Abstract:The equilibrium geometries and relative stabilities of the 32 possible isomers of C84O have been studied using density functional theory (DFT) at the B3LYP/6-31G level. At the ground state, the most stable geometry of C84O has been found to be 12,13-C84O. In 12,13-C84O, the oxygen atom is added to the 6/6 bond, and an annulene-like structure is formed. Based on the optimized geometries at the B3LYP/6-31G level, the electronic absorption spectra and 13C NMR spectra of the stable isomers of C84O have been calculated with the INDO/CIS and B3LYP/6-31G methods, respectively. Compared with those of C84(D2), the main absorptions in the electronic spectrum of 12,13-C84O are red-shifted, and the chemical shifts of the bridged carbon atoms are changed upfield. The aromaticities of the 32 isomers of C84O characterized by the nucleus independent chemical shifts (NICS) have been investigated at the B3LYP/3-21G level. The aromaticities of the isomers with the annulene-like structures of C84O are better than those of the isomers with the epoxy structures. The dependence of the NICS values in 12,13-C84O on the distance of the helium atom from the cage center has also been explored.

Abstract:The Jahn-Teller distortion Of C-80(n)(D-5d, C-2v) singlet was studied by ZINDO method. C-80(D-5d) is more stable than C-80(C-2v), which agrees with the experimental results. Jahn-Teller distortion happens in some ions for the C-80(n)(D-5d) singlet. Total energy of C-80(n) singlet is affected by the increase of electric charges. Electronic spectra of C-80(n) singlet were calculated and the reasons for the red-shift of UV bands for some ions Of C-80(n)(D-5d) singlet compared with that of C-80(D-5d) and the blue-shift of UV bands for C-80(n)(C-2v) singlet relative to that of C-80(C-2v) were discussed.

Abstract:The semi-empirical AM1 and INDO/CIS methods as well as density function theory were used to study equilibrium geometries and spectroscopic properties of the possible isomers of C78O5 based on C2v-C78. The most stable geometry of C78O5 is 28,29,30,31,52,53,70,71,73,78-C78O5(A) with one annulene-like structure and four epoxide structures. Compared with that of C2v-C78, the blue-shift in the electronic absorption spectra of C78O5 isomers is predicted. The reason for the blue-shift effect is discussed and the electronic transitions are assigned. The IR and NMR spectra of C78O5 are explored with the AM1 and B3LYP/6-31G methods based on the B3LYP/6-31G optimized geometries.

Abstract:The Geometry optimization on radical anion C60 3- has been performed by INDO series methods and the D2h symmetry structure has been obtained. It is illustrated that the Jahn-Teller distortion has happened for C60 3- indeed, which induced that the single bonds become shorter whereas the double bonds become longer, furthermore the extra negative charges distribute in the vicinity of the equator. The electronic spectrum of C60 3- has been calculated based on the optimized geometry and is in agreement with the experimental results. The spectrum has been assigned theoretically and the nature of red shift has been discussed.

Abstract:Intermediate neglect of differential overlap (INDO) calculations were used to study the structure of C75B--the isoelectronic molecule of C-76. It was found that the boron atom mainly substitutes the second carbon atom (there are 19 types of carbon atoms in C-76). The electronic spectra of all the possible isomers of C75B- were calculated based on the optimized geometries. It was shown that the UV-Vis spectra of C75B- and C-76 resemble each other in many ways with the exception of the absorptions beyond 700 run. The red shift of the absorptions was rationalized and nature of transition of the peaks discussed. (C) 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:C-78(n) were studied systematically by the INDO (Intermediate neglect differential overlap) method. It was indicated that C-2v, isomer of C-78 s more stable than (C2v)'. In C-78(n) (C-2v , C-2v'), Jahn-Teller distortion did not happen. Total energy of C-78(n) is raised by the increasing in absolute values of electric charge numbers. Based on the optimized geometries, the electronic spectra of C-78(n) were calculated for the first time, electronic transition was assigned theoretically, and the reason of the red-shift of UV bands for C-78(n) compared with that Of C-78 was discussed.

Abstract:The equilibrium geometries of the twenty possible isomers of C82O2 have been studied using density function theory. The most stable isomer of C82O2 has been found to be 32,56,31,53-C82O2, where the annulene-like structures are formed. The energy gaps of the C82O2 isomers are basically wider than that of C-82 (C-3v) due to the high stability of C82O2. The chemical shifts of the bridged carbon atoms in C82O2 have been changed upfield in contrast to those of the corresponding carbon atoms in C-82 (C-3v) since the electronic density around these carbon atoms increases due to the addition of the oxygen atoms. Most of the isomers with annulene-like structures of C82O2 are weakly aromatic, while those with epoxy structures are highly aromatic. The C82O2 isomers with wide energy gaps show high aromaticity.

Abstract:The structures and stabilities of all the 21 possible isomers for C77B- based on C-78 (C-2v) were studied by the INDO series of methods. The most two stable geometries are C77B- (10) and C77B- (7), where B(10) and B(7) are located at the apexes among two hexagons and a pentagon near the shortest axis of C-78 (C-2v), and the former is more stable than the latter by 0.1902 eV. Based on the optimized geometries, the electronic spectra of the C77B- isomers were investigated with the INDO/CIS method and the electronic transitions were assigned. The reason for the red-shift of the first absorption peaks for C77B- compared with that Of C-78 (C-2v) was discussed.

Abstract:Intermediate neglect of differential overlap(INDO) calculations were used to study two isomers of C64H6: one of C2v symmetry and the other of Cs symmetry. The symmetry of C64H6 was discussed and related to 13C NMR results. The calculated electronic spectrum for C64H6(C2v) is in good agreement with the experimental results.

Abstract:The predicted lower energy structures of neutral carbon cluster C-10 are presented by using the particle swarm optimization method in combination with quantum chemistry calculation. Our results describe a wonderful diversity of C-10 configuration with the DFT and MP2 methods. For linear and cyclic clusters, the energy of most stable monocyclic structure with D-5h symmetry is lower by 1.38 kcal/mol than the transition isomers with D-10h symmetry at CCSD(T)/cc-pVTZ level, which is consistent with the previous theoretical results by others. All linear structures of C-10 cluster have been certified as the metastable states at different calculation methods in this work. Simulated infrared spectra reveals that the extensive electron localization exists in the D-10h configuration leading to the decreasing of the number of vibration modes compared with D-5h, configuration. The nucleus independent chemical shift (NICS) calculations indicate that planar C-10 system is a stable aromatic compound and the position used to calculate the aromatic indices can be affected by the most shielding or deshielded location that we employed. The contribution of the delocalized electrons to the pi-aromaticity is identical in C1(a) and C1(b). By the adaptive natural density partitioning (AdNDP) and canonical molecular orbital (CMO) analysis, we know that the highly symmetric structures have more energy degenerate CMOs and 2 center-2 electron bond connection, and monocyclic C-10 cluster is a globally doubly (sigma- and pi-) aromatic compound. Topological analysis and natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis show that there isn't any electrostatic type of interactions in C-10 structures, and much of negative natural valence electron configuration comes from high angular momentum orbitals. According to the electron configurations, the natural hybrid orbital is mainly composed of sp hybrid in the systems. It is worth mentioning that the competition of complicated many body effects plays a significant role in stabilizing the distorted configuration of C-10 cluster. We expect our work can provide more information for further experimental studies. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The relative stabilities of the twenty-three possible isomers for C84O2 based on C-84(D-2d) were studied by using density functional theory (DFT) at B3LYP/6-31G(d) level. The most stable isomer of C84O2 was found to be 1,5,8,9-C84O2 which contains annulene-like structures. In this isomer, two oxygen atoms are added on the same hexagon, which is called a same-ring adduct. The energy gap of C84O2 is narrower than that of C-84(D-2d). The chemical shifts of the bridged carbon atoms in C84O2 are changed upfield compared with those of the same carbon atoms in C-84(D-2d). The same-ring adduct possesses the higher aromaticity than C-84(D-2d). The area within the range of 0.2 nm from the cage center of C-84(D-2d) or C84O2 is the most suitable area for calculating NICS values.

Abstract:The electronic structures and stabilities of the nine possible isomers of C80CH2 based on C 80(D-5d) were studied using density function theory (DFT) at B3LYP/6-31G level. Based on the optimized geometries, the electronic spectra, IR and C-13 NMR spectra of the isomers of C80CH2 were calculated using INDO/CIS, PM3 and B3LYP/6-31G methods, respectively. The most stable geometry of C80CH2 is predicted to be 27,28-C80CH2(A) with an annulene structure, where the additive bond is 6/6 bond near the equatorial belt of C-80(D-5d). Compared with those of C-80(D-5d), the first absorptions in the electronic spectra and main absorptions in the IR spectra of the stable C80CH2 isomers are red-shifted. The C-13 chemical shifts of the bridged carbon atoms in the cyclopropane structures in comparison with those in the annulene structures are changed upfield. The aromaticities are better maintained in the annulene structures than cyclopropane structures according to the NICS values of C80CH2 at B3LYP/6-31G level.

Abstract:Deep studies on C-60(n-) and C-70(n-) have been performed based on superconductivities of M-x C-60 (M = K, Cs, Rb). The development of research in the Jahn-Teller distortion and spectroscopy of fullerene ions C-60(n +/-), C-70(n +/-), C-76(n +/-), C-78(n +/-) , and C-80(n +/-), is reviewed. Relevant works of other groups worldwide about experimental determination, theoretical calculation, structural exploration and spectroscopic investigation are introduced. The regularity of Jahn-Teller distortion and electronic spectra of fullerene ions is further explored according to authors' theoretical research in this field.

Abstract:The relative stabilities of the twenty possible isomers for C82O3 based on C-82 (C-3v) have been studied using density function theory. The most stable geometry of C82O3 has been found to be 1,6,2,3,4,5-C82O3 with annulene-like structure, where the additive bonds are located on the same hexagon surrounded by other six hexagons. The annulene-like isomers with the low cyclic tension of C82O3 are more stable than the epoxy isomers. Generally, the energy gaps of the C82O3 isomers are wider than that of C-82 (C-3v). The chemical shifts of the bridged carbon atoms in C82O3 move upfield in contrast to those of the corresponding carbon atoms in C-82 (C-3v). Different from the anti-aromaticity of C-82 (C-3v), the epoxy isomers of C82O3 basically show the aromaticity.

Abstract:We investigate the vibrational stability and the electronic structure of the proposed icosahedral fullerene-like cage structure of B80 [Szwacki, Sadrzadeh, and Yakobson, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 98}, 166804 (2007)] by an all electron density functional theory using polarized Gaussian basis functions containing 41 basis functions per atom. The vibrational analysis of B$_{80}$ indicates that the icosahedral structure is vibrationally unstable with 7 imaginary frequencies. The equilibrium structure has $T_h$ symmetry and a {\em smaller} gap of 0.96 eV between the highest occupied and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy levels compared to the icosahedral structure. The static dipole polarizability of B$_{80}$ cage is 149 \AAA and the first ionization energy is 6.4 eV. The B$_{80}$ cage has rather large electron affinity of 3 eV making it useful candidate as electron acceptor if it is synthesized. The infra-red and Raman spectra of the highly symmetric structure are characterized by a few absorption peaks.
