Abstract:The phase equilibrium of the binary system carbon dioxide + propene oxide has been determined for carbon dioxide mole fractions from 0.1 to 0.7 and temperatures from (303.2 to 353.2) K. The experimental measurements of bubble points were carried out in an experimental device incorporating a moveable piston and a vision window. A good description of the phase behavior in a wide range of temperatures with the Peng-Robinson equation of state using the one-parameter conventional van der Waals mixing rule has been obtained, on the basis of measured data and literature data for the carbon dioxide + propene oxide system. The binary interaction parameter k(ij) has been optimized to match experimental data at each temperature separately and found to be temperature-dependent, especially at high temperatures.

Abstract:Vapor liquid equilibrium data for system of ethyl acetate-pyridine at the pressures of 101.33 kPa, 66.66 kPa and 40.00 kPa were determined with a circulating glass still. The experimental data at different pressures satisfied the requirement of Herington抯 thermodynamic consistency. Those data were also correlated by Wilson and NRTL activity coefficient models, equivalent results were obtained, the maximum deviations of calculated vapor composition and bubble temperature from those of experimental were 0.0075 and 0.29℃ respectively.

Abstract:The binary vapor–liquid equilibrium data of CO2 in diethylene glycol (monomethyl, monoethyl, monobutyl, dimethyl, diethyl, dibutyl) ether were determined from 288.15 to 318.15 K at pressure up to 6MPa based on the constant-volume method. It was found by contrast that the ether group in solvents can promote the CO2 absorption, but the hydroxyl group will inhibit the CO2 absorption. Furthermore, the solubilities of CO2 showed an upward trend with the increasing molecular lengths of absorbents. The experimental data were also correlated with a modified Patel–Teja equation of state (PT EOS) combined with the traditional van der Waals one-fluid mixing rules and the results showed a satisfactory agreement between the model and the experimental data.

Abstract:The Brillouin scattering spectroscopy studies have been conducted in a diamond anvil cell for a liquid mixtures composed of 95 mol % H(2)O and 5 mol % CO(2) under high temperatures and pressures. The sound velocity, refractive index, density, and adiabatic bulk modulus of the H(2)O+CO(2) mixtures were determined under pressures up to the freezing point at 293, 453, and 575 K. It is found from the experiment that sound velocities of the liquid mixture are substantially lower than those of pure water at 575 K, but not at lower temperatures. We presented an empirical relation of the density in terms of pressure and temperature. Our results show that liquid H(2)O+CO(2) mixtures are more compressible than water obtained from an existing equation of state of at 453 and 575 K.

Abstract:A new method was proposed to measure the saturated vapor curve of the mixture by using a constant-volume vessel with a window. The mixture was fed into the vessel for one time, the composition of the mixture was kept constant and the concentration of the mixture was decreased by connecting the vessel to a pre-vacuumed small tube, which had the same temperature and pressure with the vessel. A series of bubble points, dew points and critical points of the definite-composition mixture can be obtained. The proposed measurement method was applied to a CO2/VC binary system at 22-97°C and with the mole fraction of CO2 being 0.377-0.964. The Peng-Robinson state equation was used to fit experimental critical pressures. The obtained binary interaction parameter was 0.029 and the average absolute deviation of critical pressure was 1.4%.

Abstract:CO 2 -based binary mixtures have good performance and environmental friendliness, which are considered a good choice for working fluid in cooling and power cycles. Analyzing the properties of the vapor-liquid equilibrium is used to calculate the enthalpy and entropy of the dew and bubble point, which are fundamental parameters of thermodynamics. In this study, we measure the vapor-liquid equilibrium experimental data of CO 2 -propylene mixture by static thermostatic analysis experimental system. The working fluids in this state are repeatedly collected from the equilibrium cell to the gas chromatograph by the two electromagnetic capillary samplers to analyze the molar fractions. The maximum pressure deviation and maximum relative pressure deviation of the saturation vapor pressure of propylene are -0.004 MPa and -0.38%, respectively. We measure 5 sets of isotherms from 283.73 to 323.72 K, two of which are supercritical temperatures (313.73 K and 323.72 K). The pressure is up to about 6.4 MPa. The standard experimental uncertainties of mole fractions, pressure, and temperature are within 0.004, 0.002 MPa, and 0.06 K, respectively. The association model (the Peng-Robinso equation incorporating the Wong-Sandler mixing rule and the Non-Random Two-Liquid model) is used to fit the obtained vapor-liquid equilibrium data. The value of the average absolute relative deviation of pressure (AARD p ) and the average absolute deviation of vapor phase molar fractions of component 1 (AAD y 1 ) is 0.29 % and 0.0062, respectively. The relative volatility under the five isotherms is also calculated, and most of the experimental data were within ± 5 % deviation.

Abstract:Properties of fluids under high pressure is of interest for processes design. A literature survey was conducted on experimental vapor-liquid equilibrium (VLE) and density for CO2+water and CO2+ethanol. Phase equilibrium and density of pure water, ethanol and CO2 were evaluated considering 1868 data points. VLE and saturated liquid density data were collected: 544 data points for CO2+water and 859 data points for CO2+ethanol. Soave Redlich-Kwong (SRK) equation of state (EoS) with Cubic Plus Association (CPA) was applied for calculation of these properties. Peng-Robinson EoS was evaluated to demonstrate CPA improvement in properties description. The binary interaction parameters were estimated from VLE. For pure compounds, the results indicated suitable description for both phase behavior and density. For CO2+water, density calculations were accurate (Δρ = 0.5%) and VLE was adequately described (Δx H2O = 0.49% and Δy CO2 = 4.63%). CO2+ethanol volumetric behavior and VLE were also satisfactorily described in CO2 concentrations up to 30% (Δρ = 2.92%, Δx EtOH = 1.37% and Δy CO2 = 5.86%, respectively).
Modelling VLE of Supercritical CO_2 + Alkanol Mixtures Using RG-CPA EOS

Abstract:Considering the contribution of association and the density fluctuations,an equation of state(EOS)based on the original cubic-plus-association(CPA)EOS and the renormalization group theory(RG)was extended to binary mixtures.The binary interaction parameters were obtained by fitting the vapor-liquid equilibrium(VLE)data at one temperature,and then were used to predict the VLE data at other temperatures.The RG-CPA EOS was used to predict the VLE and the critical line of the supercritical CO2-1-alkanol(n=1—8)binary mixtures,which are nonideal systems with association.Using temperature independent binary interaction parameters,satisfactory results for composition and density of both vapor and liquid phases were obtained by the RG-CPA EOS.The overall average absolute derivations of composition in liquid and vapor were 0.032 and 0.019 respectively.In addition,the RG-CPA EOS can successfully reproduce the vapor liquid critical line of these binary mixtures,which is much better than the original CPA EOS.

Abstract:Accurate prediction of both volumetric and vapor–liquid phase equilibria of binary CO2–H2O and CH4–H2O mixtures with a single equation of state proves to be difficult. In this study we use an activity–fugacity model to predict the vapor–liquid phase equilibria above 523K and adapt a Helmoholtz model to calculate volumetric properties of these two binary systems. The average deviations of water content in the vapor phase from experimental data are 3.25% and 3.19% for the CO2–H2O and CH4–H2O mixtures, respectively, and the average deviations of gas solubility in liquid phase from experimental data are 4.29% and 3.50%, respectively. The model can find wide applications, and an example is given for the analysis of fluid inclusions in geochemistry.

Abstract:The verification experiments of vapor-liquid equilibrium (VLE) for the CO2 + R-1234yf mixture were carried out along three isotherms from (283.15 to 313.15) K by a recirculation-analytical apparatus. The experimental data were in good agreement with the literature, which proved the reliability of the measurement apparatus and method for the binary system containing CO2. The VLE experiments for the CO2 + R-1243zf mixture were carried out along six isotherms from (273.15 to 313.15) K. The standard measurement uncertainty of temperature, pressure and mole fraction were 5 mK, 2.2 kPa and 0.0035, respectively. The Stryjek-Vera version of the PengRobinson (PRSV) equation of state combined with the Wong-Sandler (WS) mixing rule and the non-random twoliquid (NRTL) activity coefficient model (PRSV + WS + NRTL) was used to correlate the VLE data. For the CO2 + R-1234yf mixture, the average relative deviation of pressure (ARD(p)) and the average absolute deviation of compositions (AAD(y)) was 0.41% and 0.0028, respectively. For the CO2 + R-1243zf mixture, the ARD(p) and AAD(y) were 0.29% and 0.0021 for the data of this work; the literature data of CO2 + R-1243zf mixture show a systematic positive deviation from the data of this work and the established PRSV + WS + NRTL model.

Abstract:The pressure p−temperature T projections of solid−liquid−gas (S−L−G) three-phase coexistence lines for the carbon dioxide + octadecanoic acid (stearic acid; C18H36O2) system and the carbon dioxide + 1-octadecanol (stearyl alcohol; C18H38O) system were measured by the first melting point method in which the initial appearance of the liquid phase was observed. The experimental p−T projections of the S−L−G lines were also correlated by the Peng−Robinson equation of state and the van der Waals type mixing rules with two binary interaction parameters introduced into attraction term and size terms, respectively. The present model gave good correlation results for all of the experimental S−L−G lines with maximum average absolute relative deviations of 0.32 % for the carbon dioxide + octadecanoic acid system and 0.32 % for the carbon dioxide + 1-octadecanol system.

Abstract:The aim of this work is to report the (p, p, T) densities for the CO2 + H2O system from 274.15 K to 413.15 K and for pressures up to 18 MPa. The binary mixtures were initially synthesized at compositions with a CO2 mole fraction of x(1) = (0, 0.0042, 0.0084, and 0.0124). The experimental densities were measured using a magnetic suspension balance with a high-pressure measurement cell. The densities of the CO2 + H2O solutions increased linearly with increasing pressure and decreased with increasing temperature. The partial molar volumes calculated from the experimental densities had a good agreement with the model proposed by Sedlbauer et al. The perturbed chain-statistical associating fluid theory (PC-SAFT) and the truncated PC-polar SAFT (tPC-PSAFT) equations of state were used to calculate the densities of the CO2 + H2O systems in four different cases. Different models of the CO2 and the H2O components were presented in this work. In PC-SAFT, CO2 was modeled as a nonassociation molecule, and H2O was modeled as a molecule with four associating sites. For tPC-PSAFT, CO2 was considered as a nonassociation molecule with a quadrupole moment, and H2O was a molecule with four association sites and a dipole moment. In both PC-SAFT and tPC-PSAFT, correlations were established for the association parameters of pure water and the binary interaction parameter k(12), which markedly improved the accuracy of the prediction. The improved PC-SAFT, combined with the correlated association parameters of the pure water and k(12), gave the best prediction for the experimental densities in this work and in previous studies. The density differences between the pure water and the CO2 + H2O solutions were also predicted well by the improved PC-SAFT.

Abstract:A single-cycle apparatus was used to measure vapor–liquid equilibrium (VLE) data for the binary system (CH4 + C2H6) over low temperatures of (126.01 to 140.01) K and pressures up to 0.64 MPa. The Peng–Robinson (PR) + modified Huron–Vidal mixing rule (MHV1) + Wilson model was used to correlate the experimental data for the binary system (CH4 + C2H6), and the interactive parameters of the Wilson model were given. The model gave satisfactory results over the range of experimental temperatures and pressure.

Abstract:A new excess free energy mixing rule that employs a low-pressure reference state is proposed in this work. This new low-pressure mixing rule (LPMR), coupled with the original UNIFAC method and the Soave-Redlich-Kwong (SRK) equation of state (EoS), leads to an improved EoS/G(E) predictive model (LPMR-SRK model) that was applied to the high-pressure vapor-liquid phase equilibria of various systems including symmetric and asymmetric systems of n-alkanes with different gases (C2H6, C3H8, CO2, H-2) and polar systems. The results are compared with those of other EoS/G(E) predictive models, Such as the predictive Soave-Redlich-Kwong (PSRK), Chen-modified PSRK (MPSRK), volume-translated Peng-Robinson group contribution equation of state (VTPR), and linear combination of the Vidal and Michelsen rules (LCVM) models. It is demonstrated that LPMR-SRK method gives similar accuracy as the PSRK approach for symmetric or slightly asymmetric systems and gives better results than the MPSRK, VTPR, and LCVM models. For highly asymmetric nonpolar systems, the results indicate that the LPMR-SRK method has an accuracy similar to or slightly better than that of the MPSRK and VTPR models and gives a much better performance than the PSRK model. Furthermore, the LPMR-SRK approach is competitive with or better than the LCVM approach, except for sonic CO2/heavy alkane systems. In addition, although it is slightly inferior to the PSRK and LCVM approaches, the LPMR-SRK method can still provide satisfactory descriptions of polar systems that are more accurate than those of the MPSRK and VTPR models. Moreover, three ternary and one quaternary systems can also be predicted successfully by the LPMR-SRK method.
Toward accurate density and interfacial tension modeling for carbon dioxide/water mixtures

Abstract:Abstract Phase behavior of carbon dioxide/water binary mixtures plays an important role in various CO 2 -based industry processes. This work aims to screen a thermodynamic model out of a number of promising candidate models to capture the vapor–liquid equilibria, liquid–liquid equilibria, and phase densities of CO 2 /H 2 O mixtures. A comprehensive analysis reveals that Peng–Robinson equation of state (PR EOS) (Peng and Robinson 1976), Twu α function (Twu et al. 1991), Huron–Vidal mixing rule (Huron and Vidal 1979), and Abudour et al. (2013) volume translation model (Abudour et al. 2013) is the best model among the ones examined; it yields average absolute percentage errors of 5.49% and 2.90% in reproducing the experimental phase composition data and density data collected in the literature. After achieving the reliable modeling of phase compositions and densities, a new IFT correlation based on the aforementioned PR EOS model is proposed through a nonlinear regression of the measured IFT data collected from the literature over 278.15–477.59 K and 1.00–1200.96 bar. Although the newly proposed IFT correlation only slightly improves the prediction accuracy yielded by the refitted Chen and Yang (2019)’s correlation (Chen and Yang 2019), the proposed correlation avoids the inconsistent predictions present in Chen and Yang (2019)’s correlation and yields smooth IFT predictions.

Abstract:Direct interfacial molecular dynamics simulations are used to obtain the phase behavior and interfacial tension of CO2-H2O-NaCl mixtures over a broad temperature and pressure range (50 degrees CT250 degrees C, 0P600 bar) and NaCl concentrations (1-4 mol/kg H2O). The predictive ability of several existing water (SPC and TIP4P2005), carbon dioxide (EPM2 and TraPPE), and sodium chloride (SD and DRVH) models is studied and compared, using conventional Lorentz-Berthelot combining rules for the unlike-pair parameters. Under conditions of moderate NaCl molality (approximate to 1 mol/kg H2O), the predictions of the CO2 solubility in the water-rich and CO2-rich phase resemble those in the CO2-H2O system [Liu et al., J Phys Chem B. 2011;115:6629-6635]. Consistent with our previous work, the TraPPE/TIP4P2005 model combination gives the best overall performance in predicting coexistence composition and pressure in the water-rich phase. Critical assessments are also made on the ranges of temperature and pressure where particular model combinations work better. The dependence of the interfacial tension on temperature and pressure is better predicted by the TraPPE/TIP4P2005 and EPM2/SPC models, whereas the EPM2/TIP4P2005 model overestimates this property by 10-20%, possibly due to the inadequacy of the combining rules. It is also found that the interfacial tension increases with salt concentration, consistent with experimental observations. Abstract:In-situ quantitative Raman spectroscopy combining with high pressure optical capillary cell was used to measure water solubility in CO2 at pressures from 10 to 50 MPa and temperatures from 313.15 to 473.15 K. To accurately calibrate Raman system for measuring the concentrations of dissolved water in supercritical CO2 at high pressure and elevated temperature, the unsaturated homogenized solution method that we used for measuring the CO2 concentration in aqueous solution previously was modified to obtain the quantitative relationship between composition (the mole fraction of H2O in the homogeneous phase, xH2O) and Raman peak area ratio (PAR). The Raman quantitative factor PAR/xH2O increases linearly with increasing temperature, deceases with increasing pressure, and is not affected by the mole fraction of H2O in the mixture. 45 solubility data points were obtained, and they are generally consistent with previous experimental studies. However, predictions of the thermodynamic models substantially deviate from the new measurements due to the previous lack of accurate experimental data in these P-T ranges. Parameters of the model were then refined, and the solubility data can now be accurately reproduced by the model.

Abstract:The carbon dioxide (CO2) solubility in aqueous 2-(diethylamino)-ethanol (DEEA) solutions were measured at (60 and 80 degrees C), with the DEEA concentrations of 3 M and 4 M and pressure range of (3 to 192 kPa). The absorption heat of CO2 with (1, 3, and 4 M) aqueous DEEA solutions at different temperatures is also presented in this work. A thermodynamic model based on the electrolyte non-random two-liquid (eNRTL) theory within Aspen Plus (R) has been developed to correlate and predict the vapor liquid equilibrium and heat of absorption of CO2 in aqueous DEEA solutions.
