analytic method was presented to design a Smith predictor. The resulted controller can be applied to objects with a large delay, and the robust performance and stability of the closed loop can be guaranteed. The controller can be equivalently transformed into a PID type controller, and the parameters can be easily derived, so it is very convenient to industrial process control applications.

Abstract:An adaptive predictive functional control method for a class of discrete nonlinear systems is presented by changing the nonlinear model into an equivalent time varying linear model.RLS algorithm is used to identify the time-varying coefficients.The structure of this method is similar to classic PI optimal controller.Its control performance and robustness are superior to traditional predictive functional control methods which only consider output errors.Simulation results show that it is better than classic PI optimal controller.

Abstract:The Smith predictor, known as a dead time compensator, is extended to the control of a class of nonminimum phase processes called inverse response processes. An analytical design procedure is developed based on modern H∞ control theory. The resulting controller can provide not only the suboptimal frequency domain performance, but also the quantitative time domain specifications for step response. Abstract:This paper presents an adaptive nonlinear predictive control design strategy for a kind of nonlinear systems with output feedback coupling and results in the improvement of regulatory capacity for reference tracking, robustness and disturbance rejection. The nonlinear system is first transformed into an equal time-variant system by analyzing the nonlinear part. Then an extended state space predictive controller with a similar structure of a PI optimal regulator and with P-step setpoint feedforward control is designed. Because changes of the system state variables are considered in the objective function, the control performance is superior to conventional state space predictive control designs which only consider the predicted output errors. The proposed method is tested and compared with latest methods in literature. Tracking performance, robustness and disturbance rejection are improved.

Abstract:Heat transfer and fluid flow play important roles in industrial processes, especially in chemical and thermal processes. Their dynamics are often modelled as high order systems with the type of K/(Ts+1)(n), which have slow responses to the set point and the input disturbance. To enhance the tracking and disturbance rejection performance of these systems, a control structure combining the proportional-integral (PI) controller and Smith-like predictor is proposed in this paper. The tracking and disturbance rejection performance of the proposed control structure with the order mismatch are analyzed. In addition, the precondition where the proposed control structure can obtain satisfactory disturbance rejection performance is deduced. By analyzing the influence of PI parameters on control performance, an empirical tuning rule, which can balance the control performance and robustness constraint well, is summarized and the corresponding tuning toolbox is developed. Finally, the superiority of the proposed control structure is verified by simulations and comparative experiments based on Peltier temperature control platform.

Abstract:In this paper a new control scheme for uncertain time-delay systems is put forward, in which the precise model of the plant is not necessary. The time delay term is taken outside the characteristic equation of the closed-loop transfer function. Any variation of time delay does not influence the system's dynamic performance and the steady state. And the change of the process parameters does not influence the stability of the system. The parameters of the controller, adopted as PI controller, do not need adjustment frequently so that it is easy to control the system in practice. Extensive simulations show that the proposed scheme is superior to the Smith predictor in the presence of large uncertainty in process dynamics.

Abstract:A new design approach of delay-dependent robust stabilizing control for a class of uncertain time-delay systems with time-delay in both state and control variables is provided.A new linear state transformation is first proposed to separate the delay-dependent factors out.The sufficient condition of delay-dependent robust stabilizability is then derived by the Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional method.The results are given in terms of LMI.Numerical examples are presented to show that the proposed results can be less conservative and can be used to deal with small or large delay problems.

Abstract:There is an unavoidable time-delay involved when wide area signals are transmitted through a long distance.To solve this problem,based upon unified Smith predictor(USP),a novel method for the additional excitation controller designing is presented.This method eliminates the impact of time-delay by using USP at design stage.The standard H∞ mixed sensitivity approach,which is derived by solving linear matrix inequalities with additional pole-placement constraints,is employed to design the damping controller.The predictor based method proposed is applied for the damping controller design for a two-area power system.Simulation results show that controller could improve the damping ratio of inter-area mode effectively,even though the feedback signals arrive at the controller site after a finite time-delay.

Abstract:SMITH predictive control is an effective method for systems with time-delays. A proportional-integral SMITH control model with a disturbance observer was developed, and a parameters tuning formula was introduced based on ITAE (time integral and absolute error) criteria. The disturbance observer evaluates all disturbances including external disturbances and model uncertainties. Simulation results show that this new control scheme not only effectively improves the dynamic performance of reference tracking and disturbance rejection but also provides better robustness for model uncertainties.
