Abstract:When an IEEE 802.15.4 network has many nodes and is almost saturated, the probability of collision is large, and the throughput is small. The main reasons are the adoption of slotted CSMA/CA and the mechanism that if a data transmission cannot be completed before the end of contention access period (CAP), it has to wait until the start of the CAP in the next superframe. This paper proposes an enhanced collision-avoidance MAC protocol for IEEE 802.15.4, and establishes a simulation model to analyze and compare the enhanced collision-avoidance MAC and the IEEE 802.15.4 MAC. The proposed protocol, compatible with the IEEE 802.15.4 protocol, has less probability of collision (almost 0), higher probability of successful transmission (close to 1), and larger network throughput (more than two times of that of IEEE 802.15.4).

Abstract:Packet corruption caused by collision is a critical problem that hurts the performance of wireless networks. Conventional medium access control (MAC) protocols resort to collision avoidance to maintain acceptable efficiency of channel utilization. According to our investigation and observation, however, collision avoidance comes at the cost of miscellaneous overhead, which oppositely hurts channel utilization, not to mention the poor resiliency and performance of those protocols in face of dense networks or intensive traffic. Discovering the ability to tolerate collisions at the physical layer implementations of wireless networks, we in this paper propose Coco, a protocol that advocates simultaneous accesses from multiple senders to a shared channel, i.e., optimistically allowing collisions instead of simply avoiding them. With a simple but effective design, Coco addresses the key challenges in achieving collision tolerance, such as precise sender alignment and the control of transmission concurrency. We implement Coco in 802.15.4 networks and evaluate its performance through extensive experiments with 21 TelosB nodes. The results demonstrate that Coco is light-weight and enhances channel utilization by at least 20 percent in general cases, compared with state-of-the-arts protocols.

Abstract:The release of IEEE 802.15.4 medium access control (MAC) and physical layer specifications represents a significant milestone in promoting deployment of wireless sensor networks . This paper first analyzes the performance of the contention access period (CAP) specified in the IEEE 802.15.4 standard by integrating the discrete-time Markov chain models of the node states and the channel states. Then a modified CAP is analyzed, which could significantly improve the performance of the system. Based on the theoretical analysis of the CAP and the effect of the modification, we have that in the saturated network of IEEE 802.15.4, the collision probability is large, and the throughput is small. The main reasons are the employment of slotted carrier sense multiple access-collision avoidance and the mechanism that if a frame transmission cannot be completed before the end of the CAP, it has to wait until the start of the next CAP. Thus an enhanced collision-avoidance MAC protocol, which achieves a better performance and is compatible with the IEEE 802.15.4 standard, is proposed to improve the performance of the system. Extensive simulations validate our conclusions.

Abstract:The paper analyses the mathematical model of the probability of collisions occurred in the transmission of RFID and finds out that the probability would drop down greatly only if rightly adjusting the reading time of the transponder. And then Dynamic ALOHA, a simple solution for anti-collision of RFID, is presented in this paper. This solution can be applied to the applications of low real-time requirement.

Abstract:Random multiple access is a candidate for nextgeneration multiple access because of its flexibility and simplicity. In this paper, we propose a novel random access scheme, each user holds a signature code as its ID decides whether to transmit or retransmit their packet based on its state and network status, while the receiver chooses to receive and provide feedback to the corresponding user based on the user's state. We model the system as a Markov chain using a stochastic game, analyze its steady-state distribution, and theoretically analyze the performance of the network. In addition, we analyzed the optimal signature code capability. The simulation results match well with the theoretical analysis, and the proposed protocol significantly outperforms the existing protocols.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel slotted ALOHA receiver, named coded ALOHA, is proposed, in which the multi-user detection is utilized under the condition of no spreading spectrum and interleavers are introduced as user's unique feature to separate the users. In the meantime, the utilization, the ratio of throughput and bandwidth expansion, and delay are used to evaluate the system performance. A comparison among CSMA, CDMA ALOHA with MD and the novel receiver is made and detailed theoretical analysis and computer simulation for these three kinds of receivers show that the novel receiver significantly improves the performance in term of delay and throughput. The utilization for coded ALOHA can reach 1.3 when SNR is 7.0 dB, highly greater than standard slotted ALOHA, 0.368, and CSMA, about 0.86.

Abstract:Simultaneous random access of massive machine type communications (MTC) devices are expected to cause congestion in the radio access network. Not only the performance of MTC, but the coexisting human to human (H2H) communications would also degrade dramatically without an appropriate medium access control (MAC) protocol. However, most existing solutions focus on the random access procedure without dealing with the sunsequent data transmission procedure. In this paper, we firstly derive a packet size threshold based on the capacity analysis of slotted ALOHA (S-ALOHA) and time division multiple access (TDMA) protocols. Then a novel hybrid S-ALOHA/TDMA MAC protocol (HSTMAC) is presented for massive MTC access, in which the resources are separated for beta distributed machine to machine (M2M) traffic with small size packets and high priority H2H traffic with large size packets. Considering access class barring (ACB) scheme as an overload control method, the system equilibrium under arbitrary retransmission limit is analyzed rigorously, which can provide insights on quality of service (QoS) guarantee. Finally, a dynamic pre-backoff (DPBO) algorithm is designed for load balance by adaptively scattering the highly synchronized M2M traffic over the transmission interval. Numerical and simulation results validate our analysis and show that the HSTMAC protocol is superior to pure S-ALOHA protocol and pure TDMA protocol. The proposed DPBO algorithm can achieve a higher success probability and resource utilization ratio with a much reduced average delay than that of uniform pre-backoff (UPBO) scheme.
Enhanced Slotted Aloha Protocols for Underwater Sensor Networks with Large Propagation Delay

Abstract:Recently underwater sensor networks (UWSN) attracted large research interests. Medium access control (MAC) is one of the major challenges faced by UWSN due to the large propagation delay and narrow channel bandwidth of acoustic communications used for UWSN. Widely used slotted aloha (S-Aloha) protocol suffers large performance loss in UWSNs, which can only achieve performance close to pure aloha (PAloha). In this paper we theoretically model the performances of S-Aloha and P-Aloha protocols and analyze the adverse impact of propagation delay. According to the observation on the performances of S-Aloha protocol we propose two enhanced S-Aloha protocols in order to minimize the adverse impact of propagation delay on S-Aloha protocol. The first enhancement is a synchronized arrival S-Aloha (SA-Aloha) protocol, in which frames are transmitted at carefully calculated time to align the frame arrival time with the start of time slots. Propagation delay is taken into consideration in the calculation of transmit time. As estimation error on propagation delay may exist and can affect network performance, an improved SA-Aloha (denoted by ISAAloha) is proposed, which adjusts the slot size according to the range of delay estimation errors. Simulation results show that both SA-Aloha and ISA-Aloha perform remarkably better than S-Aloha and P-Aloha for UWSN, and ISA-Aloha is more robust even when the propagation delay estimation error is large.

Abstract:The efficiency of slotted-ALOHA scheme is upper limited by 37%. However, it is very easy to implement. To increase system efficiency, code division multiple accessing (CDMA) technique can be adopted in ALOHA scheme. This paper studies a medium access scheme, utilizing two dimensional reservations: time dimension and code dimension. The reservation rate and collision rate are analyzed theoretically. Simulation results are given under ideal channel condition and noisy single-path Rayleigh channel condition. Theoretical analysis and simulation results demonstrate that the reservation rate is increased and collision rate is reduced due to the anti-collision advantage of CDMA code.
ALOHA Receivers: a Network Calculus Approach for Analyzing Coded Multiple Access with SIC

Abstract:Motivated by the need to hide the complexity of the physical layer from performance analysis in a layer 2 protocol, a class of abstract receivers, called Poisson receivers, was recently proposed in [1] as a probabilistic framework for providing differentiated services in uplink transmissions in 5G networks. In this paper, we further propose a deterministic framework of ALOHA receivers that can be incorporated into the probabilistic framework of Poisson receivers for analyzing coded multiple access with successive interference cancellation. An ALOHA receiver is characterized by a success function of the number of packets that can be successfully received. Inspired by the theory of network calculus, we derive various algebraic properties for several operations on success functions and use them to prove various closure properties of ALOHA receivers, including (i) ALOHA receivers in tandem, (ii) cooperative ALOHA receivers, (iii) ALOHA receivers with traffic multiplexing, and (iv) ALOHA receivers with packet coding. By conducting extensive simulations, we show that our theoretical results match extremely well with the simulation results.

An Efficient Contention-Based Initial Access Optimization for Wireless Network Protocol

Abstract:With the rapid development of WLAN, a surge in the number of network users and high-speed data exchange highlight the importance of efficient initial access of MAC layer. The majority of initial access of MAC layer is based on ALOHA or CSMA/CA. With the increase of network traffic, the number of collisions is growing rapidly, resulting in speedy decreasing access success rate and normalized throughput. This paper proposes an optimized initial access of MAC layer based on CSMA/CA, optimizing the backoff time calculation algorithm and the partition of Contention Window. A novel parameter named Collision Probability Factor is introduced to calculate the backoff time auxiliary based on channel status. Moreover, we propose a novel initial access procedure to ensure the timely transmission of high priority data. Simulation results show the effectiveness of proposed optimized approach. The stable value of normalized throughput increases from 0.25 to 0.39. And the success rate increases from 12.9% to 30.0% under heavy traffic, while collision probability reduces by 41.9%.

Abstract:Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is gaining popularity in 5G communication technologies, which meets the requirements of the massive connectivity and the high data rate. Specifically, code domain NOMA (CD-NOMA) allows multiple users to share the same time-frequency resources with different patterns or codebooks for transmission. However, the conventional CD-NOMA needs to allocate a specific code pattern for each user before it can access the channel. In this paper, we propose a novel random access protocol based on CD-NOMA in which no patterns will be pre-allocated and all the users make fair contention to all the sparse patterns, as does in CSMA/CA (Carrier Sensing Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance), a well-known random access scheme used in WLANs. In the so-called NOMA/CA protocol, multiple users access the channel non-orthogonally with different patterns by code domain multiplexing, and avoid further collisions based on proper pattern detection and backoff procedures. The simulation results show that the uplink saturated throughput can be greatly improved and more channel connections can be supported as in conventional NOMA.
Spread ALOHA Based Random Access Scheme for Macro Cell CDMA Systems

Abstract:The Slotted ALOHA based random access faces the low throughput and long access delay problems when used in macro cell CDMA systems. This paper proposes the Spread ALOHA based random access scheme as a solution. In our physical layer model, we studied the impact of multi-path on conflict interval and the Multiple Access Interference (MAI) from both the traffic channels and the request channel. Based on this model, the close-form theoretical results of throughput and average access delay are derived. Numerical results show that the proposed scheme has much better access performance, which is much higher throughput and much shorter access delay than the Slotted ALOHA based scheme. The improvement is enhanced as the load gets heavier.

Abstract:Recently, the random access (RA) protocols are widely used in modern wireless communication systems. However, message collisions in RA usually cause low channel efficiency and high time delay. In this paper, a novel RA scheme named multi-power contention resolution diversity slotted aloha (MP-CRDSA) is proposed. In MP-CRDSA, the RA packets are transmitted in random power levels and multiple slots. In the receiver, the collisions are solved by iterative successive interference cancellation (SIC). Theoretical analysis and numerical results show that the proposed RA scheme performs high throughput, low packet loss ratio and low time delay, outperforming the ordinary RA scheme.

Abstract:This paper provides a queueing analysis for the slotted Aloha network. We assume the use of an exponential backoff protocol. Most prior work on slotted Aloha focuses on the analysis of its saturation throughput. Good saturation throughput, however, does not automatically translate to good delay performance for the end users. For example, it is well-known that the maximum possible throughput of slotted Aloha with a large number of nodes is e-1 =0.3679 . Prior work showed that binary backoff factor of r = 2 can achieve a saturation throughput of 0.3466, which is very close to the e-1. However, this paper shows that if mean queuing delay is to be bounded, then the offered load must be below 0.2158, a drastic 41% drop from e-1. Fortunately, setting r= 1.3757 allows us to achieve bounded-mean-delay throughput of 0.3545, less than 4% lower than e-1. A general conclusion is that the backoff factor r may significantly affect the queuing delay performance. Our analysis provides a framework to set system parameters properly.

Abstract:IEEE 802.11ah is a protocol that adopts the CSMA/CA-based channel access way for Internet of Thing (IOT). This work proposed a newly devised Restricted Access Window (RAW) called the Claiming RAW to let those spontaneous stations having high priority's uplinked data frames do claims of intending to uplink high priority's data to reduce collisions. In addition, instead of generating the random backoff time after the collision happens, which the regular CSMA/CA-based 802.11* protocols adopt, this work adopted the registered backoff time mechanism, for which a station registers its next backoff time to IEEE 802.11ah AP when its current channel access is finished, i.e., a station generates the backoff time before the collision happens. Thus, IEEE 802.11ah AP is able to schedule stations' channel accesses based on stations' registered backoff time to avoid collisions more effectively. Through the use of the Claiming RAW and the registered backoff time mechanisms, IEEE 802.11ah AP can know which stations have high priority's uplinked data frames and then schedule these stations to have the higher privilege to access the channel. The simulation results shown that. Comparing with the traditional IEEE 802.11ah, the simulation results shown that the proposed Claim-based Priority-Discriminated Channel Access (CPDCA)method has a lower collision rate and higher throughput in the network environment having the higher number of stations in each time slot; the transmission time of those stations with high priority's uplinked data frames using the CPDCA mechanism is much lower than that of using the traditional IEEE 802.11ah.

Abstract:In RFID systems,one of the problems is the collision between tags,a major issue affecting system performance.This paper detailsthe analysis of several commonly used anti-collision algorithms,i.e.ALOHA algorithm,framed slotted ALOHA algorithm,and dynamic framed slotted ALOHA algorithm.Based on the analysis,the paper proposes a new ALOHA algorithm.The simulation and analysis have shown that with the proposed algorithm the maximum system throughput can reach up to 53% and the efficiency of RFID systems is improved.

Abstract:In this paper, we develop medium access control (MAC) schemes for both contention and contention-free accesses over wireless local area networks and give performance analysis of these MAC protocols. User detection and multirate adaptation (MRA) modules are proposed in the physical layer (PHY) to assist link differentiation. With these two modules, for contention accesses, a new distributed queuing MAC protocol (PALD-DQMP) is proposed. Based on different users’ channel states, PALD-DQMP makes use of a distributed queuing system to schedule transmissions. To support multimedia transmissions, an enhanced PALD-DQMP (E-PALD-DQMP) is designed by providing two-level optimized transmission scheduling for four access categories, thus eliminating both external and internal collisions among mobile stations. For contention-free accesses, based on the same PHY-assisted link differentiation provided by the two modules, a new multipolling MAC protocol (PALD-MPMP) is proposed, which not only reduces the polling overhead but also prioritizes transmissions according to their delay requirements. Performance analysis and simulation results show that our proposed protocols outperform the standard MAC protocols for both delay-sensitive and best-effort traffics. All these improvements are mainly attributed to the awareness of cross-layer channel state information and the consequent MRA scheme.
