Abstract:This paper reports on a new hybrid TD-AIM-MOD scheme for analyzing transient scattering from the perfect electrically conducting structures. The scheme reduces the computational complexity of a classically formulated MOD solver from No2Ns2 to Nolog2NoNs1.5log2Ns - here No is the maximum order of the Laguerre polynomials used to expand the temporal current signature. Just as in MOT-TD-AIM solvers, the scatterer is embedded in a 3D regular grid and sources are projected onto this grid via moment matching. Next, fields are propagated on this grid by using a 3D spatial FFT and a blocked 1D “temporal” (order) FFT. Finally, fields at observers are obtained by interpolating their values from the regular spatial grid, followed by a near field correction operation. The accuracy and stability characteristics of the TD-AIM-MOD method are demonstrated via its application to large-scale scattering problems.

Abstract:Based on the Helmholtz's equation and energy conservation law for the travelling wave field, the actual wave function for the TE travelling wave in the inhomogeneous dielectric is recommended, the original field distribution functions of the TE mode in symmetrical planar waveguide core layer and cladding layers are suggested. Moreover, the virgin phase shift for total reflection effect at the turning point is proposed, the eigen equation of a new improved WKB method for the symmetrical planar waveguide is given. As the concept of phase delay for optical wave in the dielectric and the new improved WKB method are engaged, the multiple quantum wells planar waveguide is considered as an equivalent of the triplex layer waveguide, a new method for analyzing the symmetrical multiple quantum wells planar waveguide is put forward. Several approximate formulas for computing the effective refractive index, the normalized frequency and mode field distribution are presented. Then, found on the maximal matching efficiency method for the mode field distributions, the expression of Gaussian approximation for the mode field distribution of single mode symmetrical multiple quantum wells planar waveguide is present. As an example, the normalized field distributions of GaAs/GaAlAs symmetrical multiple quantum wells planar waveguide is referred.

Abstract:Folded waveguides are common slow wave structures in traveling-wave tubes (TWT) where energy transferred from electronic beam to microwave. Efficiency of energy transition and S-parameters of a folded waveguide affect a TWT's bandwidth, output power and gain performance, etc. In this paper, we propose a finite-element framework for electromagnetic wave simulation of TWT. Arbitrary high order mesh and basis function techniques are integrated, as well as a geometry manifold embedded information for efficient mesh refinement.

Abstract:Donnell’s thin shell theory and basic equations based on the wave propagation method discussed in detail here, is used to investigate the natural frequencies of thin finite length circular cylindrical shells under various boundary conditions. Mode shapes are drawn to explain the circumferential mode numbern and axial mode numberm, and the natural frequencies are calculated numerically and compared with those of FEM (finite element method) to confirm the reliability of the analytical solution. The effects of relevant parameters on natural frequencies are discussed thoroughly. It is shown that for long thin shells the method is simple, accurate and effective.

Abstract:In this paper we present a new technique for reducing the discretization error in the transmission line matrix (TLM) method at arbitrarily shaped interfaces between two contrasting media. TLM employs cuboid mesh elements which are not conformal with curved or slanted interfaces, resulting in stair-casing and a potentially large modeling error. This error can be reduced by an order of magnitude through modification of the constitutive parameters of cells that straddle an interface between two media. Novel expressions for this modification procedure are derived and validated in this paper.

Abstract:Transmission line matrix method,modeling structures by equivalent TLM network in discrete time and discrete space based on the equivalence of field and TLM equations,becomes an invaluable 3D time-domain numerical method for the microwave simulations.After the model,input and boundaries of the 3D TLM method are reviewed,this method is implied to simulate the antireflection characteristics of subwavelength structures.It offers the fundamental for further researches and optimizing design of antireflection subwavelength structures.

Abstract:An improved meshless method is presented, with an emphasis on the detailed description of this new computational technique and its numerical implementations, by investigating the usefulness of a commonly neglected parameter. Two approaches to enforce essential boundary conditions are also thoroughly investigated. Numerical tests on a mathematical function are carried out as a means of validating the proposed method. It is seen that the proposed method is more robust than the conventional ones. Applications in solving electromagnetic problems are also presented.

Abstract:Multichannel analysis of surface wave (MASW) method is an efficient tool to obtain near-surface S-wave velocity, and it has gained popularity in engineering practice. Up to now, most examples of using the MASW technique are focused on 2D models or data from a 1D linear receiver spread. We propose a 3D MASW scheme. A finite-difference (FD) method is used to investigate the method using linear and fan-shaped receiver spreads. Results show that the 3D topography strongly affects propagation of Rayleigh waves. The energy concentration of dispersion image is distorted and bifurcated because of the influence of free-surface topography. These effects are reduced with the 3D MASW method. Lastly we investigate the relation between the array size and the resolution of dispersion measurement.

Abstract:A new two-dimensional (2-D) finite-difference method with condensed nodes is presented for guided wave structures in frequency-domain. By solving the four transverse field component eigen equations, the dispersion characteristics and mode fields are obtained. The new method is verified by two application examples, and it can get more accurate fields at boundaries or interfaces than those by conventional Yee's cell method.

Abstract:The recently developed perfectly matched layer (PML) absorbing scheme and its improvement, the modified PML (MPML), have been shown to be very effective in absorbing numerical electromagnetic (EM) waves in the conventional finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. However, the implementation of PML in the transmission-line-matrix (TLM) method is not straightforward. An alternative and easy way is to use the recently introduced TLM-based symmetrical condensed node (SCN) FDTD method. In this paper, the implementation of the PML and MPML schemes in the TLM-based SCN FDTD method and the extension of the MPML to three dimensions are presented, The computation amount is found to increase by a maximum of 1/3, and the MPML is shown to be effective and efficient in absorbing both the evanescent and propagating modes.

Abstract:A novel, highly accurate numerical synthetic technique for determining the complete dispersive characteristics of electromagnetic modes in a spatially periodic structure is presented. The numerical method based on the coupling of the finite difference method in time domain with the discrete fourier transform is applied to calculate the eigenfrequencies and eigenfield distribution of a resonant cavity which is an appropriately shorted periodic slow wave circuit of N periods at both ends. The analytical synthetic technique, which is based on the intrinsic characteristic of spatially periodic structure, is used to derive the complete dispersion relation using the numerically measured resonances. The method was successfully applied for the case of TMon modes in a coaxial corrugated waveguide and is applicable to slow wave structures of arbitrary geometry.

Abstract:In this paper, the dispersion characteristics of symmetrical modes in circular chirowaveguides are analyzed by a new equivalent transmission line network method. Radial transmission lines in the transverse cross section are introduced. In the transmission line network, the right-circularly polarized (RCP) wave and the left-circularly polarized (LCP) wave can propagate independently in the uniform regions and couple only at the interface. Therefore, this method brings a clear physical picture into the wave propagation phenomena. Based on the analysis, two interesting effects due to mode coupling and leakage are carefully studied.

Abstract:We have proposed a dispersive formulation of scalar-based meshless method for time-domain analysis of electromagnetic wave propagation through left-handed materials (LHMs). Moreover, we have incorporated Berenger’s perfectly matched layer (PML) absorbing boundary condition (ABC) into the dispersive formulation to truncate open-domain structures. In general, the dispersive formulations of conventional numerical methods are proper tools for analysis of left-handed (LH) media, whenever the LH media can be characterized by considering spatial or frequency dispersion effect for the constitutive parameters. In comparison to the grid-based numerical methods, it is proven that meshless methods not only are strong tools for accurate approximation of derivatives in Maxwell’s equations but also can provide more flexibility in modeling the spatial domain of problems. However, we have not seen any reports on using dispersive forms of meshless methods for simulation of wave propagation in metamaterials and applying any PML ABCs to dispersive formulation of meshless method. The proposed formulation enables us to take advantage of meshless methods in analysis of LH media with frequency-dependent parameters. For modeling the frequency behavior of the medium, we have used auxiliary differential equation (ADE) method based on the relations between electromagnetic fields intensities and current densities. Effectiveness of the proposed formulation is verified by analysis of 2-D and 3-D numerical examples; also, some basic factors which affect the accuracy, stability, and computational cost of the simulations are studied.

A Modified Nearly Analytic Discrete Method and Wavefield Simulations in Transversely Isotropic Media

Abstract:Nearly analytic discrete method (NADM) is a higher accurate method for elastic wave equation that can suppress effectively numerical dispersion caused by discretizing the wave equation. In this paper we investigate the efficient implementation of NADM and present a refinement of the original NADM. Our theoretical analyses show that the modified NADM can improve significantly over the original one in numerous perspectives including numerical errors, storage spaces, and computational costs. Three-component synthetic VSP seismograms in 3-layered transversely isotropic (TI) media generated by the modified NADM are also reported. Theoretical analyses and numerical results show that the modified NADM can reduce storage space about 53 percent and computational costs about 30 percent compared with the original NADM. Moreover the accuracy of the modified NADM in time increases from 2-order of the original NADM to 4-order. Numerical results suggest that the modified NADM is more suitable to large-scale modeling because the modified method has little numerical dispersions even when too-coarse grids are used.

Abstract:Based on impulse response of modes in a uniform waveguide, a modal absorbing boundary condition, employed in finite difference-time-domain (FDTD) method, is specially calculated and investigated. The high order interpolated method is used to significantly improve the accuracy of modal absorbing boundary condition, and computing speed is accelerated by applying point matched method to identify the amplitude of modes. The numerical simulation shows that the number of nodes of FDTD can be dramatically reduced by applying the modal absorbing boundary condition that leads to the improvement of the efficiency of FDTD method.

Abstract:This paper presents a meshless computational framework to simulate nonlinear water wave propagation behaviors of three-dimensional (3D) numerical wave tank containing submerged trapezoidal breakwaters. In the present computational framework, the localized method of fundamental solutions (LMFS) is used to spatial discretization, which is a localized meshless collocation method based on fundamental solutions and moving least square (MLS) technique, and fourth-order predictor-corrector scheme is used to temporal discretization. 3D numerical wave tanks containing single submerged trapezoidal breakwater and double submerged trapezoidal breakwaters are established by using LMFS. The LMFS results are compared with analytical results and experimental data through benchmarks. The effects of variations in incident wave parameters and shape parameters of the submerged trapezoidal breakwater on wave propagation are further analyzed. Additionally, the influence of double submerged trapezoidal breakwaters on the nonlinear water wave propagation behavior is investigated in comparison with the single submerged trapezoidal breakwater. Moreover, the effect of breakwater orientation on wave propagation is presented.

Abstract:A 2.5D multifrequency large signal beam-wave reaction code of TWT based on the field theory is developed for crossmodulation and intermodulation products, in which space charge fields are obtained through solving discrete Helmholtz equations with the help of Particle-in-cell method. Two-tone experiment and simulation of L band space helix-TWT shown that a good agreement in CM and IM products.
