Abstract:Based on the principle that different forms of sulfur have different chemical stability, temperature - programmed reduction (TPR), with the aid of sulfur - containing model compounds, was used to study the relationship between hydrogen sulfide evolution rate and temperature for six coal samples. The results indicate that the characteristic temperature, namely the temperature when the hydrogen sulfide evolution reaches the maximum value, is distinctively different for different sulfur forms. For example, the characteristic temperature for pyrite is 550C, for cystine 230C, for sulfurized gum 425C, and for polyphenlysulfide 615C. Shapes of hydrogen sulfide evolution curve are also different for different forms of sulfur in different coals. But the positions of the different peaks have similar nature. TPR is greatly significant in determining sulfur forms in coals qualitatively and quantitatively.
