Abstract:A case-control study, including 1328 new cases of large bowel cancer (LBC) and 1451 normal people as control, was carried out in Shanghai. This paper reported on the role of the common symptoms of LBC in identifying patients with LBC from general population and application of probability equation by nonconditional logistic regression. This study indicated that: 1) Positive rate of any two of three symptoms (chronic diarrhoea, frequent constipation, mucous and bloody stool) appeared by 15% in those with LBC and 3% in population controls. 2) When the critical probability set at 0.65, 30.3% of LBC patients can be detected, and the positive rate in population at large was 6.7%, when estimated by the probability equation. 3) A comprehensive method, combining RPHA-FOB test with mathematical mode, may identify 70%-80% patients with LBC, and the estimated condensation rate for high risk population was 8%-10%.
