Abstract:By introducing an imaginary space transform curvature ρ s , a complex space called Riemannian space is constructed, in which the light propagating in free space has the trajectory of straight line while propagating. Moreover, this curvature couples with that of the wave front of the paraxial beam ρ w , and therefore a complex curvature ρ c is constructed, which can be employed to investigate the behavior of the light transmission and to generalize the ABCD law.

Abstract:Based on the extended Huygens–Fresnel diffraction integral, the expressions for the average intensity and the effective size of Laguerre–Gaussian and Bessel–Gaussian Schell-model beams propagating through a paraxial ABCD optical system are obtained in the turbulent atmosphere. The influences of the source coherence and atmospheric turbulence on the propagation of Laguerre–Gaussian and Bessel–Gaussian Schell-model beams in the turbulent atmosphere are investigated in detail. It is found that the beam profile will eventually evolve into a Gaussian-like distribution through turbulence in contrast to ring-shaped far-field pattern in free space. The effective size of Laguerre–Gaussian and Bessel–Gaussian Schell-model beams with lower source coherence is less affected by turbulence. The parameter β and index n of the sources have some effects on intensity distribution and beam spreading through atmospheric turbulence.

Two new definitions of the beam quality were introduced, and the relations of these two definitions with the M 2 factor were discussed.

Abstract:Starting from flattened Gaussian beams, we deduce analytical expressions for the propagation of paraxial circular symmetric beams through a general first-order optical system. It is shown that the propagation of any scalar beam in a paraxial domain takes the same form as that in free space. Three parameters were introduced to characterize the evolution of the propagating beam. Numerical examples are also presented to illustrate the effectiveness of this method. Abstract:The statistical behavior of arbitrary paraxial light beams propagating in free space is investigated by using the Hermite-Gaussian expansion method and Fock’s representation. A series of equivalent Gaussian parameters for paraxial beam and the statistical equations for these parameters are presented. The optical transmission problem in quasi-far field region is studied. Abstract:Based on the generalized Raleigh-Sommerfeld diffraction integral formula, an analytical nonparaxial propagation expression of a partially coherent anomalous hollow beam (AHB) in free space is derived. The far field and the paraxial result are also presented as special cases, respectively. By using the derived formula, the nonparaxial propagation properties of a partially coherent AHB are studied numerically and are compared with the paraxial results. It is found that the nonparaxiality properties of a partially coherent AHB are closely related to its beam waist, coherent length and the propagation distance.

Abstract:We construct solutions of the paraxial and Helmholtz equations that are polynomials in their spatial variables. These are derived explicitly by using the angular spectrum method and generating functions. Paraxial polynomials have the form of homogeneous Hermite and Laguerre polynomials in Cartesian and cylindrical coordinates, respectively, analogous to heat polynomials for the diffusion equation. Nonparaxial polynomials are found by substituting monomials in the propagation variable z with reverse Bessel polynomials. These explicit analytic forms give insight into the mathematical structure of paraxially and nonparaxially propagating beams, especially in regard to the divergence of nonparaxial analogs to familiar paraxial beams. Abstract:Based on the vectorial Rayleigh-Sommerfeld diffraction integral formulae, analytical expressions for a vectorial elliptical Gaussian beam’s nonparaxial propagating in free space are derived and used to investigate target beam’s propagation properties. As a special case of nonparaxial propagation, the target beam’s paraxial propagation has also been examined. The relationship of vectorial elliptical Gaussian beam’s intensity distribution and nonparaxial effect with elliptic coefficientαand waist width related parameterfωhas been analyzed. Results show that no matter what value of elliptic coefficientαis, when parameterfωis large, nonparaxial conclusions of elliptical Gaussian beam should be adopted; while parameterfωis small, the paraxial approximation of elliptical Gaussian beam is effective. In addition, the peak intensity value of elliptical Gaussian beam decreases with increasing the propagation distance whether parameterfωis large or small, and the larger the elliptic coefficientαis, the faster the peak intensity value decreases. These characteristics of vectorial elliptical Gaussian beam might find applications in modern optics.

Abstract:The offset between the light beam focal plane and the geometrical optical focal plane was defined as the focal shift of converging spherical waves, and the analytical expression of the focal shifts was derived by using Fourier transforms and reverse Fourier transforms. Based on the theory of hydrodynamics model of optics (HMO), it is pointed out that the focal shifts are attributed to the intrinsic movements of the light beams, meanwhile, as the expression of the focal shifts is obtained under the approximation of paraxial condition, it is suitable only for paraxial light beam.

Abstract:By using operator techniques, we solve the paraxial wave equation for a field given by the multiplication of a Gaussian function and an entire function. The latter possesses a unique property, being an eigenfunction of the {\it perpendicular} Laplacian with a zero eigenvalue, a consequence of the Cauchy-Riemann equations. We demonstrate, both theoretically and experimentally, the inherent rotation of this field during its propagation. The explanation for these rotations lies in the utilization of the quantum (Bohm) potential. The simplicity of this outcome reveals promising prospects: it enables the analytical deduction of the Fraunhofer or Fresnel diffraction pattern. In essence, this means that obtaining the Fresnel or Fourier transform of a function satisfying the Cauchy-Riemann equations becomes a straightforward task.

Gouy and Spatial-Curvature-induced Phase Shifts of Light in Two-Dimensional Curved Space

Abstract:Gouy phase is the axial phase anomaly of converging light waves discovered over one century ago, and is so far widely studied in various systems. In this work, we have theoretically calculated Gouy phase of light beams in both paraxial and nonparaxial regime on two-dimensional curved surface by generalizing angular spectrum method. We find that curvature of surface will also introduce an extra phase shift, which is named as spatial curvature-induced (SCI) phase. The behaviors of both phase shifts are illustrated on two typical surfaces of revolution, circular truncated cone and spherical surface. Gouy phase evolves slower on surface with greater spatial curvature on circular truncated cone, which is however opposite on spherical surface, while SCI phase evolves faster with curvature on both surfaces. On circular truncated cone, both phase shifts approach to a limit value along propagation, which does not happen on spherical surface due to the existence of singularity on the pole. An interpretation is presented to explain this peculiar phenomenon. Finally we also provide the analytical expression of paraxial Gaussian beam on general SORs. By comparing the result with the exact method we find the analytical expression is valid under the approximation that beam waist and scale of surface are beyond order of wavelength. We expect this work will enhance the comprehension about the behavior of electromagnetic wave in curved space, and further contribute to the study of general relativity phenomena in laboratory.

Abstract:We investigate, theoretically and experimentally, the evolution of a paraxial beam propagating in free space when its initial transverse structure is characterized by an asymmetric Gaussian modulation combined with an entire function. Utilizing a quantum optics operator approach, our study specifically examines the effects of parameter variations within the Gaussian modulation on two entire functions: the Bessel function and the Airy function. Through this investigation, we aim to elucidate how these parameter variations influence the beam's propagation dynamics and the role played by the asymmetry of the Gaussian modulation in the propagation of such paraxial beams. Additionally, we provide a comprehensive method for computing the propagated field under these conditions.

Abstract:By introducing a hard aperture function into a finite sum of complex Gaussian functions, an approximate analytical expression for the two-dimensional off-axial Hermite-cosh-Gaussian beams passing through a rectangular apertured and misaligned paraxially ABCD optical system has been derived. The results provide more convenience for studying their propagation and transformation than the usual way by using diffraction integral directly. Some numerical simulations are also illustrated for the propagation characteristics of a two-dimensional off-axial Hermite-cosh-Gaussian beam through a rectangular apertured ABCD optical system.

Abstract:As an analog model of general relativity, optics on some two-dimensional (2D) curved surfaces has been increasingly paid attention to in the past decade. Here, in light of Huygens-Fresnel principle, we propose a theoretical frame to study light propagation along arbitrary geodesics on any 2D curved surfaces. This theory not only enables us to solve the enigma of "infinite intensity" existed previously at artificial singularities on surfaces of revolution, but also makes it possible to study light propagation on arbitrary 2D curved surfaces. Based on this theory, we investigate the effects of light propagation on a typical surface of revolution, Flamm's paraboloid, as an example, from which one can understand the behavior of light in the curved geometry of Schwarzschild black holes. Our theory provides a convenient and powerful tool for investigations of radiation in curved space.

Abstract:By taking the vectorial property of time average energy flow density and the accurate formula of the light intensity into account, the first and second intensity moments of the nonparaxial scalar beams were defined. Based on the static scalar wave equation, the propagation law of the second intensity moments of monochromatical scalar beams in free space are obtained and it is found that the variation of the second intensity moment on the cross section versus Z axis is a parabolic curve. A new beam quality factor for nonparaxial scalar beams was introduced. Moreover, some important aspects of the intensity moments theory were discussed.
