Abstract:The far field spectral distributions of ultrashort pulsed Gaussian beams are greatly influenced by space-time coupling. Because of the complex spectral distributions, thin dispersive medium will not only broaden the pulse temporal widths but also change the curves of the pulse fronts. The analytical results are supported by numerical calculations of certain pulsed beams and dispersive medium.

Abstract:By using the complex analytic signal representation and far-field approximation, a solution of the wave equation in free space is found, which enables us to study the spatiotemporal behavior of ultrashort pulses in the far field. The consistency of our result with the previous work is interpreted. Some interesting phenomena of ultrashort pulses propagating in free space, such as the pulse broadening, spectrum narrowing and redshifting, etc., are illustrated with nonsinusoidal Poisson-type pulses.

Abstract:By using a Fourier transform technique and applying the paraxial approximation in the frequency domain, we derive an integral solution for the transverse and longitudinal components of the light field of an ultrashort pulsed beam propagating in free space. In particular, on the basis of the theory of complex analytical signals, the solutions for the components of a pulsed Gaussian-like beam, in rectangular coordinates, are derived and compared with those derived from slowly varying envelope approximation (SVEA). The corresponding numerical investigations are carried out and show that for sub-cycle pulses, the SVEA will cause spatial singularity for both transverse and longitudinal components of the light field.

Abstract:Ultrashort laser pulse has been widely used in various applications. Its parameters, such as the pulse duration and the spectral bandwidth, should be controlled accurately in order to achieve high spatial and temporal resolution, as well as high local field intensity. In this paper, we have proposed a method to trace the propagation of ultrashort pulses through optical systems, especially the complex optics. The approach, in which both the material's dispersion and optical aberrations are taken into consideration, is developed based on the geometrical ray-tracing combined with wave theories. This method is validated by simulating the propagation of a femtosecond pulse through a specific practical imaging system. As the numerical result shows that the spatial-temporal performances of pulses are influenced greatly by optical elements, the calibration arrangement is employed to compensate for those undesired distortions. The negative dispersion of the optical grisms (the combination of gratings and prisms) is utilized in the calibration process to offset the positive dispersion introduced by lenses. The final result shows effectiveness of the correction.

Abstract:Based on the spatial- and temporal-Fourier Transform, we developed a non-paraxial correction method to the ultrashort few-cycle pulsed beam, and it was illustrated with the family of pulsed Gaussian beam. The examples shows that, because of the exist of the spatiotemporal coupling, the temporal distribution of the pulse would influence the spatial distribution of the non-paraxial correction.

Abstract:A family of solutions called iso-diffraction ultra-short pulsed Hermite Gaussian beams （UPHGB） are obtained based on the paraxial propagation equation. The propagation of UPHGB is investigated in detail. The examples shows that: the nonuniformlly distributed group velocity causes the time delay at the beam periphery, which in turn induces the deviation of the transverse distribution from the Hermite Gaussian function. In propagation, the number of pulse polarity inverions varies with the order of the UPHGB. And this phenomenon originates in the difference between the group velocity and the phase velocity in UPHGB.

Abstract:The spectrum of the ultrashort pulsed cosine-Gaussian beams is studied theoretically by use of the simulation.The results show that the pulse width and the pulse chirp affect the spectrum of the ultrashort pulsed cosine-Gaussian beams seriously.The spectrums of the ultrashort pulsed unchirped and chirped cosine-Gaussian beams are given,which draws a conclusion that the broad spectrum width is the original reason for the spatial singularity.

Abstract:A theoretical analysis of the transformation of pulsed Gaussian beams through a grating is presented under paraxial scalar approximation. By introducing the concepts of local carrier frequency and stationary phase frequency, the angular dispersive process is effectively modelled by two formulas for pulses with only single-or few-cycle duration. The expressions predict some spatiotemporal coupling phenomena, which are found to be associated with high-order angular dispersion, which distorts the electric field with varied pulse width, chirp, pulse front and energy distribution. Related results are confirmed by a rigorous numerical simulation at last. The method proposed here can be generalized to other dispersive systems with the aid of the theory of paraxial optics.

Abstract:Applying the temporal and spatial Fourier transform method, we obtain a nonparaxial pulsed beam solution, which is based on the paraxial pulsed beam solution, where the nonparaxiality is evaluated by using a series of expansions. Specifically, the general lowest-order correction field is given in an integral form. Some special examples, such as the lowest-under correction to the paraxial approximation of a fundamental Gaussian pulsed Gaussian-like beam, whose waist plane has a parallel shift from the z = 0 plane, are presented.

Abstract:Based on the radiation field emitted by a pair of oscillating electric dipoles under the complex-source-point model, an analytical formula is proposed for describing a series of time-domain Gaussian pulses propagating in free space. According to the formula, we analyze the spatiotemporal propagation of the real part of the electric field, the square of electric field envelope and the energy density. The intrinsic chirps of the pulses are calculated. The ultrashort Gaussian pulse in time-domain will become flat Gaussian, and eventually turn into a time-domain dark hollow Gaussian (TDHG) pulse as the order term of the analytic expression increases. The TDHG pulses can keep dark hollow even for a long propagating distance. Furthermore, we discuss the energy density of the TDHG pulses in the off-axis situation and find out the characteristics of the spatiotemporal coupling.

Abstract:A family of solutions of the paraxial wave equation is found in theory,which represents a new family of ultrashort pulsed beams called Hyperbolic-sine-Gaussian ultrashort pulsed beams.The Hyperbolic-sine-Gaussian ultrashort pulsed beams and their propagation properties in free space have been studied in detail.The transversal intensity distribution of Hyperbolic-sine-Gaussian ultrashort pulsed beams is a hyperbolic sine Gaussian shape in the center of the pulse,and is a Gaussian shape at the tail or head of the pulse.The pulse shape is always hyperbolic-sine-Gaussian in propagation.In propagation the polarity reversal appears on axis,and the pulse time delay appears at the beam periphery.

Abstract:A spatiotemporal non-paraxial correction to the paraxial solution of ultrashort pulsed beam is obtained by using the Fourier transform and the Taylor expansion. By studying the propagation of an isodiffracting pulsed Gaussian beam with different pulse shapes, we find that there are spectrum-induced changes in the non-paraxial propagation of the pulsed beam. We analyse the influence of pulse spectrum on the non-paraxial property of the ultrashort pulsed beam and explain it base on the paraxial approximation condition.

Abstract:The description of hollow Gaussian beam is directly started from the Maxwell’s equations. Based on the vector angular spectrum representation of Maxwell’s equations, hollow Gaussian beam is decomposed into the TE and TM terms. The analytical expressions of TE and TM terms are presented by means of mathematical techniques in the near field. By means of the method of stationary phase, the concise expressions of TE and TM terms in the far field have been also derived. The TE and TM terms are shown to be orthogonal to each other in the far field. According to the analytical representations of TE and TM terms, the light intensity distributions of the TE term, the TM term and the whole beam are depicted in the near and the far fields, respectively. The result obtained here is also compared with already known solutions. This research reveals the vectorial composition of hollow Gaussian beam, which is beneficial to enhance the applications of hollow Gaussian beam.

Abstract:From the Huygens-Fresnel principle,an integral expression with the chromatic aberration was obtained of the field amplitude of a beam with a shape of a quarter of a circle.From the integral expression amplitude expressions of the coherent addition field of four such subbeams with different phase delay were acquired and a mathematic model of the field in the far field was set up.Numerical modulation was carried out for a 1 ps ultrashort pulse with a 10 cm aperture and 200 cm focal length.The far-field intensity distributions of three cases were given including single beam,four beams without phase delay and four beams with a phase delay of π between them.The conclusion is that the far-field pattern of a beam with a shape of a quarter of a circle is no more centrosymmetric but axis symmetric and that the focal spot is divided into two halves with a phase delay of π between the four beams.So the phase delay between subbeams should be much smaller than π during the course of grating tiling.

Abstract:In this paper, a family of integral solutions representing ultrashort pulsed beam propagation in free space is studied by using the comoving frame coordinates and the Fourier transformation for time variable in terms of well-known paraxial approximation. The pulsed Gaussian-like beam solution is obtained as a special case of the integral solution, where the pulsed Gaussian beam solution is included. Further, starting from the nonparaxial pulsed beam propagation equation in the temporal-frequency domain and making use of the spatial Fourier transform, the nonparaxial pulsed beam solution is derived based on the paraxial pulsed beam solution. where the nonparaxiality is evaluated by a series of expansions.

Abstract:We find a new family of solutions of the nonparaxial wave equation that represents ultrashort pulsed light beam propagation in free space. The spatial and temporal parts of these pulsed beams are separable; the spatial transverse part is described by a Bessel function and remains unchanged during propagation, but the temporal profile can be arbitrary. Therefore the pulsed beam exhibits diffraction-free behavior with no transverse spreading, but the temporal part changes as if in a dispensive medium; the change is dominated by what we call spatially induced group-velocity dispersion. The analytical and numerical investigations show that the even- and odd-order spatially induced dispersions partially compensate for each other so as to give rise to pulse spreading, weakening, asymmetry, and center shift.
