Abstract:Reactive-power optimization is a hard problem in power system operation.GA has good characteristics in linear complexity and global optimization,which is suitable for Reactive-power optimization.This paper discusses GA firstly;makes deep consideration in cross over operator.Then the paper presents a heuristic cross over operator to overcome the 'premature problem' which often happens in traditional GA.To accelerate GA used in Reactive-power optimization,we used dynamic error control strategy in power flow computation.Test case of IEEE 30 node systems shows that the operator has special ability in global optimization.The computation time of improved GA algorithm is about two times faster than the traditional one.
A Hybrid Reactive Power Optimization Algorithm Based on Improved Genetic Algorithm and Primal-dual Interior Point Algorithm

Abstract:Based on improved genetic algorithm (IGA) and primal-dual interior point (PDIP) algorithm,a hybrid reactive power optimization algorithm is proposed. In this algorithm,at first the reactive power optimization problem is converted to integer nonlinear programming problem with discrete control variables which are solved by IGA; then by use of PDIP algorithm,the continuous variables which can match with the obtained most are solved,and the reactive power optimization is changed into a nonlinear programming problem with continuous control variables. In IGA,using crossover operator and mutation operator and based on the rule of feasible region the discrete constraints are processed,thus the global optimization efficiency of the hybrid optimization algorithm is raised. Numerical simulation results on the IEEE 118 test system show that the proposed method is effective. The proposed method has been applied in AGC system of Fujian power grid.

Abstract:In this paper, the authors first analyze the drawback of genetic algorithm with traditional mutation operator in preventing GA from converging prematurely, then study its influence on the diversity of genes in the same locus, and point out that the traditional mutation, to some extent, can result in premature convergence of genes in the same locus. This will cause the loss of critical alleles. Inspired by digital technique, we import two kinds of Boolean operation into GA to develop a novel mutation operator and discuss its contribution to prevent the loss of critical alleles. The experimental results of function optimization show that the improved mutation operator can prevent premature convergence effectively, and can provide a wide range of selecting control parameters for GA. Then we present a new parameter estimation algorithm based on the improved GA. Simulation experiments have been carried out and their results show that this estimation algorithm has good tracking ability and is not sensitive to the noise.

Abstract:The paper proposes a new methodology for assessing the effectiveness of GA parameters in consistently finding similar low cost solutions over a broad range of different starting random number seeds. The method involves testing the parameters of probabilities of crossover (for various crossover types) and probabilities of bitwise mutation with 1000 different random number seeds. In addition, this methodology allows different varieties of GA to be compared so that the methodology with the best performance can be determined. The proposed methodology has been verified for its effectiveness on the previously published benchmark network New York Tunnels Problem.

Abstract:There exixt the disadvantages such as prematurity in particle swarm optimization because of the decrease of swarm diversity. An immune clone particle swarm optimization algorithm was proposed based on the immune clone selection theory. Clone copy operator,immune gene operator and clone selection operator were performed during the evolutionary. According to particle's affi nity,proportion clone copy can protect eximious individuals and speed up convergence;immune gene operation maintains diversity of swarm;clone selection,which selects best individuals,can avoid the algorithm degenerating effectively. The algorithm was used in the reactive power optimization in power system,the simulation on IEEE 30-bus system shows that the average transmission loss is lower,with better optimization performance and smaller area of optimized transmission loss values.

Abstract:The traditional way to determine constrained optimize problem is Lagrange multiplier method. The demands of derivative and multiplication of peaks becomes troubles to this method. A new way -to determine such problems is supplied by the parallel search technique of genetic algorithm (GA). To improve the efficiency of the search, some scholars give out a method of two level search in which they determined the Lagrange multiplier X and parameters separately. A new GA method of multiple parameters is presented to improve the two level optimize GA. When the parameters which was optimized in two levels are coded at the same time, the two level optimization is converted to one level. Though this algorithm will not decrease operation time needed in our program, it can predigest the process of program designing and make it universal.

Abstract:For effects of the parameters of fuzzy controller with nonlinear scaling factors on a system's performance and the parameters are interactive, this paper proposes a method based on genetic algorithm (GA) to tune and optimize the parameters. Simulation results show that system which adopted the parameters derived from the method has better dynamics and static property. When the parameters or structure of plant is changed, a fuzzy controller with nonlinear scaling factors can maintain good performance indicators through re-tuning parameters and has stronger robustness.

Abstract:Evolutionary algorithms (EAs) are based on the underlying genetic process in biological organisms and on the natural evolution populations. Recently, EAs have found many potential applications in economical operation and control of power systems. However, when applying EAs to large scale system optimization problems, there is still a preeminent problem, the premature convergence problem, which degrade the EAs' performance. This paper presents an overview of the recent important techniques emerging in EAs' community with potential applications in power systems domains. These techniques covers both practical and theoretical considerations in self-adaptation and handling constraints. It is desired that they are helpful to the construction of some more efficient, robust EAs to solve a broader range of problems types in power systems.

Abstract:This paper presents a distributed genetic algorithm (GA) to solve optimal reactive power flow (OPF) problems in power systems. A master-slave plan is adopted to process the parallel computation with several computers in a local area network (LAN). In this plan, a "master" controls genetic operations and balances the loads of "slaves" which solve the adaptability function simultaneously. Some aspects to improve the parallelism of this algorithm are discussed in detail, such as encoding methods, the solution of the adaptability function of multi-objectives, and genetic operations. Moreover, some problems on parallel efficiency are analyzed. Based on the analysis of the numerical example, it can be concluded that this method achieves satisfactory optimization results as well as high computation speed.

Abstract:The optimization quality and efficiency of genetic algorithm highly depend on its parameters and operators, such as population size, crossover and mutation probabilities, selection, crossover and mutation operators. However, it often needs trial and error to determine suitable parameters and operators, so it is still an important open problem on GA research. Based on ordinal optimization and optimal computing budget allocation, the considered issue was regards as a stochastic optimization problem and a systematical method to determine optimal parameters and operators for GA with limited computation effort was proposed. Simulation results show that the proposed approach is able to reasonably determine optimal parameters and operators and provide suitable evaluation for GA simultaneously.

Abstract:In this work, we set up public transit planning model by analysising of vehicle dispatching and taking both interest of bus company and passenger into consideration.using the improved genetic simulated annealing algorithm(the improved GA-SA) to carry out optimization for public transit dispatching model,and overcomes the problems such as evolution is slow,precocious,local optimal solution and so on,it can find the approximate optimum solution, reliably Jrom the huge search space of scheduling optimization problem.intelligent scheduling optimization problem in the great search space to find reliable optimal solution or approximate optimal solution.Finally,we use MATLAB to carry on simulation experiment.the results show that the improved GA-SA has higher efficiency than traditional GA. ©2010 IEEE.

Abstract:Genetic algorithm (GA) has been widely applied to many non-polynomial hard optimisation problems, such as flow shop and job shop scheduling. It is well known that the efficiency and effectiveness of GA highly depend on its control parameters, but even setting suitable parameters often suffers from tedious trial and error. Currently, setting optimal parameters is still an open problem and one of the most important and promising areas for GA. In this paper, the determination of optimal GA control parameters with limited computational effort and total simulation replication constraint, namely, population size, crossover and mutation probabilities, is firstly formulated as a stochastic optimisation problem. Ordinal optimisation and optimal computing budget allocation are then applied to select the optimal GA control parameters while providing reasonable performance evaluation for hard flow shop scheduling problems. Lastly the effectiveness of the methodology is demonstrated by simulation results based on benchmarks.

Abstract:This paper presents a practical genetic algorithm (GA)-based solution for solving the economic load dispatch problem (ELDP) and further compares the performance of the improved GA (IGA) with that of dynamic programming (DP). Specifically, their performance is comprehensively evaluated in terms of addressing the ELDP through a case study of 26 turbines in the Three Gorges Hydropower Plant with a focus on calculation accuracy, calculation time, and algorithm stability. Evaluation results show that the improved GA method can significantly reduce the ineffectiveness of the GA in current use and could avoid the running of the turbines in the cavitation/vibration zone, thereby ensuring the safety of the turbines during generating operations. Further, the analysis comparing the performance of the IGA and DP show that the IGA is superior to DP when a small number of turbines are involved. However, as the number of turbines increases, the IGA requires more calculation time than DP; moreover, its calculation accuracy and convergence rate are significantly reduced. It is difficult to guarantee the stability of IGA in high dimension space even though the population grows, on account of the exponential expansion of the calculation dimension, the algorithm's premature convergence, and the lack of a local search capability. The improvement of the GA as well as the evaluation method proposed in this paper provide a new approach for choosing and improving optimization algorithms to solve the ELDP of large-scale hydropower plants. GARA: A novel approach to Improve Genetic Algorithms' Accuracy and Efficiency by Utilizing Relationships among Genes

Abstract:Genetic algorithms have played an important role in engineering optimization. Traditional GAs treat each gene separately. However, biophysical studies of gene regulatory networks revealed direct associations between different genes. It inspires us to propose an improvement to GA in this paper, Gene Regulatory Genetic Algorithm (GRGA), which, to our best knowledge, is the first time to utilize relationships among genes for improving GA's accuracy and efficiency. We design a directed multipartite graph encapsulating the solution space, called RGGR, where each node corresponds to a gene in the solution and the edge represents the relationship between adjacent nodes. The edge's weight reflects the relationship degree and is updated based on the idea that the edges' weights in a complete chain as candidate solution with acceptable or unacceptable performance should be strengthened or reduced, respectively. The obtained RGGR is then employed to determine appropriate loci of crossover and mutation operators, thereby directing the evolutionary process toward faster and better convergence. We analyze and validate our proposed GRGA approach in a single-objective multimodal optimization problem, and further test it on three types of applications, including feature selection, text summarization, and dimensionality reduction. Results illustrate that our GARA is effective and promising.

Abstract:A new reactive power planning model is presented considering different levels of load forecasting.And the problem of premature convergence caused by simple genetic algorithm(GA) is discussed.Based on the basic idea of migration and artificial selection(GAMAS),this paper introduces an improved multiple-population genetic algorithm(MPGA),which overcomes the problem of premature convergence effectively and improves the local and global searching capability.A case study proves that MPGA is effective.

Abstract:In order to solve the reactive power and voltage control problem caused by the high proportion of new energy connected to the power grid, this paper takes the minimum voltage deviation, minimum network loss and maximum dynamic reactive power margin of the whole system as the comprehensive optimization objectives and establishes a reactive power and voltage optimization model by considering the reactive power regulation ability of SVC (Static Var Compensator) and new energy units. In view of the continuous and discrete variables in the model, the traditional continuous FPA (Flower Pollination Algorithm) is discretized to form an improved continuous-discrete hybrid FPA, and the tournament selection mechanism is adopted to speed up the convergence. Through the example analysis of the IEEE-39 bus system, the feasibility of the proposed reactive power and voltage optimal control method in the new energy grid is verified. Compared with GA (Genetic Algorithm), the results show that the improved FPA has high optimization accuracy, which is suitable for solving the reactive power and voltage optimization problem of the new energy grid.

Abstract:This paper proposes a stochastic approach for optimization of control parameters (probabilities of crossover and mutation) in genetic algorithms (GAs). The genetic search can be modelled as a controlled Markovian process, the transition of which depends on the control parameters. A stochastic optimization problem is formed for control of GA parameters, based on a given performance index of populations and analysed as a controlled Markovian process during the generic search. The optimal values of control parameters cart be found from a recursive estimation of control parameters, which is obtained by introducing a stochastic gradient of the performance index and using a stochastic approximation algorithm. The algorithm possesses the capability of finding the stochastic gradient and adapting the control parameters in the direction of descent. A non-stationary Markov model is developed to investigate asymptotic convergence properties of the proposed genetic algorithm. It is proved that the proposed genetic algorithm would asymptotically converge. Numerical results based on the classical functions are obtained to show the potential of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:The tournament operator genetic algorithm (TGA) often shows poor convergence and easily gets trapped in a local optimum when solving optimized reservoir scheduling problems. The selection operation is the most important operation determining an algorithm’s convergence; therefore, this study proposes a proportional reproduction selection-based operator genetic algorithm (RGA) and a steady-state reproduction selection-based operator genetic algorithm (SGA) as alternatives to TGA. This study used TGA, RGA, and SGA to solve the maximum power generation model for the Gezhouba hydropower station, the largest runoff hydropower station in the world. Then, by using the maximum hydropower station output under a given typical runoff scenario as the optimization criterion, this study evaluated the optimized solution performance of the GA using different selection operators. The results show that TGA, SGA, and RGA can be applied to solve the short-term reservoir scheduling model. As the number of iterations increases, the hydropower station output optimized by these three GAs increases. Based on the maximum power generated by the Gezhouba hydropower station, SGA and RGA provide better results than TGA, and between SGA and RGA, the former provides better results.

Abstract:The Genetic Algorithm was improved, of which could solve the optimization problem for Unit Commitment (UC). In this paper, utilizing real number encoding and to deal with the Genetic Algorithm (GA) defects of easily get into local extreme value, and combines Alopex algorithm with GA, using the method of direct comparison to solve the problem of complex constraint conditions for UC. Calculation results showed that the algorithm converges well and has strong adaptability, and it has practical value to realize optimal UC.
